To connect a Bluetooth game controller to an Android tablet, put the controller into pairing mode, then open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device and select the controller. Once Android reports that it is connected, check the available controller settings and test it in the game you intend to play. Pairing creates the Bluetooth connection, but it does not guarantee that every game supports controller input or that every controller works with every tablet.

What you need before pairing

The setup is straightforward, but a few compatibility checks prevent most problems. You need an Android tablet with Bluetooth enabled, a controller that can operate as a Bluetooth gamepad, and a game that accepts external controller input. Keep the controller’s manual nearby because the button combination used to enter pairing mode is specific to the controller.

  • Android tablet: The labels and location of Bluetooth settings can vary by manufacturer and Android version.
  • Bluetooth controller: It must be switched on and placed in discoverable pairing mode, not merely powered on.
  • Target game: The game must implement controller support. Android cannot make a game accept gamepad commands if the game does not provide that support.
  • Power: Charge the controller sufficiently for pairing and testing. If it shuts down during setup, Android may show an incomplete or failed connection.

Google Android Help describes both Bluetooth and wired controller connections as supported options. Its instructions are general rather than a certification list for particular controller models or games, so compatibility still needs to be checked for your own hardware and software.

Pair the controller with your Android tablet

1. Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode

Turn on the controller and use the pairing procedure in its manual. There is no universal button combination: one controller may use a dedicated Bluetooth button, while another may require holding a combination of buttons for several seconds. A flashing status light often indicates that the controller is discoverable, but the exact light pattern is controller-specific.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Do not assume that a controller is ready to pair just because it is powered on. If it is still connected to another phone, tablet, console or computer, it may need to be disconnected, switched to a different mode, or reset according to its manual before it will appear to Android.

2. Open Android’s pairing screen

  1. Open the tablet’s Settings app.
  2. Choose Connected devices.
  3. Tap Pair new device.
  4. Wait for the controller to appear under available devices.

This is the documented Android route, but manufacturers can rename menus or place Bluetooth under a slightly different heading. If you do not see Connected devices, use the Settings search field for Bluetooth, pair new device or connected devices.

3. Select the controller

Tap the controller’s name in the list of available Bluetooth devices. Android may display a pairing confirmation or request a code; follow the prompt shown on the tablet. Wait for the status to change from pairing or connecting to Connected.

If several accessories are nearby, identify the controller by its exact device name from the controller manual or packaging. Selecting the wrong accessory can create a successful Bluetooth connection that has nothing to do with the gamepad you are trying to use.

4. Confirm and reconnect later

After the first pairing, Android normally saves the controller. With Bluetooth enabled, open the tablet’s saved-device list and select the controller when you want to reconnect. You generally do not need to repeat the initial pairing process every time, although the controller may need to be switched on or placed in its normal reconnect mode.

Pairing and connection are separate states. A controller can be saved as a paired device but currently disconnected, especially when it is powered off or connected to another device. Check the status in Android before launching a game.

Check Android’s controller settings

For a connected Bluetooth controller, Android Help directs users to Settings > Connected devices > [controller] > Game Controller settings. The exact menu can vary by tablet and Android build, and the option may not be available on every device.

Button and joystick assignments

Where supported, Android lets you swap button assignments and swap the left and right joystick assignments. This can help when a game’s expected layout differs from the controller’s default layout, or when a player needs a different physical arrangement.

  • Open the connected controller’s device page.
  • Choose Game Controller settings, if the option is shown.
  • Review the available button or joystick assignment controls.
  • Save the arrangement, then test it in the game.

These settings are not a universal remapping layer for every game. A game can still impose its own controls, ignore unsupported inputs, or use a layout that differs from Android’s labels. Treat Android’s mapping options as an available device feature, not a promise that every title can be fully customized.

Test the controller in the game

Start the game only after Android shows the controller as connected. Look in the game’s Settings, Controls, Input or Accessibility menus for a controller option. Some games recognize a gamepad immediately; others require you to enable controller input or select a control scheme.

  1. Connect the controller in Android.
  2. Launch the intended game.
  3. Open the game’s control or input settings if no buttons respond.
  4. Press several buttons and move both sticks to verify navigation, actions and camera movement.
  5. Confirm that the button prompts shown by the game match the physical buttons you expect.

Test in the actual game you plan to play rather than relying only on the Bluetooth status. A successful pairing proves that the tablet and controller established a wireless link; it does not prove that the game accepts that controller’s input protocol. Consult the game’s own support information when input remains unavailable.

Why a paired controller may not work in a game

The game does not support controllers

Android’s Bluetooth connection is independent of a game’s input implementation. If the game was designed only for touch controls, the controller can show as connected while every button press is ignored. There is no universal Android setting that adds native gamepad support to a game that lacks it.

The controller or tablet is not supported

Games and tablets can support different ranges of controllers. A particular controller may pair successfully but expose inputs in a way the game does not recognize. Conversely, a game may support controllers generally but not the combination of your tablet, Android build and controller.

The game is using a different layout

Inputs may be working even when the on-screen prompts appear unfamiliar. Check the game’s control settings and Android’s available mapping settings. If the game has no remapping option and Android does not expose the needed assignment, the mismatch may be a limitation of that combination.

The controller connected to another device

A controller that automatically reconnects to a console, phone or computer may disappear from the tablet’s available-device list or connect briefly before dropping. Turn off Bluetooth on the other device or follow the controller manual’s procedure for selecting a new host, then repeat Android’s pairing flow.

Troubleshoot pairing problems

The controller does not appear in “Pair new device”

  • Confirm that the controller is powered on and genuinely in Bluetooth pairing mode.
  • Move the controller near the tablet while pairing and wait for the available-device list to refresh.
  • Exit pairing mode and enter it again using the controller’s manual.
  • Check whether it is already connected to another device and disconnect it there.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and on from Android Settings, then reopen Pair new device.
  • If the controller has a model-specific reset procedure, use the manual. Android’s general help does not define a universal controller reset sequence.

Do not infer that a controller is incompatible solely because it was absent on the first scan. Pairing mode often times out, and a controller that has left discoverable mode will not remain visible.

The controller was paired before but will not reconnect

Open Android’s saved Bluetooth devices and select the controller while Bluetooth is on. If it remains unavailable, use the device settings to forget the saved pairing and start over:

  1. Open Settings > Connected devices.
  2. Open the saved controller’s settings.
  3. Choose the option to forget or remove the device.
  4. Put the controller back into pairing mode.
  5. Return to Pair new device and select it again.

Forgetting a device removes Android’s saved relationship; it does not replace the controller’s own reset procedure. If the controller still refuses to appear, follow its manual for clearing host connections or restoring pairing mode.

Android says connected, but no game input is detected

  • Verify that the game explicitly supports external controllers.
  • Check the game’s input or control menu for an enable switch or control profile.
  • Open Android’s controller page and review Game Controller settings, if available.
  • Test more than one button and both joysticks; a single unresponsive control can be a game-layout issue rather than a failed Bluetooth link.
  • Close and reopen the game after connecting the controller. Some games inspect available inputs only when they start.
  • Check the controller and tablet compatibility information supplied by their manufacturers.

There is no single Android fix for every “connected but ignored” case. The deciding factor is whether the game, tablet and controller support the same input path.

The connection drops during play

First confirm that the controller has adequate charge and is not switching back to another paired device. Reconnect it from Android’s saved-device list, then test again. If the problem persists, consult the controller manual and the tablet manufacturer’s Bluetooth guidance; the general Android setup instructions do not identify a universal cause or repair for every disconnection.

Bluetooth versus a wired controller

Android Help states that a game controller can connect through either Bluetooth or a wired connection. A wired setup avoids wireless pairing, but it introduces a cable and possible adapter requirements.

Consideration Bluetooth connection Wired connection
Initial setup Put the controller in pairing mode, then select it under Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device. Connect the controller with a compatible cable; the required connector and any adapter depend on the tablet and controller ports.
Later sessions Choose the saved controller from Android’s Bluetooth devices when it is not automatically reconnected. Reconnect the cable whenever you want to play; no Bluetooth pairing step is needed.
Port requirements The tablet needs Bluetooth and the controller must support Bluetooth gamepad operation. The tablet and controller must accept the same cable or a compatible adapter. No universal cable is specified by Android Help.
Compatibility question Confirm Android, game and controller support for the wireless combination. Confirm the tablet port, controller port and game support for a wired gamepad.
Customization Android may expose button and left/right joystick assignment options in the controller settings. Available mapping and game support still depend on the tablet, controller and game; the cable itself does not add remapping features.

Choose Bluetooth when avoiding a cable is more important and your controller is confirmed to work with the tablet and game. Choose wired play when the ports and cable are known to be compatible and you prefer to bypass wireless pairing. Neither route guarantees support in a game that does not accept controllers.

  • Android compatibility: Check that the controller identifies Android tablets or Android gamepad input as supported.
  • Game compatibility: Confirm support in the specific games you intend to play. General controller compatibility does not certify every title.
  • Pairing procedure: Make sure the manual explains how to enter pairing mode, switch hosts and clear an old connection.
  • Mapping options: If button or joystick reassignment matters, check whether the controller and Android build expose those functions.
  • Tablet ports: For wired play, match the controller’s connector to the tablet’s port and verify whether an adapter is required.
  • Connection preference: Bluetooth removes the cable from your hands, while wired play removes the Bluetooth pairing step.

Do not treat a product description that says “works with Android” as proof that a particular game will recognize every button. The relevant compatibility chain is tablet, Android version, controller mode and game.

Android version and menu differences

The documented path uses Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, but Android interfaces are not identical across tablets. Manufacturer software can rename sections, move Bluetooth controls or provide a separate accessories page. Use Settings search when the labels do not match.

Some Bluetooth guidance steps apply only to Android 15 and supported hardware. Do not assume that an Android 15-specific instruction, menu or feature exists on an older tablet or on hardware that does not support it. When a menu is absent, check the tablet manufacturer’s current documentation rather than repeatedly searching for an option that the device does not provide.

Quick setup checklist

  • Read the controller manual’s pairing instructions.
  • Charge the controller and switch it on.
  • Enter Bluetooth pairing mode, not just normal play mode.
  • On the tablet, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device.
  • Select the controller and complete any Android prompt.
  • Confirm that Android displays it as connected.
  • Open Settings > Connected devices > [controller] > Game Controller settings if that option is available.
  • Adjust button or joystick assignments only if needed.
  • Launch a game that explicitly supports controllers and test its controls.
  • If pairing fails, forget the saved device and pair again; use the controller manual for model-specific resets.

What successful setup looks like

A successful setup has three separate confirmations: Android discovers and pairs with the controller, Android shows the controller as connected, and the intended game responds to its inputs. If any one of these stages fails, troubleshoot that stage instead of assuming the entire controller is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a wireless setup, the essential Android sequence is pairing mode on the controller followed by Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device on the tablet. Afterward, use the controller’s Android settings where available, and verify support in the game itself. A compatible wired cable is the alternative when the tablet and controller ports support it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect any Bluetooth controller to an Android tablet?

Not necessarily. The controller, tablet, Android version and game must support a compatible gamepad input path. A Bluetooth pairing connection alone does not certify game compatibility.

Do I have to pair the controller every time I play?

Usually no. Android saves a paired controller, and you can select it from saved Bluetooth devices when Bluetooth is on. You may need to reconnect manually if the controller is off or has connected to another device.

What if my tablet uses different menu names?

Search Settings for Bluetooth, connected devices or pair new device. Manufacturer software can rename or relocate the documented Android menus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a cable instead of Bluetooth?

Yes, Android supports a wired controller connection when the controller and tablet accept a compatible cable or adapter. The required connector is device-specific.
