Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
Yes—you can run a complete, browser-accessible development environment on a Linux VPS. The reliable design has three separate layers: the VPS provides the Linux host, Docker runs isolated services, and an IDE layer (Coder or code-server) provides browser and remote-editor access. Put project files and IDE configuration on persistent volumes, define dependencies with a Dev Container, and protect the IDE with SSH forwarding or authenticated HTTPS.
Coder is the better fit when you need multiple workspaces, templates, lifecycle controls, or team access. The lighter code-server image is usually sufficient for one developer or a small number of projects. The procedure below covers both choices without tying your project to a particular VPS vendor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the finished architecture looks like
A VPS does not automatically become a cloud IDE when Docker is installed. Each layer has a distinct responsibility:
- Linux VPS: supplies CPU, memory, disk, networking, the kernel, SSH, and the firewall.
- Docker Engine and Compose: provide the container runtime and a repeatable way to start related services.
- Workspace or IDE layer: Coder manages workspaces and templates; code-server runs a browser version of VS Code for a project or user.
- Dev Container: describes compilers, language runtimes, tools, and extensions so the same project can be rebuilt consistently.
- Access layer: SSH forwarding keeps the service private, while a reverse proxy can publish it over HTTPS with authentication and WebSocket support.
This separation matters when you troubleshoot. A browser cannot connect because of a firewall, a reverse proxy, an IDE bind address, or a failed container even though Docker itself is healthy.

Choose VPS capacity before installing anything
Size the host for the number of containers, language servers, builds, and simultaneous users rather than for the IDE process alone. Coder’s Docker deployment documentation lists 2 CPU cores and 4 GB of free memory as its free-capacity requirement. That is a documented baseline for the Coder deployment, not a universal recommendation for heavy builds or several concurrent workspaces. Check current requirements for your selected images and workload before ordering a server.
| Resource | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | At least the documented Coder baseline of 2 cores; add cores for parallel builds and multiple language servers. | Compilers, indexing, tests, and containers compete for CPU. |
| Memory | At least 4 GB free for the documented Coder Docker requirement; reserve additional memory for databases, builds, and several workspaces. | Memory pressure can kill language servers or make the browser IDE appear frozen. |
| Disk | Fast persistent storage with room for source trees, Docker layers, dependency caches, logs, and backups. | Containers are disposable, but source code and caches can grow continuously. |
| Networking | SSH access and either a private route or a public address with DNS and TLS capability. | Remote editors, terminals, port forwarding, and image pulls all need reliable connectivity. |
| Operating system | A supported Linux distribution and its current security updates. | Docker packages, firewall syntax, and service management differ by distribution. |
Use a non-root administrator account with sudo, an SSH key, and a recovery path supplied by the VPS provider. Decide whether the IDE should be reachable only from your workstation or from a browser on the public internet; that decision determines the access layer later.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Provision and harden the Linux host
- Create the VPS with a current Linux image and attach persistent storage if your provider offers it separately.
- Apply operating-system updates using the distribution’s package manager. Reboot if the kernel or other core services require it.
- Create or confirm an administrator account that can use sudo. Disable password-only SSH login after verifying key-based login from a second terminal.
- Configure the host firewall. Allow SSH from the addresses or network you actually use. If the IDE remains private, do not open a public IDE port. If you will use a reverse proxy, expose only HTTP/HTTPS as needed and keep the upstream IDE bound to localhost or an internal Docker network.
- Set the correct time zone and hostname. Consistent time makes logs and TLS troubleshooting easier.
- Record the server’s private and public addresses, disk mount points, and recovery console details before deploying containers.
Do not treat a cloud-provider security group as a replacement for the host firewall. Use both where available, and review rules after every architecture change.
2. Install Docker Engine and Compose
Install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin using the current official instructions for the host distribution. Package names and repository setup change, so do not copy an old command sequence intended for a different Linux release. After installation, verify both components:
docker version
docker compose version
Run a harmless test container and remove it afterward:
sudo docker run --rm hello-world
For normal operation, decide whether your administrator account should run Docker without sudo. Adding a user to the docker group is convenient, but membership is effectively privileged: a user who can control the Docker daemon can usually control the host. If you add the group, log out and back in, then verify with docker ps. Keep production administration accounts tightly controlled.

Make sure the Docker daemon starts at boot using your distribution’s service manager. Confirm that the Docker data root is on the intended disk and that log rotation is configured; otherwise image layers and container logs can consume the VPS silently.

3. Pick the IDE layer
| Option | Primary role | Best fit | Access and environment model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coder | Self-hosted workspace platform | Multiple workspaces, templates, lifecycle controls, and team access | Web UI, SSH, VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, web terminal, remote desktop, and Dev Containers |
| code-server | Browser-based VS Code server | One developer or a small number of projects needing a simple browser IDE | Browser, SSH forwarding, or a reverse proxy; containerized server with mounted project and configuration directories |
| Gitpod | Infrastructure-controlled cloud development platform | Standardized environments across a cloud, VPC, or on-premises infrastructure | Browser and editor integrations, including SSH configuration; Dev Containers provide environment consistency |
Coder’s platform documentation describes access through VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, a web terminal, remote desktop, or SSH: https://coder.com/docs/index. Gitpod describes a zero-trust platform that can run in a user’s cloud, VPC, or on-premises infrastructure and uses Dev Containers for consistency: https://www.gitpod.io/docs. Its editor documentation covers SSH configuration and remote-development extensions for VS Code and Cursor: https://www.gitpod.io/docs/gitpod/introduction/editor.
4. Deploy Coder for managed workspaces
Use Coder when the VPS will host more than one repeatable workspace or when you want users to create, rebuild, stop, and connect to environments through a control plane.
Prepare Docker access
Coder’s Docker deployment runs as a non-root user and may need access to the Docker socket. A mismatched owner, group, or mode on /var/run/docker.sock produces permission errors. Check the socket and the account that runs Coder before debugging the application itself. Grant only the access required by your operating model, because Docker-socket access is a host-level privilege boundary.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Deploy the Compose stack
- Read Coder’s current Docker installation guide and download or adapt its official Docker Compose example: https://coder.com/docs/install/server/docker.
- Place the Compose file and its environment file in a dedicated directory owned by the deployment administrator.
- Set the externally reachable access URL before creating workspaces. The URL must match how users will actually open Coder, including its scheme and hostname.
- Review bind mounts and named volumes so the Coder state, templates, and workspace data survive container replacement.
- Start the stack with the Compose command appropriate to the version documented by Coder, then inspect container status and logs.
- Open the configured URL from an administrative workstation and complete the initial account and authentication setup before inviting other users.
Do not publish the raw application port directly just because it responds in a browser. Put Coder behind the same authenticated HTTPS pattern you would use for code-server, or keep it reachable only over a private network.
Create a workspace template
A template should declare the base image, CPU and memory limits, persistent mounts, environment variables, and the Dev Container definition used by the project. Start with one small workspace and rebuild it after every template change. Coder exposes SSH, a web terminal, VS Code integration, port forwarding, and rebuild operations for Dev Container-based workspaces: https://coder.com/docs/user-guides/devcontainers/working-with-dev-containers.
5. Deploy code-server for a lightweight browser IDE
For one project or one primary user, the official codercom/code-server image avoids the additional workspace-management layer. The important details are the bind address, persistent mounts, and file ownership.
Create persistent directories
mkdir -p "$HOME/code-server-config" "$HOME/projects/example"
sudo chown -R "$(id -u):$(id -g)" "$HOME/code-server-config" "$HOME/projects/example"
Keep the project directory outside the container’s writable layer. Mount the configuration directory as well, otherwise extensions, settings, and the server’s state disappear when the container is replaced.

Run the container on localhost
The exact image tag should be selected from the current installation documentation: https://coder.com/docs/code-server/install. A representative run command is:
docker run -d --name code-server
--restart unless-stopped
-e PUID="$(id -u)"
-e PGID="$(id -g)"
-e TZ=UTC
-p 127.0.0.1:8080:8080
-v "$HOME/code-server-config:/home/coder/.config"
-v "$HOME/projects/example:/home/coder/project"
codercom/code-server:latest
Use the image tag and environment-variable names supported by the version you deploy; tags and defaults can change. Binding host port 8080 to 127.0.0.1 deliberately prevents direct public access. Passing the host UID and GID keeps files created from the IDE owned by your normal account instead of root. Confirm ownership with stat or ls -ln after creating a test file.
Inspect startup output with docker logs code-server. If the container exits, check the mounted directory permissions, available disk, and the image architecture before changing the command.
6. Define a reproducible Dev Container
A mounted project directory preserves files, but it does not guarantee that every machine has the same compiler, SDK, CLI tools, or system libraries. Add a .devcontainer directory to the repository and commit its definition.

Replace the sample image and extensions with the toolchain your repository actually needs. Keep secrets out of the file; inject them through the workspace’s secret mechanism or a protected runtime configuration. Pin image versions when reproducibility matters, and document how to update them.
Build and rebuild deliberately
- Open the repository in the remote IDE.
- Choose the Dev Container rebuild operation exposed by your IDE or workspace platform.
- Watch the build output for failed package installs, unavailable architectures, or missing environment variables.
- Run the project’s tests and a clean build inside the rebuilt container.
- Commit the Dev Container definition only after a new developer can reproduce the setup from a clean workspace.
Coder’s Dev Container workflow includes rebuild operations and exposes the resulting workspace through SSH, a web terminal, VS Code integration, and port forwarding: https://coder.com/docs/user-guides/devcontainers/working-with-dev-containers.
7. Keep access private or publish it safely
Private access with SSH forwarding
SSH forwarding is the simplest design when every client device supports SSH. Leave code-server listening on localhost and create a tunnel from your workstation:

ssh -N -L 8080:127.0.0.1:8080 user@your-vps-hostname
Then open http://127.0.0.1:8080 locally. The browser connection never requires a public IDE port. Use a dedicated SSH key, restrict the account, and close the tunnel when finished. The code-server guide identifies SSH forwarding as the recommended approach when all client devices have SSH support: https://coder.com/docs/code-server/guide.
Public browser access through a reverse proxy
Use a public endpoint only when browser access from arbitrary networks is necessary. Assign a domain name, point DNS to the VPS, and place Caddy or NGINX in front of the IDE. The proxy should:
- Obtain and renew a trusted TLS certificate.
- Require authentication before forwarding requests.
- Forward WebSocket upgrade and connection headers.
- Proxy only to the private upstream address or Docker network.
- Apply request-size, timeout, and access-log policies appropriate to your projects.
The code-server guide documents a Caddy setup with Let’s Encrypt and an NGINX configuration, including the WebSocket considerations: https://coder.com/docs/code-server/guide. Match the proxy’s hostname and scheme to the IDE’s configured access URL. A certificate for one hostname does not protect a different hostname or an IP address.
Coder’s documentation gives this explicit warning: “Never expose code-server directly to the internet without some form of authentication and encryption, otherwise someone can take over your machine via the terminal.” Treat the browser IDE as a full remote shell, not as a harmless static web page.
8. Persist data and plan recovery
At minimum, persist these locations outside ephemeral containers:
- Source repositories: the project directory or a dedicated workspace volume.
- IDE configuration: code-server’s
~/.configmount, including settings and extensions. - Workspace state: Coder’s data, templates, and any persistent workspace volumes.
- Service configuration: Compose files, environment files kept outside public repositories, proxy configuration, and firewall notes.
- Build caches: only if their storage cost is justified; caches can usually be regenerated.
Back up repositories and configuration independently of the VPS. Test restoration on a disposable host: a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Exclude credentials from ordinary archives, encrypt backups, and define how to rotate tokens if a backup is exposed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Networking and port-forwarding checklist
Remote development often requires more than the IDE port. A web application running inside a Dev Container may listen on another port and need forwarding through Coder, SSH, or the reverse proxy. For every service, identify:

- The process’s bind address inside the container.
- The container port and host or workspace port mapping.
- Whether the service is intended for the developer only or for external users.
- Whether WebSockets, server-sent events, or long-lived requests are required.
- Whether authentication is provided by the application, the proxy, or both.
Do not expose databases, Docker APIs, or development dashboards publicly just because an application needs local access. Prefer an internal Docker network or a forwarded port, and open a firewall rule only for a documented user-facing endpoint.
10. Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The browser cannot connect
- Check that the container is running with
docker ps. - Read application logs with
docker logs. - Confirm the service is listening on the expected address with the host’s socket tools.
- If using SSH forwarding, verify the local and remote ports in the tunnel command.
- If using a proxy, test DNS, certificate validity, upstream address, and WebSocket forwarding separately.
Files are owned by root
The container user does not match the host user. Stop the container, correct ownership of the mounted directories, and redeploy with the supported UID/GID settings from the current code-server documentation: https://coder.com/docs/code-server/install. Avoid fixing the symptom by making the project world-writable.
Coder reports Docker permission errors
Inspect /var/run/docker.sock ownership and the groups of the account running Coder. Ensure the Compose service’s user and socket permissions agree with the deployment guide: https://coder.com/docs/install/server/docker. Remember that granting Docker-socket access grants broad control over the host.
A Dev Container rebuild fails
- Read the first failing command rather than the final summary line.
- Check that the base image supports the VPS CPU architecture.
- Verify package repositories and DNS from inside the build environment.
- Confirm required secrets and environment variables are available without committing them.
- Run the bootstrap script manually in a clean container to isolate project errors from IDE errors.
The VPS runs out of memory or disk
Check container, image, volume, and log usage. Remove unused images only after confirming that no rollback depends on them, rotate logs, and move persistent data to larger storage when appropriate. If builds and language servers routinely exhaust memory, increase VPS capacity rather than relying on swap as a permanent substitute.
Coder, code-server, or Gitpod?
The choice is primarily about lifecycle and control, not editor branding.
Recommended Free Tools
| Question | Choose Coder when… | Choose code-server when… | Consider Gitpod when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| How many environments? | You need multiple isolated workspaces. | One project or a small number of manually managed projects is enough. | You want standardized environments operated across cloud, VPC, or on-premises infrastructure. |
| How are environments created? | Templates and lifecycle actions should be available to users. | You are comfortable managing a Compose service and mounted directories. | Automated environment setup and Dev Container workflows are central. |
| How do users connect? | Web, SSH, VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, terminal, or remote desktop. | Browser, SSH tunnel, or an authenticated reverse proxy. | Browser and editor integrations, including SSH configuration. |
| Who operates the platform? | Your team manages the VPS and Coder control plane. | An individual administrator manages the host and container. | The organization operates the infrastructure while standardizing developer environments. |
All three approaches still require capacity planning, persistent storage, secure credentials, and a controlled network boundary. Switching IDE layers does not remove those operational responsibilities.
Operational checklist after the first successful login
- Update the VPS and container images on a defined schedule.
- Review firewall, SSH, proxy, and account access whenever a teammate or device changes.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk, inode, container health, and certificate expiry.
- Back up source and configuration data, then perform a test restore.
- Document the external URL, tunnel command, Compose files, volume locations, and recovery procedure.
- Rebuild a Dev Container from a clean checkout after dependency or base-image changes.
- Keep the IDE private unless there is a documented need for public browser access; when public, enforce HTTPS, authentication, and WebSockets through the proxy.
With those controls in place, the VPS remains the durable host, Docker provides repeatable isolation, and the IDE can be replaced or rebuilt without losing the project. The result is a browser-accessible development environment that behaves consistently across laptops and networks while keeping the most sensitive control surfaces—SSH and the Docker daemon—under deliberate administrative control.
