The safest first engraving is a controlled test on scrap, not a finished project. Read the manual for your exact machine, make ventilation, cooling and interlocks work before firing, connect the controller and configure the work area, focus using the machine’s specified method, then run a small speed-and-power grid while you watch it. Select the best-looking square, record its settings for that machine and material, and repeat the test whenever either changes.
1. Identify the machine and read its manual first
Laser engravers that look similar can have very different installation and operating requirements. Start by recording the manufacturer, model, laser type, controller and usable work area from the manual or rating label. Keep that manual beside the machine during setup.
The three broad categories you may encounter are diode, CO2 cabinet and galvo systems. They differ in focusing, cooling, enclosure design, software support and the materials their manufacturers permit. Treat the following as orientation, not a substitute for the model manual.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Machine class | Setup characteristics | Focusing approach | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diode | Often an open-frame or enclosed design with an air-assist or exhaust accessory, depending on the model. | Many GCode diode machines use a supplied spacer or gauge. | Use only the wavelength-matched eye protection and enclosure arrangement specified for your machine. |
| CO2 cabinet | Typically requires exhaust, grounding, interlocks and water cooling. OMTech’s covered cabinet guidance requires confirming water flow before the tube is turned on. | A spacer or autofocus system may be supplied. | Do not operate a CO2 cabinet if its cooling system is not working or water flow has not been confirmed. See OMTech’s CO2 safety guidance. |
| Galvo | Uses a scanning head and lens rather than a moving gantry; its usable field and working distance are lens-specific. | Use the lens-distance or focusing procedure supplied for that galvo. | LightBurn’s 2.2 material-test presets do not include galvo systems, so create a test using the machine’s own controls and guidance. |
Do not copy a diode procedure to a CO2 or galvo machine. A missing water loop, incorrect lens distance or wrong controller profile can damage equipment or create a serious hazard.

2. Prepare a safe work area
Ventilation and exhaust
Arrange exhaust before you make a mark. Route the machine’s exhaust to an appropriate outside vent where possible; OMTech recommends a dedicated vent for its CO2 installation. An open window, room fan or improvised hose is not automatically an adequate substitute. Follow the machine’s required duct size, fan direction and filter instructions.
Keep the exhaust path short, supported and free of kinks. Confirm that air is actually moving before you fire. Never direct contaminated exhaust into an occupied room, another building or an intake for heating and cooling equipment.
Clear combustible material
Place the engraver on a stable, non-combustible surface with enough clearance to open its lid, reach the emergency controls and inspect the work. Remove cardboard, paper, solvents, loose sawdust and other combustible clutter from around the machine. Keep a suitable method of fire response available and remain at the machine for the entire job.
Recommended Free Tools
Verify protective features
Check that the enclosure, lid switches, emergency stop, door interlocks and any key switch operate as described by the manual. Do not bypass an interlock to make the machine run. Wear the wavelength-specific protective eyewear required by the manufacturer, even when the beam is enclosed if the manual calls for it.
Check cooling and electrical requirements
A CO2 cabinet may need a chiller or water pump, filled reservoir, correct tubing and confirmed circulation. OMTech’s safety instructions specifically say not to use the covered CO2 machine when water cooling is not working and to confirm water flow before turning on the tube. A diode or galvo may have different cooling requirements; use its manual instead.

Use the specified power connection, grounding method and voltage. OMTech’s installation guidance includes grounding and initial checks for its CO2 machines. Do not assume that a household extension lead, adapter or ungrounded outlet is acceptable.
3. Unbox, inspect and complete the initial checks
- Inspect for shipping damage. Look for cracked panels, bent rails, loose connectors, damaged cables, leaking coolant lines or a shifted optical assembly. Photograph damage before powering the unit and contact the seller or manufacturer if the manual requires an inspection report.
- Remove transport restraints. Take out foam, cable ties and locking screws listed in the manual. Leaving a gantry lock or head restraint in place can cause a collision.
- Install supplied accessories. Fit the exhaust hose, air assist, water lines, chiller, pump, honeycomb or other parts exactly as shown for your model. Do not improvise a coolant or high-voltage connection.
- Confirm fluid circulation when applicable. Fill only with the coolant specified by the manufacturer, inspect for leaks, and verify visible flow before enabling the laser tube.
- Power up without firing. Turn on the main power and controller while keeping the laser disabled. Check displays, fans, pumps and exhaust for normal operation and listen for unusual noise.
- Run the manufacturer’s initial check or factory file if supplied. OMTech’s setup guide describes an initial test file. Use that file only after the safety checks pass, and follow the manual’s order of operations.
4. Connect the controller and configure software
Use the software and connection type supported by your controller. LightBurn’s first-project and material-test guides cover common setup paths, but the correct device profile, origin and dimensions are machine-specific.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Install the supported software and driver. Connect the USB, Ethernet or other interface specified by the machine. If the operating system does not detect the controller, stop and resolve the connection before sending a job.
- Add the machine in the software’s device setup. Select the controller or machine profile recommended by the manufacturer. Do not choose a similar-looking model merely because its name appears in a list.
- Enter the usable work area. Measure or copy the X and Y dimensions from the manual, not the outside dimensions of the cabinet. An incorrect size can place artwork beyond the bed.
- Set the origin and home behavior. Configure the corner or center origin and homing method to match the physical machine. Move the head only as far as the manual allows while checking that its displayed coordinates agree with its position.
- Save the device profile. Give it a clear name containing the machine and lens or controller where relevant. A separate profile prevents settings from one machine being sent to another.
- Perform a low-risk connection test. With the laser disabled, send a small movement or boundary command and confirm that the machine responds in the expected direction. Stop immediately if an axis moves toward a limit or the wrong corner.
LightBurn’s First LightBurn Project guide explains first-project setup and focus approaches. Its 2.2 First Material Test guide explains the material-test workflow and preview tools.
5. Focus the laser using the machine’s method
LightBurn states that lasers need to be focused correctly for good results. The correct focal distance is not universal: it depends on the laser head, lens, material height and, for a galvo, the selected lens and working distance.
Diode with a spacer
Place the supplied spacer or gauge between the nozzle and the top surface of the material, then adjust the head or bed as the manual directs. Remove the spacer before engraving. A spacer that is the wrong height, placed on an uneven surface or left under the head can produce a blurred mark or a collision.

CO2 with a spacer or autofocus
Use the supplied spacer at the specified point, or run the autofocus routine if your cabinet has one. Keep the material flat and ensure the head can travel over the test area. Never reach into a moving machine to adjust focus.
Galvo lens distance
Set the material at the lens distance specified for that lens. Some galvo systems use a focus gauge, projected outline or dual red-dot indicator; use the method supplied with your model. The correct distance can change when you change lenses.
Focus on the actual surface you will test. If the material is warped, use a flat scrap or secure it as the manual permits. Re-focus when thickness changes enough to move the surface outside the machine’s focal range.
6. Prepare a first test on matching scrap
Use a spare piece of the same material, finish and approximate thickness as the intended project. LightBurn’s material-test procedure calls for a spare piece of the material being tested. A different species, coating, color or thickness can absorb energy differently, so a grid made on one stock is not a guaranteed recipe for another.
Choose a small grid
Make a compact matrix of labeled squares. One direction varies speed and the other varies power, while dimensions, focus, air assist and other relevant settings remain constant. The exact ranges are machine- and material-dependent; start within the conservative range recommended by the manual or software rather than copying numbers from another machine.

LightBurn 2.2 includes diode and CO2 material-test presets intended as starting points for almost all lasers of the selected type. They are not guarantees, and they do not replace a test on your machine. The guide does not provide presets for galvo systems.
Create and label the test
- Place the scrap where the final work will sit and secure it without covering the intended grid.
- Draw or generate the grid in the laser software and add readable labels for the speed and power values. Keep labels outside the engraved squares if the material is too small.
- Set the correct device profile, material thickness and focus. Do not enable a rotary or other accessory unless it is actually installed and configured.
- Choose the machine’s normal engraving mode and air-assist or exhaust settings required by the manual. Keep those conditions the same for every square.
- Save the project with the date, machine name, material description and test range in the filename.
7. Preview, frame and run the grid
Inspect the preview
Use the software preview to check the artwork, labels, dimensions and operation order before sending it. LightBurn describes preview as a way to inspect how the design will be processed. Confirm that the grid is inside the configured work area and that no hidden object, duplicate line or unintended fill is present.
Frame the job
With the laser disabled, use the machine’s Frame command to trace the job boundary. Watch the head or projected outline and verify that every corner lands on the scrap. Framing catches an incorrect origin, an oversized grid and a misplaced workpiece before firing.
Start and monitor continuously
Begin the test only after the lid, exhaust, cooling and interlocks are ready. Stay beside the machine and keep a clear view of the material. OMTech’s operating guidance warns about fire and says not to leave engraving unattended. Stop the job if you see unexpected flame, smoke accumulation, a stalled axis, coolant loss, exhaust failure or any change that is not covered by the manual.
Do not use the software’s Fire function as a casual focusing shortcut. LightBurn’s first-project guidance includes a warning about the Fire button; follow the machine’s prescribed low-power or disabled-laser focusing procedure instead.

8. Select a starting setting and record it
When the grid is complete and safe to handle, compare the squares under consistent lighting. Look for the result that meets your purpose: a clean, legible mark with the required darkness or contrast, minimal scorching, no unwanted melting and acceptable edge quality. A darker square is not automatically better if it damages the surface.
Write down the exact machine profile, lens or head, material name and thickness, focus method, speed, power, passes, air-assist state, exhaust setup and date. Photograph the grid and keep the file with the settings note. This record becomes a starting point for the next piece, not a permanent universal setting.
Repeat the grid when you change material supplier, coating, color, thickness, lens, focus height, air assist, software profile or machine hardware. LightBurn notes that material settings differ; a saved value is meaningful only with the conditions recorded beside it.

The machine is not detected
- Confirm the controller is powered and the cable or network connection matches the manual.
- Check that the selected software device profile and port are correct.
- With the laser disabled, test a small movement. If the machine moves in the wrong direction or refuses to home, stop and correct the origin, axis or controller configuration.
The mark is faint, blurred or inconsistent
- Recheck focus with the machine’s spacer, autofocus or lens-distance method.
- Verify that the material is flat and that the head is not changing height across the grid.
- Confirm that the selected machine profile, speed and power are the values intended for the test.
- Inspect the lens, nozzle and work surface according to the cleaning instructions in the manual; do not touch optics with unsuitable cleaners.
The material flames or smoke builds up
- Stop the job and keep the enclosure closed if the machine’s emergency procedure says to do so.
- Check exhaust, air assist, focus and the material’s approval in the manual before trying again.
- Never continue simply by increasing speed or lowering power without identifying why combustion occurred.
The job lands in the wrong place
- Recheck the software origin, homing state and work-area dimensions.
- Frame the job again with the material positioned exactly as it will be engraved.
- Confirm that the workpiece did not move and that no rotary or offset setting is enabled accidentally.
A CO2 machine shows no confirmed water flow
Do not fire the tube. Turn the system off as directed, inspect the reservoir, pump, tubing and flow indicator, and follow the manufacturer’s service procedure. OMTech’s safety instruction is explicit for its covered CO2 cabinet: operation is prohibited when cooling is not working properly or water flow has not been confirmed.
10. Move from the grid to a first project
Choose a simple design that fits well inside the framed area and uses the same material as the test. Keep the first project small enough to stop easily. Preview it, frame it, and remain present exactly as you did for the grid.
Change one variable at a time when refining the result. If the design needs more contrast, adjust the recorded speed or power deliberately and test a small area rather than committing an entire sheet. Preserve the original grid and settings note so you can return to a known starting point.
A successful first engraving is not proof that every material is safe or every setting is transferable. Machine-specific instructions control allowable materials, cooling, focus, ventilation and operation. Treat each new combination as a fresh, supervised test.
