The most reliable 2026 setup is a Fabric server running Minecraft 1.21.1 with Java 21. Install Cobblemon and Fabric API in the server’s mods folder, start the server once so it creates its configuration, stop it before changing settings, and restart after every mod or configuration change. Every player must use the same Minecraft, Fabric, Cobblemon, and add-on versions as the server.
This guide covers both the ready-made server-pack route and a manual installation, then explains memory planning, configuration, player onboarding, whitelisting, updates, and the failures that most often prevent a connection.

What you need before installing
Decide first whether this will be a private server for a few friends or a continuously available community server. A home computer avoids a recurring hosting bill but requires port forwarding, a machine that stays powered on, and a stable upload connection. Rented Minecraft hosting normally provides a control panel, backups and an always-on machine, but you pay for an allocated memory plan and have less control over the underlying operating system.
Use a compatible software stack

Version numbers are volatile. Before downloading, check the current Cobblemon release, its supported Minecraft version, the matching Fabric loader, and the Java requirement. Pick one exact combination and record it in a text file so every player installs the same files.

Prepare the server folder
- Create a dedicated folder such as
CobblemonServer, not a folder containing unrelated worlds. - Give the account that runs Minecraft read and write permission to that folder.
- Plan regular copies of the world folder,
configfolder, server properties and whitelist files. Stop the server before copying a live world. - Keep several gigabytes free beyond the Java heap for the operating system, logs, the control panel, backups and file cache.
Choose a server-pack or manual installation
Option A: use the Cobblemon server pack
The Cobblemon Official Modpack [Fabric] listing on CurseForge includes a server-pack download. A commonly documented workflow is to select the server-pack icon beside the listing’s Install control, download the archive, extract it into your dedicated server folder and run the supplied start file. That package is intended to fetch or include the Fabric server, Cobblemon, required files and the mod set used by the pack.
- Download the server pack that matches your chosen Minecraft and Cobblemon versions.
- Extract every file into the empty server folder. Do not leave the files inside a second nested directory if the start script expects to run from the top level.
- Open the supplied start script once. If it creates an EULA file, stop when it exits and continue with the EULA step below.
- Review the generated files and confirm that a
modsfolder exists before allowing players to connect.
This route is quickest and reduces the chance of omitting a dependency, but it gives you the pack’s complete mod list. Adding or removing individual mods later can create a different client pack, so document every change.
Option B: install Fabric and mods manually
- Download the Fabric installer for the Minecraft version you selected and choose the server installation.
- Point the installer at the dedicated server folder and let it create the Fabric server launcher and supporting files.
- Download the Cobblemon build for that Minecraft version and the matching Fabric API build. Put both files directly in
mods; do not unzip mod.jarfiles. - Run the Fabric server once. It will create
eula.txtand other runtime files, then stop if the EULA has not been accepted. - Open
eula.txt, change the setting toeula=trueonly if you accept Mojang’s EULA, save it, and start the server again. - Watch the console until it reports that the server is ready. Stop it cleanly before editing configuration.
Manual installation gives precise control over the mod list and is easier to troubleshoot one dependency at a time. The trade-off is that you are responsible for matching every library, loader and Minecraft version yourself.
Start the server and verify the first run
Use the server’s supplied start script or the command shown by the Fabric installer. If you maintain your own script, adjust its Java memory options rather than launching a random copy of Java from a desktop shortcut. A typical heap option is written as -Xmx6G; the number should match the memory plan you selected, leaving room for the operating system.

- Launch the server from its own folder so relative paths resolve correctly.
- Accept the EULA in
eula.txtif the first launch created it. - Wait for the ready message and check that Cobblemon and Fabric API appear in the startup log without a dependency or version error.
- Stop with the console’s normal stop command. Avoid killing the process while the world is saving.
- Inspect the folder. A successful first Cobblemon run should have created
config/cobblemon/main.json.
If the server stops before creating that file, solve the startup error first. Editing a configuration that has not been generated cannot fix a loader, Java or missing-mod failure.
Install or add Cobblemon to an existing Fabric server
You can add Cobblemon to a server that already runs Fabric instead of creating a new world. Make a full backup before changing the mod set.

- Install or update Fabric through the host control panel if the server is rented, or replace the local launcher only after recording the current version if you self-host.
- Upload the matching Cobblemon file and Fabric API file to
mods. - Check every additional mod for the same Minecraft version and loader. A Forge-only or NeoForge-only file is not interchangeable with a Fabric file.
- Start once, read the log for dependency errors, then stop and back up the generated configuration and world before inviting players.
- Have every player update their client to exactly the same mod set before the next connection attempt.
Configure Cobblemon safely
Cobblemon writes its server configuration to config/cobblemon/main.json on the first successful start. Stop the server before editing this file. Editing while Java is running can be overwritten when the process exits, and malformed JSON can prevent the next startup.

Preserve the JSON types when editing: a decimal value must remain a number, and a Boolean must remain true or false, not a quoted word. Change one setting at a time, save a backup of the original file, start the server, and read the log before changing anything else.

Use the in-game configuration screen when available
Release notes for Cobblemon 1.7.0 describe an in-game configuration screen. Availability and the settings exposed can depend on the installed release and permissions. If your build provides the screen, it is safer for supported options because it can write valid values for you. Some settings still require a restart; make the change, stop and restart the server, and test spawning in a controlled area.
No complete list of keys applies to every release. Do not copy a configuration from a different Minecraft or Cobblemon version without checking the keys that your own first run generated.
How much RAM does a Cobblemon server need?
Published memory recommendations vary because they are hosting-company estimates rather than independent benchmarks. Player count, view distance, exploration, add-ons, chunk generation and backup software can all change the result. Treat the following figures as starting points, not guarantees.

For a small private server, start with the lower end that leaves comfortable headroom and monitor the console. If the process reports out-of-memory errors or the host panel shows the heap pinned near its limit, stop the server and increase -Xmx within the plan’s allowance. Do not allocate all physical RAM to Java: the operating system, panel, backups and file cache need space too.

Symptoms of insufficient memory
- The process exits with an out-of-memory message.
- Garbage-collection pauses cause long freezes while players explore or generate chunks.
- The host panel repeatedly reaches its memory limit even when the player count is unchanged.
More RAM does not repair a mismatched mod, a slow CPU, a broken world or an incorrectly configured Java runtime. Change one variable at a time and keep a note of the player count and add-ons when evaluating stability.
Prepare players and their clients
Players need a client installation that matches the server’s Minecraft version, Fabric loader, Cobblemon version, Fabric API version and any additional mods. A client can connect to the same server address only after its local mod loader has completed without errors.

The simplest route is to install the same pack through CurseForge, Modrinth or Prism Launcher.
- Have each player launch the pack once in single-player or the launcher test screen. This exposes missing libraries before a connection attempt.
- In Minecraft’s Multiplayer menu, choose Add Server, enter a recognizable name and the server address supplied by the host or your network setup, then save.
- Connect only after the server console shows it is ready and the player’s mod list matches the server list.
Common client mismatch messages
- Incompatible mod or missing mod: compare the file names and versions in both
modsfolders. Remove duplicate older files. - Wrong Minecraft version: create a launcher profile for the exact server version instead of changing only the Fabric loader.
- Wrong loader: install Fabric, not a Forge or NeoForge profile, when the server is Fabric-based.
- Connection works for the owner but not a friend: test the address from outside the host’s local network and check firewall or port-forwarding rules.
Limit access with a whitelist
For a private world, enable the vanilla whitelist so only named accounts can join. One current setup guide recommends it for any server that is not intended to be public. Cobblemon has not published an official confirmation that changes whitelist behavior, so test the vanilla mechanism on your exact server build.
- Start the server and use its whitelist command or the host panel’s whitelist control.
- Add each player’s exact Minecraft account name, including capitalization as required by the server implementation.
- Ask an account that is not on the list to test. It should be denied while an approved account can join.
- Keep an operator account separate from ordinary players and remove operator status when it is no longer needed.
If a listed player is still rejected, check that the account name was entered correctly, the whitelist is enabled, and the server was restarted if the panel requires a reload for the change.

Home computer or rented hosting?

Choose home hosting when the server is occasional and you are comfortable with networking. Choose a rented service when friends need dependable access and you do not want your personal computer running continuously. In either case, keep an independent copy of the world; a provider snapshot is not a substitute for a backup you can restore elsewhere.
Backups, updates and safe changes
Back up before every risky operation
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the world directory,
config/cobblemon/main.json, server properties, whitelist files and the current mod list. - Label the copy with the Minecraft, Fabric and Cobblemon versions.
- Store at least one copy outside the server machine or hosting account.
Update in a controlled order
- Read the new Cobblemon release notes and confirm that it supports your Minecraft version and loader.
- Back up the world and configuration while the server is stopped.
- Update the server’s Fabric loader, Cobblemon, Fabric API and any dependent mods as a matched set.
- Update the players’ pack to the same set before reopening the server.
- Start once with no players, watch the log and test a backup copy of the world if the update includes major changes.
- Only then announce the server as available.
Never overwrite a working mod with a file intended for another Minecraft line just because the filenames look similar. Keep the previous files available so you can roll back if the world or a dependency fails.

Final launch checklist
- Minecraft 1.21.1, Fabric and Java 21 are deliberately selected and recorded.
- Cobblemon and Fabric API are in the server’s
modsfolder and match the loader. - The EULA is accepted and the server reaches its ready state without errors.
config/cobblemon/main.jsonexists and was edited only while the server was stopped.- The Java heap leaves headroom for the operating system, panel, backups and cache.
- Every player has the same launcher profile and mod versions.
- The server address works from the network where players will join.
- The whitelist is enabled and tested if the world is private.
- A restorable backup exists before players begin building.
- Everyone knows which version to use when a future Cobblemon, Fabric or add-on update is released.
With those checks complete, a Fabric-based Cobblemon server is ready for players. Keep the version set fixed until you have a backup and a tested update plan; most connection and startup problems come from changing one part of the stack without changing the matching client or dependency.
