For the best result, connect the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar to your television’s HDMI eARC port with the included HDMI cable, finish the guided setup in the Bose app, and run CustomTune in the room where you will watch. Keep the bar’s front and top unobstructed. The soundbar can decode Dolby Atmos by itself; add a compatible Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer for stronger bass or a pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers for physical surround coverage, then run CustomTune again after adding the subwoofer.

What you need before connecting the soundbar

Have the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar, its included HDMI cable, your television, and a phone or tablet with the Bose app ready. Place the soundbar near the TV before beginning so the calibration reflects its final position. If your TV has no ARC or eARC HDMI port, you may need an optical connection; otherwise, HDMI is the better starting point.

  • Find the HDMI port on the TV labeled eARC or ARC. Labels are usually printed next to the socket, but the exact wording varies by television.
  • Make sure the soundbar’s front and top will remain clear after installation. Its forward- and upward-projecting drivers need an unobstructed path.
  • Keep the TV manual available. Audio-output, CEC, Dolby, and HDMI settings differ by make and model, so no single menu path applies to every television.

Choose the right TV connection

HDMI eARC: the preferred connection

Connect one end of the included HDMI cable to the TV port marked HDMI eARC and the other end to the soundbar’s HDMI eARC connection. eARC is preferred because it can carry higher-bandwidth and lossless audio formats that ordinary ARC cannot. It also gives the TV a direct route for compatible surround formats instead of relying on an optical link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn off the TV and soundbar or leave them in standby.
  2. Plug the HDMI cable into the television’s eARC socket, not a regular HDMI input.
  3. Connect the other end to the soundbar’s HDMI eARC port.
  4. Turn on the TV and soundbar, then continue with Bose app setup.

The TV still controls which formats it outputs. If an eARC television offers a choice such as PCM, bitstream, or pass-through, consult that model’s manual and use the setting recommended for an external sound system. Menu names and available options are not universal.

HDMI ARC: a workable fallback

If the TV has HDMI ARC but not eARC, use the ARC-labeled port with the same HDMI cable. The soundbar supports ARC, but Bose notes that ARC does not support lossless formats and that Dolby audio support over ARC varies by TV make and model. In practice, an ARC connection can work well for many programs, yet the television may limit the format sent to the soundbar.

After connecting ARC, select the television’s external-audio or receiver output in its sound settings. Enable the TV’s HDMI-device-control feature if the manual requires it for audio switching or volume control; manufacturers use different names for that function. Test both a regular TV channel and a movie source before changing other settings.

Optical: use only when ARC/eARC is unavailable

An optical cable is a fallback for a television without an ARC or eARC port. Bose describes optical as an alternative connection, not the preferred route. Optical has less audio-format flexibility than eARC, and the exact Dolby options depend on the TV and source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect an optical cable from the TV’s optical audio output to the soundbar’s optical input.
  2. Remove any protective caps from the cable ends before inserting them.
  3. Set the TV’s audio output to optical or external speakers according to its manual.
  4. Use the TV’s remote to select the appropriate audio output and test sound.

The soundbar includes an HDMI cable, so do not buy an optical cable unless your television lacks ARC and eARC or your installation specifically requires optical.

Complete guided setup in the Bose app

Once the cable is connected, use the Bose app to add and configure the soundbar. The app supplies the network and device prompts, then confirms the TV connection.

  1. Install or open the Bose app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Follow the prompt to add a new product and select the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar when it appears.
  3. Allow the app to guide the soundbar onto your home network and complete device configuration.
  4. When prompted, confirm that the soundbar is connected to the television.
  5. Finish the setup before moving on to room calibration.

Keep the phone close to the soundbar during setup. If the app cannot complete a step, verify that the HDMI plug is fully seated, the TV is on the ARC/eARC port, and the phone is connected to the intended home network. The exact app screens can change, so follow the labels shown in your current version rather than relying on a memorized path.

Run CustomTune for your room

CustomTune calibrates the soundbar for the room using the phone’s microphone as a reference. Bose describes the technology as based on ADAPTiQ. Run it after the soundbar is in its permanent position and the main seating area is arranged as you normally use it.

Prepare for calibration

  • Clear the soundbar’s front and top so the test sound is not blocked.
  • Place the phone where the app instructs, with its microphone uncovered.
  • Silence nearby conversations and avoid moving around during the measurements.
  • Leave furniture, rugs, and other normal room features in place; calibrating an empty or rearranged room can make the result less representative of everyday listening.

Run the measurement

  1. Open the soundbar’s controls in the Bose app.
  2. Choose the CustomTune or room-calibration option.
  3. Follow the app’s prompts for holding or placing the phone.
  4. Remain quiet while the soundbar plays its test signals and the phone records the room response.
  5. Complete every position or confirmation requested by the app, then save the result.

CustomTune is intended to adapt the soundbar to the listening space; it is not a substitute for physically clearing the drivers or correcting a wrong TV connection. If you later add a compatible Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer, Bose recommends running CustomTune again so the calibration includes the new bass source.

Place the soundbar so its drivers can work

Keep the front and top open

The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar uses forward-projecting and upward-projecting drivers. Do not place objects, a shelf lip, or a television stand directly in front of or above the bar where they can block those drivers. A blocked top can interfere with the intended height effect, while a blocked front can reduce clarity and direct sound.

Position it below the TV when possible

Bose advises against mounting the soundbar above the TV. Positioning it below the screen generally keeps the sound closer to the picture and leaves the upward-firing drivers aimed at the ceiling. If the television stand is shallow or enclosed, check that the bar is not pushed into a recess that surrounds its front or top.

Keep the listening layout consistent

Use the seat you normally occupy as the primary listening position during CustomTune. Large changes after calibration—moving the sofa, rotating the bar, or placing it inside a cabinet—can make the calibration less representative. Re-run CustomTune after substantial placement changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the television to send audio to the bar

After app setup, open the TV’s sound or audio-output menu and select the external HDMI audio system connected to ARC/eARC. The exact label may be “Receiver,” “External speakers,” “HDMI sound system,” or another manufacturer-specific term. Use the TV manual for the precise path.

If the TV offers a setting for HDMI audio format, choose the option intended for an external soundbar or receiver. Some televisions expose separate controls for eARC, digital audio output, pass-through, and CEC. Their behavior differs by model, and the available Dolby choices depend on the TV’s hardware and firmware. Do not assume that a setting name or a particular format option from one brand applies to another.

Test the connection in this order:

  1. Play ordinary TV audio and confirm that sound comes from the soundbar rather than the TV speakers.
  2. Raise and lower the volume with the TV remote to verify that control is working through the HDMI link.
  3. Play a movie or other content with a surround soundtrack and check that the soundbar receives it as expected.
  4. If you changed an audio-format setting, test again after saving it; some TVs apply the change only after restarting playback.

Choose the configuration that matches your room

The soundbar is a complete starting point, and the accessories are optional expansions. Bose states that the bar supports Dolby Atmos decoding as a standalone product. Additional hardware changes the physical coverage and low-frequency capability rather than serving as a prerequisite for Atmos decoding.

Configuration What it adds Choose it when Placement considerations
Soundbar alone Dolby Atmos decoding from the bar’s forward- and upward-projecting drivers, including virtualized surround placement You want a simple installation with no separate bass or rear speakers Keep the front and top clear; place the bar below the TV when possible
Soundbar plus Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer Additional low-frequency output for bass-heavy movie effects and music You want more physical bass impact without adding rear speakers Place the subwoofer where its connection and power requirements are satisfied, then run CustomTune again
Soundbar plus a pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers Physical surround speakers behind or beside the seating area for more wraparound coverage You want sound coming from the sides or rear, not only from the soundbar Use a matched pair and leave space for the speakers around the listening area
Soundbar, Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer, and a pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers Bass expansion plus physical surround coverage You have room for additional speakers and want the most expansive compatible Lifestyle Collection arrangement Plan power, wireless placement, and clear speaker locations before calibration

Bose describes a full Lifestyle Collection arrangement with compatible surround speakers and subwoofers as supporting up to 7.1.4-channel audio. That is a manufacturer-described system capability, not an independent measurement of performance, and it applies to the compatible multi-speaker setup rather than the soundbar by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you need a subwoofer?

No. The soundbar can operate and decode Dolby Atmos without a subwoofer. Add the compatible Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer if you specifically want stronger low-frequency impact or a separate bass source. Because adding it changes the system, run CustomTune again afterward.

Do you need surround speakers?

No. A pair of compatible Lifestyle Ultra Speakers is optional and is intended for listeners who want physical side or rear coverage. The compatible surround option identified by Bose is the Lifestyle Ultra Speaker pair. Older Bose Surround Speakers and Bose Surround Speakers 700 are not compatible with this soundbar, so do not assume that an older surround set will pair with it.

Troubleshoot the most common setup problems

No sound from the soundbar

  1. Check that the HDMI cable is plugged into the TV’s ARC or eARC port, not an ordinary HDMI input.
  2. Confirm the soundbar is powered and selected in the Bose app.
  3. Open the TV’s audio-output menu and select the external HDMI sound system.
  4. Check whether the TV requires CEC or another HDMI-device-control setting for audio switching.
  5. Restart the TV and soundbar, then test again.

If the TV still sends sound to its own speakers, consult that television’s manual. CEC names, menu locations, and HDMI behavior vary by model, so a universal sequence cannot be guaranteed.

Sound works, but the format is limited

First identify whether the connection is eARC, ARC, or optical. ARC does not support lossless formats, and Dolby support over ARC depends on the TV. Optical is a fallback with its own format limits. If the TV supports eARC, move the cable to that port and review the television’s eARC and digital-audio-output settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The height or surround effect seems weak

  • Make sure nothing is covering the soundbar’s top or front.
  • Check that the bar is not mounted above the TV, which Bose advises against.
  • Run CustomTune from the normal listening position.
  • Verify that the source is actually providing a surround or Atmos soundtrack; the soundbar cannot create the source’s missing channels.

Calibration fails or sounds wrong after rearranging the room

Repeat CustomTune with the phone microphone uncovered and the room quiet. Return the soundbar and seating to their normal positions before measuring. If you have added the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer, run the calibration again after the subwoofer is connected.

An older Bose surround set will not connect

Bose identifies older Bose Surround Speakers and Bose Surround Speakers 700 as incompatible. Use the Lifestyle Ultra Speakers specified for this soundbar rather than trying to force-pair an earlier generation.

A reliable setup order for movie night

Use this sequence whenever you install the system or move it to another room:

  1. Place the soundbar below the TV with its front and top unobstructed.
  2. Connect the included HDMI cable to the TV’s eARC port. Use ARC only when eARC is unavailable; use optical only when neither HDMI return-audio port exists.
  3. Complete the Bose app’s network and device setup.
  4. Select the TV’s external HDMI audio output and confirm basic TV sound.
  5. Run CustomTune with the phone and seating positioned as the room is normally used.
  6. Play a familiar TV program, then a movie, and verify dialogue, volume control, and surround playback.
  7. Add a Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer or a pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers only if you want the corresponding bass or physical-surround improvement.
  8. Run CustomTune again after adding the subwoofer or making a major placement change.
