Charge your Kobo eReader for at least one hour, turn it on, join Wi‑Fi, install any offered update, and sign in to or create a Kobo account. Once a book is open, tap the center of the page to reach the Reading Menu, where you can change the font, type size, line spacing, margins, and justification. Swipe along the left edge to adjust brightness when your model has a built-in light.
If Wi‑Fi is unavailable, Kobo also documents a computer setup route, but it is limited by model and region. The practical order is to complete account setup first, open a normal ebook, and then tune one reading control at a time so you can tell which change improves comfort.
What you need before starting
Have these items ready:
- The Kobo eReader and a compatible charging cable.
- A Wi‑Fi network name and password, with attention to uppercase and lowercase characters.
- A Kobo account, or an email address you can use to create one.
- About an hour of charging time before first use.
Wi‑Fi is Kobo’s general setup route. A computer-based route exists for some models and regions, but it is not a universal fallback. If you plan to use a computer, check the compatibility limits before changing your setup method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConnector types vary by device generation. Older computer instructions describe a Micro USB cable, but you should use the cable that matches your own eReader rather than assuming every Kobo uses the same connector. A cable that only supplies power may also be unsuitable for file transfer, so use a cable intended to connect the reader to a computer when the instructions call for USB data.

Set up the eReader over Wi‑Fi
1. Charge and start the device
Charge the eReader for at least one hour before beginning. Press the power button to turn it on. The first screens ask you to choose a language and then select a setup method. Keeping the reader on power during the initial process gives it time to finish setup and any software download without an avoidable low-battery interruption.
2. Choose Wi‑Fi setup
Select the option to set up over Wi‑Fi. The eReader displays nearby networks. Tap your network, enter its password when requested, and continue. Passwords are case-sensitive. If a password contains a zero or the letter O, verify that you entered the correct character. Also check that you did not add an accidental space at the beginning or end.
If your network is not shown, rescan from the network list. The reader needs to be within normal router range, and the network itself must be operating. A hidden network can be added manually when the on-screen option is available; you will need the network name and its security credentials.

3. Enter time information if requested
Depending on the device and setup state, Kobo may ask for the date, time, or time zone. Choose the values that match your location and proceed through the on-screen prompts. Accurate time information helps the device complete the setup sequence with the correct local settings.
4. Allow software updates to finish
After connecting, the eReader checks for available software. Kobo says this update process can take up to 20 minutes. Keep the device connected to Wi‑Fi and, if possible, connected to power until the update and restart sequence is complete. Interrupting the process can leave setup unfinished. A progress screen or restart during this stage is not a reason to disconnect immediately; allow the stated update process time to run.
5. Sign in or create a Kobo account
Enter the credentials for your Kobo account, or choose the option to create one. The account connects the eReader with your Kobo library. If the device was already associated with an account, books will appear as they are added and synchronized. Complete the sign-in prompts on the reader rather than assuming that joining Wi‑Fi alone has linked the device to your library.
6. Open a book to verify setup
Open any available book and turn a page. This confirms that the account, library synchronization, and touch controls are working. The same reading screen is where you will customize text and lighting. Use an ordinary text-heavy chapter for this check; a title page or heavily formatted page may not show the effect of every setting clearly.

Kobo documents a no-Wi‑Fi setup through the Kobo Desktop application, but its current compatibility guidance has important limits. Kobo Desktop is not compatible with Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo Clara Colour, or Kobo Clara BW, and Kobo says the desktop route does not work for customers in Europe.
| Question | What Kobo’s current guidance establishes |
|---|---|
| Does the route require Wi‑Fi? | No. It is intended for the reader’s “no Wi‑Fi” setup option. |
| Which named models are excluded? | Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo Clara Colour, and Kobo Clara BW. |
| Is it available in every region? | No. Kobo says it does not work for customers in Europe. |
| How does the reader connect? | By USB to a computer running Kobo Desktop. |
| What cable should you use? | A cable that matches your eReader’s connector. Older instructions describe Micro USB, but connector types vary by device generation. |
These restrictions matter before you spend time troubleshooting the application. A reader in Europe, or someone using one of the three excluded color models, cannot make this documented route work simply by reinstalling Desktop or trying a different USB cable. In that situation, arrange access to a compatible Wi‑Fi network and use the on-device setup flow.
Computer setup steps for a supported device and region
- Install and open Kobo Desktop on the computer.
- Sign in to your Kobo account in the application.
- On the eReader, choose the setup option for a device without Wi‑Fi.
- Connect the eReader to the computer with a compatible USB cable.
- Wait while the application configures the reader and synchronizes it. Do not unplug it during this stage.
- When synchronization is complete, use the computer’s eject command before disconnecting the cable.
The eject step is part of a clean handoff between the computer and reader. Disconnecting while configuration or synchronization is still running can interrupt the process, so wait for Desktop to finish and for the reader to indicate that it is ready. If the computer does not detect the device, first confirm that the cable matches the connector and supports a computer connection, then recheck the model and regional limits.
If your model or location is excluded, use Wi‑Fi setup instead. Trying a different cable or reinstalling Desktop will not remove a model or regional restriction.

Open the Reading Menu
Open a supported ebook and tap the middle of the page. The Reading Menu appears over the text. From there you can choose a font face, change type size, alter line spacing and margins, and select text justification. Kobo says these preferences are remembered and applied to other books.
The controls apply to supported ebook text. They do not reflow or restyle PDF text through this menu, so a PDF may continue to use the typography and page layout embedded in the document. If a control seems ineffective in a PDF, that behavior is a format limitation rather than proof that the reader’s settings failed.
Make changes with a representative passage visible. A heading, quotation, table, or other specially formatted element may retain its own styling, while ordinary paragraphs reveal the effect of size, spacing, margins, and alignment more reliably.
Customize font and page layout
Font face
Use the font selector in the Reading Menu to choose among the fonts available on the device. A different face can make letter shapes easier to distinguish or change how much text fits on a page. There is no Kobo-defined font that is best for everyone. If you later add a supplemental font, it appears in this same reading control when the file has been installed correctly.
Font size
Increase the size if letters are difficult to read or you find yourself holding the eReader unusually close. Decrease it if page turns feel too frequent and the text remains comfortable at the smaller setting. Judge the result on a normal paragraph rather than on a heading, since headings can use different styling.
Font size is independent of line spacing and margins. If the words are legible but the page feels crowded, try spacing or margins before making the type much larger. Conversely, if the page has plenty of white space but the letters remain difficult to distinguish, size is the more direct adjustment.
Line spacing
More space between lines can make it easier to keep your place, while tighter spacing shows more words on each screen. Change this independently from font size; increasing both at once can make it hard to tell which adjustment helped. Read several consecutive paragraphs after changing it, because a single short paragraph may not reveal whether your eyes can track from one line to the next.
Margins
Wider margins create more white space around the text. Narrower margins place more words on a page. If your eyes lose the beginning or end of a line, try a wider margin before making the type dramatically larger. If the text column feels unnecessarily narrow, reducing the margins can provide more usable line length without changing the letter size.
Justification
Choose the available alignment that looks most natural to you. Fully justified text creates even left and right edges but may produce uneven spaces between words. Left-aligned text keeps word spacing more consistent but leaves a ragged right edge. Compare several paragraphs rather than deciding from a single line, since the pattern of spaces changes with different word lengths.
A practical way to tune the settings
- Open a typical chapter, not a title page or a heavily formatted passage.
- Set the font face you are most likely to keep.
- Adjust font size until the letters are comfortable without leaning toward the screen.
- Change line spacing, then read several paragraphs to check whether your eyes can track lines easily.
- Adjust margins if lines feel too wide or too cramped.
- Choose the justification that produces the most comfortable word spacing.
- Read for a few minutes before making another change. Altering one control at a time makes the effect of each choice clear.
These are personal comfort settings, not universal recommendations. Kobo’s documentation identifies the available controls but does not establish a preferred size, spacing, margin, or alignment for every reader. The device remembers the preferences, so once you find a comfortable combination you should not need to repeat the process for every book.
Adjust brightness and the reading light
Quick brightness adjustment
While reading, swipe up or down along the left edge of the screen. Swiping changes the brightness. For a more precise value, open the brightness menu and use its control instead of repeated edge swipes. Make sure the gesture starts along the edge while a book is open; tapping the center opens the Reading Menu rather than changing brightness.

Know which light your model has
Most Kobo eReader screens have a built-in light called ComfortLight. The Kobo Touch, Kobo Touch 2.0, and Kobo mini do not have ComfortLight, so their screens cannot provide the same front-light adjustment.

- Kobo Clara 2E
- Kobo Sage
- Kobo Libra H2O
- Kobo Forma
- Kobo Clara HD
- Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2
- Kobo Aura ONE
Do not assume that an eReader has ComfortLight or ComfortLight PRO merely because it is a Kobo device. If the brightness gesture or color-temperature control is absent, consult the instructions for that specific model. The absence of a color-temperature option does not indicate that ordinary text settings are unavailable; font and page controls are accessed separately through the Reading Menu.
Add an optional custom font
Kobo supports font files in OpenType (.otf) and TrueType (.ttf) formats. This requires a computer and a USB cable that fits the eReader. Font installation is optional; the built-in choices remain available if you prefer not to manage files manually.
- Connect the eReader to the computer with USB.
- Tap Connect on the eReader when its USB prompt appears.
- Open the KOBOeReader drive on the computer.
- Open the folder named fonts. If it does not exist, create a folder with exactly that name.
- Copy the
.otfor.ttffile into the fonts folder. - Eject the eReader safely from the computer, then disconnect the cable.
- Open a supported ebook, tap the center of the page, and choose the added font from the Reading Menu.
Some fonts may not render properly. If the new face is missing, displays incorrectly, or makes text hard to read, remove that file from the fonts folder and select one of the built-in fonts. A font file’s presence on the drive does not guarantee that every ebook will display it correctly, especially when the book contains special formatting.
Troubleshoot Wi‑Fi and setup problems
| Symptom | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|
| Your network is not listed | Move the eReader closer to the router, confirm that the network is operating, and rescan the list. If it is hidden, use the option to add the network manually. |
| The password is rejected | Re-enter it with the exact capitalization. Check especially for a number zero versus the letter O and for accidental spaces. |
| The reader sees Wi‑Fi but cannot connect | Confirm that the network is available to other devices, verify that the password is current, and try again from within normal router range. |
| A 5 GHz network does not appear | Most Kobo eReaders connect only to 2.4 GHz networks. Kobo Elipsa units released in June 2021 or later support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. For other models, enable or select a 2.4 GHz network. |
| Setup stops during the update | Keep the reader powered and connected while the update runs; Kobo says the process can take up to 20 minutes. If it still cannot complete, restart setup and recheck the network before considering the computer route. |
| You want to use Kobo Desktop | First verify that your model is not Libra Colour, Clara Colour, or Clara BW and that you are not attempting the route from Europe. If either restriction applies, use Wi‑Fi setup. |
Network band support is a frequent source of confusion. Seeing a 5 GHz network on a phone does not mean every Kobo can see it. Most models use 2.4 GHz; only Kobo Elipsa released in June 2021 or later is identified by Kobo as supporting both bands. When in doubt, select the router’s 2.4 GHz network rather than repeatedly re-entering a correct password on an unsupported band.
If setup fails after a successful connection, separate the stages: first confirm that the reader stays connected, then allow the update to finish, and finally complete account sign-in. This makes it easier to identify whether the problem is network visibility, credentials, software updating, or account synchronization.
Choose the right setup and comfort approach
| Your situation | Best next step |
|---|---|
| You have a working compatible Wi‑Fi network | Use the on-device Wi‑Fi sequence. It is Kobo’s general setup path and handles account sign-in and updates directly. |
| You have no Wi‑Fi, but a supported model, computer, and supported region | Use Kobo Desktop’s no-Wi‑Fi setup and eject the reader only after configuration and synchronization finish. |
| You have no Wi‑Fi and an excluded model or European location | The documented computer route is unavailable; arrange access to a compatible Wi‑Fi network. |
| Text is hard to read | Start with font size, then tune line spacing and margins. Change one control at a time. |
| The screen is too bright or dim | Swipe along the left edge or use the brightness menu, provided the model has a built-in light. |
| You want a particular typeface | Load an .otf or .ttf file into the fonts folder and select it from the Reading Menu. |
The setup choice depends on three practical facts: whether a usable Wi‑Fi network is available, whether Kobo Desktop supports your model, and whether your location is eligible for the desktop route. Reading comfort is a separate decision. Once the account and library work, choose settings according to the result you want—larger type, more tracking space, wider or narrower margins, a different face, or less brightness—rather than copying a fixed configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a successful setup looks like
- The eReader starts in your chosen language and reaches the home screen without repeatedly returning to setup.
- Wi‑Fi remains connected long enough for software updates to complete.
- Your Kobo account is signed in and its books can be synchronized.
- A book opens, the center tap reveals the Reading Menu, and your text changes take effect.
- Brightness responds to the left-edge gesture only if your particular model includes ComfortLight.
- If you installed a custom font, it appears in the supplemental font list after the reader has been safely ejected.
At that point, there is no need to keep changing settings simply because another reader uses different values. Kobo provides the controls, but the comfortable combination depends on your eyesight, the typeface, and the book’s formatting. Save the settings that let you read normally, and revisit them only when a different book or lighting condition calls for a small adjustment.

How do I set up a Kobo eReader without Wi‑Fi?
Use Kobo Desktop only if your model and region are supported. Choose the reader’s no-Wi‑Fi option, sign in to Kobo Desktop, connect by a compatible USB cable, wait for configuration and synchronization, and safely eject the reader.
Can Kobo Desktop set up every Kobo model?
No. Kobo’s current guidance excludes Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo Clara Colour, and Kobo Clara BW, and says the desktop route does not work for customers in Europe.
Why cannot I see my Wi‑Fi network on the Kobo?
Move the reader within normal router range, confirm the network is available, and rescan. Hidden networks may be added manually. Most Kobo eReaders connect only to 2.4 GHz; Kobo Elipsa released in June 2021 or later supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
How do I change the font size and style?
Open a supported ebook, tap the center of the page to open the Reading Menu, then choose a font face and adjust type size. The same menu includes line spacing, margins, and justification.
Why did my font settings not change a PDF?
Kobo’s Reading Menu controls apply to supported ebook text. PDF typography and page layout may be embedded in the document, so those controls do not reflow or restyle PDF text in the same way.
How do I adjust Kobo screen brightness?
While reading, swipe up or down along the left edge for a quick change, or use the brightness menu for a more precise value. The gesture requires a model with a built-in light.
Recommended Free Tools
Does every Kobo have ComfortLight or ComfortLight PRO?
No. Kobo Touch, Kobo Touch 2.0, and Kobo mini do not have ComfortLight. ComfortLight PRO is model-specific and is listed by Kobo for Clara 2E, Sage, Libra H2O, Forma, Clara HD, Aura H2O Edition 2, and Aura ONE.
How do I install a custom font on a Kobo?
Connect the reader by USB, tap Connect, open the KOBOeReader drive, create a folder named fonts if necessary, and copy an .otf or .ttf file into it. Safely eject the reader, then select the font from the Reading Menu.
What if a custom font does not display correctly?
Some fonts may not render properly. Remove the file from the fonts folder after reconnecting the reader, safely eject it, and select a built-in font instead.
The Bottom Line
For most readers, the reliable sequence is simple: charge for an hour, complete Wi‑Fi setup and account sign-in, let updates run for up to 20 minutes, then open a normal ebook and use the Reading Menu to tune font, size, spacing, margins, and alignment. Adjust brightness from the left edge only when your model has ComfortLight. Use Kobo Desktop only after confirming model and regional support, and treat custom fonts as an optional USB step.
