Android lets you choose an installed app as the phone’s default digital assistant. That means a community-made assistant such as Dicio can respond to the system’s assistant gesture instead of Google’s assistant. It does not, by itself, transfer Google’s “Hey Google” hotword service to Dicio or guarantee identical features.
This guide uses Dicio as a documented example. You will install the app from the project’s current distribution source, complete its first-run setup, select it in Android’s Digital assistant app setting, test manual activation, and then configure Dicio’s separate wake-word feature if you want hands-free use.
What you are setting up
There are two independent parts to the setup:
- System assistant selection: Android chooses which installed app opens when you use the assistant gesture or another system entry point.
- Voice activation: The selected app may offer its own wake-word engine. Dicio documents “Hey Dicio” as its default phrase and separately supports importing a custom wake-word model.
Changing the first setting does not automatically replace Google’s “Hey Google” detection or Voice Match. Treat the default-assistant choice and wake-word configuration as separate decisions. You can therefore have Dicio selected for a gesture while its wake-word listener is disabled, or configure its wake word after selecting it as the default.

Check the project’s current installation information
Dicio’s README or release page is the authoritative place to find its current download channel and compatibility notes. The available project material does not establish a current release number, minimum Android version, or a single distribution channel, so check those details immediately before installing. Avoid relying on an old APK mirror or an article that may describe a different release.

Read the installation notes for the exact release you intend to use. Distribution method, permissions, supported Android versions, and model-download behavior can change. If the project offers more than one package, choose the one identified for ordinary Android users rather than a developer build unless you have a specific reason to test one.
Understand what Dicio is
The Dicio project describes Dicio as “a free and open source voice assistant running on Android.” Its project documentation says that interpretation and responses can happen on the device when possible, with both speech and graphical feedback. That is an architectural and privacy description from the project, not an independent performance or security audit.
“Community-made” does not mean that every feature behaves like Google Assistant or Gemini. Dicio documents a set of skills and input methods, and you should judge those against the tasks you actually perform. A successful default-app selection only proves that Android can hand the assistant entry point to Dicio; it does not prove that every Google service, language, or command is available.
Have the phone ready
- Use an Android phone on which you can install applications and change the default digital assistant.
- Keep enough free storage for the app and its speech model. Dicio’s README describes its small Vosk speech models as weighing approximately 50 MB. That is an approximate, project-published model size, not a guaranteed total storage requirement for every language or release.
- Be prepared to grant microphone access when Dicio requests it during setup. Do not grant a permission that the app does not explain or that you do not need for the feature you intend to use.
- Have a reliable connection available for setup if the app needs to download a language model or if you plan to test weather, search, navigation, lyrics, translation, or another network-backed skill.
Before changing the default, note how your phone currently invokes its assistant. It may use a navigation-bar gesture, a button action, or another manufacturer-specific shortcut. Knowing the original gesture makes it easier to tell whether Dicio was selected successfully and whether a separate shortcut setting is overriding Android’s default.
Install and initialize Dicio
- Open the Dicio project’s current README or release page. Follow the installation method and compatibility information shown there. Because the project’s distribution channel and latest release were not established here, do not assume a particular store listing, APK filename, or Android minimum.
- Install the app. If Android warns that the source is outside a store, verify that you are using the project’s own current distribution instructions before proceeding.
- Launch Dicio and complete its first-run screens. Let the app download or prepare language resources when prompted. The README says model download starts automatically when needed to support language changes.
- Allow microphone access if you want speech input or wake-word detection. Android may show this request the first time Dicio needs the microphone rather than during installation.
- Review the app’s input and output settings. Dicio documents speech and graphical feedback, so choose the modes that suit your phone and environment before testing.
- Choose and verify a language. Select a language listed by the current project documentation, then wait for any associated model download to finish. If you change languages later, allow the new model to download before judging recognition.
The project documentation identifies the speech and wake-word components, but it does not provide a universally verified consumer walkthrough for every Android release. Labels and first-run screens can therefore differ from the sequence above. If a permission or setting is not required for the feature you want, you can decline it and revisit Android’s app-permission screen later.
Make Dicio the default digital assistant
Use Android’s common settings path
On many current Android devices, the documented route is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Open Default apps.
- Tap Digital assistant app.
- Open Default digital assistant app.
- Select Dicio (or the alternative assistant you installed).
Manufacturers and Android versions rename or relocate these controls. If you do not see the path, use the Settings search field and search for digital assistant app. Some phones place the same control under an “Assistant,” “Default apps,” or gesture-settings page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not confuse the browser’s default, the app used for voice typing, and the digital assistant app. They are separate Android roles. Selecting Dicio here changes the assistant entry point; it does not make Dicio your browser, keyboard, or every voice-service provider.
Confirm the selection
After selecting Dicio, invoke your phone’s normal assistant gesture—for example, the navigation-bar corner swipe or another gesture shown by your device. The exact gesture is device-dependent. A successful test should open or hand control to Dicio rather than Google’s assistant. If the gesture still opens Google, return to the Default digital assistant app screen and verify the selection, then check whether the manufacturer has a separate gesture-assignment switch.
Test both the gesture and an ordinary in-app request. For example, try a calculation or timer, then observe whether Dicio provides the documented speech or graphical feedback. This separates a default-assistant routing problem from a microphone, language-model, or skill problem.

Configure Dicio’s wake word separately
Use the documented default phrase
Dicio documents OpenWakeWord for wake-word support and lists “Hey Dicio” as the default phrase. Enabling this feature is separate from making Dicio the system default. Follow the wake-word controls in Dicio’s current settings, grant microphone access if Android asks again, and test the phrase in a quiet environment first.
Start with the exact documented phrase before attempting a custom model. Speak normally at first, then repeat from the distance where you expect to use the phone. If manual activation works but the phrase does not, the default-app setting is probably not the part that needs changing; inspect wake-word, microphone, language, and background-operation settings instead.
Import a custom wake-word model
If you have a compatible TensorFlow Lite model, Dicio documents this in-app route:
- Open Dicio.
- Go to Settings > Input and output methods.
- Tap Import custom wake word.
- Select the supported
.tflitemodel from your phone. - Return to the wake-word settings and test the imported model.
The model must be compatible with the wake-word implementation; changing a filename extension does not make an arbitrary audio model usable. Keep the original model file until you have confirmed that Dicio recognizes it. If the import control or accepted model requirements differ in your release, follow the current in-app or project instructions rather than guessing.
Why “Hey Google” may stop working
Google documents “Hey Google” and Voice Match for Google’s assistant. Android’s default-assistant setting does not promise that Google’s hotword service will continue to listen for, or launch, a different app. If you choose Dicio, use Dicio’s documented wake phrase or its custom-model process instead of assuming that “Hey Google” will redirect to it.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Hotword detection also has a separate microphone and background-lifecycle cost. If you do not need hands-free activation, leave the wake-word feature off and use the system gesture. That gives you a simple way to test Dicio without adding a second source of activation problems.
What Dicio can do
Dicio’s project lists skills across common assistant tasks. The list describes intended capabilities; it is not a claim of feature parity with Google Assistant or any other commercial assistant.
| Skill area | Examples listed by the Dicio project |
|---|---|
| Phone and apps | Launch applications; call contacts |
| Utilities | Calculations; timers; current time; flashlight control |
| Navigation and media | Navigation; media controls |
| Information | Weather; lyrics; web search; translation |
| Notifications and conversation | Notification reading; jokes |
Some listed skills name or depend on external services. “On-device when possible” therefore should not be read as “every command works offline.” A command that needs current weather, web results, online lyrics, navigation data, or another network-backed service may require connectivity.
Evaluate skills individually. A phone call, timer, calculation, or flashlight request may have different requirements from a web search or weather query. Language support can also vary by skill, so a language appearing in the project list does not guarantee that every listed function is translated or equally capable in that language.

Languages and speech-model storage
Languages listed by the project
The repository lists Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Ukrainian. Confirm the current language list in the project before changing your primary language, because support can change between releases and individual skills may not be translated equally.

When comparing languages, check three separate things: whether speech recognition has a model, whether Dicio’s interface and responses are available, and whether the skills you use accept that language. Changing the recognition language can also trigger another model download.
What the approximately 50 MB figure means
The Dicio README describes small Vosk speech models as weighing approximately 50 MB and says a model download begins automatically when needed to support language changes. The figure is an approximate project statement, recorded in 2026, rather than an independent benchmark or a promise that the entire installation occupies exactly 50 MB. Multiple languages, application data, wake-word models, and Android’s own storage accounting can increase the total.
If storage is tight, install only the language resources you need and review Android’s app-storage screen after setup. Do not delete model files manually while Dicio is running; use the app’s language or storage controls if the current release provides them.
Privacy and connectivity: how to think about the setup
Dicio’s project says that interpretation and responses run on the device when possible. That can reduce the amount of speech that needs to leave the phone for commands handled locally. However, the project’s skill list includes web search, weather, navigation, lyrics, translation, and other functions that may involve external services. Before enabling a skill, decide whether its online behavior fits your privacy expectations.
- Use Android’s microphone-permission controls to disable access when you do not need speech or wake-word detection.
- Test a simple local command, such as a calculation or timer, with connectivity disabled if you want to see which functions remain available on your particular setup.
- Do not infer complete offline operation from the presence of on-device speech recognition alone.
- Review notification-reading access carefully. It is a separate capability from ordinary microphone permission and may expose notification content to the assistant.
These checks are practical tests, not a substitute for reading the project’s current privacy and service documentation. Online skills can have their own terms and data handling, so consider each one separately.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
Dicio does not appear in the assistant list
- Confirm that installation completed and that Dicio opens normally.
- Restart the phone, then revisit Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app.
- Search Settings for digital assistant app because the manufacturer may have moved the control.
- Check the project’s current compatibility information; the available documentation does not establish a universal minimum Android version.
- Make sure you installed the consumer app described by the project, not only a developer sample or a package that lacks the Android assistant service.
The assistant gesture still opens Google
- Verify that Dicio is selected under Default digital assistant app, not merely installed.
- Try the device’s documented assistant gesture again after closing and reopening Dicio.
- Look for a separate navigation, power-button, or gesture setting controlled by the phone manufacturer.
- Do not treat “Hey Google” behavior as proof that the default selection failed; Google’s hotword and Voice Match are separate services.
“Hey Dicio” does not trigger
- Confirm microphone permission in Android’s app-permission screen.
- Enable Dicio’s wake-word feature in its own settings; selecting Dicio as the default assistant does not enable wake-word listening automatically.
- Test in a quiet room and speak the documented phrase exactly.
- Check whether battery restrictions are stopping Dicio from running in the background. The setting name varies by manufacturer.
- Verify that a language model is installed and that Dicio is using the language you are speaking.
A custom wake word fails to import
- Use the documented path Settings > Input and output methods > Import custom wake word.
- Verify that the file is a compatible
.tflitewake-word model rather than a renamed file of another type. - Keep the model in local storage and retry after restarting Dicio.
- If the project’s current documentation specifies model requirements, follow those requirements for your release.
A command needs the internet
That is expected for skills such as web search, weather, navigation, lyrics, or other externally serviced functions. Test local utilities separately and treat each online skill according to the service it uses.
Dicio recognizes speech but gives an unexpected result
- Check the selected language and wait for its model download to complete.
- Try a short, clearly phrased command that matches a documented skill.
- Separate speech recognition from service availability: a recognized weather or search request can still fail if its external service is unavailable.
- Test the same request manually after opening Dicio to determine whether the problem is wake-word activation or the skill itself.
How to switch back or remove Dicio
- Open Settings and return to Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app, or find the equivalent using Settings search.
- Select Google, another listed assistant, or None.
- Invoke the assistant gesture to confirm the change.
- If you customized a power-button or navigation gesture, adjust that separate setting as well.
- Only after changing the default should you uninstall Dicio, if you no longer need it. Removing the selected assistant may cause Android to prompt you for a replacement.
Switching back does not necessarily undo Dicio’s language files or permissions. If you want to remove its stored data, use Android’s app settings after changing the default, then uninstall it according to the project or Android instructions.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not confuse Dicio with Android’s platform sample
The Android Open Source Project includes a VoiceInteractionService sample that demonstrates how Android can select a “Digital assistant app.” Its setup instructions are developer-oriented: building the platform sample, using root access and a remounted system partition, pushing a privileged application and permission XML into a system image, rebooting, and granting microphone access.
That process is not a consumer installation method for Dicio. A normal phone user should install Dicio through the project’s current release instructions and select it through Android’s default-app settings. The platform sample is relevant only if you are developing or modifying an Android system image. Rooting or modifying a system partition is not required for the ordinary Dicio setup described here.
How to evaluate Dicio against another assistant
If you are deciding whether a community-made assistant meets your needs, compare concrete capabilities rather than assuming that “default assistant” means full Google-style parity.

- On-device versus external processing: Identify which commands work locally and which depend on web or other services.
- Language availability: Match your preferred language to the project’s current list and test the skills you actually use.
- Device and Android compatibility: Recheck the project’s release notes and your manufacturer’s settings because neither the menu path nor compatibility is universal.
- Storage: Account for the app, one or more speech models, wake-word resources, and any additional language downloads. The project’s approximately 50 MB figure applies to a small Vosk model, not necessarily the whole installation.
A useful comparison test is to run the same small set of tasks on each assistant: launch an app, calculate a value, set a timer, make a contact call, control media, and request an online result. Record which tasks work without connectivity, which require an exact phrase, and which depend on permissions. This produces a more meaningful result than comparing brand names.
