The simplest setup is one HDMI cable from the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s matching ARC/eARC port. Then select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output, enable the appropriate ARC/eARC and bitstream options, and play a title that is actually offered in Dolby Atmos by your device, service, region, and subscription. If the TV has no ARC/eARC, route an Atmos source through the soundbar’s HDMI input and send video to the TV through the bar’s HDMI output.

What you need before connecting anything

Atmos reaches your ears only when every part of the playback chain supports it. Check the TV, soundbar, playback device, HDMI connections, streaming service, title and subscription. A soundbar labeled “Dolby Atmos” cannot add native Atmos metadata to a program that was delivered in another format, although some bars can apply their own surround processing.

  • TV: Look for an HDMI socket marked ARC or eARC. A TV without either feature can still work when the source is connected through a soundbar with HDMI passthrough.
  • Soundbar: Confirm that it has an ARC/eARC HDMI port for the one-cable TV-return method, or an HDMI input and HDMI output for passthrough.
  • Source: A smart-TV app, streaming stick, game console, Blu-ray player or set-top box must output Atmos and be connected through a path that carries it.
  • Cable: Use an HDMI cable suitable for the formats and speed specified in both manuals. A new cable is not automatically required if your existing cable meets those requirements.
  • Content access: The service, your subscription tier, the device, the specific title and your region must all make Atmos available.

Dolby recommends pairing eARC-capable devices where possible because it supports a broader range of audio formats. Both the TV and bar must support eARC, and the cable must be appropriate for the devices. Exact codec support and passthrough behavior remain model-specific, so check the manuals rather than assuming that two products with an Atmos logo support identical formats.

Identify where each source is connected before you start. A title played in a built-in TV app follows the TV-to-soundbar ARC/eARC route. A streaming stick or console plugged into the TV also relies on the TV sending its audio back over ARC/eARC. A player plugged into the soundbar follows the passthrough route instead. Drawing this signal path on paper can prevent connecting a cable to an ordinary HDMI input and then wondering why no return audio appears.

Also check that the TV and soundbar are running versions of firmware supported by their manufacturers. Updates can alter menu labels or compatibility, so record the exact model numbers before looking up instructions. Do not assume that a cable advertised for one device automatically guarantees every audio and video format on another; the manuals’ requirements take priority.

Method 1: Connect the TV and soundbar with ARC or eARC

For TV apps and devices plugged into the TV, Dolby describes the simplest arrangement as connecting the TV and soundbar with a single ARC/eARC cable. This lets the TV send return audio to the bar while the TV continues to handle the picture.

  1. Find the ports. On the TV, locate the HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC. On the soundbar, find the HDMI port with the same label. Do not use an ordinary TV HDMI input for this connection.
  2. Make the connection. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the other into the soundbar’s ARC/eARC port. Push both connectors fully home.
  3. Power up in a clean state. Turn on the TV and soundbar. If either device fails to detect the other, switch both off, unplug them briefly, reconnect the HDMI cable, and power the TV on before the soundbar.
  4. Select the bar on the TV. In the TV’s sound or audio-output menu, choose the HDMI ARC/eARC or external soundbar output instead of the internal speakers. Label wording differs by manufacturer.
  5. Enable return-audio controls. Turn on ARC or eARC in the TV settings if it is not enabled automatically. HDMI-CEC is optional for audio transmission, but enabling it usually allows the TV remote to control the bar’s volume and power. CEC has different names on different brands.
  6. Set the digital signal format. Choose a bitstream, pass-through or equivalent digital-output option when available. Dolby’s setup guidance specifically calls for bitstream when passing Atmos to a soundbar; “PCM” can cause the TV to decode or downmix the signal first.
  7. Test an Atmos title. Start a title that displays an Atmos badge on its details page. Verify the bar’s information panel or app reports Dolby Atmos, if your model provides that indicator.

With this topology, sources connected directly to the TV travel through the TV’s audio-return connection. A source plugged into a separate HDMI input on the soundbar instead uses the bar’s own decoding and video output, as described below.

If the TV offers several HDMI inputs but only one has an ARC/eARC label, only that labeled socket carries the return-audio function. Moving the cable to another input may still show a picture from a source, but it will not provide the intended TV-to-bar audio path. Likewise, the bar’s ARC/eARC socket is distinct from any HDMI input intended for a disc player or console.

Do you need eARC for Dolby Atmos?

No. ARC can carry Atmos in some configurations, but the exact codec, bitrate and behavior depend on both devices and the source path. Do not infer a particular quality level merely from the word “Atmos.”

eARC is Dolby’s preferred pairing when both products support it because it provides broader format support. It requires eARC on both ends and a suitable HDMI cable. As a device-specific example, Samsung UK’s setup information updated August 11, 2026 lists Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Atmos, over HDMI-eARC, and Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Atmos, over HDMI-eARC and HDMI for the products covered by that page. That table applies to those Samsung products; it is not a universal specification for every TV and soundbar.

Connection What it is best for What must be true Format caution
TV ARC to soundbar ARC TV apps and devices connected to the TV Both ports support ARC and the TV output is configured for external audio Atmos support and codec handling vary by model and source
TV eARC to soundbar eARC TV apps and a wider range of audio formats Both devices support eARC and the cable is suitable Check the manuals for lossless formats and passthrough limits
Source to soundbar HDMI input, soundbar HDMI output to TV TVs without ARC/eARC or sources that need direct bar decoding The bar has HDMI input/output and supports the source’s video and audio formats The bar’s passthrough capability determines what reaches the TV

The practical choice is therefore not simply “ARC or eARC?” It is whether both devices support the same return-audio standard and whether the source’s format is accepted over that connection. If one component is ARC-only, the system operates within that component’s limits even when another component is eARC-capable.

Method 2: Use HDMI passthrough when the TV has no ARC/eARC

Passthrough puts the soundbar between the source and TV. It is useful for a streaming box, console, disc player or other source that can output Atmos when the TV has no audio-return port.

  1. Connect the source’s HDMI output to the soundbar’s HDMI input.
  2. Connect the soundbar’s HDMI output (sometimes marked HDMI OUT or eARC/ARC) to an ordinary HDMI input on the TV.
  3. Select the soundbar’s HDMI input as the active source, then select the corresponding HDMI input on the TV for video.
  4. Set the source’s audio output to bitstream or its Dolby/Atmos setting, and confirm that the bar accepts both the source’s audio and the TV’s video resolution, HDR and refresh-rate requirements.

Passthrough is not automatically equivalent to ARC/eARC. The soundbar may limit video formats, and a source may output a codec that the bar cannot decode. Read the specifications for the exact source, bar and TV combination before buying a cable or changing the wiring.

This method also means the bar must remain powered and set to the correct input for the picture to reach the TV. If the TV shows “no signal,” first select the matching HDMI input on the TV, then confirm that the bar is on its source input rather than ARC/eARC. If a console or player supports multiple video modes, compare its resolution, HDR and refresh-rate settings with the bar’s passthrough specifications. A soundbar can decode the audio correctly yet still fail to pass a particular video mode.

CEC may still be available in a passthrough arrangement, but names and control behavior vary. Treat remote-control convenience as a separate feature from Atmos transmission: troubleshoot the signal path and audio format first.

Configure the TV, source and soundbar settings

TV audio output

Choose the external HDMI/ARC/eARC sound output rather than TV speakers. If the TV offers separate controls for ARC and eARC, select eARC or “Auto” when both devices support it. Keep digital audio output on Bitstream, Pass-Through or Auto as appropriate; avoid a setting that forces PCM if you want the bar to receive the encoded Atmos stream.

Some televisions expose ARC/eARC as a separate toggle from the general speaker selector. Both settings may need to be enabled. If “Auto” is the only choice, verify in the manual what the TV sends in that mode and test with a known Atmos title rather than relying on the label alone.

HDMI-CEC

CEC is not the Atmos format itself. It is the control channel that can let one remote operate power and volume across HDMI. Turn it on when you want that convenience, but troubleshoot audio separately from CEC if sound works while remote control does not.

Source device

Set a streaming player, console or disc player to output bitstream or Dolby audio rather than stereo PCM when the device offers that choice. On a source connected through passthrough, select the soundbar’s HDMI input; on a source connected to the TV, leave the TV on the corresponding input and let ARC/eARC return its audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For streaming devices, the app’s title page and the device’s audio setting both matter. A device can be Atmos-capable in general but send only stereo or another format when its output is configured that way. Change one setting at a time and replay the same title so you can identify which setting affected the result.

Soundbar input and mode

Select the HDMI ARC/eARC input for TV-return audio or the numbered HDMI input used for passthrough. Keep the bar’s audio mode on Auto, Direct or the manufacturer’s Atmos-capable mode while testing. Virtual-surround modes can change the presentation and make the display report a processed mode instead of the incoming format.

Example: Samsung menu labels

Samsung UK’s instructions are an example, not a universal menu path. Relevant options on supported Samsung setups include eARC Mode: Auto, Digital Output Audio Format: Auto or Pass-Through, Dolby Atmos Compatibility, and HDMI-CEC, called Anynet+. Samsung notes that menu names and locations vary by product, so use your own model’s manual if those labels are absent.

Verify that your content is actually Atmos

Start with the title’s information page and look for the Dolby Atmos badge. Then verify that the playback device and streaming service support Atmos on your TV platform and that your subscription includes it. Services can impose device, plan and regional restrictions, and a title may have Atmos on one edition or region but not another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the service’s device requirements for your exact TV or player.
  • Confirm the plan or subscription tier includes Atmos content.
  • Use a title whose details page explicitly shows the Atmos badge.
  • Allow the stream to reach its selected quality; a temporary lower-quality stream may not expose every audio option.

A non-Atmos soundtrack will remain non-Atmos through an Atmos-capable connection. A soundbar’s “movie,” “surround” or upmix mode may create a wider effect, but that is different from receiving a native Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

If the badge is missing, test another title before changing wiring. Also check whether the service displays different audio options for the same title on a television app, streaming stick or game console. The account, device, region and subscription all form part of the eligibility check; an Atmos-capable bar cannot override a service restriction.

Place the soundbar so Atmos speakers can work

Place the bar below the TV, centered as closely as practical, with its front and side speakers unobstructed. Do not cover the grille with the TV stand, a decorative panel or a soundbar cover. If the model has upward-firing drivers, leave a clear path from those drivers to the ceiling; a shelf directly above the bar can block the reflected height cues. Face the listening position toward the TV and follow the model’s specified clearance and angle guidance.

Placement cannot correct an incorrectly routed signal, but a correctly routed Atmos stream can still sound ordinary if speakers are blocked or the bar is placed far off-center. Remove temporary packaging, decorative fabric or objects resting on the bar before testing. Follow any model-specific instructions about distance from the wall, ceiling clearance or calibration; those requirements differ between designs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the bar plays sound but does not show Dolby Atmos

Work through these checks in order. Change one item at a time, then replay the same confirmed Atmos title.

  1. Inspect the cable path. The cable must be in the TV’s ARC/eARC socket and the soundbar’s matching ARC/eARC socket for TV-return audio. For passthrough, verify source-to-bar HDMI input and bar-to-TV HDMI output.
  2. Confirm device detection. The TV should list the soundbar as an external HDMI audio device. If not, power-cycle both products, reseat the connectors and try the manufacturer-recommended HDMI cable.
  3. Check the TV output. Select HDMI ARC/eARC or external audio, turn on ARC/eARC, and set digital output to Bitstream, Pass-Through or Auto rather than forced PCM.
  4. Check the source output. Ensure the player or console is sending Dolby/bitstream audio and that its HDMI output is connected to the intended input.
  5. Check the title and account. Look for the Atmos badge and verify the service, device, subscription and region. A title without Atmos will not trigger the bar’s Atmos indicator.
  6. Check the bar’s input and display. Select the correct HDMI source and consult the bar’s information screen or app. Some models do not display the incoming codec continuously even when they decode it.
  7. Check model-specific compatibility. Confirm that the TV, bar and source support the same audio and video formats. A TV may accept the picture while the bar rejects the audio codec, or a bar may pass video but not a particular resolution.
  8. Apply firmware updates only as directed. Firmware can change menu labels or compatibility. Follow the exact update and reset procedure in the manuals; do not assume a factory reset is the first step.

For Samsung equipment, specifically revisit eARC Mode, Digital Output Audio Format, Dolby Atmos Compatibility and Anynet+ as applicable. Samsung’s menu paths differ by product, so do not apply a setting from another model blindly.

If sound works but the bar’s front display never spells out “Atmos,” do not treat that alone as proof of failure. Some bars show the incoming codec briefly, show it only in an app, or display a processing mode instead. Use the model’s information screen and the title’s confirmed badge together. If both devices report a different format, continue with the cable, output and source checks above.

Quick setup checklist

  • TV and soundbar both support Atmos; eARC is available on both where broader format support is needed.
  • ARC/eARC port on the TV is connected to the matching port on the bar, or the source is correctly routed through HDMI passthrough.
  • TV output is external HDMI audio with ARC/eARC enabled.
  • Digital audio and source output use Bitstream, Pass-Through or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
  • HDMI-CEC is enabled only if you want shared remote control.
  • The title, service, device, subscription and region all provide Atmos.
  • Soundbar drivers, especially upward-firing ones, have a clear path and the bar is centered below the TV.

Frequently asked questions

Which HDMI port should I use?

Use the TV port explicitly labeled ARC or eARC and the soundbar port carrying the same label. For passthrough, connect the source to an HDMI input on the bar and the bar’s HDMI output to any suitable TV HDMI input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy a new HDMI cable?

Not necessarily. Use a cable that meets the speed and format requirements stated in both device manuals. Replace it only when the existing cable does not meet those requirements, is damaged, or causes an unstable connection.

Can a TV without ARC or eARC still play Atmos?

Yes, when an Atmos source connects to a soundbar with HDMI input and output, and the bar can decode the source while passing the required video format to the TV. Compatibility must be checked for the exact models.

Why does my soundbar play audio but not show Dolby Atmos?

Check the ARC/eARC port assignment, external-audio selection, bitstream or pass-through output, source settings, and the title’s Atmos badge. Also remember that some bars do not continuously display the incoming codec.

Is ARC always lower quality than eARC?

ARC and eARC have different capabilities, but the actual Atmos codec and quality depend on the devices and source. eARC is Dolby’s preferred pairing for broader support; consult both manuals instead of assuming a codec from the connection name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does HDMI-CEC have to be enabled for Atmos?

CEC is primarily a control feature for shared power and volume. It is useful for convenience, but audio transmission and CEC troubleshooting should be treated separately because sound can work even when remote control does not.

Will an Atmos soundbar convert every movie to Atmos?

No. A non-Atmos soundtrack remains non-Atmos. The bar may offer virtual-surround or upmix modes, but those are processing choices rather than native Dolby Atmos delivery.

Where should an up-firing soundbar go?

Place it below and near the center of the TV with the upward-firing drivers uncovered and their path to the ceiling clear. Follow the model’s own clearance and placement instructions.

When to consult the manuals

Use the TV and soundbar manuals for the exact HDMI port labels, supported codecs, cable requirements, passthrough limits, menu paths and firmware behavior. Dolby’s connection and placement guidance is intentionally general; Samsung’s format tables and settings describe Samsung products, not every Atmos system. If your devices disagree about a format, the manuals for those exact model numbers are the authoritative source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which HDMI port should I use for a Dolby Atmos soundbar?

Connect the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s matching ARC/eARC port. Use the bar’s HDMI input and output instead when routing a source through passthrough.

Do I need eARC to get Dolby Atmos?

No. ARC can carry Atmos in some configurations, but codec support varies. eARC is preferred when both devices support it because it offers broader format support.

Why does my soundbar play sound but not report Atmos?

Verify the port wiring, external-audio and ARC/eARC settings, bitstream or pass-through output, source settings, and the title’s Atmos badge. Some bars show the codec only briefly or in their app.

Can I use a TV without ARC or eARC?

Yes, if the Atmos source connects to a soundbar with HDMI input and output and the bar supports the source’s audio and video formats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a special HDMI cable?

Use a cable that meets the speed and format requirements in both manuals. Buying a new cable is unnecessary when your current one already meets them.

Will every movie play in Atmos on an Atmos soundbar?

No. The title, service, device, subscription and region must all provide Atmos. Other soundtracks may use the bar’s processing modes but are not native Atmos.

The Bottom Line

Connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s matching port, or route an Atmos source through the bar’s HDMI input and output when ARC/eARC is unavailable. Select external audio, use bitstream or pass-through as appropriate, verify the title and subscription actually provide Atmos, and keep the bar’s speakers—especially upward-firing drivers—unobstructed. For codec, cable and passthrough limits, follow the manuals for your exact models.
