To make a gaming headset work, solve four things in order: connect it correctly, select it as both the playback and microphone device, enable voice chat in the game, and then adjust the game/chat mix. A mute switch, incorrectly positioned boom, or an app using a different audio endpoint can make a perfectly good headset appear broken. Start with settings and routing before buying replacement hardware.
What a gaming headset must do
A headset has two separate jobs. Its speakers (the output) play game sound and voice chat; its microphone (the input) sends your voice to teammates. Consoles and computers may expose those jobs as separate devices, and some headsets expose additional channels named Game and Chat.
For example, the Arctis Pro setup instructions tell Windows users to select “Arctis Pro Game Audio” for playback and “Arctis Pro Chat” for recording. Those names are specific to that product. Another headset may show one combined device, a USB headset name, a wireless receiver name, or several virtual endpoints.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep these distinctions in mind:
- Playback/output: where game and chat audio are sent.
- Recording/input: the microphone that teammates hear.
- Game endpoint: a playback channel intended for game audio on headsets that split channels.
- Chat endpoint: a playback or recording channel intended for voice applications on headsets that split channels.
- Game/chat balance: a relative mix control; it is different from simply turning the entire headset louder.
Not every headset has separate Game and Chat endpoints, and a balance wheel or button only works when the headset and software route those channels as intended.

Check the headset and connection before changing software
- Use the connection method supported by the exact headset and platform. A manufacturer’s example may use USB for a PC or PlayStation setup and a 3.5 mm cable for Xbox, Switch, or mobile, but that is not a universal rule.
- Push a wired plug fully into the correct port. For wireless models, power the headset and its receiver, then complete the model’s pairing procedure.
- Move the boom microphone close to your mouth, with its marked or perforated side facing you when the model requires a particular orientation.
- Check the headset’s physical mute switch, mute button, and volume or balance controls. A red indicator or raised mute switch can override every software setting.
- Disconnect other microphones and speakers temporarily if you are unsure which device an application is using. This makes the correct input and output easier to identify.
Do not raise microphone gain to compensate for a hardware mute state or a boom that is folded into its storage position. First establish that the headset is powered, connected, and physically unmuted.
Understand the routing you are configuring
There are usually three routing layers:
| Layer | What to select | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system or console | Headset output and microphone input | Determines the default devices used by games and chat. |
| Chat application or party system | Chat output and chat input, when separate choices exist | Prevents party audio from going to speakers or a different microphone. |
| Game | Voice-chat enablement and, on some titles, a specific input device | A game can disable voice chat or ignore the system default. |
If a headset offers only one combined device, choose that device at each available layer. If it offers separate Game and Chat devices, use the Game endpoint for game playback and the Chat endpoint for the voice application where the manufacturer’s instructions require it.
Set up a gaming headset on a Windows PC
1. Select the playback and recording devices
- Open Windows sound settings and view the available output and input devices.
- Identify the headset or its wireless receiver. If the model provides separate endpoints, select the Game-labeled endpoint as playback and the Chat-labeled endpoint as the microphone or chat device, following the product’s instructions.
- Speak into the boom and watch the input meter. A moving meter confirms that Windows is receiving microphone signal; it does not by itself prove that a particular game is using that microphone.
The labels differ by model and Windows version. The SteelSeries Arctis Pro documentation uses “Arctis Pro Game Audio” for playback and “Arctis Pro Chat” for recording, which illustrates why selecting a similarly named but incorrect endpoint can produce one-way audio.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Check per-application routing
Windows can assign a game or chat program a different output than the system default. If you hear a game but not party chat, or hear chat while the game is silent, inspect the application’s audio-device choice and Windows’ per-app volume or output assignment. Set the game to the headset’s Game or combined playback endpoint and the chat program to the headset’s Chat endpoint when those channels exist.
Close and reopen the game after changing devices if it does not immediately detect the new input. Some games read the device only at launch.

3. Configure the chat application
Open the voice application’s audio settings and explicitly choose the headset microphone and the desired chat output instead of leaving both on “Default” while troubleshooting. Confirm that the application’s input meter responds, then make a short test call or use its built-in microphone test if available.
4. Set the game’s own voice options
Enter the game’s Audio, Voice, or Communications menu. Ensure voice chat is enabled, select the intended input device when the game offers that choice, and check push-to-talk or open-microphone mode. The Apex Legends voice-chat instructions, for instance, specifically direct players to enable voice chat and choose the voice-chat input device in Audio settings. That menu path is game-specific, not a rule for every title.
Set up a gaming headset on macOS
Choose the headset in system sound
Open macOS sound settings and select the headset or receiver for output and the headset microphone for input. If the product exposes separate Game and Chat endpoints, assign them according to its documentation. The Arctis Pro guide distinguishes game output from chat input on macOS as well as Windows.
Verify the application
Check the game and chat application’s own audio preferences after selecting the macOS devices. An application that was open before the headset connected may continue using the previous microphone or speakers; restart it if the new device is not listed or the input meter remains still.

PS5 and PS4 use different settings paths. Do not apply the PS5 sequence to a PS4.

Choose output and microphone devices
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Select the connected headset as the output device and review the available output options.
- Open Settings > Sound > Microphone.
- Choose the headset microphone as the input device.
- Speak normally and adjust Adjust Microphone Level until your voice is clear without constantly reaching the maximum.
These paths and microphone checks come from PlayStation’s voice-chat troubleshooting guidance. Menu wording can change with system software, but the separate Audio Output and Microphone areas are the important distinction.
Adjust the PS5 game/chat mix
Open the PS5 voice-chat card while you are in a party or game chat and use its voice-chat balance slider to favor game sound or chat. This is a relative mix: moving it toward chat does not repair a missing microphone or an incorrectly routed game output.
If the headset has its own game/chat buttons, use them only after the console and applications are sending the correct channels. A hardware control cannot create a chat channel that the game or console has not routed.
Set up a headset on PlayStation 4
- Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
- Choose the headset as the input device and output device where the available options permit.
- Use the microphone-level adjustment and the headset’s physical mute control to confirm that the input is active.
PlayStation documents this path separately from PS5 in its voice-chat troubleshooting page. The same page notes that PS4 specifications do not allow voice chat and game audio to output to both the headset and the TV at the same time. If you expect simultaneous headset and television sound, that platform limitation—not a faulty microphone—may explain the result.
Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile connections
Connection and microphone support depend on the exact headset, console model, controller, adapter, and mobile device. A 3.5 mm cable is used in the cited Arctis Pro example for Xbox, Switch, and mobile, while its PC and PlayStation configuration uses a wired USB ChatMix connection. Treat that as a model-specific example, not a universal compatibility promise.

- Confirm that the device has a compatible 3.5 mm headset socket or that the required adapter is supported.
- Insert the plug fully; a partially inserted four-pole plug can leave audio working while the microphone does not.
- Check the console, controller, or phone privacy settings if the microphone is not detected.
- Verify compatibility for voice chat, not just stereo playback. Some adapters carry sound but not microphone signals.
If the headset works on one platform but not another, compare the connection standard and adapter requirements before assuming the microphone has failed.
Configure voice chat inside the game
System audio can be correct while a game has voice chat disabled, uses push-to-talk, or has a different input selected. After selecting the system devices:
- Open the game’s Audio, Voice Chat, or Communications settings.
- Turn voice chat on.
- Choose the headset microphone if an input-device menu is present.
- Set the chat mode (open microphone or push-to-talk) and its activation key or button.
- Check the game’s voice and microphone volume sliders.
- Join a party or match and watch for a speaking indicator while talking.
Use the title’s own support documentation for exact labels. For example, EA’s Apex Legends guide covers its voice-chat toggle and input-device selection; those instructions should not be presented as a universal menu path for other games.

Sony’s INZONE H5 Help Guide states: “You can adjust the volume balance between the game sound and voice chat with the GAME/CHAT (GAME/CHAT BALANCE) button.” The feature applies to supported hardware and the channels assigned to it. Sony’s INZONE troubleshooting guidance also emphasizes correct assignment of game and chat application outputs when using endpoint-based balance.

On PS5, use the voice-chat card’s balance slider. On a PC, use the headset’s mixer or the game and chat applications’ volume controls when available. If one source is completely absent, fix output routing first; balancing cannot restore a signal that is not reaching the headset.
Voice-chat troubleshooting: follow this order
Teammates cannot hear you
- Check the physical mute switch and the mute button in the party or game.
- Move the boom into its speaking position.
- Confirm that the operating system or console input is the headset microphone.
- Confirm that the game’s voice chat is enabled and its input device is correct.
- Check microphone level or input gain; watch the input meter while speaking.
- On PC, inspect the chat application’s own input selection and per-application permissions.
PlayStation’s guidance and Sony’s INZONE troubleshooting both call out mute state, input-device selection, microphone level, and microphone position as early checks. Do these before changing unrelated output settings.
You hear chat but not the game
- Check the system playback device.
- Check the game’s output device or volume mixer.
- If the headset has separate channels, confirm that game audio is assigned to the Game endpoint.
- Check whether the game is muted or routed to a monitor, TV, or another output.
- Reconnect or restart the game after changing its device selection.
You hear the game but not chat
- Confirm that you joined the intended party or in-game voice channel.
- Check the chat application’s output device.
- For a split-channel headset, assign chat playback to the Chat endpoint.
- Check the party or game-chat volume and make sure individual players are not muted.
- Verify that the game’s voice chat is enabled.
The microphone meter never moves
After checking mute, connection, input selection, and microphone level, try another compatible headset or controller to isolate the failing part. PlayStation specifically recommends trying another headset or controller as an isolation step. If the alternate device works, inspect the original headset, cable, adapter, or receiver; if neither works, revisit the console or computer input settings and privacy controls.
Recommended Free Tools
The mix sounds wrong or changes unexpectedly
- Identify whether you are adjusting master volume, game volume, chat volume, or a true game/chat balance control.
- Check that the game and chat applications are assigned to the channels your headset’s mixer expects.
- Reset application-specific volume assignments if Windows or the chat program is sending one app to a different endpoint.
- Use the platform’s balance slider or the headset’s Game/Chat control instead of pushing the master volume to extremes.
When replacing the headset is justified
Buy new hardware only after the basic routing checks establish that the current headset is unsuitable or defective. A replacement is reasonable when the headset lacks a connector supported by your platform, has no working microphone after testing another cable or controller, or cannot provide the channels needed for the game/chat controls you want.
Before purchasing, verify:
- Platform compatibility for your exact console, computer, phone, or controller.
- Connection type: USB, 3.5 mm, wireless receiver, or a required adapter.
- Whether microphone input works through that connection, not merely stereo playback.
- Whether the product exposes separate Game and Chat endpoints if you need independent routing.
- Where mute, volume, and game/chat controls are located and which platforms support them.
There is no evidence here for ranking headsets by microphone quality, sound quality, latency, or durability. Compatibility and correct configuration are the defensible first decisions for clear voice chat and game audio.
