Keep the laptop where its display is comfortable to view, then arrange the keyboard halves around it—not the other way around. Start with both halves in front of the laptop, or place them to either side if you have enough desk space. Keep the laptop’s trackpad clear if you use it; if you use a separate mouse or trackpad, try it in the gap between the halves or beside the half you type on. Adjust the layout until your shoulders are relaxed, your wrists are roughly straight, and the screen remains easy to see.

Choose the layout around the screen first

A split columnar keyboard gives you more freedom to position the keys than a one-piece keyboard, but it does not create extra desk space. The laptop display, the laptop’s built-in trackpad, the keyboard halves, and any separate pointing device still need to fit within a comfortable reach. Set the laptop in a useful viewing position before arranging the keyboard; otherwise, you may end up lowering or crowding the screen just to make the halves fit.

Apple’s Mac ergonomics guidance says to arrange the display so its top is slightly below eye level when you are seated at the keyboard. That is general ergonomic guidance, not a laptop-specific measurement or a guarantee that every desk can accommodate that position. If placing the laptop between the halves makes the screen too low, use another arrangement instead. Kinesis likewise warns that the screen height may not be optimal when the laptop sits in the middle gap.

That makes the display a useful first test, rather than a finishing touch. Open the laptop in its normal working position and check the view before you decide where the keyboard goes. If the laptop has to be pushed back, lowered, or wedged into a narrow gap to accommodate the halves, reconsider the arrangement. The split design gives you options, but the halves still need enough room to sit where your hands can reach them without making the screen awkward to see.

Also decide whether you intend to use the laptop’s own trackpad. If you do, its surface needs to remain uncovered and reachable; leaving it technically visible is not enough if the keyboard makes it inconvenient to use. If you mainly use a separate mouse or trackpad, that device needs a place of its own at keyboard height and within comfortable reach. Treat these as related but separate layout questions: a setup can keep the display clear while placing the pointing device poorly, or preserve trackpad access while forcing an uncomfortable screen position.

Set up the keyboard and pointing device step by step

  1. Set the laptop’s position. Place it where you can view the display comfortably and open the hinge normally. Keep the built-in trackpad accessible if you intend to use it. Do not force the laptop into the space between the halves if that compromises your screen position. Apple’s display guidance—top of the screen slightly below eye level while seated at the keyboard—is a general reference, not a prescribed laptop stand height.
  2. Place the keyboard halves. Try both halves in front of the laptop first. If the desk allows, try one half on each side. Begin around shoulder width as a reference, not a fixed measurement: Kinesis recommends positioning the modules around shoulder width, but the comfortable spacing depends on your body and the available space. The goal is not to make the halves look perfectly symmetrical; it is to give both hands a natural position while leaving room for the laptop and pointing device.
  3. Adjust separation and rotation in small increments. Let your shoulders relax and aim for a roughly straight line from wrist to hand. Move the halves a little at a time rather than making a large change based on appearance alone. The halves do not need to be equally far from the laptop if the desk layout or your reach makes that uncomfortable. After each adjustment, check whether your hands can reach the keys without reaching around the laptop or turning your wrists sharply.
  4. Check the pointing-device route. If you use the laptop trackpad, make sure your keyboard placement has not covered it or made it awkward to reach. For a separate mouse or trackpad, try the middle gap between separated halves, or place it beside the half you use. Apple recommends keeping a mouse or trackpad at keyboard height and within comfortable reach. The available gap is only useful if the device actually fits there and is reachable without moving a keyboard half every time you point.
  5. Adjust keyboard angle only if useful. If your keyboard supports tenting and the angle feels comfortable, adjust it. Tenting changes the keyboard’s angle; it does not raise the laptop display or solve a screen obstruction. Leave it as a separate adjustment from the layout, so you can judge whether the halves are in the right place before attributing the result to their angle.
  6. Try ordinary typing and pointing. Use the arrangement for the kinds of tasks you normally do. If you have to reach around a half to use the trackpad, twist to see the screen, or keep shifting the keyboard to point, move the laptop or keyboard and try again. This is a practical fit check, not a clinical assessment. A position that works while typing but makes pointing awkward is not a complete solution if you regularly switch between the two.

Make the first round of adjustments simple: establish the laptop position, place the halves, then choose a pointing-device location. If you move all three at once, it is harder to tell which change improved or worsened access. There is no exact separation measurement in the available manufacturer guidance that applies to everyone, so shoulder width is a starting reference rather than a specification to reproduce precisely.

Compare common desk arrangements

Arrangement When it may suit you What to check
Laptop centered, keyboard halves in front or to either side You want to preserve access to the laptop display and built-in trackpad. Make sure the desk has enough depth and the keyboard remains within comfortable reach. Check that the halves do not force you to reach over them to use the trackpad.
Laptop in the gap between separated halves The laptop still fits at a comfortable viewing height and both halves can sit comfortably on either side. Kinesis cautions that screen height may be suboptimal in this arrangement. Check the display position before settling on it; the available gap does not make the laptop’s screen height automatically suitable.
Separate mouse or trackpad between the halves The halves can be separated enough to create a reachable central space. Keep the pointing device at keyboard height and within comfortable reach, as Apple recommends. Confirm the device fits the gap and that the laptop trackpad remains available if you also use it.
One half with the pointing device where the other half would sit You use one half or need a narrower arrangement. Dygma presents this as a placement suggestion, not a universal ergonomic rule. Check whether the position works for your hands and reach, and whether the laptop and its display remain unobstructed.
Compact keyboard with integrated pointing device There is little room for a separate mouse or trackpad. Check the keyboard’s actual dimensions, laptop-trackpad access, pointing-device reach, and compatibility with your laptop. An integrated device may reduce the number of separate objects on the desk, but does not guarantee that the laptop’s own pointing surface stays accessible.

Compare layouts by their footprint, how far apart the halves can sit, display height, access to the built-in trackpad, reach to a separate pointing device, and keyboard height and angle. If you travel with the keyboard, include how much room it takes up when packed. An integrated pointing device can reduce the need for a separate mouse or trackpad, but it does not automatically preserve access to the laptop’s own trackpad.

The centered-laptop arrangement is a sensible first try when the built-in trackpad matters, because it starts by preserving the laptop’s normal screen and pointing-surface position. Putting the laptop in the gap can be useful only if that central placement also leaves the display at a comfortable height. Do not choose it just because the keyboard halves can be separated: Kinesis specifically cautions that the screen may end up too low. A separate pointing device in the center is a different use of the gap and should be judged by reach and height, not by the screen-height warning for a laptop placed there.

What to do when the laptop and keyboard compete for space

Keep the laptop trackpad in use

Place the laptop so its trackpad remains uncovered and reachable, then fit the halves around that position. If the halves in front of the laptop would make the trackpad hard to reach, try putting them to either side or changing their separation. Prioritize an arrangement that lets you point without reaching over an obstruction. A layout that looks balanced may still be awkward if the trackpad is inconvenient to access.

If you cannot fit both halves in front without crowding the laptop, test whether either half can sit to the side while the display stays centered in your view. The halves are separate, so the arrangement need not be a single straight row. Still, do not solve a keyboard-space problem by moving the laptop into a position that makes the screen difficult to see. The practical constraint is the combined footprint of laptop, keyboard and pointing surface—not just the keyboard width.

Use a separate pointing device

When the halves are spread apart, the center gap may provide a place for a separate mouse or trackpad. Another option is to position the device beside the active half. Apple’s guidance is to keep it at keyboard height and within comfortable reach. These are layout options to test, not rules that require a particular device position; the available space and your reach determine what works.

If you plan to switch between the laptop trackpad and a separate device, make sure both remain usable rather than optimizing the desk for only one. The pointing device should not be so far from the keys that you have to reach, and the laptop trackpad should not be hidden behind a keyboard half if it is still part of your normal workflow. A center gap is not a requirement: if the halves cannot be separated enough to make one, try the side position instead.

Consider an integrated pointing device

If there is no comfortable place for a separate pointing device, compact keyboards with integrated touchpads or trackpads are another category to consider. MoErgo describes its Go60 as a travel ergonomic keyboard with dual integrated 40 mm touchpads and optional six-step tenting. BastardKB describes its Dilemma as a travel-oriented split columnar keyboard with an integrated trackpad and adjustable angle. These manufacturer descriptions establish features, not a tested fit with any particular laptop. Check the dimensions and connection compatibility before choosing one.

Integrated does not mean universally compatible or necessarily small enough for a particular desk. Compare the keyboard’s actual dimensions with the laptop and with the space you have, then confirm that its pointing device is positioned where you can reach it. If keeping the laptop’s built-in trackpad in use is a requirement, check that the keyboard layout does not obstruct it even if the keyboard supplies its own pointing surface. A compact form factor may address the lack of space for a separate mouse; it does not by itself solve screen placement.

Tenting: useful angle adjustment, not a screen fix

Tenting raises the center or changes the angle of a keyboard half, depending on its design. It can be part of adjusting how the keyboard sits, but it does not change laptop-screen height, free up trackpad space, or make an obstructed display visible. Treat it as a separate comfort adjustment after deciding where the laptop and pointing device belong.

Keyboard designs vary in how they provide an angle adjustment. ZSA says the Voyager includes four magnetic tenting legs. MoErgo lists optional six-step tenting for the Go60. Kinesis describes three integrated tenting settings on the Advantage360. BastardKB describes the Dilemma as having an adjustable angle. These are different implementation details, not a shared standard; compare the actual adjustment options on the model you are considering rather than assuming that all split keyboards tent in the same way.

Kinesis makes a general statement that research indicates moderate tenting can reduce pain associated with forearm pronation, but the opened page does not identify the underlying study or its publication year. That claim should not be read as a quantified result or as proof that tenting will help every user. For the setup question here, the practical distinction is clearer: tenting changes keyboard angle, while laptop height, screen visibility and pointing-device access require separate layout decisions.

Keyboard example Manufacturer-stated feature
ZSA Voyager ZSA describes it as a laptop-friendly, 52-key split keyboard with a columnar layout. It includes four magnetic tenting legs; trackball and trackpad modules are offered.
MoErgo Go60 MoErgo describes dual integrated 40 mm touchpads and optional six-step tenting. Its user guide lists Bluetooth LE and wired configurations.
Kinesis Advantage360 Kinesis describes three integrated tenting settings.
BastardKB Dilemma BastardKB describes an integrated trackpad and adjustable angle.

These examples illustrate different form factors and manufacturer-stated features; they are not independent evidence of ergonomic benefits or proof that a model will fit a particular laptop. Product-page and guide details were checked on October 13, 2026. The evidence available here does not establish current stock, marketplace availability, or prices.

Choosing between the product examples

Use the examples to identify the sort of setup you want, not as a ranking. If your priority is a laptop-friendly split columnar keyboard, ZSA describes the 52-key Voyager that way and lists optional trackball and trackpad modules as well as its included magnetic tenting legs. If you want integrated touchpads, the Go60’s manufacturer-listed dual 40 mm touchpads make it a relevant form factor to compare; its guide lists Bluetooth LE and wired configurations. If an integrated trackpad and adjustable angle are the features you are comparing, BastardKB describes those on the Dilemma. The Advantage360 is an example of a fully split design with three integrated tenting settings, but its product description alone does not establish that it is the best fit for a laptop desk.

Before buying any of them, check dimensions against the desk and laptop arrangement you actually intend to use. Consider whether you need both halves, whether an integrated pointing device is useful or you prefer a separate one, and whether you still need the laptop’s own trackpad accessible. Check connection compatibility as well; the Go60 guide, for example, lists both Bluetooth LE and wired configurations, but that detail should not be generalized to other models. Feature descriptions are not evidence of a fit with every laptop, and the examples do not establish current price or stock.

Check the fit before committing to a layout or keyboard

  • Screen: Can you view the display without moving the laptop into an uncomfortable position? Is the laptop hinge able to open normally? If it sits between the halves, does that placement leave the screen at a usable height?
  • Trackpad: If you use the laptop’s built-in trackpad, can you reach it without moving a keyboard half? Is it genuinely convenient to use, not merely visible?
  • Pointing device: If you use a separate device, is it at keyboard height and within comfortable reach? Does the center gap or side position provide enough room?
  • Shoulders and wrists: Can you type with relaxed shoulders and a roughly straight wrist-to-hand line? Treat shoulder-width spacing as a reference, not a fixed specification.
  • Space: Is there enough desk depth and width for the laptop, both halves, and the pointing device? If not, can the halves move to either side without blocking the display or trackpad?
  • Angle: If the keyboard has tenting, does the available angle feel comfortable? Remember that it will not lift the laptop screen or create space for a pointing device.
  • Product fit: If considering a compact or integrated-pointing model, have you checked its actual dimensions, pointing-device placement, connection options and compatibility with your laptop?

No single spacing or half position is established as right for everyone. Kinesis’s shoulder-width recommendation is a starting reference, while Apple’s guidance supplies general display and pointing-device positioning advice. The practical test is whether the arrangement lets you type and point without sacrificing a comfortable screen view or having to work around an obstruction.

There are no product prices, stock checks or independent fit tests established for the models listed here. The product details above are manufacturer-stated features, so use them to decide what measurements and compatibility details to verify rather than treating them as a promise that a keyboard will suit your setup. No named, attributable statistic with a figure, publisher and year is available to support a numerical claim about outcomes. Keep the decision focused on the physical arrangement and the features you can confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Should the laptop go between the two keyboard halves?

Only if it remains at a comfortable viewing height and the halves still fit where your hands can reach them naturally. Kinesis warns that screen height may be suboptimal when the laptop is between the modules. Start with the laptop in a comfortable position, then see whether the halves can fit around it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should I put a mouse or separate trackpad?

Try the gap between separated halves or place it beside the active half. Apple recommends that a mouse or trackpad be at keyboard height and within comfortable reach. Neither suggested location is mandatory; use the one that fits your desk and reach without obstructing the laptop trackpad you still use.

How far apart should split keyboard halves be?

Kinesis recommends modules around shoulder width as a useful reference. It is not a fixed measurement for every person or desk. Adjust the separation in small increments while keeping your shoulders relaxed and your wrist-to-hand line roughly straight.

Does tenting stop the laptop screen or trackpad from being blocked?

No. Tenting changes the keyboard’s angle. It does not raise the laptop display, clear the built-in trackpad, or move a pointing device. Decide on the laptop and keyboard positions first; then consider tenting as a separate angle adjustment if your keyboard supports it.

What if I have room for only one keyboard half?

Dygma suggests placing the pointing device where the missing half would sit as one possible layout. Treat it as an example, not a universal rule: check that the location is comfortable for your reach and that the laptop screen and any trackpad you use remain accessible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an integrated trackpad keyboard fit my laptop setup?

Not necessarily. Integrated pointing devices can be useful when there is little room for a separate mouse or trackpad, but check the keyboard’s actual measurements, the placement of its pointing device, laptop compatibility and access to the laptop’s own trackpad. Manufacturer feature descriptions do not establish fit for a particular desk or laptop.

Does tenting prevent the laptop screen or trackpad from being blocked?

No. Tenting changes keyboard angle; it does not raise the display, clear the laptop’s built-in trackpad or position a pointing device.

What if I have room for only one keyboard half?

Dygma suggests placing the pointing device where the missing half would sit as one possible layout. Treat it as a suggestion and check that the location is comfortable and leaves the screen and trackpad accessible.

Will a keyboard with an integrated trackpad fit my laptop setup?

Not necessarily. Check its actual dimensions, pointing-device placement and compatibility with the laptop, and confirm that the laptop’s own trackpad remains accessible if you use it.

The Bottom Line

Position the laptop for a comfortable, unobstructed view first. Then place the split halves around it, keeping the built-in trackpad reachable if you use it and putting any separate pointing device at keyboard height within comfortable reach. Shoulder width is a starting reference, not a rule; tenting is an angle adjustment, not a fix for screen or trackpad obstruction.
