The dependable RedM database stack is a MySQL-compatible server—MariaDB is the usual choice—connected through oxmysql. Create a database and least-privilege user, put the connection string in server.cfg, start oxmysql before your framework, and import every framework or script .sql file into that same database. If any one of those pieces points somewhere different, resources can start with missing tables or fail to connect.
This guide covers managed and self-hosted databases, exact configuration formats, VORP and RSG considerations, txAdmin deployment, legacy-wrapper compatibility, security, backups, and the errors that most often stop a RedM server during startup.
How the RedM database stack fits together
FXServer runs your RedM resources. Framework cores and gameplay resources use a database driver to persist characters, inventories, money, jobs, housing and other state. In a current setup, oxmysql is the driver layer between those resources and a MariaDB or MySQL-compatible server. The database server stores the data; oxmysql manages the connection pool and query interface; your resources supply the schema and queries.

The connection is not configured inside each script. It is normally exposed as the mysql_connection_string convar in server.cfg. Every resource that needs persistence must use the same intended database, and oxmysql must be ready before those resources initialize. A valid database service alone is therefore not enough: credentials, schema, driver version and resource order all have to agree.

Choose where the database will run
You can run MariaDB on the same machine as FXServer, on another machine you control, or through a managed game-server/database provider. The right choice depends on how much administration you want to perform and how much control you need over networking and backups.
For the FXServer side, Godlike.Host RedM servers offer a Pterodactyl-based game panel, SFTP/FTP access, and up to three free backups a day with restore; you still configure MariaDB and oxmysql as described here. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized RedM hosts (redm.net, 10 Oct 2026).

For a small private server, local MariaDB is often the simplest arrangement. A managed service can be preferable when you need off-host resilience or do not want database administration. In either case, keep the database reachable only from the FXServer or other explicitly trusted addresses.

- Host: usually
localhostwhen MariaDB is on the FXServer machine, or a private hostname/IP supplied by a provider. - Port: commonly
3306, unless the database administrator configured another port. - Database name: the schema container that will receive your framework tables, such as
redm. - Username: a database account created for this server rather than a shared administrator account.
- Password: a long, unique secret stored in protected configuration.
A typo in any one of these values can look like an oxmysql problem. Copy the provider’s values exactly, including a non-default port, and confirm the account is permitted to connect from the FXServer’s host.
Install and prepare MariaDB
Using a managed database
Use the provider’s control panel to create a database and an application user, then record its host, port, database name, username and password. Some services create the database and user together; others require separate steps. Check whether remote connections are restricted to an allowlist and add the FXServer’s public or private address as required. Do not assume that a username created for a local console can connect from another machine.
Self-hosting on the FXServer machine
Install a supported MariaDB release for your operating system, enable its service, and apply security updates. The VORP guidance specifically recommends MariaDB 10.11.2 and uses HeidiSQL for connection management and SQL imports. That recommendation is framework guidance, not a requirement for every RedM resource; confirm the version expected by the framework you actually deploy.

FLUSH PRIVILEGES;If FXServer and MariaDB are on different machines, the account host must permit the FXServer’s address, MariaDB must listen on the intended interface, and the firewall must allow the chosen port only from trusted sources. Avoid exposing port 3306 to the entire internet. A local-only account such as 'redm_user'@'localhost' will not work for a remote FXServer.
Install oxmysql in FXServer
- Download a current oxmysql release from its maintained project distribution.
- Extract the resource folder into the server’s
resourcesdirectory. Keep the resource folder name as expected by the release, normallyoxmysql. - Open
server.cfgand addensure oxmysqlnear the top, after your basic server settings and before framework or script resources. - Save the file and check the startup console for oxmysql initialization before enabling dependent resources.
Do not install oxmysql as a client-only resource or place it in a folder that FXServer does not scan. If the console says the resource cannot be found, verify the extracted directory has not gained an extra nesting level such as resources/oxmysql/oxmysql.
Put the connection string in server.cfg
Set mysql_connection_string before every ensure line that starts oxmysql, your framework core or a script that queries the database. oxmysql accepts a URI form and a semicolon-separated key/value form.
URI form
set mysql_connection_string "mysql://user:password@localhost:3306/redm?charset=utf8mb4"Replace the host, port, database, username and password with the values for your service. The charset=utf8mb4 parameter helps the database handle the full Unicode range used by player names and text fields.

Key/value form
set mysql_connection_string "user=root;password=12345;host=localhost;port=3306;database=redm"The second example mirrors the format documented by oxmysql, but an administrator account and a short password are poor production choices. Use the dedicated account you created and a long secret instead.
Special characters in credentials
Characters such as @, :, /, ?, #, semicolons and spaces have structural meaning in connection strings. A password containing them can be parsed incorrectly, producing an access-denied or malformed-URI error. Either use a connection-string format that safely represents the characters or encode them according to the format’s rules. Test the resulting value in a protected environment; never paste a live password into a public issue or screenshot.
Recommended resource order

# then framework modules and gameplay resourcesKeep the convar above the first ensure. Start oxmysql first, the framework core second, framework modules next, and gameplay scripts last. A script can still need an explicit dependency declaration, but a clean order in server.cfg prevents many boot-time races.
Import framework and script schemas
Installing a driver does not create character, inventory or job tables. Each framework or resource normally ships one or more .sql files. Import them into the database named at the end of your connection string, not merely into whichever database your SQL client selected last.

- Stop the server or disable the resources whose tables you are about to create.
- Connect to MariaDB with HeidiSQL, the provider’s SQL console, or another trusted client.
- Select the intended
redmdatabase and confirm its name in the client window. - Open the framework’s supplied SQL file, such as VORP’s
MariaDB.sql, and execute it. - Import each additional script migration into the same database, following the maintainer’s order when files are numbered.
- Refresh the table list and check that the expected tables exist before starting dependent resources.
Importing into the wrong database is one of the most common causes of “table does not exist” errors. The server may connect successfully while still failing every query because the schema was created elsewhere. Treat each framework’s SQL as versioned application code: keep a copy with your server files and apply migrations when you update the framework.

Use txAdmin without losing control of the database
txAdmin is included with FXServer; it is not a separate resource that you download and ensure. Its recipes can create a server configuration, connect to a database and execute SQL as part of deployment. This is convenient for a new server, especially when an RSG recipe handles initial database setup.
Review a recipe before running it. Confirm the source URL, credentials, permissions requested by the recipe and every SQL statement it will execute. Back up existing server data and the database before applying a recipe to an established installation. If a deployment fails, inspect the first failed task and its error output; repeatedly redeploying can hide the original cause or apply only part of a migration.

Verify the connection before enabling every script
- Start FXServer with only oxmysql and the framework core enabled.
- Watch the console for a successful database initialization and for authentication, DNS, timeout or SQL errors.
- Confirm the expected framework tables are visible in the selected database.
- Start one dependent module at a time. This identifies the first resource that requests a missing table or incompatible API.
- Connect a test character and perform a save-and-restart check. Data that survives a restart demonstrates that the resource is writing to the intended database rather than merely holding state in memory.
Do not treat an empty error screen as proof that the database works. A server can reach MariaDB while a particular resource still has a missing migration, wrong table prefix or legacy-wrapper dependency.
Troubleshoot the common failures

Protect credentials and data
- Keep the database password and server keys in protected configuration or provider settings. txAdmin documentation specifically warns against exposing database passwords in public files.
- Do not publish a complete
server.cfgcontaining live secrets. Redact the password before sharing logs or support requests. - Use a dedicated database account with access to the RedM database rather than a global administrative account.
- Restrict remote database access by firewall and account host. A database that is reachable from the whole internet is an unnecessary attack surface.
- Back up the database and server data before importing a new schema, changing recipes or applying framework migrations.
- Test a restore on a separate database or machine. A backup that has never been restored is not a recovery plan.
- Record the framework, resource and MariaDB versions alongside each backup so you can reproduce the matching schema after a failure.
Self-hosted versus managed: a practical decision
Choose self-hosting when FXServer and MariaDB can run on the same trusted machine, you are comfortable applying updates and you want direct control over firewall and backup policy. Choose a managed service when you need the database separated from the game host, want provider-operated infrastructure or require an easier path to off-host snapshots. In both cases, the application work is the same: create the right account, configure oxmysql, import the matching schemas and monitor startup logs.
Do not select a service on an advertised performance claim alone. The available guidance does not establish a RedM-specific latency or throughput benchmark, and real results depend on region, network path, query workload, indexes and resource quality. Measure your own save and login behavior after the schema is installed, and keep a tested backup regardless of hosting model.
