Splinter Cell: Double Agent does not have a documented native gamepad layout on PC. The 2006 PC manual lists only a mouse and keyboard as supported peripherals. If you have the Steam version, the practical option is an input-mapping workaround such as x360ce: a 2015 Steam Community guide places the mapper files in SCDA-OfflineSystem, then assigns controller inputs before launching the game. Reports are mixed, so treat this as an experiment rather than guaranteed plug-and-play support.
Start by making sure Windows sees the controller, then configure one mapping layer, test every axis and button, and keep a keyboard-and-mouse fallback. The steps below distinguish manual-documented controls from community-reported workarounds so you know which parts are reliable and which may need troubleshooting.
What controller support actually exists
The clearest answer comes from the PC manual rather than from a controller menu in the game. In its “Solo Controls” section, the Ubisoft/Prima Games manual (2006) lists keyboard movement on W, A, S and D, action/confirm on E, and camera movement through the mouse. Its hardware line reads: “Peripherals Supported: Mouse, keyboard.” No gamepad control map is provided.
Recommended Free Tools
That means you should not expect the PC edition to detect an Xbox-style pad and expose a complete in-game layout automatically. A controller can still be made usable by translating its inputs into the keyboard and mouse signals the game already understands, but that translation is supplied by external software.

Windows-version context
The manual is a historical document and names Windows XP. Steam’s current support page says Double Agent can be played on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but that statement concerns operating-system compatibility; it does not certify native gamepad support or every controller and mapper combination. A modern Windows installation can therefore run the game while still requiring an input workaround.
What the community workaround proves—and what it does not
A Steam Community discussion opened on April 4, 2015 describes using an Xbox 360 controller with x360ce in the Steam release. The author instructs users to put the utility files in the game’s SCDA-OfflineSystem directory, configure the controller in x360ce, and then start the game. Other participants report success, but another reports that the right analog stick sometimes behaves like the right trigger. The discussion also warns that old files and links may need replacement.
This describes one reported workable route, not an official support statement. It does not establish a universal procedure for retail copies, every Steam installation, current Windows builds, wireless pads, or a particular controller model.

- Identify the edition. The cited x360ce instructions are for the Steam version. Note where Steam has installed the game and confirm that the folder contains
SCDA-Offlineand itsSystemsubfolder. - Connect the controller directly. For the first test, use a wired connection if possible. Wireless is acceptable once the wired or already-paired device is known to work. Avoid testing through an unpowered hub while diagnosing.
- Confirm Windows recognition. On Windows 10 or 11, open the system’s Bluetooth and devices area and verify that the pad appears as connected. You can also press Win+R, enter
joy.cpl, and inspect the controller in the Windows Game Controllers panel. Move both sticks, press every face and shoulder button, and pull both triggers. If an axis does not respond here, a game mapper cannot repair the connection. - Close competing remappers. Steam’s controller configuration, manufacturer utilities, accessibility tools, and other virtual-controller programs can all intercept the same inputs. Use one translation method at a time during setup.
- Back up the game folder. Copy the original
SCDA-OfflineSystemdirectory somewhere outside the game installation. If a mapper causes a launch failure or incorrect input, you can restore the original files instead of guessing which file changed.
Community-reported x360ce setup for the Steam version
The following sequence follows the 2015 Steam Community instructions while keeping their limitations explicit. The April 4, 2015 discussion provides no current download source or a guaranteed x360ce build, so obtain the mapper only from a source you trust and do not treat an old link in that thread as an endorsement.
- Locate the game directory. In Steam, open the game’s local files command and navigate to the installation folder. Open
SCDA-Offline, then openSystem. Do not place files in a similarly named parent folder or in a general Steam directory. - Place the mapper files in the game’s System folder. The community guide specifically names
SCDA-OfflineSystem. Keep a backup of the untouched folder before copying anything. Do not overwrite unrelated files outside that directory. - Run the mapper’s configuration utility. With the controller connected, let x360ce detect it if detection is offered. Choose an Xbox 360-style profile only if the utility shows one for your actual device; otherwise assign controls manually. The goal is to produce the keyboard, mouse, or virtual-XInput signals that Double Agent can consume.
- Assign movement first. Bind the left stick to the game’s movement directions represented by W, A, S and D. Test neutral, full-forward, full-back, and both lateral directions. If your mapper offers dead-zone or sensitivity controls, make sure the character does not drift when the stick is untouched.
- Assign camera control deliberately. The manual assigns the camera to the mouse, so the right stick must be translated into mouse movement or whatever camera signal the mapper exposes. Check horizontal and vertical axes separately. A reversed vertical axis or an axis that only works as a button indicates an incorrect assignment, not a gameplay setting.
- Bind the primary action. Map a convenient face button to E, the documented action/confirm key. Add the remaining actions one at a time, using the keyboard bindings shown in the manual as the reference. Do not assume that a generic Xbox layout matches Double Agent’s PC actions.
- Save the profile and launch the game. Close the configuration utility if it has a separate save command, then start Double Agent from Steam. Test in a low-risk area before beginning a mission. Keep the keyboard connected so you can recover if a binding prevents menu navigation.
The folder placement and general sequence come from the April 4, 2015 community discussion; the exact names of mapper files, profile formats, and current utility releases can change. If a newer x360ce release uses a different workflow, follow that release’s own documentation while preserving the essential principle: one mapper, the correct game directory, and a complete axis-by-axis test.
Build a usable layout instead of copying a generic Xbox profile
Double Agent’s manual documents a small set of core inputs, while a modern controller exposes more controls than the game necessarily needs. Map by function and verify the signal that reaches the game.
| Controller control | Target in the PC game | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Left stick | W, A, S and D movement | All four directions work; releasing the stick stops movement. |
| Right stick horizontal axis | Mouse-equivalent camera movement | Left/right camera movement is smooth and is not reported as a trigger or button. |
| Right stick vertical axis | Mouse-equivalent camera movement | Up/down movement is present and the direction is acceptable. |
| Face button | E action/confirm | Doors, interactions and menu confirmation respond consistently. |
| Other buttons and shoulders | Other keyboard actions, as needed | Each assignment is unique and does not steal a camera axis or movement key. |
| Triggers | Only if an action benefits from an analog or digital trigger | Both triggers register independently; neither is mistaken for the right-stick axis. |
| D-pad | Optional menu or auxiliary keyboard commands | Directional presses do not generate repeated or stuck commands. |
The manual does not provide an official gamepad layout, so there is no authoritative “correct” placement for every button. Prioritize reliable movement, camera control and the E action, then add secondary commands only after those three work. A smaller layout that never loses an axis is better than a complete-looking profile with a broken camera.

Test every input before relying on the controller
Use a repeatable test rather than judging the setup by whether the game reaches its title screen.
- At the first controllable area, release both sticks and confirm that the character and camera remain still.
- Walk forward, backward, left and right separately. Diagonal input should not cancel one of the two directions.
- Rotate the camera in both directions, then look up and down. Test slow and fast movement if the mapper exposes sensitivity.
- Press the mapped action button on a harmless object and in a menu. Confirm that a held button does not repeat unexpectedly.
- Press each shoulder button, face button, D-pad direction and trigger once. Record any control that does nothing, performs two actions, or moves the camera.
- Pause, navigate a menu, return to play, and load a save only after the previous checks pass. Keep the keyboard available until a complete mission has been tested.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Windows does not see the controller
Reconnect it directly, re-pair a wireless device, and check it in joy.cpl. If buttons or axes fail in the Windows panel, fix the connection, driver, battery or hardware issue first. Double Agent cannot receive an input that Windows does not expose.
The game launches, but no controller input works
Confirm that the mapper files are in the exact Steam game path, SCDA-OfflineSystem, and that the configuration was saved before launching. Close other remappers and restart the game after changing the profile. If the utility is configured for a different device or profile, select the connected controller and map it again.
The character moves, but the camera does not
The manual assigns camera movement to the mouse, so a left-stick-only profile is incomplete. Return to the mapper and configure the right stick as the camera’s mouse-equivalent axes. Test horizontal and vertical movement independently, then check for an inverted axis or an excessive dead zone.

The right stick acts like the right trigger
This exact conflict is reported in the April 4, 2015 Steam discussion. Reopen the axis assignments and remove any duplicate binding that names the right trigger. Confirm that the right-stick X and Y axes are assigned to camera movement and that the trigger is assigned separately. Save, relaunch, and retest; if the conflict returns, try a different mapping profile or a manual assignment rather than adding a second remapper.
A trigger is treated as an axis, button or nothing
Controllers expose triggers differently. In the mapper’s test view, determine whether each trigger produces an independent axis or a button event, then bind it to a command that matches that signal. Do not force an analog binding onto a trigger that the utility reports only as digital.
Inputs are duplicated or menus scroll repeatedly
Look for the same physical control assigned in both the mapper and another active layer. Disable the extra layer, clear duplicate bindings, and test with one profile. A stuck or over-sensitive D-pad can also create repeated menu commands; verify it in Windows before changing game bindings.
The game stops launching after files are copied
Exit Steam, restore the backed-up SCDA-OfflineSystem folder, and verify that the unmodified game launches. Then add only the mapper files required by the version you are using. If the clean installation works but the mapped one does not, the problem is the selected mapper build, file placement or configuration rather than the controller itself.

Wireless works intermittently
Repeat the test with a wired connection. If wired input is stable and wireless input is not, re-pair the device, replace or charge its batteries, and keep the wired connection for play. No particular wireless model is documented as reliable with Double Agent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Wired versus wireless: what to check before buying
No best controller model is documented for this game. Choose based on whether the device passes the checks below, not on a claim of native Double Agent support.
| Check | Wired controller | Wireless controller |
|---|---|---|
| Initial diagnosis | Usually the simplest first test because the cable supplies power and the data path. | Requires pairing and a stable battery or receiver connection. |
| Windows recognition | Must appear in Windows’ controller panel when connected. | Must remain paired and appear as connected before the mapper starts. |
| Mapper compatibility | Confirm the utility can read both sticks, triggers, D-pad and buttons. | Confirm the same controls remain visible after pairing; test for dropouts. |
| Evidence specific to Double Agent | Not stated for any particular model. | Not stated for any particular model. |
| Best use during setup | Preferred diagnostic baseline. | Use after the wired or already-stable connection passes testing. |
A PC-compatible Xbox 360-style pad is a plausible choice for trying the community method, but compatibility with a specific current product has not been verified. Check the seller’s Windows support information and return policy, and test the analog sticks and triggers immediately.
Keep the setup reversible
- Store the original
SCDA-OfflineSystemfolder before copying mapper files. - Save a named controller profile so you can restore a known-good layout after experimenting.
- Change one binding or one remapping layer at a time; otherwise you cannot identify the cause of a new conflict.
- Do not download replacement files from an old community link without checking what they are and whether they match your Windows and game installation.
- Keep keyboard controls available. They are the only input method explicitly documented by the PC manual.
What not to infer from other controller guides
A separate Steam discussion covers controller remapping for the first Splinter Cell game and mentions Steam Input and mouse-axis problems. That conversation can illustrate why axis setup deserves testing, but it is not a Double Agent procedure. Do not copy its files, profiles or assumptions into Double Agent without verifying the game path and the signals your mapper reports.
Quick Recap
Decision guide
- Need guaranteed, documented support? Use the mouse and keyboard layout from the manual; it is the only peripheral configuration the PC documentation explicitly supports.
- Want to try a controller on Steam? Confirm Windows recognition, back up the game folder, and test the x360ce approach in
SCDA-OfflineSystem. - Movement works but the camera fails? Reconfigure the right stick as mouse-equivalent axes and check for trigger duplication.
- Nothing works after mapping? Remove competing remappers, restore the backup, and rebuild one profile from a clean launch.
- Buying hardware? Select a Windows-compatible controller whose sticks, triggers, D-pad and buttons can be verified before the return period ends; no particular model is confirmed by the available Double Agent documentation.
