Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse has full controller support on Steam, and its developers recommend using a controller. Connect an Xbox-compatible pad, or connect a DualSense to your PC with a USB cable, before launching the game. On first launch, choose whether A or B confirms selections, then open the in-game Controller tab to check or change bindings. If you remap anything, select Apply the Changes (Space is the documented apply key) before closing the tab.

What you need before starting

Steam lists Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse with Full Controller Support. The store page specifically identifies Xbox Controllers and DualSense Controllers (USB Only). It also lists a keyboard-only option, so a gamepad is recommended rather than required.

The game was released on Steam on 14 October 2026. KONAMI is the publisher, with KONAMI and Evil Empire identified as the developers. Those details matter when checking that you have opened the correct Steam title rather than a similarly named Castlevania entry.

Controller Connection covered by the Steam listing Button convention shown in the game Important qualification
Xbox-compatible controller Supported PC connection Xbox letters: A, B, X and Y The game’s default prompts are written for this convention.
Sony DualSense USB connection Xbox-style prompts, mapped by physical button position The listing specifies USB only; it does not claim wireless DualSense support for this game.
Keyboard Keyboard-only option Keyboard controls Useful as a fallback or for menu navigation when a pad is unavailable.

How to use a controller in Belmont’s Curse on Steam

  1. Choose a supported pad. Use an Xbox-compatible controller, or use a DualSense with a USB cable. For a DualSense, plan on keeping that cable connected while you play; Steam’s listing does not promise a wireless mode.
  2. Connect the controller before starting the game. Plug in the pad and allow the computer and Steam to recognize it before you launch Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. Starting with the pad already connected gives the game a controller to detect during initialization.
  3. Launch the game from Steam. Open your Steam Library, select Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, and choose Play.
  4. Answer the first-launch confirmation prompt. The controls guide reports a prompt asking you to choose a button for confirmation: A or B. Pick the convention you want to use. If you normally confirm with A, choose A; if you prefer the alternative convention, choose B.
  5. Open the Controller sub-tab. Use the in-game controls interface to inspect the current bindings. This is also where you change them. A PlayStation pad will still be described with Xbox button names, so use the matching physical positions rather than looking for Cross, Circle, Square or Triangle labels.
  6. Check the actions you use most. Confirm that movement, jumping, dodging, attacking, spell casting and the shoulder-trigger actions are comfortable before committing to a long session. The complete documented layout appears below.
  7. Apply any remapping. After changing a binding, activate Apply the Changes. The guide identifies Space as the apply key. Do not simply close the tab and assume an edit was saved.
  8. Close the Controller tab and play. If the pad still behaves unexpectedly, reopen the same tab and inspect the binding rather than changing the operating system’s keyboard settings.

What the A-or-B confirmation choice changes

The first-launch choice establishes which of the two face buttons you want to use for confirming selections. It is a convention choice, not a different controller mode. The game’s control interface continues to use Xbox labels after setup.

On an Xbox-style pad, A and B are literal labels. On a DualSense, read those prompts as positions: the Xbox A position corresponds to the PlayStation Cross (✕) button, while the Xbox B position corresponds to Circle (○). This is why a DualSense can display Xbox wording while remaining usable without translating every prompt manually.

Default controller layout

The controls guide documents the following Xbox-style layout. The PlayStation column gives the equivalent physical position on a DualSense or another PlayStation-layout pad.

Action Xbox control PlayStation position
Move Left stick (D-pad alternative) Left stick / D-pad
Jump A Cross (✕)
Dodge B Circle (○)
Attack X Square (□)
Cast Spell Y Triangle (△)
Arcane Whip RT R2
Holy Light LT L2
Interact RB R1
Heal LB L1
Observe Right stick Right stick
Map View button Matching system button
Equipment Menu button Matching system button

Two sensitivity settings are also documented with defaults of 0.75: Motion sensitivity and Eye sensitivity. These are guide-documented defaults, so check them again after a game update rather than assuming a patch preserved them.

How to remap buttons

Open the correct menu

From inside the game, open the controls interface and select the Controller sub-tab. The guide identifies this tab as the place to inspect and change bindings. You do not need to replace the entire default layout to change one action.

Make a targeted change

Choose the action whose binding you want to alter and assign the button or control that suits your hand position. The Xbox labels remain the reference language even when the connected device is a DualSense, so identify the desired PlayStation control by its matching physical position.

Commit the edit

Use the interface’s documented Apply the Changes command. The guide identifies Space as the key for applying the modification. Applying before leaving the tab is essential: closing the tab without that command can leave you playing with the earlier layout.

After applying, inspect the entry again and perform the action once in play. This confirms that you changed the intended command rather than another entry with a similar name. If it is not right, return to the Controller tab and apply the corrected assignment.

Xbox controller or DualSense: which is the simpler choice?

Decision point Xbox-compatible controller DualSense
Connection Use a supported PC connection. Connect by USB; the Steam listing specifies USB-only support.
On-screen labels Matches the game’s A/B/X/Y prompts directly. Shows Xbox labels, interpreted by physical position as Cross/Circle/Square/Triangle.
Best fit Players who want the game’s labels to match the letters printed on the pad. Players who already prefer the DualSense layout and do not mind a cable.
Potential adjustment Usually no label translation is needed. Remember that A corresponds to Cross and B to Circle when answering the first-launch prompt.

Neither option has a documented performance or latency advantage in the available material. Choose based on the connection you can maintain and whether you prefer letter prompts or PlayStation button shapes.

Troubleshooting controller setup

The game starts but does not respond to the pad

  • Quit the game completely.
  • Connect the Xbox-compatible controller or plug the DualSense into USB.
  • Launch the game again with the controller already connected.
  • At first launch, complete the A-or-B confirmation prompt instead of leaving it unanswered.
  • Open the Controller sub-tab and inspect the bindings.

This sequence follows the game’s documented setup flow and avoids testing the game before a supported device is present.

The DualSense works in other games but not here wirelessly

For this title, use USB. Steam’s listing identifies DualSense support as USB only; it does not establish wireless DualSense support. A wireless connection working elsewhere is therefore not evidence that it is supported by Belmont’s Curse.

The prompts show A, B, X and Y on a PlayStation pad

That is the documented interface convention. The controls guide uses Xbox names, while a PlayStation pad follows the matching physical positions. Read A as Cross, B as Circle, X as Square and Y as Triangle when translating the displayed instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A remapped control reverted

Return to the Controller sub-tab, make the assignment again, and activate Apply the Changes using Space before closing the tab. The documented workflow requires an explicit apply command.

You need to navigate without a working gamepad

Steam lists a keyboard-only option. Use that fallback to reach the controls interface or continue playing while you reconnect the controller. Once the pad is connected, relaunch with it present and inspect the Controller tab.

Steam Deck compatibility

SteamDB currently marks Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse as Playable on Steam Deck. Its configuration record says the default controller configuration is fully functional, all functionality is accessible with that default configuration, controller glyphs match the device, and the default graphics configuration performs well on the tested build.

That record carries a test timestamp of 5 October 2026. It describes the tested build, not a permanent guarantee for every future update. If a later patch changes controls or graphics behavior, recheck the game’s Controller tab and the current Steam Deck compatibility information.

Recommended setup checklist

  • Use an Xbox-compatible controller, or connect a DualSense by USB.
  • Connect the controller before launching the game.
  • Choose A or B when the first-launch confirmation prompt appears.
  • Remember that the interface uses Xbox button names, including on a DualSense.
  • Review the documented defaults: left stick or D-pad to move, A to jump, B to dodge, X to attack and Y to cast a spell.
  • Open the Controller sub-tab if any action feels wrong.
  • Apply every remapping with Apply the Changes (Space) before closing the tab.
  • Use the keyboard-only option if you need a temporary fallback.
  • On Steam Deck, start with the default configuration; the current SteamDB result is based on the 5 October 2026 tested build.

What the Steam recommendation means

The Steam store listing states: “The developers recommend playing this game with a controller.” That recommendation aligns with the title’s full controller support and the documented layout for movement, combat, spells, interaction and menus. Keyboard play remains available, but the intended setup is a connected gamepad configured through the in-game Controller tab.
