Connect and verify your controller in Windows before launching Poly Fighter, then use the game’s live controls screen to test and remap every action. A standard USB or XInput gamepad is an optional, sensible choice because Steam tags Poly Fighter as Controller. Keyboard play is also practical, but the official pages do not publish a fixed key map, so the exact defaults must be read from your installed build.
The dependable workflow is: connect one input device, confirm that Windows sees it, launch Poly Fighter, inspect Controls or Settings, keep the default layout initially, and test movement, attacks, specials, menus, and confirmation in training or a low-stakes encounter. Only then change bindings.
What Poly Fighter supports on PC
Poly Fighter is a single-player roguelike fighting game from HeartLoop Games, distributed on Steam for Windows. Steam lists a release date of 13 October 2026. The store describes approachable controls and tags the game as Controller, which supports using a conventional PC gamepad without assuming that a particular console model or fight stick is required.

Its controls, menus, balance, and quality-of-life features can change between builds. The developer says the current version includes 16 playable characters, a Discovery Loop, and a technique-learning system. A launch announcement also lists hundreds of moves, perks, and upgrades; Classic, Cozy, and Fierce modes; Steam Deck compatibility; and 13 languages. Treat the labels and button prompts you see in your own installation as authoritative if they differ from examples elsewhere.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Check your PC before troubleshooting input
Input problems are easier to diagnose when the game itself meets the published minimum specification. Steam lists these requirements:
| Component | Minimum listed requirement | Why it matters for setup |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Older Windows editions may fail to provide current controller drivers or game support. |
| Processor | Intel Core i5 12th generation or AMD equivalent | Below this level, stutter can make otherwise correct inputs feel delayed. |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | Close unnecessary applications if Windows is paging heavily. |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 | Frame-time spikes can be mistaken for missed attacks or menu presses. |
| Storage | 10 GB available space | Leave additional room for updates and shader or cache files. |
These are Steam’s published minimums, not a promise of a particular frame rate or latency. If the game runs unevenly, solve performance issues separately from button mapping: a controller cannot correct input that arrives during a large frame-time spike.
Set up a controller step by step
1. Connect only one controller first
- For a wired pad, plug the USB cable directly into the PC rather than through an unpowered hub. Wait a few seconds for Windows to install or activate its device driver.
- For a wireless pad, pair it in Windows before opening Steam. Confirm that it has charge, that its wireless receiver is attached if one is required, and that no other computer or console is claiming the connection.
- Leave extra gamepads, virtual devices, and steering or arcade peripherals disconnected during the first test. One active device makes prompt and assignment problems much easier to identify.
2. Confirm detection in Windows
Use Windows’ game-controller panel before blaming Poly Fighter. Open Windows Search and look for Set up USB game controllers or USB game controllers, open the matching panel, select the device, and choose Properties. Press sticks and buttons and watch the Test tab respond. The exact dialog wording can vary by Windows version.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- If the controller is missing, try another USB port or cable, charge or re-pair the wireless unit, and restart Windows.
- If it appears but buttons do not register, install the device’s current Windows driver, remove conflicting virtual-controller software, and test again.
- Do not proceed to game-specific remapping until this panel shows reliable movement and button activity. Poly Fighter cannot receive input that Windows is not delivering.
3. Start Steam and launch Poly Fighter
Once Windows sees the controller, open Steam and start Poly Fighter with the device still connected. Because the store identifies the game with the Controller tag, begin with the native controller connection rather than immediately adding a third-party mapper. Third-party layers can translate a pad into a second virtual device and make duplicate inputs harder to diagnose.
4. Read the live controls screen
Open the game’s Controls, Settings, or similarly named menu before starting a serious run. Official pages do not provide a definitive button chart, and exact menu labels can change with the Steam client and game build. Record the prompts shown on your screen rather than copying a layout from another fighting game.
Keep the default layout for the first pass. If every action is present and the prompts are understandable, you have a known baseline for later changes. If a button is blank, an action is duplicated, or an input does nothing, make a note of it before remapping so you can tell whether the issue is a bad binding or a detection problem.

5. Test every action in a safe situation
Enter training, if available, or use the first low-stakes encounter. Test the complete path from neutral movement to combat and menus:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Walk in every direction and test both analog stick and directional-pad behavior if both are offered.
- Try light, medium, and heavy attacks individually, watching for the exact on-screen prompt.
- Use special attacks and any motion or diagonal input shown by the game.
- Open and close pause or menu screens.
- Use confirm, back, cancel, and any character or technique-selection actions.
- Release every button and verify that no attack, movement direction, or menu command remains stuck.
Write down the displayed prompts or capture a screenshot for your own reference. This is more reliable than a generic controller diagram because Poly Fighter’s final bindings are build-dependent.
6. Remap only the buttons that need it
If the game exposes editable bindings, select one action at a time, press the replacement button, and apply or save the profile before leaving the menu. Change the smallest number of actions necessary. A complete redesign makes it difficult to identify which assignment caused a failure.
After saving, repeat the full test. Pay particular attention to combinations, diagonals, and any action that uses a trigger or shoulder button. If the game offers separate profiles, name the profile by device or purpose so you can restore it after an update.
Set up the keyboard
1. Open controls before starting a run
Launch Poly Fighter with the keyboard connected and open the in-game controls or settings screen. The official store and launch information do not publish a definitive keyboard table, so do not assume that keys from another fighting game apply here.
2. Identify the current assignments
Read the displayed movement, attack, special, pause, confirm, and back keys. Check whether the game shows separate entries for directional movement, diagonal or motion inputs, menu navigation, and combat actions. If a key is not listed, test it in a safe menu or training area instead of guessing during a live run.

3. Choose a compact, reachable layout
If rebinding is available, keep movement and attacks close enough that your hand does not leave its support position. A common starting point is WASD or the arrow keys for movement with nearby letter or punctuation keys for attacks, but this is only an example; the game’s own binding screen determines what is possible. Avoid placing essential actions on keys that Windows or another overlay already uses.
4. Test combinations and diagonals
Keyboard layouts can feel fine for single presses and fail on simultaneous inputs. Test opposing directions, diagonal or motion commands shown by the game, attack combinations, pause, confirm, and back. Hold each movement direction briefly, release it, and make sure the character stops as expected. Save or apply the profile only after this complete check.
5. Keep controller and keyboard changes separate
If a controller remains connected, determine which device Poly Fighter assigns to active input. Press one key or button at a time while watching the prompt or character response. Do not edit both layouts simultaneously; otherwise a change intended for the keyboard may appear to be a controller fault, or vice versa.

Use Poly Fighter’s own controls menu first when it provides the action you need. Native bindings preserve the game’s understanding of attacks, menu navigation, and prompts. Steam’s controller configuration can be useful when a device is detected by Steam but a native layout is missing or when you need a translation layer, but its labels and menu path vary by Steam client and controller type.
If Steam Input is enabled, compare the game’s native layout with the Steam layout before changing anything. Two active mappings can send duplicate commands, assign one physical button to two actions, or make the in-game prompt disagree with the button you press. Change one layer, launch the game, and retest before touching the other.
- Record the working native assignments from the in-game controls screen.
- Open the game’s controller configuration from its Steam library page only if native input is incomplete or the device requires translation.
- Apply one mapping change, return to the game, and test movement, attacks, specials, and menus.
- If behavior becomes inconsistent, restore the previous Steam layout and test the native layout by itself.
The exact Steam Input wording is not fixed across clients, so follow the labels visible in your installation rather than a guide written for a different version.

Controller versus keyboard: which should you use?
There is no evidence-based universal winner. Poly Fighter’s fighting and roguelike systems reward reliable inputs, so use training to compare both devices with the same actions.
| Consideration | Controller | Keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| Long-session comfort | Usually familiar for players who prefer hand-held controls; comfort depends on grip, stick tension, and button spacing. | Can be comfortable when movement and attacks fit a natural hand position; cramped clusters cause fatigue. |
| Directional precision | Analog sticks offer gradual movement; a directional pad can give distinct digital directions. | Keys provide clear digital presses, but simultaneous or diagonal inputs depend on rollover and the chosen layout. |
| Remapping flexibility | Native game bindings or Steam Input may expose broad remapping, but duplicate virtual devices can complicate troubleshooting. | Easy to move actions among nearby keys when the game exposes keyboard rebinding. |
| Prompt readability | Prompts may use generic button names or symbols that differ by device. | Letter and arrow prompts are often direct, but exact Poly Fighter defaults are build-dependent. |
| Setup friction | Wired connection is usually immediate; wireless adds pairing, charging, and receiver checks. | No pairing is needed, but another application may already reserve a key. |
| Existing hardware | Worth trying if you already own a standard USB or XInput pad. | Costs nothing beyond the keyboard already attached to the PC. |
Choose the layout that produces consistent movement and special inputs in training. If one device feels unreliable, keep the other as your primary input rather than endlessly changing both configurations.

Windows does not detect the controller
- Disconnect and reconnect the cable directly to another USB port.
- Replace a detachable cable that may provide power but not data.
- Charge the wireless controller, remove its Windows pairing, and pair it again.
- Restart Windows and check the game-controller panel before opening Steam.
- Test with no other controller or virtual gamepad software running.
If the device still fails the Windows test panel, Poly Fighter and Steam are not the first places to troubleshoot.
Windows detects it, but Poly Fighter does not
- Close Poly Fighter completely.
- Disconnect the controller and reconnect it.
- Restart Steam.
- Launch the game with only that controller connected.
- Open the controls screen and test the default layout before enabling additional mapping layers.
This sequence removes stale device sessions and makes sure the game initializes after the controller is available.
The wrong controller receives input
Disconnect every extra gamepad, wheel, fight stick, and virtual device. Reconnect only the controller you intend to use and relaunch. If Steam Input is active, compare its selected device and layout with the game’s native assignment. A second virtual device can make a controller appear detected while sending commands from a different source.
Buttons work in menus but not in combat
Return to the live controls screen and check that light, medium, heavy, special, and confirm actions each have a distinct assignment. Test the same button in training or a low-stakes encounter. If only a combination or diagonal fails, inspect the exact motion shown by the game and test the input without Steam remapping before changing the binding.

Prompts do not match your hardware
Generic prompts can use labels that differ from the lettering printed on a controller. Press one physical button at a time and record the prompt Poly Fighter displays. Do not infer that a symbol or letter means the same physical location on every device.
Wireless input feels delayed or drops out
- Charge the controller and keep the receiver or PC within a clear range.
- Remove competing wireless connections temporarily.
- Test the same game with a wired connection to separate radio interference from game configuration.
- Keep only one mapping layer active while diagnosing latency.
If wired input is stable and wireless input is not, the next suspects are pairing, battery, receiver placement, or local interference rather than Poly Fighter’s bindings.
A keyboard key does nothing or opens another app
Check whether Poly Fighter lists that key as an action and whether an overlay, chat tool, or accessibility shortcut also uses it. Rebind the action to an unused nearby key if the game permits it, then test the replacement in training. Keep movement, attacks, pause, confirm, and back on keys you can reach without leaving control of movement.

An update changed your layout
Because Poly Fighter is in Early Access, a build can change controls, menus, or balance. Reopen the live controls screen after an update, verify every action, and restore your saved notes or profile only after checking that the same actions still exist. If a binding disappears, use the current menu rather than importing an old layout blindly.
A repeatable five-minute input test
Use this checklist whenever you install the game on a new PC, switch devices, or receive a substantial update:
- Verify the controller in Windows or confirm that the keyboard works outside the game.
- Launch Poly Fighter with one intended input device connected.
- Read and record the current controls screen.
- Test all movement directions, attacks, specials, pause, confirm, and back.
- Test any diagonal or motion input shown by the game.
- Apply only necessary remaps and save them.
- Repeat the test after remapping and before beginning a serious run.
Bottom line
For the least friction, connect a standard USB or XInput controller before launching Poly Fighter, confirm it in Windows, and start with the game’s default layout. A keyboard is equally viable when its live bindings feel comfortable. Since no official fixed key chart is published and Early Access builds can change, the controls screen in your installation—not a third-party diagram—is the final authority. Test both devices in training and keep the one that delivers reliable movement, attacks, specials, and menu input.
