A DayZ dedicated server is installed separately from the DayZ game client. Use SteamCMD to install server app ID 223350, create a serverDZ.cfg, align the launch, firewall and router ports, then start DayZServer (Linux) or DayZServer_x64.exe (Windows). Workshop mods are downloaded with the client app ID 221100, linked into the server directory and authenticated with their .bikey files.
What you need before installing
Choose a Windows or Linux machine that can remain online, has a stable network connection and has enough disk space for the server files, logs, persistence data and any Workshop content. You need administrator access for initial software installation and permission to create firewall and router rules, but the running DayZ process should use a normal operating-system account.

- Windows: a supported 64-bit Windows installation, SteamCMD and permission to open inbound UDP rules.
- Linux: SteamCMD plus the 32-bit compatibility packages required by your distribution. Bohemia Interactive’s Linux instructions install SteamCMD in a user-owned directory rather than running it as root.
- Network: a reachable public address or a correctly configured private-network forward. Carrier-grade NAT, restrictive business firewalls and changing residential IP addresses can prevent inbound connections even when the server itself is healthy.
- Accounts: the official Linux example uses a Steam login placeholder. A community setup reference reports that anonymous login can work for the server download, but availability is environment-dependent, so do not assume it will work everywhere.
Create a dedicated directory layout before downloading. Keeping the install, profiles, logs and persistent mission data identifiable makes upgrades and recovery safer. For example, Linux can use ~/servers/steamcmd/ for SteamCMD and ~/servers/dayz-server/ for the game server; Windows can use C:SteamCMD and C:DayZServer.
Know the DayZ Steam app IDs
The stable dedicated server is a different Steam application from the playable client. Confusing these IDs is a common cause of downloading the wrong files.

Use 223350 for the server itself. Use 221100 only when invoking SteamCMD’s Workshop download command for DayZ client items.
Install SteamCMD and the stable server
Linux installation
Install your distribution’s required 32-bit compatibility libraries, create a user-owned SteamCMD directory, and download SteamCMD using your distribution’s documented method. Do not place the running server under the root account. From the directory containing steamcmd.sh, run the official-style command below, replacing the login placeholder and paths with your own:

If SteamCMD reports an authentication or permission failure, correct that first; launching a partially installed directory will usually produce misleading executable or missing-file errors.
Windows installation
Open Command Prompt or PowerShell in the SteamCMD directory and use the Windows executable. The maintained Windows/Linux setup reference shows this form, including the optional validation pass:

If it fails, repeat the command with an account login accepted by SteamCMD. The validate argument asks SteamCMD to check the downloaded files and replace damaged or incomplete content; it can take longer than a normal update.
Equivalent Linux command with validation
steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/dayz/server +login anonymous +app_update 223350 validate +quitUse the account-login form from the official Linux procedure first, and treat anonymous authentication as an alternative that depends on the environment. Run the same update command whenever you deliberately install a newer server build.

Create and review serverDZ.cfg
The -config=serverDZ.cfg launch option tells DayZ which configuration file to read. Keep the file in the server directory or provide an explicit path. The official configuration reference is version-sensitive, so copy current key names and defaults from that reference instead of relying on an old example copied from a forum.
At minimum, review these categories before the first public launch:
- Identity: server name and any description shown to browsers.
- Access control: a server password if the instance is private and a separate, strong administrator password. Do not publish either credential in a batch file that other users can read.
- Gameplay: mission selection and the maximum player count appropriate for the machine.
- Query networking: the
steamQueryPortvalue used by server browsers and monitoring tools. - Persistence: the mission and profile locations where logs, character data and other state are written.
Do not assume that the configuration’s default game port matches an example command. One official launch example uses 2301, while the configuration reference’s default example uses 2302. The effective value is the one supplied to the launch command and accepted by the current configuration, so record it before creating firewall rules.
Open the game and query ports
Visibility depends on agreement between four places: the DayZ launch command, serverDZ.cfg, the host operating-system firewall and the router’s port-forwarding rule. A mismatch can leave the process running locally while the server remains invisible to outside players.
Choose and document the ports
The official Linux command uses -port=2301. Other official configuration examples use 2302, and a common community setup forwards UDP ports 2302-2305. These are examples, not a requirement to open every port on every machine. Adapt the rules to the exact game port and steamQueryPort values in your configuration.

Configure the host firewall and router
- Write down the game port from the launch command and the query port from
serverDZ.cfg. - Create inbound UDP rules on Windows Defender Firewall,
ufw,firewalldor your distribution’s equivalent for those values. - On the router, forward the same UDP ports to the server’s fixed private IP address. Reserve that address with a DHCP reservation or configure a static address so the rule does not silently point to another device.
- Restart the server and test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. Testing only from inside the same LAN can succeed because of local routing while outside players remain blocked.
Do not expose unrelated administration ports. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, you may need a public address or a hosting arrangement that permits inbound forwarding; changing DayZ settings cannot bypass that limitation.

Launch the dedicated server
Linux command
From the server directory, the official example uses:
cd ~/servers/dayz-server/
./DayZServer -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2301 -BEpath=battleye -profiles=profiles -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheckWindows command
Windows uses the 64-bit executable name and the same option families:
cd /d C:DayZServer
DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2301 -BEpath=battleye -profiles=profiles -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheckAdjust the port to your chosen value and use an explicit configuration path if the file is elsewhere.
What the launch switches do
-config=serverDZ.cfgselects the server configuration.-port=2301selects the game port in the example; it must agree with firewall and router rules.-BEpath=battleyepoints BattlEye to its files.-profiles=profilesplaces profile data and logs in the named directory rather than mixing them with the executable files.-dologsenables the regular RPT logging output.-adminlogenables administrator activity logging.-netlogenables network diagnostics.-freezecheckcreates a diagnostic dump if the server hangs beyond the documented threshold.
On first launch, watch the console and the files under the profiles directory. A clean process start is not proof of internet visibility: confirm that the expected port is listening, then test an external connection and inspect the RPT, administrator and network logs if players cannot join.
Install Workshop mods
Modded servers require more than downloading a Workshop item. The server must have the content in the expected directory, the launch command must load each mod in the intended order, and the mod’s signing keys must be available to BattlEye.

The official Linux example invokes SteamCMD with the DayZ client app ID and a Workshop item ID:

+workshop_download_item 221100 1559212036Replace 1559212036 with the ID of the item you intend to install. Run the command from the SteamCMD session or in the update script that manages your server files. Keep a record of the exact item IDs and versions so an update can be repeated consistently.
Expose the mod directory to the server
After downloading, link or copy the Workshop content into the DayZ server directory using the layout expected by the current official Linux instructions. The launch command lists mod directories with -mod, separated by semicolons. For example, a conceptual multi-mod argument has this form:
-mod=mod_folder_one;mod_folder_two;mod_folder_threeUse the actual folder names produced by your Workshop download and preserve the required load order. Do not substitute a display name for a directory name.

Copy or link every required .bikey file into the server’s keys directory. Clients that have a mismatched mod version, a missing key or a different load set can fail signature checks or be rejected during connection. When a modded player reports a key or signature error, compare the server’s Workshop content, -mod list and keys directory with the client’s installed versions.
Automate updates, restarts and backups
Manual launches are useful for the first test, but a public server needs a repeatable maintenance process. Bohemia’s Linux guidance demonstrates an update.sh script and a systemd service pattern for daemonized startup and restart workflows.
Build an update routine
- Stop the DayZ process cleanly before replacing files.
- Back up
serverDZ.cfg, the profiles directory and persistent mission data to storage outside the disposable install directory. - Run SteamCMD with
+app_update 223350; addvalidatewhen you need a file-integrity check. - Refresh Workshop items using their recorded IDs and verify that links, mod folders and
.bikeyfiles still exist. - Start the server with the same launch options and inspect the initial logs before announcing that maintenance is complete.
Schedule updates during a published maintenance window. A server restart can invalidate active sessions, and a game or mod update can make old client files incompatible.

Use a service manager on Linux
A systemd unit can start the server after boot, restart it after an unexpected exit and centralize service logs. Run the unit as the dedicated normal user, set its working directory to the server directory, and invoke your tested launch script rather than embedding credentials in the unit. Confirm file ownership and permissions before enabling automatic restarts; a service that repeatedly starts with an invalid configuration can create noisy logs without becoming usable.

Keep profiles and logs in a known location and back up configuration plus persistence data before major server updates. This separation lets you reinstall damaged binaries without discarding the world state or the evidence needed to diagnose BattlEye and network failures.

- Never run the server as root. The official Linux guide states: “Do not run the server as
root!” Use a dedicated unprivileged account and grant it access only to the directories it needs. - Use a separate administrator password and do not reuse a personal Steam password in scripts.
- Restrict firewall rules to the required DayZ and query ports; do not expose SSH, Remote Desktop or other administration services to the public internet without their own security controls.
- Keep BattlEye enabled and review its messages in the profiles and log directories.
- Back up before changing mission settings, adding several mods or applying a major server update.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The server starts but is not visible
- Confirm the process is still running and that the launch command contains the intended
-port. - Check that
steamQueryPortis set and that the query port is allowed through the host firewall. - Compare the router forward with the server’s current private IP address.
- Verify that the router and host rules use UDP and the same numbers as the command and configuration.
- Test from outside the LAN and check the network log for bind or packet errors.
SteamCMD cannot install or update
Check the SteamCMD path, destination permissions and free disk space. If account authentication fails, use the official account-login form rather than assuming anonymous access is supported. Run the command with validate after an interrupted download or suspected file corruption.
The executable or BattlEye files are missing
Confirm that +force_install_dir points to the directory you launch, that app ID 223350 was used, and that the update completed without errors. Check that -BEpath points to the directory containing the BattlEye files and that the service account can read it.
Players fail signature checks after a mod install
Compare every client and server mod version, verify the semicolon-separated -mod list and place all required .bikey files in the server’s keys directory. Remove stale or duplicate mod folders when two versions of the same item are being loaded.
The server stops or appears frozen
Inspect the RPT, administrator and network logs under -profiles. The -freezecheck option creates a dump when the server hangs beyond its documented threshold. Use that evidence to distinguish a configuration problem, a mod failure, a resource limit or a network issue before changing several variables at once.
Self-hosting versus managed DayZ hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control of serverDZ.cfg, Workshop files, BattlEye paths, update timing and backups, but you are responsible for the machine, public networking, firewall rules, monitoring and recovery. A managed service can handle provisioning, port configuration, updates, backups and uptime, but you trade away some control and add a recurring charge. Provider prices, player-slot limits and program terms vary; verify them directly before committing.
