The supported way to start a FiveM roleplay server in 2026 is to install the latest FXServer artifact, launch its bundled txAdmin panel, link a Cfx.re account, create a server registration key in the Cfx Portal, and deploy a recipe. You can run that stack on Windows, Linux, or a managed game-server host. Once the base server works, add a framework such as QBCore, ESX, or Qbox, connect its database, configure roleplay resources, secure administration, and test privately before opening it to players.

What you need before installing

FiveM server software is commonly called FXServer. The official setup supports a self-managed Windows or Linux machine and managed game-server providers. txAdmin is not a separate download or paid add-on; it is included with FXServer.

For GTAV Enhanced, follow the current artifact naming used by the official download channel. The official installation guidance also calls for the Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable where applicable. Do not assume a package from an older tutorial is still the correct build.

For a managed FiveM option, Godlike.Host provides FiveM hosting through its own Pterodactyl-based game panel, with a task scheduler, sub-user permissions, SFTP/FTP access, and 24/7/365 support by live chat or ticket. Its FiveM game page also offers a free 1 GB server card for 10 slots; it must be extended every 3 hours and has limited panel features and one location. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized FiveM hosts (fivem.net, 10 Oct 2026).

A managed host may already supply FXServer, network ports, and a txAdmin link. Before paying, confirm the current artifact channel, CPU and RAM allocation, player-slot limit, DDoS and network policy, automated-backup schedule, database access, support response, export or migration process, and total recurring cost. Prices and affiliate terms change, so verify them on the provider’s current plan page rather than relying on an old comparison.

Install FXServer on Windows or Linux

1. Download and extract the artifact

1. Open the official Cfx server-download route and choose the latest recommended build for your operating system.
2. Create a dedicated server directory rather than extracting into a temporary Downloads folder. A path such as C:FXServerserver on Windows or /opt/fxserver/server on Linux keeps binaries, configuration, and data organized.
3. Extract the archive into that directory. Keep the artifact folder separate from the persistent data folder that txAdmin will create or use.
4. On Linux, ensure the launcher can execute with chmod +x run.sh. On Windows, install any prerequisite runtime requested by the current official guide, including the Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable for the relevant GTAV Enhanced setup.

2. Start FXServer for the first time

Do not pass +exec server.cfg on the first boot. Starting without an exec argument lets txAdmin present its initial setup flow.

• Windows: run FXServer.exe from the artifact directory.
• Linux: run ./run.sh from the artifact directory.

Watch the console. It prints a local txAdmin URL and a one-time PIN. The default local panel address is http://localhost:40120. If you are administering a remote machine, use the address and access method provided by that host; do not expose the panel broadly just to make it convenient.

3. Link txAdmin to your account

1. Open the URL printed in the console.
2. Select Link account and authorize the Cfx.re account in the browser.
3. Create the requested backup password and store it in a password manager. It is separate from your normal account password and is useful if the panel needs recovery.
4. Accept the Creator Platform and txAdmin license terms.

1. In txAdmin, enter a recognizable server name.
2. Choose Popular Recipes.
3. Select the CFX Default FiveM template for a minimal starting point. This gives you a known-good base before you add roleplay systems.
4. Keep the suggested data location unless you have a deliberate storage layout. If you change it, record the path because it contains the files you will back up and migrate.
5. Open the Recipe Deployer.
6. In the Cfx Portal, choose Create a key, name the key for this server, generate it, and copy it.
7. Paste the registration key into txAdmin and run the recipe.
8. Wait for the deployment to finish. Read the console for download, permission, or dependency errors instead of closing the panel.
9. Review the generated configuration, click Save and Run Server, and wait for FXServer to finish starting.
10. Connect with the FiveM client. Test locally first when possible, then test from a different network so you know the public route works.

Keep the registration key private. Treat it like an infrastructure credential: do not publish it in a screenshot, commit it to a public repository, or paste it into a support forum.

Configure a vanilla server and its network

The generated profile is a convenient starting point, but understanding the basic configuration makes later troubleshooting easier. A vanilla configuration normally contains a license-key entry and TCP and UDP endpoints. A minimal pattern is:

Replace the key with the value generated for your server. The example game endpoint is port 30120; it is not a universal requirement. If you select another port, use that port consistently in the configuration, host firewall, provider panel, and connection instructions.

The txAdmin panel and the game endpoint are different services. The example txAdmin port is 40120, while the example FiveM endpoint is 30120. Keep those rules distinct and expose only the ports needed for your deployment. The cited configuration examples establish common values, not a firewall policy that fits every operating system or provider.

Windows networking checks

• Create inbound firewall rules for the chosen TCP and UDP game endpoint.
• If the server is behind a router, forward the selected ports to the host’s private address and reserve that address so it does not change.
• Allow FXServer through the firewall only for the profiles and interfaces you actually use.
• Leave txAdmin restricted to localhost, a private management network, or a provider’s protected access path whenever possible.

Linux networking checks

• Open the selected TCP and UDP endpoint in the host firewall and any cloud security group.
• Run FXServer under a dedicated service account rather than root.
• Use a process supervisor or system service so a crash does not require an interactive shell to restart the server.
• Restrict the txAdmin port to your administration network and keep operating-system packages patched.

Choose a roleplay framework

Cfx describes a framework as a foundational structure that simplifies creation of FiveM resources. A framework supplies conventions and core resources; it does not automatically create a finished roleplay community. Compare QBCore, ESX, and Qbox against the scripts you intend to run, their database requirements, maintenance activity, administration tooling, and the cost of migrating later.

There is no universal winner. A framework with a large catalog is not automatically the best choice if the scripts you need target another API or database schema. Make a short inventory of required systems, then install only one framework in a test profile. Running overlapping core resources from different frameworks usually creates duplicate events, conflicting player data, and difficult-to-diagnose errors.

Connect the database safely

Persistent roleplay depends on a database for more than character names. Identity, inventory, cash, bank balances, jobs, businesses, owned items, housing, punishments, and audit records may all be stored there.

1. Install MySQL or MariaDB on the same host or on a private database host.
2. Create a dedicated database and user with a strong password. Give that account only the permissions required by the framework.
3. Import the framework’s schema and run migrations in the order documented by its current release.
4. Enter the connection details in the framework’s configuration, not in a public forum or repository.
5. Restart FXServer and confirm that the framework connects without authentication, schema, or migration errors.
6. Create a test character, disconnect, restart the server, and reconnect. Verify that identity, inventory, money, and job data persist.

Back up the database before framework updates, schema migrations, recipe redeployments, or major resource changes. A file backup alone cannot restore data that exists only in the database.

Build the roleplay experience in layers

After the base profile starts, add gameplay systems in a controlled order. Change one logical group at a time and restart between groups so an error has a small search area.

Identity and player lifecycle

• Character creation and deletion rules.
• Identity persistence after reconnecting.
• Spawn selection, last-location behavior, death state, and respawn permissions.
• Handling for duplicate identifiers, abandoned characters, and database rollback.

Jobs, businesses, and economy

• Job grades and promotion or removal permissions.
• Business ownership, shared accounts, payroll, taxes, and item costs.
• Cash and bank balances, transaction logs, item ownership, and anti-duplication checks.
• Prices and payouts that cannot be changed by a client-side menu alone.

Inventory and world interaction

• Item definitions, weight or slot limits, storage locations, crafting, and usable items.
• Vehicle ownership, keys, garages, impound rules, and recovery after a crash.
• Interaction zones and permissions for police, medical, mechanic, and civilian activities.

Voice, chat, and conduct

• Publish voice and text-chat rules before inviting testers.
• Define combat logging, fail-RP, exploit reporting, harassment, and out-of-character communication rules.
• Decide how moderators collect evidence and how players appeal warnings, kicks, or bans.

Set permissions and moderation before going public

Use the smallest staff permissions that accomplish each job. Separate owner, developer, senior moderator, moderator, and support roles instead of giving every staff member unrestricted console access.

• Create an emergency owner account and store its recovery details offline.
• Require strong, unique passwords and account protection for every administrator.
• Test ban, warn, kick, spectate, teleport, and report workflows with a staff-only test character.
• Log administrative actions and decide who can review those logs.
• Write an appeals process with a contact method, response expectation, and evidence-retention period.
• Document who can change economy values, grant items, edit characters, or restore backups.

Backups, updates, and change control

Before changing a working installation, back up the server folder, server.cfg, framework resources, database, and txAdmin txData. Keep at least one copy outside the live host. Label backups with the date, artifact version, framework version, and database migration level.

1. Announce a maintenance window and stop player activity.
2. Export or snapshot the database.
3. Copy the server resources, configuration, and txAdmin data.
4. Apply the artifact or resource update in a staging profile first.
5. Read startup logs and test login, persistence, jobs, inventory, permissions, and voice.
6. Promote the tested change to production only after recording the previous versions and a rollback path.

Do not deploy a new recipe over an existing data folder without a backup. A recipe can replace configuration or resource assumptions that your live framework depends on.

Run a closed beta before listing the server

Invite a small group of testers with different roles instead of opening immediately to the public. Ask testers to perform reproducible actions and record the exact steps, character identifier, resource name, client console message, server console message, and timestamp for each failure.

• Create several characters and reconnect them after a full server restart.
• Test civilian, police, medical, mechanic, and business workflows if those jobs are installed.
• Move items and money between players and storage, then verify database records after reconnecting.
• Trigger moderation actions and confirm that permissions prevent unauthorized staff operations.
• Test connection from outside the host’s local network.
• Measure resource errors and client disconnects during the busiest scripted scenario you expect at launch.

Troubleshoot the common checkpoints

txAdmin never appears

Confirm that FXServer was started without +exec server.cfg for the first boot. Read the console for the printed URL and PIN, and open the exact address it provides. If a managed provider is supplying the server, use its txAdmin link rather than assuming the local address applies.

Players cannot connect

Verify that FXServer is still running, that the configured TCP and UDP endpoint matches the port opened in the host firewall, and that any router or cloud security group forwards the same port. Test from a separate network. A server that works on localhost can still be unreachable from the public internet.

The recipe fails during deployment

Check the Cfx registration key for transcription errors, confirm that the selected data location is writable, and read the failed resource or download name in the console. If the chosen framework needs MySQL or MariaDB, verify that the service is running and that the database name, user, password, host, port, and schema are correct before redeploying.

The framework starts but data does not persist

Inspect the database connection error, confirm that migrations completed, and check whether the resource is pointing at the same database used by the framework core. Test with a new character after a restart. Do not delete tables to make an error disappear; restore a backup or use the framework’s documented migration procedure.

A new resource causes client or server errors

Check its required dependencies, load order, framework version, and configuration names. Disable only the new resource, restart, and compare logs. If the problem disappears, restore the backup and install a compatible release rather than stacking unverified patches on the live server.

What the ongoing cost really includes

FXServer and txAdmin are software components, while hosting, operating-system administration, database service, backups, and support can create recurring costs. The exact price depends on the provider, region, allocated resources, player limit, backup policy, and billing term. No single current price applies to every FiveM deployment.

For a self-hosted installation, budget for reliable hardware or virtual-machine capacity, electricity or infrastructure charges, network service, storage for backups, and your own maintenance time. For managed hosting, compare the complete monthly total and confirm whether database access, additional backups, extra ports, migration exports, and support are included or charged separately.
