To set up a Blink camera, install the current Blink app, create or sign in to your Blink account, connect any required Sync Module to your 2.4 GHz home Wi-Fi, then add the camera by scanning its QR code or entering its serial number. Blink Mini, Video Doorbell, and Wired Floodlight models can communicate directly with Wi-Fi; Outdoor and Indoor (3rd Gen), XT, and XT2 cameras require a Sync Module sold separately.
Before you begin
Have the camera, its batteries or power cable, a phone or tablet with internet access, and the name and password of your home Wi-Fi network ready. You will need the Blink app, a Blink account, and permission for the app to use your camera when it scans a QR code.
- Install the current version of the Blink app from your device’s official app store.
- Make sure the phone itself can reach the internet during setup.
- Use a 2.4 GHz home Wi-Fi network. Blink lists a minimum upload speed of 2 Mbps per Blink device.
- Keep the camera and, where applicable, the Sync Module close enough to the router for initial pairing.
- Locate the QR code and serial number on each device. Manual serial-number entry is available if scanning is unsuccessful.
Blink’s setup guidance starts with the account rather than the hardware: “Begin by downloading the Blink app and creating your account.” Complete account creation or sign-in before attempting to enroll a module or camera. If the app requests an email verification step, finish it so the account is fully active.

Choose the correct setup path for your model
The camera family determines whether a Sync Module is part of the initial installation. A module can also be present in a system that includes a camera capable of connecting directly, but it is not required for those models’ communications.

| Camera family | Sync Module required? | Power style | Initial communication path | Storage consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Outdoor and Indoor (3rd Gen) | Yes; sold separately | Battery camera | Camera communicates through the configured Sync Module | Can be part of a system using the supported Sync Module 2 storage workflow |
| XT and XT2 | Yes; sold separately | Battery camera | Camera communicates through the configured Sync Module | Can be part of a system using the supported Sync Module 2 storage workflow |
| Mini | No | Plug-in camera | Connects directly to home Wi-Fi | May be added to a system that also has a module |
| Video Doorbell | No | Doorbell power arrangement | Connects directly to home Wi-Fi | May be added to a system that also has a module |
| Wired Floodlight | No | Wired camera | Connects directly to home Wi-Fi | May be added to a system that also has a module |
Blink states that “The Wired Floodlight, Mini, and Video Doorbell do not require a Sync Module.” For a camera listed as requiring one, finish module setup before you add the camera. If local storage is the reason you are considering a module, confirm that the Sync Module 2 workflow fits your camera system; it is an optional storage path, not a prerequisite for the directly connecting models.
Install the Blink app and prepare your account
1. Download the current app
- Open your phone or tablet’s official app store.
- Search for the Blink app and install the current release.
- Open the app and choose the option to create a Blink account or sign in to an existing one.
- Complete any email verification prompt before proceeding to device enrollment.
Using an outdated app can leave you with different menu labels or prevent the current pairing flow from appearing. Update the app before troubleshooting hardware.
2. Prepare the network and phone permissions
Connect the phone to the same home network you intend to give the camera or Sync Module. The setup process briefly asks the phone to join a temporary network created by the module, so the phone must be able to change Wi-Fi networks during enrollment.

- Confirm that the home network offers a 2.4 GHz connection.
- Check that available upload capacity meets Blink’s 2 Mbps-per-device baseline, especially if several Blink devices will operate at once.
- Allow the Blink app to use the phone’s camera so it can read a device QR code.
- On iOS, allow the app’s Local Network access. On Android, allow Location access when the app requests it; Android uses that permission when apps discover nearby Wi-Fi networks.
If you deny a permission, you can usually enable it later in the phone’s app-permission settings. Return to Blink and refresh the available Wi-Fi list after changing it.
Set up a Sync Module
Follow this section first for Outdoor and Indoor (3rd Gen), XT, and XT2 cameras. Plug the module into power before trying to add one of those cameras.
1. Start module enrollment
- Open the Blink app’s Home screen.
- Tap the plus icon.
- Choose Sync Module.
- Scan the QR code printed on the module. If scanning is not practical, choose the manual-entry option and type the module’s serial number.
- Create a new system or select an existing system when the app asks where the module belongs.
A system is the container the app uses to group a module and its cameras. Choose the existing system if you are expanding an installation; create a new one if this is a separate location or household setup.

Blink describes the network name as “BLINK-” followed by the last four digits of the device’s serial number. For this step, the digits correspond to the Sync Module serial number, so do not mistake the temporary network for your final home network.
3. Join the temporary BLINK network
- When the app asks the phone to connect, open the phone’s Wi-Fi selection screen if it does not open automatically.
- Select BLINK-XXXX, with XXXX replaced by the last four digits of the module serial number.
- Return to the Blink app after the phone joins that temporary network.
The temporary connection is a normal handoff used to configure the module. It is not the wireless network the module will use permanently.
4. Give the module your home Wi-Fi details
- Select your home Wi-Fi network from the list shown by Blink.
- Enter the network password exactly as it is configured on the router.
- Tap Join.
- Wait for the app to finish transferring the network details and confirm the module.
- Tap Done when the app reports completion.
Leave the module powered while this exchange takes place. Closing the app or moving the phone out of range can interrupt the handoff. Once the module is confirmed, proceed to camera enrollment without resetting it.
Add a Blink camera to the app
These steps apply after the module is configured for a module-dependent camera, and they are also the direct setup path for Mini, Video Doorbell, and Wired Floodlight models.
- From the Blink app, tap Add Device (+).
- Choose the camera type that matches the hardware you are installing.
- Allow camera access if the app asks, then scan the QR code on the camera.
- If the scan fails or you prefer not to scan, select manual entry and type the camera’s serial number.
- Select the existing system or create a new system for the camera.
- Follow the remaining prompts. Keep the camera powered or keep its batteries installed until the app displays the camera-added confirmation.
For a module-dependent camera, the app associates the camera with the Sync Module system you already configured. For a direct-connect camera, the prompts provide the camera’s own Wi-Fi enrollment path. In either case, the camera is not fully ready until the confirmation appears in the app.

What changes between direct-connect and module-based installations
Battery cameras that require a module
Outdoor and Indoor (3rd Gen), XT, and XT2 use the Sync Module as the communication bridge established during setup. Their installation therefore has two enrollments: first the module, then the camera. If you begin by tapping the camera option before the module exists in the system, the app cannot complete the required path.
Mini, Video Doorbell, and Wired Floodlight
These models do not need a Sync Module to communicate. Install the app, prepare the phone and 2.4 GHz network, tap Add Device (+), choose the appropriate camera type, and complete QR or serial-number enrollment. They can still be placed in a system that contains a module, which is useful when one Blink installation contains both battery and wired or plug-in cameras.
Using a Sync Module 2 for supported local storage
Local storage is a separate decision from basic pairing. If you want the storage workflow supported by Sync Module 2, establish the module-based system first and then follow the app’s storage prompts for that system. A directly connecting camera can remain usable without a module; adding one for storage or for a mixed-camera system should be an intentional choice rather than an assumed requirement.

The app cannot find the Sync Module
- Verify that the module is plugged in and has reached the blinking-blue and solid-green pattern expected by the setup screen.
- Confirm that the phone has internet access and is running the current Blink app.
- Move the phone and module nearer to the router for the initial discovery attempt.
- Return to the Home screen, tap the plus icon, choose Sync Module again, and rescan the module QR code or enter its serial number manually.
Do not add a battery camera first when its model requires a module. The camera enrollment depends on the module already being present in the selected system.
The BLINK-XXXX network does not appear
First check permissions rather than assuming the module is defective. On an iPhone or iPad, enable Blink’s Local Network permission. On Android, enable Location permission, return to the app, and refresh the Wi-Fi list. Confirm that you are looking for BLINK- plus the final four digits of the module serial number, not the camera’s printed serial number.
If the network still is not listed, keep the module powered, keep the phone nearby, and restart the discovery step from the app. A stale Wi-Fi list can hide a newly available temporary network until it is refreshed.

Your home Wi-Fi is missing from the list
- Check that the router is broadcasting a 2.4 GHz network.
- Move the phone closer to the router and refresh the list.
- Confirm that the router is online and that the phone can browse the internet.
- If the network name is hidden, use the app’s available manual network option if it presents one, entering the network name and password exactly.
A camera or module cannot finish setup with an incorrect password. Re-enter it carefully, including capitalization and punctuation, then tap Join again.
The app rejects the Wi-Fi password or setup times out
Recheck the password from the router’s own label or administration screen rather than relying on memory. Make sure the phone has not automatically switched away from the temporary BLINK network before the app completes its handoff. Keep the app open during the transfer and avoid moving the module while it is receiving the home-network details.
If several devices will share the connection, compare the network’s available upload capacity with Blink’s baseline for each device. A connection that works for one camera may become unreliable when additional cameras consume the available upstream bandwidth.
QR-code scanning fails
- Clean the phone camera lens and the printed code area.
- Hold the phone steady, avoid glare, and allow the app to use the camera.
- Try the code on the module or camera again from the distance suggested by the on-screen scanner.
- Choose manual serial-number entry if scanning continues to fail.
Enter the serial number exactly as printed. Check characters that are easy to confuse, such as the letter O and the number zero, before submitting it.
The camera is not added after a successful scan
Confirm that you selected the correct camera type and the intended system. Module-dependent cameras must be associated with the system containing their configured module. Keep the camera powered or fitted with batteries while the final prompts run, and wait for the camera-added confirmation instead of leaving the screen immediately after the scan.
The camera appears offline after setup
- Check that the camera still has battery power or a stable power connection.
- Confirm that the router is online and that the camera remains within a practical wireless range.
- For a module-dependent model, check that the Sync Module remains powered and is shown in the same system.
- Reopen the Blink app and allow its device list to refresh before attempting another enrollment.
If the camera repeatedly drops offline, address the network conditions first: the correct band, internet access, upload capacity, and distance from the router or module.
Final setup checklist
- The Blink app is current, and the account is created, signed in, and verified.
- The phone has internet access and the required camera, Local Network, or Location permissions.
- The home network is 2.4 GHz and has at least Blink’s stated 2 Mbps upload baseline per device.
- A required Sync Module was enrolled before its cameras, with the expected LED pattern observed.
- The phone successfully joined the temporary BLINK-XXXX network during module setup.
- The module received the correct home Wi-Fi password and the app reached Done.
- Each camera was added from Add Device (+) using a QR code or exact manual serial number.
- The app displayed a camera-added confirmation for every device.
Once these checks are complete, the camera and its communication path are registered to the selected Blink system. Future additions follow the same distinction: configure a module first for camera families that require one; use direct camera enrollment for Mini, Video Doorbell, and Wired Floodlight.
