To run a Crucial 2 server, use the official Crucial2-1.5-server-hotfix.zip pack with Minecraft 1.16.5 and Forge. Install the Java release recommended for that Minecraft version, extract the server files, complete the first-run EULA and world configuration, then launch the Forge server. Every player must install the matching Crucial 2 client profile on Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge. You can run the files on your own computer or investigate CurseForge’s managed-server route.
The important rule is version matching: the server pack, client profile, Minecraft version, and mod loader must describe the same Crucial 2 release. A newer Minecraft installation or an otherwise similar Forge profile will not substitute for the required 1.16.5 setup.

Crucial 2 – The Refresh Update is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. Its official project files identify Crucial2-1.5.zip as the regular release and Crucial2-1.5-server-hotfix.zip as the server pack labeled for Minecraft 1.16. The project owner, Vazkii, describes it as a vanilla-styled pack whose mods are tuned to work together. The CurseForge project page reported 719,595 downloads in 2026.
A multiplayer installation has two separate parts:
- Server: the hotfix ZIP extracted into a dedicated server directory and started with its included Forge/server launch files.
- Client: a Crucial 2 profile installed for each player, using the same pack release, Minecraft 1.16.5, and Forge loader.
Do not place the server ZIP in a normal client mods folder, and do not ask players to use a different Crucial 2 release merely because its name looks similar. The server and all clients need compatible mod files and configuration.

Requirements checklist
- A computer or hosted instance that can keep a Java Minecraft server running.
- The official
Crucial2-1.5-server-hotfix.zipfile. - A Java installation or launcher selection appropriate for Minecraft 1.16.5. Java is required for modpacks, but the official pages cited for this release do not publish one Crucial 2-specific Java major number.
- Enough storage for the extracted server, generated world, logs, backups, and future updates.
- Permission to create files, run Java, and configure local firewall or router rules if friends will connect from outside your home network.
- A matching Crucial 2 client profile for every player.
There is no authoritative Crucial 2-specific RAM minimum, player cap, fixed hosting price, or universal start command in the published project information. Treat memory, CPU, network, and command-line settings as properties of your operating system, launcher, and hosting environment rather than as guaranteed pack specifications.
Confirm the exact build before downloading

Keep the ZIP filenames unchanged until you have verified their contents. If a launcher offers several Minecraft versions, select 1.16.5 explicitly instead of accepting a current-version default.
Download the official server pack
- Open the Crucial 2 project’s Files page on CurseForge.
- Select the file named
Crucial2-1.5-server-hotfix.zip. Choose the item explicitly marked as the Minecraft 1.16 server pack, not the regular client ZIP. - Save the archive somewhere you can identify later, such as a downloads directory. Do not extract it into an existing vanilla world or an unrelated modpack folder.
- Create a new directory dedicated to this server. A path such as
Crucial2-Serveris easier to back up and troubleshoot than a mixed directory containing several packs. - Copy or move the downloaded ZIP into that directory and extract it there.
After extraction, look for the Forge/server launch files and any included instructions. The exact filenames and scripts can vary by operating system and by server-pack revision. Use the launch method shipped with the archive instead of inventing a command from a different Forge version.
Install and select the right Java runtime
CurseForge support states that Java is required to run Minecraft modpacks and recommends using the Java release suggested for the specific game version. Because the cited Crucial 2 pages do not state a single Java-major requirement, let your launcher or server environment make that selection for 1.16.5 rather than assuming that the newest Java release is correct.

Check what is currently available
- Open a terminal or command prompt.
- Run
java -version. - Record the reported version and the path, if shown. If the command is not found, install a supported Java runtime through your operating system or select one in the launcher.
For a self-hosted server, make sure the account that will run the server can see the intended Java executable. Multiple Java installations are common; a launcher may use its own bundled runtime while a terminal uses the system default. If the server log reports an unsupported class version, a missing runtime, or a Forge launch failure, check which executable the launch script actually calls and select the release recommended for Minecraft 1.16.5.
Extract and start the Forge server
First launch
- Open the dedicated directory where you extracted the hotfix archive.
- Read the included server or Forge instructions before launching. They identify the supplied script or launcher file for your operating system.
- Start the server with that supplied file. The first run normally creates configuration files, a world directory, logs, and an EULA file; allow it to finish rather than closing the process immediately.
- Stop the process cleanly using the server console’s stop action once the initial files have been written.
The official material confirms the server-pack artifact and Java-based Forge workflow but does not publish one universal command, memory value, or operating-system-specific script. A Windows batch file, macOS or Linux shell script, and a managed host control panel may all expose different launch controls. Follow the file included in your extraction and keep a copy of any original script before editing it.

- Open the generated EULA file in a plain-text editor.
- Read the Minecraft EULA and change the acceptance setting only if you agree to its terms.
- Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Start the supplied Forge/server launcher again and watch the console for a completed startup message.
If the server immediately stops and reports that the EULA has not been accepted, verify that you edited the EULA file in the active server directory, not a second extracted copy. If it reports a Java or Forge error instead, resolve that runtime or loader problem before changing world settings.
Configure the first world and server settings
Once the EULA step is complete, the server creates its normal configuration files. Stop it before making broad edits, then restart it so each change can be tested in isolation.

Settings worth checking
- World identity: choose a world name and keep it consistent with your backup plan. Changing the name later can make it appear that the original world is missing.
- Game mode and difficulty: set the values your group wants before inviting players.
- Player permissions: grant operator access only to trusted administrators through the server console.
- Whitelist: enable and populate one if the server should be private.
- Message of the day: use it to display the pack release and connection instructions to players.
- Listening address and port: leave environment-dependent values at their intended defaults unless you know why a change is necessary. Record the actual values used by your server and firewall.
Do not copy a server.properties file from an unrelated Minecraft version or modpack. Differences in options can create confusing behavior, and a setting copied from a tutorial may not exist in this server build.
Make the server reachable
Players on the same home network
Start the server and identify the host computer’s local network address. Other players on the same network should connect using that address and the listening port shown in the server configuration or console. If the connection fails, check that the host firewall allows Java or the server process on the selected network profile.

Players connecting over the internet
Internet access normally involves three separate controls: the server’s listening setting, the host computer’s firewall, and the home router’s forwarding rule. Configure all three for the same port and protocol, then test from a network outside the host’s Wi-Fi. Do not publish your private local address. The exact port-forwarding recipe depends on the router, internet provider, and whether the host is behind carrier-grade NAT, so there is no single Crucial 2 instruction that works for every household.
Only share the public address with people who should join. Keep the whitelist enabled for a private group, and remove access promptly when a player should no longer connect.

Install the matching Crucial 2 client
Each player needs a client profile that matches the server’s pack release. The regular Crucial2-1.5.zip is the project’s main release file; the server hotfix is not a replacement for the client installation.
- In a launcher that supports CurseForge packs, choose the option to install or import a modpack.
- Select the Crucial 2 1.5 release or import the downloaded
Crucial2-1.5.zipwhen the launcher requests a pack file. - Confirm that the profile uses Minecraft 1.16.5 and Forge.
- Let the launcher finish downloading the mods and dependencies before starting the game.
- Launch the profile once in single-player so it can create its client configuration, then close it.
- Repeat the process for every player. Do not copy one player’s entire game directory over another person’s installation unless you understand which saves and settings will be overwritten.
When the client reports a missing mod, a mismatched version, or a rejected connection, compare the installed profile’s pack and loader versions with the server files. Removing a mod from the client to make it load can create a different incompatibility; restore the official profile instead.
Connect for the first time
- Start the server and wait until Forge has finished loading the world.
- Open the matching Crucial 2 profile on a client computer.
- Choose multiplayer and add the server address supplied by the host.
- Use the recorded listening port when the address is not using the expected default.
- Connect one player first. Check that the world loads, blocks and items render correctly, and the server console shows no repeating errors.
- Invite the remaining players only after the first connection succeeds.
The first world generation can take longer than later joins. Avoid repeatedly killing the server process during that period; an interrupted save can damage the world. Use the server’s normal stop command when maintenance is required.

Choose self-hosting when you want maximum control and can maintain the machine. Choose managed hosting when avoiding router and operating-system administration is worth an ongoing fee, provided the host confirms support for this specific pack.

Back up before every change
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the world directory, server configuration, and any custom scripts to storage outside the live server folder.
- Label the backup with the date and pack version.
- Keep at least one copy on another device or location.
- Periodically restore a copy to a separate test directory so you know the backup is usable.
Never overwrite your only world backup while testing an update. Keep the original server pack ZIP and launch files with the corresponding backup so you can reconstruct the environment.
Apply pack changes cautiously
Before changing Crucial 2 versions, read the project’s release notes and confirm that a compatible server pack exists. Back up first, stop the server, and test the new files with a copy of the world. Have every player update to the same client release before allowing them back onto the upgraded world. Rolling back after a world has been opened and saved by a newer pack can be unsafe, so retain the old installation until the new one is proven stable.
Troubleshooting common failures

A practical launch checklist
- Server folder contains the extracted files from
Crucial2-1.5-server-hotfix.zip. - Server and clients all target Minecraft 1.16.5 with Forge.
- Java is installed and is the release recommended for that game version.
- The EULA setting is completed in the active server directory.
- World, whitelist, operator, firewall, and listening settings have been checked.
- A clean backup exists before inviting players or changing versions.
- One test client has connected successfully before the whole group joins.
With those checks complete, the Crucial 2 server is running the intended Forge build rather than a similarly named but incompatible installation. The remaining work is ordinary server administration: protect the world with backups, keep every client on the same pack release, and verify hosting or network changes in your own environment.
