ChatGPT Dot is a software agent inside ChatGPT, not a separate physical device. To create one, use the ChatGPT desktop app or ChatGPT in a desktop browser while signed in to the account and workspace that should own it, then follow the Dots onboarding prompts. If Dots is missing, check your plan, age, region, account, workspace, and rollout status, then open chatgpt.com/dots.
Dot runs on a cloud computer. Access to your local computer, connected apps, and messaging channels is optional and must be enabled separately. Review every permission before approving it, and remember that resetting a dot deletes its conversations, saved memories, and scheduled tasks.
What ChatGPT Dot is—and what “connect it to your account” means
A ChatGPT Dot is an always-on software agent that you create within ChatGPT. Its working computer is cloud-based, so setup does not involve pairing a gadget, plugging in a hub, or installing a special physical accessory. The phrase “connect it to your ChatGPT account” means creating the dot while you are signed in to the correct OpenAI account and workspace.

If you use ChatGPT on another computer or phone later, sign in with the same OpenAI account that owns the subscription and use the same sign-in method. Signing in with a different account, even one using the same email address through a different authentication route, can open a different ChatGPT account.
Dot is not a physical product
The name can sound like a piece of hardware, but there is no device to ship, charge, pair, repair, or replace. Dot is created and managed through ChatGPT. Your ordinary computer is only the screen you use to configure it; Dot’s default working environment is in the cloud.
That distinction matters when planning access. Creating a Dot does not automatically let it see your laptop files, control your desktop, read every service you use, or send messages. Cloud operation, app connections, local-computer access, and messaging are separate capabilities. Grant only the capability needed for the task.
Check eligibility before you start
Dots availability depends on plan, age, region, workspace policy, and the staged rollout. OpenAI’s current help guidance describes the following availability groups:

OpenAI says rollout to an eligible account may take several days. Mobile creation and mobile web creation are not currently supported, so use a desktop computer for the initial setup. Eligibility is not a guarantee that every connection or control will be present: app, messaging, and computer features can have their own plan, region, workspace, and rollout restrictions.
Prepare the account, workspace, and permissions
- Use the intended ChatGPT account. Confirm the account that should own the dot, rather than relying on an email address shown on a receipt or in another service.
- Select the intended workspace. If you belong to more than one workspace, switch to the one where the dot should be created before opening Dots.
- Use a desktop surface. Have either the ChatGPT desktop app or ChatGPT in a desktop browser ready. A phone can be used for ordinary account access, but not for creating a dot through the currently supported setup flow.
- Decide whether you need connections. Apps, messaging channels, and local-computer access are optional. You can create a dot first and connect these later.
- Plan a permission review. Read the requested app scopes and the local-computer confirmation before accepting them. Give a connection only the access needed for the task.
Keep the account and workspace check separate from the app-account check. You may create a Dot in the right ChatGPT workspace but connect, for example, the wrong account for a supported service. Both selections have to be correct for the Dot to find the information you expect.
Create a dot on a desktop computer
- Open ChatGPT on desktop. Launch the ChatGPT desktop app or visit ChatGPT in a desktop browser. Sign in with the account and sign-in method that you intend to use for the dot.
- Choose the correct workspace. If the account has personal and organization workspaces, verify the active workspace before continuing.
- Open Dots. Use the Dots entry in the desktop interface, or go directly to https://chatgpt.com/dots. If the page or entry is absent, do not create a second account just to test it; work through the eligibility checks in the troubleshooting section below.
- Complete onboarding. Follow the prompts shown for your account. The setup flow lets you name the dot.
- Confirm the handle. A dot initially uses the default handle
@yourname-dot. Giving it a name changes the handle to the pattern@yourname-agentname. - Open the dot profile. After creation, inspect the profile and available settings. The controls shown can vary by plan, region, workspace, and enabled connections.
Creation itself does not grant access to your local computer or every service in your account. Those are separate decisions made from the dot profile or the relevant connection interface.

What to review immediately after creation
Before assigning a consequential task, open the dot profile and note its name, handle, active workspace, memory behavior, connected apps, computer permissions, and action-approval rules. This quick inventory prevents a common mistake: assuming that because a Dot exists, all optional capabilities are already active.
Start with a low-risk request that does not require sending a message, changing a file, or making an irreversible decision. Inspect the result and check important details yourself. Once you understand which context and connections the Dot can use, decide whether broader automation is appropriate.

Connect apps safely
Choose the app account that contains the needed information
From the dot profile, select an available app and begin its connection flow. Sign in to the app account that contains the files, messages, calendar data, or other information the dot actually needs. Connecting the wrong account can look like a successful setup while leaving the dot unable to find the expected data.
Review the permission request
Read the requested permissions before approving. Availability and permission scope can depend on your ChatGPT plan, region, account, supported surface, and workspace policy. If the requested action is broader than the task requires, cancel and reassess rather than approving automatically.

OpenAI states that connected-app permissions are shared across dots, ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex within the permissions you granted. Disconnecting an app stops the connection, but it does not erase information the dot already obtained from that app. Treat a connection as an account-level permission decision, not merely a setting for one conversation.
Reconnect an expired authorization
If a connected app stops working, check that the supported app or plugin is installed, that it is connected to the intended account, and that its granted permissions include the action you are asking for. If authorization expired, use the app’s connection control to authorize it again. Reconnecting should not be confused with deleting data the dot previously retrieved.
When an app is unavailable
An absent app is not necessarily a technical failure. Check the plan, region, workspace, account, and whether you are using a supported desktop or web surface. Some integrations can be available to one workspace but not another, or to one account while rollout is still pending for another.
Connect messaging channels when they are offered
Messaging connections are configured from the ChatGPT desktop app and are not guaranteed to appear for every account. OpenAI’s setup guidance describes texting as a limited Pro beta in the United States. It is not available to Business or Enterprise workspaces and may not be available to every Pro user. Messaging and data charges may apply.

Where a messaging channel such as Slack or texting is offered, read the enablement notice and the applicable OpenAI terms and privacy policy. Confirm the destination account or phone details, the people or channels that could receive messages, and any automatic-action rules before enabling it. If the channel is absent, that can reflect plan, region, workspace, or rollout limits rather than a setup error.
Because a message leaves ChatGPT and reaches another service, use a conservative approval mode at first. Have Dot ask before sending or require pre-approval until you have verified the recipient, wording, and timing behavior.
Allow Dot to use a local computer
Local access is optional. A dot normally works on its cloud computer; it can use a particular local computer only after you explicitly allow that computer from the ChatGPT desktop app.

- Install or open the ChatGPT desktop app on the computer you want the dot to use.
- Keep that computer connected to the internet and leave ChatGPT open while local access is needed.
- Open the dot profile and find Computers.
- Select Allow access.
- Read the confirmation describing local access, then confirm again if you want to proceed.
- When local access is no longer appropriate, return to the same control and revoke it.
Allowing one computer does not automatically authorize every computer you own. Conversely, connecting a computer to Codex or enabling Work Sync does not itself give Dot local-computer access; the Dot permission must be granted explicitly in the desktop app.
Keep the app open and the computer online for as long as the local capability is needed. If you close ChatGPT, take the computer offline, or let it sleep, Dot may not be able to use that computer. Revoking access later is a separate action from resetting the Dot and does not by itself delete Dot conversations or memories.
Control memory, automation, and deletion
Memory and conversation context
Dot can receive ChatGPT memories and recent conversation context, and dot conversations can contribute to ChatGPT memory. Turning Memory off stops further sharing, but it does not delete information the dot already received. Review existing memory separately if you need to remove previously stored information.
Pause a dot
You can pause a dot when you want its activity to stop temporarily without deleting its stored conversations, memories, or scheduled tasks. Use pause when the concern is temporary availability rather than permanent removal.
Set approval rules for actions
Dot controls can let you decide whether certain actions happen automatically, only when pre-approved, after the dot asks you, or after the task is handed off to you. Choose the least automatic mode that fits the risk of the task. Even when an action is automated, review the dot’s work and check important details before relying on the result.
Reset and permanently remove dot data
Use Reset in the dot profile when you want to delete the dot’s conversations, saved memories, and scheduled tasks. Read the deletion notice before confirming. Reset is different from pausing, disconnecting an app, or turning Memory off: those controls do not perform the same deletion.
Before resetting, save anything you legitimately need and confirm that deletion is really the intended outcome. Disconnecting an app will not remove information Dot already obtained from it, while resetting addresses the Dot’s conversations, saved memories, and scheduled tasks. These controls solve different problems and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Access the same dot from another device
To use the ChatGPT account on another device, sign in to ChatGPT with the same account that owns the subscription and the same sign-in method used originally. Then select the relevant workspace if your account belongs to more than one.
Initial dot creation remains a desktop-only flow under the current guidance. Mobile web and mobile apps may therefore let you access ChatGPT after setup without offering the controls needed to create a new dot. If a connection or computer control is not visible on mobile, return to the desktop app or desktop web surface where that control is supported.

If an account appears to have lost a Dot after you change devices, first check the sign-in method and workspace. A different authentication route or organization workspace can make the interface look like a new account even when the email address seems familiar.
Troubleshoot a missing Dots entry
1. Verify the account and workspace
Check the signed-in account, authentication method, and active workspace. A personal workspace and an organization workspace can have different feature access. If you are in the wrong one, switch workspaces and revisit Dots.
2. Check plan, age, and region
Compare your account with the eligibility conditions above. Pro access is described for people over 18 outside the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK; Business Premium access depends on supported regions; and Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare beta access requires administrator enablement.
3. Open the direct page
Visit chatgpt.com/dots from a desktop browser. If the page still does not show Dots, the account may not yet be included in the staged rollout. OpenAI notes that an eligible account can take several days to receive access.

For an Enterprise, Edu, or Healthcare workspace, ask the administrator whether the beta has been enabled. Individual troubleshooting cannot override a workspace-level switch.
5. Do not create duplicate accounts as a test
Creating another account can put the Dot, subscription, and workspace in different places and make later troubleshooting harder. Confirm the existing account and sign-in method first, then wait for rollout or ask the workspace administrator about access.
Troubleshoot app and authorization failures
- The app opens but has no useful data: verify that the connected account is the one containing the information, and confirm that the granted permissions cover the requested action.
- An app worked previously and now fails: check whether authorization expired, then reconnect it through the supported app-account control.
- The expected app is not listed: check plan, region, workspace, account, and whether you are using a supported desktop or web surface. Not every integration is available to every user.
- You disconnected an app but still see old information: disconnection does not erase information Dot already obtained. Use the appropriate conversation, memory, or reset controls for deletion.
- The connection succeeds but the wrong data appears: disconnect or correct the app account, then verify the permissions and account identity before trying the task again.
Troubleshoot local-computer access
- Dot says it cannot use the computer: open the ChatGPT desktop app on that specific computer and confirm that Allow access is enabled in the dot profile under Computers.
- Access was enabled but the computer appears unavailable: keep the computer online and leave ChatGPT open. A sleeping, offline, or closed app can prevent the connection from working.
- You connected the computer to another OpenAI tool: that does not grant Dot access. Enable Dot’s local-computer permission separately.
- You no longer want local access: revoke it from the same Computers control. Revoking access is separate from resetting the dot.
- You expected mobile to authorize the computer: return to the desktop app on the computer being shared. Mobile creation and mobile web setup are not currently supported.
A safe first-run checklist
After onboarding, use this checklist before giving Dot a consequential task:
- Confirm the dot name, handle, account, and workspace.
- Check which apps are connected and read their current permissions.
- Confirm whether Memory is on and understand that turning it off does not erase previously received information.
- Verify whether local-computer access is off or intentionally allowed on a named computer.
- Choose approval rules appropriate to the actions Dot may take.
- Review any connected messaging channel, its destination, and possible data charges.
- Run a low-risk task first, inspect the result, and verify important details yourself.
This approach keeps account selection, app authorization, local access, and automation as separate decisions. You can change one without granting every other capability.

Using the least destructive control that solves the problem reduces accidental loss. For example, revoke a computer when the computer should no longer be available; reserve Reset for when the Dot’s stored data and scheduled work should be deleted.
