Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
To set up a Dante SOCKS5 proxy on a Linux VPS, install the distribution’s dante-server package, bind Dante to the intended listening and outbound interfaces, restrict client source addresses, require username authentication, open the port only in the provider and host firewalls, validate the configuration with danted -V, and test from an allowed laptop. The critical security rule is to define both layers of policy: client rules decide who may connect, while socks rules decide which destinations, commands, and protocols an admitted client may use.
What Dante does and why the two rule sets matter
Dante is a SOCKS proxy daemon for Linux. It can relay TCP and UDP traffic and can sit between networks as a firewall-like control point. A client connects to Dante on the VPS, Dante evaluates the client’s source address and authentication, and an approved request is then made from the VPS’s external interface.
Access is evaluated in two stages:
- Client rules: ordered
client passandclient blockrules admit or reject the connecting source. - SOCKS rules: ordered
socks passandsocks blockrules authorize the requested destination, command, and protocol.
This separation is useful when a firewall rule is accidentally too broad. The Dante client policy remains a second gate. Conversely, allowing a source in a client pass rule does not automatically permit every kind of proxy request; the SOCKS policy must also allow it.
Plan the VPS before installing Dante
Choose interfaces and an address policy
Use a supported Debian- or Ubuntu-family VPS with a public address and a known private or listening address. The listening address is the interface and IP on which Dante accepts proxy connections. The external address is the interface or IP Dante uses for outbound connections. On a single-interface VPS these may map to the same network device, but they are still separate configuration decisions.

Record the following before editing the configuration:
- The VPS public egress IP that should appear to websites and other destinations.
- The local IP address on which Dante should listen.
- The TCP listening port, such as 1080, if that port is available.
- Every trusted client IP or CIDR range that needs access.
- Whether the workload needs TCP only or both TCP and UDP.
Use fixed client IP addresses in rules whenever practical. IP-based rules are recommended by Dante’s documentation for security and performance. If a laptop receives a changing residential address, use the narrowest managed range you can and update it when it changes rather than exposing the proxy to the whole Internet.

Keep administration separate from proxy access
SSH administration and SOCKS credentials serve different purposes. Keep SSH restricted to its own source addresses and accounts. Do not use the VPS root password as the SOCKS password, and do not give the proxy account administrative privileges.
Install the Dante server package
Update the operating system
Log in over your restricted SSH path and apply the normal package updates for the distribution. Reboot only if the operating system requires it, and confirm that your SSH access returns before proceeding.
Install dante-server
Install the package named dante-server using the distribution’s package manager. Package names, service-unit names, and configuration-file locations vary between Debian-family releases. After installation, inspect the unit definition and the installed manual to find the exact configuration path used by your package. Do not assume that a path copied from another release is correct.
The daemon is normally managed through the distribution service manager. The package may create a service identity automatically; if it does not, create one before starting the service.

- Use a system account that cannot log in interactively unless the distribution requires otherwise.
- Grant it only the file and device permissions needed by the package.
- Store configuration and log files with ownership and modes that prevent ordinary users from editing policy.
- Use a separate, dedicated proxy login for each person or automation identity when accountability matters.
Some packages expose privilege-related settings in their sample configuration or manual. Follow the installed version’s documented account names and directives rather than copying an account directive from an unrelated release.
Build the configuration in layers
Begin with global settings, then add the ordered client rules, then the ordered SOCKS rules. The following is an illustrative structure, not a drop-in file: replace the angle-bracket values, confirm the accepted keywords in the installed danted.conf(5) manual, and adapt interface syntax to your package version.

Dante’s documented default for socksmethod is no methods, which means SOCKS requests are blocked. Set the method intentionally; do not infer a permissive default from a successful daemon start.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOrder client rules from narrow to broad
Put explicit trusted-source rules first and a catch-all block last. In the example, only the specified /32 client can pass; every other source reaches the final block. For multiple trusted networks, add one client pass rule per range before the catch-all block. A source that is blocked here never reaches SOCKS authorization.
Use IP addresses rather than host names in these rules when possible. Name lookups introduce operational dependency and can produce a broader or different result than intended if DNS changes.
Authorize only the SOCKS operations you need
A socks pass rule can constrain source, destination, command, and protocol. The sample allows TCP connect requests from the trusted client. If the workload requires UDP, add a separately reviewed rule for the required UDP command and protocol syntax in your installed manual. Do not enable UDP merely because Dante supports it; broader protocol scope increases what a compromised credential can do.
Keep a final socks block rule. It makes the policy explicit and prevents an unanticipated request from being accepted if an earlier rule is changed later.

Add dedicated SOCKS5 credentials
Create a proxy user
For Dante’s username method, create a dedicated system user with a long, random password. The username method checks the system password file, so the account must exist in the VPS’s local account database. Follow the operating system’s account-management tools and disable interactive shell access when appropriate.
Use a unique password that is not used for SSH, cloud-provider access, databases, or any other service. If several people use the proxy, separate accounts make revocation and log review safer than sharing one credential.
Select SOCKS5 in every client
SOCKS4 has no username/password authentication capability. A client that must send Dante credentials must be configured explicitly for SOCKS5. Selecting SOCKS4 can produce an authentication failure even when the username and password are correct.
Authentication is not a substitute for source restrictions. A leaked password combined with an unrestricted client pass rule can still turn the VPS into an Internet-facing relay, so use both an allowlist and credentials.
Restrict the provider and host firewalls
Apply the same source-IP policy at both network layers:
- In the VPS provider’s network firewall, allow the Dante listening port only from the trusted client IP ranges.
- In the VPS host firewall, repeat that allowlist for the listening port and protocol.
- Keep SSH on its own rule and source range; do not combine administrative and proxy exposure.
- Allow outbound traffic only as required by your organization’s policy.
The Dante client pass rule should repeat the source restriction. This protects you if a provider firewall rule is accidentally widened, removed, or applied to the wrong instance. Check the listening address as well: a service bound to a private address cannot be reached through a public interface, while a service bound to every address may expose more interfaces than intended.
Validate the file before starting or restarting
Run Dante’s verification mode
Use the daemon’s configuration verification mode before a restart:

danted -V
If your configuration is not in the package’s default location, provide the appropriate file option, documented as -f by the daemon manual:
danted -V -f /path/to/your/danted.conf
Fix every parse error before restarting the service. The verification step catches spelling, brace, and syntax problems without taking down a working instance. Because directive names and address forms are version-sensitive, resolve errors against the manual installed with your package rather than a configuration from a different distribution.
Start the service and confirm the listener
Start or restart the distribution’s Dante service only after validation. Check the service status and confirm that the process is listening on the expected IP and port. If it is listening on the wrong address, stop and correct internal before opening more firewall rules.
Use local socket and service-manager diagnostics to distinguish a daemon failure from a network path failure. A service that is not listening cannot be fixed by changing a client application; a listening service that is unreachable usually points to the provider firewall, host firewall, address binding, or routing.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Test from a laptop with a SOCKS5-aware client
Test the permitted path
From an IP included in the Dante client allowlist, configure a SOCKS5 client with the VPS address, listening port, proxy username, and proxy password. A command-line HTTP client can make a direct test; use its SOCKS5 option and credentials, and prefer remote DNS resolution when the client supports it so host lookups also traverse the proxy.
curl --socks5-hostname <vps-address>:1080
--proxy-user '<proxy-user>:<proxy-password>'
https://example.com/
Replace the placeholders with your values and protect shell history when entering passwords. The response should arrive through the proxy, and a service that reports the requester’s address should show the VPS public egress address rather than the laptop’s address.
Test each denial deliberately
- From a source IP not listed in
client pass, confirm that the connection is rejected. - From an allowed source, request a command or protocol omitted from
socks pass, such as UDP when only TCP is allowed, and confirm that it is denied. - Use an incorrect username or password and confirm that authentication fails.
These negative tests prove that the block rules are active rather than merely present in the file. Perform them from a controlled second network or test address so you do not lock yourself out of administration.

Enable logs and timeout controls
Operational data is essential when a proxy is exposed beyond localhost. Configure logging to syslog or a dedicated file, using the destinations and event selectors supported by your installed Dante version. Include connection, disconnect, error, and I/O events as appropriate for your retention and privacy requirements.
Set connection and negotiation timeouts so a client that opens a session and then stalls cannot consume resources indefinitely. Choose values suitable for the application; very short values can break high-latency links, while very long values leave more abandoned sessions alive. Dante documents logging destinations, event categories, and timeout directives, but exact spelling follows the installed version’s manual.
Review logs after each policy change. A client-rule denial indicates that the source failed the first gate. A SOCKS-rule denial means the source was admitted but the destination, command, protocol, or authentication did not satisfy the second gate. Keeping those cases distinct makes troubleshooting much faster.
Common failures and precise fixes
The laptop cannot open the proxy port
- Check that the Dante service is running and listening on the configured
internaladdress and port. - Check the provider firewall for the exact source IP currently used by the laptop.
- Check the host firewall and confirm that the rule applies to the correct interface and protocol.
- Verify that the client is connecting to the VPS address, not an old DNS record or private address.
- Read the logs to determine whether Dante saw and blocked the connection; no log entry often indicates that traffic never reached the daemon.
Authentication fails
- Select SOCKS5, not SOCKS4.
- Confirm that the proxy username exists as a system account and that its password is current.
- Confirm that
socksmethodincludesusernamein the active configuration. - Check for shell quoting errors, hidden spaces, or a password manager sending an outdated value.
- Review the authentication-related log event without recording passwords in logs or support tickets.
The connection is accepted but the destination fails
- Verify that the
externaladdress is valid on the VPS and has the expected route. - Inspect the ordered
socks passandsocks blockrules for destination, command, and protocol restrictions. - Check whether the client is attempting UDP while the policy permits only TCP.
- Review connect and negotiation timeout values for stalled or high-latency destinations.
- Test a known reachable destination before troubleshooting an application-specific endpoint.
A configuration change prevents startup
Restore the last known-good file, run danted -V with the correct -f option, and compare the failing directive with the installed manual. Common causes are a misspelled keyword, an unmatched brace, an invalid address form, or a directive copied from another Dante version. Keep a dated backup of each working policy so a syntax mistake does not become an extended outage.
Choose the narrowest deployment that meets the workload
| Decision | Narrower option | Broader option | When to choose the broader option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protocol version | SOCKS4 without authentication | SOCKS5 with username/password authentication | Use SOCKS5 whenever credentials are required; SOCKS4 cannot carry them. |
| Source control | IP allowlist | Username authentication plus an allowlist | Add credentials when identity or password-based access is needed, but retain the IP gate for an Internet-facing VPS. |
| Traffic scope | TCP-only connect |
TCP plus explicitly authorized UDP | Enable UDP only for applications that require it and after reviewing the command and protocol rules. |
| Client exposure | One trusted client address | Several named trusted ranges | Add multiple ranges when separate offices, devices, or automation networks need access; keep a final catch-all block. |
The broader choice is not automatically better. Every additional source range, protocol, command, or destination increases the policy surface that must be monitored and revoked when circumstances change.
Production checklist
- Use a supported Debian- or Ubuntu-family VPS and keep packages updated.
- Record the listening IP, egress IP, port, and trusted client CIDRs before editing.
- Run Dante under a least-privilege service identity.
- Set
internalandexternaldeliberately; do not rely on an accidental interface choice. - Place narrow
client passrules before a catch-allclient block. - Require SOCKS5 username authentication when clients need credentials.
- Place narrow
socks passrules before a catch-allsocks block. - Open the port only to trusted sources in both the provider and host firewalls.
- Run
danted -Vbefore every restart and use-fwhen a non-default file is active. - Test one permitted request and several denied cases from controlled clients.
- Enable useful connection and error logging, protect log files, and set suitable timeouts.
- Review access regularly and remove stale client addresses and proxy accounts.
What a secure finished setup looks like
A secure deployment is not simply a daemon listening on port 1080. It is a chain of controls: a restricted network path, a listening address chosen for the intended interface, a source-IP gate in Dante, SOCKS5 username authentication, destination and protocol rules limited to the workload, and logging that lets you distinguish blocked clients from blocked requests. Validate the chain from both sides—an allowed client must work, and an unallowed client or operation must fail—before treating the VPS as ready for regular use.
