To make your first LIT HERO recording, use this order: insert a compatible A2/V30-or-higher microSD card while the camera is off, charge the integrated battery, close and lock the door, install the required camera update, power on, press Shutter to record, and swipe up from the bottom of the screen to check the clip.
The card is sold separately, and GoPro says the camera must be updated before it can be used. The built-in light and alternate capture modes are optional; neither is required for a first video.
What you need before turning on the LIT HERO
Gather these items before starting:
- The LIT HERO camera.
- A brand-name microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card rated Class A2 and V30 or higher. The card is sold separately. The available documentation does not identify a required capacity or a preferred brand.
- The included USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB charger.
- A phone with internet access if you plan to update through the GoPro Quik app, or internet access to GoPro’s update page for a manual update.
A card that merely fits the slot is not enough. LIT HERO’s stated requirement combines the card family with two performance ratings: A2 and V30 or above. When shopping, look for those markings on the package rather than relying on a generic “microSD” description. Since no capacity is specified in the cited manual, choose a capacity that suits your own recording plans instead of assuming that a particular size is mandatory.
Recommended Free Tools
The camera has an integrated, non-removable battery. Plan to charge it before your first session rather than expecting to swap in a spare battery. A mount, light accessory, or protective case is not needed for the initial test; you only need to prove that the camera can capture and replay a clip.

Set up the camera step by step
1. Insert a compatible microSD card with the camera off
Turn the camera off before inserting or removing the card. Open the door latch and flip the door open. Slide the card into the slot with its label facing the front of the camera.
Do not remove the card while the camera is on. Keeping the camera off during this step follows the LIT HERO manual’s handling instruction and avoids interrupting a storage operation. If you are replacing a card later, stop recording, power the camera down completely, and only then open the door and remove it.
Check the card’s A2 and V30-or-higher markings before troubleshooting the camera. The documentation does not name a preferred manufacturer, and it does not establish a required capacity, so the important purchase criteria are the supported microSD-family format and the stated speed ratings.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute2. Charge the integrated battery
Connect the camera to a USB charger using the included USB-C to USB-C cable. The status light turns off when charging is complete. Because the battery is built in and cannot be removed, leave enough charging time for the first recording and for the update process.
When charging is finished, unplug the cable before closing the door. The charging indicator going dark is the manual’s completion signal; it is more useful than guessing from how long the camera has been connected. If you begin with a partly charged camera, the update, light, and recording can all draw from the same fixed battery, so a full charge is the least complicated starting point.
3. Close and lock the camera door
Close the door fully and engage the latch. Check that it is securely locked and sealed before operating the camera. A partially latched door is not a finished setup step.
Make the door check after unplugging the USB cable, not while the cable is still passing through the opening. If the latch does not engage, reopen the door, make sure nothing is caught at the seal, and close it again. Do not proceed to a recording or a mount until the latch is visibly closed and locked.
4. Install the required camera update
GoPro states that the LIT HERO must be updated before it can be used. The manual’s wording is direct: “You must update your camera before you can use it.” Treat this as part of setup, not as an optional later improvement.
You have two documented update routes:
- GoPro Quik app: connect the camera to the app on a phone with internet access and follow the update prompts.
- Manual update: open GoPro’s update page, choose LIT HERO, and follow the manual-update instructions shown there.
Use the route that is practical for your equipment, but follow the on-screen or page instructions exactly. Do not remove the microSD card during an update. The manual warns that doing so may permanently damage the camera. Keep the camera connected as instructed by the update process until it finishes, and do not treat a temporary pause as permission to pull the card.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
After the update completes, return to the normal startup sequence. The update does not replace the need for a compatible card, a charged battery, or a locked door.
5. Power on
Press Power/Mode once to turn the camera on. Holding Power/Mode for three seconds powers it off. A short press and a three-second hold have different jobs, so use the short press when beginning the first setup.

Choose a capture mode for the first clip
The camera lists four capture modes. For a conventional first recording, start with Video (16:9); it is the simplest choice for footage intended to fill a phone or television screen. You can change modes after confirming that the basic record-and-playback sequence works.
| Mode | What the manual describes | Good first-use decision |
|---|---|---|
| Video (16:9) | Widescreen video intended for full-screen playback on a phone or TV | Use this when you want a familiar, standard-looking frame |
| 4:3 Video | A taller frame suited to point-of-view footage | Choose it when showing more vertical space around an action-camera viewpoint matters |
| Photo | Still-image capture | Use only if your first test is a photo rather than a video |
| Slo-Mo (16:9) | Slow-motion video; the manual lists 60/50 frames-per-second options and playback at normal speed or 2x slow motion | Choose it for motion you specifically want to examine more slowly |
Think of the mode decision as a framing and motion choice, not a prerequisite to operating the camera. The 16:9 option uses the conventional shape most viewers expect on a phone or TV. The 4:3 option is taller, which can preserve more of the area above and below a point-of-view subject. Slo-Mo is for a deliberate slow-motion result; it is not necessary for checking whether the camera records.
Frame-rate choices depend on the camera’s regional format: 60 Hz regions use NTSC options, while 50 Hz regions use PAL options. If the camera presents 60 and 50 versions of a setting, select the format appropriate to your region and lighting environment. The manual’s listed Slo-Mo choices are 60/50 frames per second, and playback can be at regular speed or 2x slow motion.
Make your first recording
Recording with the camera already on
- Wake the camera with Power/Mode.
- Confirm that a video mode is selected, preferably Video (16:9) for a first test.
- Compose a simple scene in front of the lens and press Shutter once to start recording.
- Press Shutter a second time to stop recording.
The important control pattern is one Shutter press to start and another to stop. Keep the camera still for a moment after pressing stop so the recording can finish saving before you move on to playback. A short test clip is enough; the goal is to verify the complete path from capture to saved file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStarting immediately with QuikCapture
If the camera is off, press Shutter to start a QuikCapture video. This shortcut powers the camera into video recording without requiring a separate power-on step. Press Shutter again to stop recording; the camera then turns off.
QuikCapture is useful when the moment matters more than browsing settings. It is also a quick way to repeat a test once the camera is configured. It is not a replacement for the initial card, charge, door, and update steps: those conditions still need to be completed first.
Confirm that the clip was captured
- After stopping, wait briefly for the file to finish saving.
- Swipe up from the bottom edge of the touch screen.
- Open the last video or photo shown in the camera’s media view.
- Play the clip and check that the expected scene and sound were recorded.
This check answers the practical question “How do I know my first LIT HERO video worked?” You should be able to find the newest item in the camera’s media view and play it back. If it is not immediately visible, give the camera a moment to finish saving before swiping up again.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
You can also use the Quik app for playback and editing. GoPro says HyperSmooth stabilization is applied in the Quik app; playback on the camera’s own screen does not show that stabilization. Therefore, an unstabilized-looking preview on the camera does not by itself indicate that the recording failed. Use the camera screen to confirm that the file exists, and use Quik when you need the app’s playback, editing, or stabilization processing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Decide whether to use the built-in light
The integrated light is optional. Successive presses of the Light Control button cycle through low, medium, high, and off. The light can be used while the camera is off.
Use it as fill or scene illumination when the subject needs additional light. It shares the camera’s battery, so using it reduces available recording time. For a first setup test in adequate light, leave it off and add it only when the scene requires it. If the camera seems to lose charge faster than expected, check whether the light is still set to low, medium, or high and press Light Control until it is off.
Mounting and accessories: what is optional
You do not need a mount to make the first recording. The LIT HERO supports folding fingers and 1/4-20 mounting threads, giving you options for attaching it to compatible supports later. Decide on a support after you know whether you will hold the camera, attach it to a vehicle, or use a point-of-view position.
The magnetic latch connection point is intended for a Magnetic Latch Mount, which is sold separately. GoPro’s Starter Bundle page lists combinations that can include a Shorty, Bite Mount plus Extension Piece, Magnetic Swivel Clip, Floaty, and Camera Case. Bundle contents vary, so choose an accessory only after deciding how you will use the camera. None of these accessories is required to verify that the camera records, and availability can change.
Current firmware information
GoPro’s US update page lists LIT HERO v2.10.00, dated April 14, 2026. Because that is a dated page snapshot, check the update page when you set up the camera for the version currently offered rather than assuming v2.10.00 is still the newest release.
That listed release includes these changes:
- Renamed Sport POV to SuperView.
- Added 1080p 120/100 16:9 Slo-Mo.
- Added 1440p 30/25 4:3 Video Battery Saver.
- Added 1080p 60/50 SuperView Battery Saver.
- Enabled lower-power preview in selected modes.
- Added Open GoPro support.
- Included bug fixes and general improvements.
These additions do not change the basic first-recording sequence: storage, charge, door, update, power, record, and playback. They may change the options shown after updating, so do not be surprised if a menu label such as Sport POV now appears as SuperView.
Troubleshoot the first setup
| Symptom | What to check | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The camera will not save a video | Storage card is missing, incompatible, or inserted incorrectly | Power the camera off, then install a brand-name microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card rated A2 and V30 or higher, with the label facing the front |
| The update cannot continue | The camera lacks the required update route or the card was removed | Use Quik on an internet-connected phone or the manual update path; do not remove the card during the update |
| The camera is difficult to start | The Power/Mode button was held instead of pressed, or the battery is not charged | Press Power/Mode once to power on; hold it for three seconds only when you intend to power off, and charge through USB-C if needed |
| The door does not seem secure | The latch is not fully engaged | Unplug the cable, close the door completely, and verify that the latch is closed and locked before recording |
| The clip is not visible immediately | The camera may still be saving, or the media view has not been opened | Wait briefly after stopping, then swipe up from the bottom of the touch screen to view the last recording |
| Camera playback looks less smooth than expected | HyperSmooth processing is not displayed on the camera screen | Open the clip in the Quik app, where GoPro applies HyperSmooth stabilization |
| The battery runs down faster than expected | The integrated light is enabled | Press Light Control until the light is off when illumination is not needed |
| The camera shows unexpected mode names | The current firmware changed a label | Check the update page and remember that v2.10.00 renamed Sport POV to SuperView |
| You are unsure which aspect ratio to use | The intended viewing or camera position is unclear | Use 16:9 for conventional phone or TV playback; choose taller 4:3 framing for point-of-view coverage |

Can I insert or remove the card while recording?
No. Power the camera off before inserting or removing the card. Removing it during an update may permanently damage the camera.
Is the battery replaceable?
No. The LIT HERO uses an integrated battery. Charge it through USB-C with the included USB-C to USB-C cable.
Do I have to update before my first video?
Yes. GoPro’s manual says, “You must update your camera before you can use it.” Use Quik with an internet-connected phone or the manual update instructions on GoPro’s update page.
What button starts recording?
With the camera on, press Shutter once to start and again to stop. With the camera off, pressing Shutter launches QuikCapture video; pressing it again stops and turns the camera off.
Which mode is best for a first test?
Video (16:9) is the straightforward default for conventional phone or TV playback. Use 4:3 when a taller point-of-view frame is more useful, or Slo-Mo when you specifically want slow motion.
Why does my camera preview not look stabilized?
GoPro says HyperSmooth stabilization is applied in the Quik app. The camera’s own playback does not show that stabilization, so an unstabilized camera preview does not necessarily mean the file is faulty.
Does the built-in light have to be on?
No. It is optional. Press Light Control to cycle low, medium, high, and off. Because it uses the integrated battery, leave it off when the scene already has enough light.
Do I need a mount or case to record?
No. Mounts and cases are optional. The camera supports folding fingers and 1/4-20 threads, while the magnetic latch connection point works with a separately sold Magnetic Latch Mount.
What firmware version should I install?
Check GoPro’s update page for the current release. The US page lists LIT HERO v2.10.00 dated April 14, 2026, but that listing can change.

What to remember for your first session
The LIT HERO’s first-use setup is mostly about preventing avoidable interruptions: use the correct card, handle it only while the camera is off, charge the fixed battery, secure the door, and complete the required update before recording. Once those conditions are met, recording is a two-press operation with Shutter, and the camera’s swipe-up media view provides an immediate confirmation that the clip exists.
For the least complicated first attempt, leave the light off, select Video (16:9), make a short clip, stop with Shutter, and replay it on the camera. Then use Quik if you want app playback, editing, or HyperSmooth stabilization. After that baseline test succeeds, experiment with 4:3 framing, Slo-Mo, the light, and optional mounts for the activity you actually plan to film.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the camera before updating it?
No. GoPro’s manual states that you must update the camera before you can use it. Update through Quik or GoPro’s manual update page.
Why is HyperSmooth missing from camera playback?
GoPro applies HyperSmooth stabilization in the Quik app. Playback on the camera screen does not display that stabilization.
Is the LIT HERO light required for recording?
No. The light is optional and cycles through low, medium, high, and off. It uses the camera battery and can reduce recording time.
The Bottom Line
For a reliable first LIT HERO clip, install an A2/V30-or-higher microSD card while the camera is off, charge the integrated battery, lock the door, complete GoPro’s required update, and choose Video (16:9). Press Shutter to record and stop, then swipe up to replay the file. QuikCapture, the light, 4:3, Slo-Mo, and mounts are useful options after that basic sequence works.
