The most reliable beginner setup is a small, species-appropriate formicarium with a thin, visible nesting space, a secure lid, controlled moisture, food matched to the ants and an opaque cover for darkness between observations. You can make a simple viewing farm from two clear CD cases and a thin layer of soil, or use another nest design with a narrow cavity between transparent panes. Keep the nest dark except for brief observations, add water gradually, and treat a worker-only group as a temporary observation colony unless you have a queenright colony that can produce replacement workers.

This approach lets you see tunnels, workers and (when present) brood without treating the ants as a display that can be left in bright light or allowed to dry out. The exact nest, escape barrier and diet must be matched to the species; no single ant-farm design or barrier works for every ant.

What an ant farm needs to do

An observation farm has two jobs that can conflict: it must expose the nest to your eyes while still giving ants a dark, stable place to live. Choose a formicarium (an ant nest habitat) that provides a narrow, visible nesting area and a separate way to offer food and water. A removable opaque cover is important because ants normally use darker nest spaces; remove it only for short checks.

Rebecca Clark’s Arizona State University (ASU) Ask A Biologist guide describes a do-it-yourself observation farm made with a thin layer of dirt between two clear CD cases. The Australian Museum describes a similar principle: a thin cavity between panes containing soil or sand, with an opaque cover that can be removed for viewing. These are examples rather than universal specifications. Ants differ in body size, climbing ability, nesting habits and moisture needs, so select a design for the species you actually have.

In practical terms, the habitat should provide:

  • A clear viewing surface close enough to the nest to reveal tunnels and activity.
  • A nesting medium that can hold galleries without becoming waterlogged.
  • A secure lid, seams and access ports that match the ants’ escape ability.
  • A controlled source of water and a way to add food without opening the nest unnecessarily.
  • A removable opaque cover and a location with a comfortable, stable temperature.

ASU summarizes the basic care requirement this way: “All that they need are a source of food, some water, and a comfortable temperature” (Rebecca Clark, ASU Ask A Biologist, 2009). The habitat determines whether you can provide those basics safely and observe the result.

Before collecting, possessing, importing or transporting ants, check the rules for your location and species. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, and the sources used here do not establish a universal legal procedure.

Choose a visible nest design

Thin pane-and-substrate formicarium

A cavity between two clear panes keeps the nesting layer shallow, so tunnels remain visible from the side. The Australian Museum describes using soil or sand in this type of nest and covering it when it is not being observed. A shallow layer also makes it easier to notice whether the substrate is drying or becoming saturated, but the nest volume must suit the colony: an oversized empty space is not automatically better.

DIY clear-CD-case farm

ASU’s example uses two clear CD cases with a thin layer of dirt between them. It is useful for a short observation project because the construction is simple and the underground view is close to the surface. Treat the example as a model for the visibility principle, not as proof that every species can live in that exact medium or container.

How to compare candidate habitats

Design question Thin cavity between panes Two-clear-CD-case example
What you can see Tunnels and nest activity are visible through the transparent pane; brood visibility depends on where ants place it. Designed specifically to give an underground view through the clear cases.
Nesting medium Soil or sand is described by the Australian Museum; the correct medium still depends on species. ASU describes a thin layer of dirt.
Moisture control Requires gradual watering and observation of the substrate; no universal humidity percentage is established. ASU advises adding water a little at a time until the soil looks damp.
Escape control Lid, seams and any barrier must be selected for the species; some ants climb smooth glass or plastic. Case edges and openings still require a species-appropriate seal and escape control.
Best use A visible nest format that can be adapted to the ant’s nesting requirements. A simple, short-term observation project when the species and containment are suitable.

When comparing any other formicarium, score it on five points: visibility of tunnels and brood, control of substrate moisture, ease of feeding and cleaning, containment for the chosen species, and whether its nest volume fits the colony now. The available guidance does not identify one universally best commercial model.

Gather materials and plan the layout

Prepare the habitat before introducing ants. You will generally need a transparent nest chamber, a nesting medium appropriate for the species, a secure lid, an opaque cover and a separate feeding or access area if the design has one. A small eyedropper is useful for adding water gradually. A dampened sponge can serve as a water source in the Australian Museum’s general care approach, provided the species and enclosure design can use it safely.

Keep the viewing chamber narrow enough that the ants’ tunnels remain visible, but do not compress or injure ants while assembling it. Seal or fasten joints before adding ants and test every opening. If the setup has tubing, ports or a removable lid, check those connections individually rather than assuming the main container is secure.

Set up the ant farm step by step

  1. Identify the ants and check local rules. Determine the species, or at least obtain reliable species-specific guidance, before choosing substrate, moisture level or an escape barrier. Do not assume that a wild colony may legally be collected or moved.
  2. Build the empty enclosure. Assemble the clear nest chamber, lid, seams, feeding access and any outworld area. Close every joint and opening. A barrier that works for one ant may fail for another because climbing ability varies.
  3. Add the nesting medium. Place the soil or sand layer, or the medium specified for the species, in the visible cavity. Keep the layer thin enough for side viewing when using a pane-style or CD-case design. Remove debris that could block the viewing surface or access points.
  4. Test containment before adding ants. Close the lid and inspect edges, corners, ports and cable-sized gaps. Some ants can climb smooth glass or plastic, while certain ants cannot, so use an escape-control method known to suit the species rather than relying on a generic promise of “escape proof.”
  5. Moisten conservatively. Use an eyedropper to add a small amount of water. Stop when the soil looks damp, then wait and observe how moisture spreads. Do not flood the chamber; excessive water can drown ants. Do not let the substrate become so dry that ants lack access to water.
  6. Install the opaque cover. Cover the nest while it is not being observed. Make sure the cover can be removed briefly without disturbing the enclosure or leaving an opening through which ants can escape.
  7. Introduce the ants calmly. Move ants with the least handling possible and close the enclosure immediately. Give them time to settle before repeated viewing. If the ants are from a colony, avoid separating individuals unnecessarily.
  8. Add the first food in a controlled location. Use the diet appropriate for the species and place only a modest amount where it can be removed if it spoils. Keep food out of the nesting substrate when the design allows a separate feeding area.
  9. Record a baseline. Note the date, approximate number of workers, nest moisture appearance, food offered and whether a queen or brood is present. These notes make changes easier to detect than memory alone.

Keep ants from escaping

Containment is a design problem, not an accessory that can be guaranteed across all ants. The Australian Museum notes that some ants climb smooth glass or plastic while certain ants cannot, and it illustrates different containment designs. Species, worker size, health and the condition of the barrier all matter.

Inspect the enclosure every time you open it:

  • Check the lid’s full perimeter, especially corners and hinges.
  • Check seams between panes or cases for hairline gaps.
  • Check feeding ports, tubing and cable-sized openings.
  • Look for condensation, dust or food residue that could create a route across a smooth surface.
  • Close the access point before removing the opaque cover or moving the enclosure.

If workers repeatedly reach the lid or barrier, stop treating the setup as secure. Rehouse them in a design and escape-control system documented for that species. Do not release escaped or collected ants outdoors without species-specific and local guidance; moving ants can create ecological and legal problems.

Control water and moisture

Ants need water, but a wet nest can be as dangerous as a dry one. ASU recommends adding water a little at a time with an eyedropper until the soil looks damp. It warns that too much moisture can drown ants, while too little leaves them thirsty. The Australian Museum describes a dampened sponge as a general water source. Neither source establishes one humidity percentage that applies to every species, so follow the care requirements for the ants you keep.

Signs that watering is cautious enough

  • The substrate is visibly damp rather than pooled or muddy.
  • No water is standing in the nest cavity.
  • Workers can reach the water source without being submerged.
  • The surface is not so dry that it pulls away from the walls or prevents ants from using the nest.

Add small amounts only when observation indicates the medium is drying. A narrow, visible nest makes changes easier to see, but it does not remove the need to monitor the species’ requirements. If water floods the chamber, stop adding more and prioritize a safe, species-appropriate recovery setup rather than repeatedly disturbing the ants.

Feed workers according to their ant type

There is no single ant-farm diet. ASU gives grass seeds or birdseed as examples for seed-harvesting ants. The University of Florida IFAS explains that food preferences differ among ant species and that workers forage for both solid and liquid foods. It also notes that most adult ants cannot ingest solid food directly, while larvae can digest solid particles. Those facts are why a food that attracts one species may be useless or unsuitable for another.

Seed-harvesting ants

For a confirmed seed-harvesting species, offer a small quantity of suitable grass seeds or birdseed, as ASU suggests. Keep the supply dry and remove moldy or uneaten material. Do not infer that every ant will thrive on seeds.

Other species

Use species-specific guidance for the balance of liquid and solid foods. Workers may collect liquids for themselves or the colony, while larvae can process solid particles that adult workers cannot. Observe what the colony actually carries and how quickly food deteriorates, then adjust quantity and placement rather than leaving large amounts in the nest.

Feeding routine

  • Offer food in a location that can be cleaned without excavating the nest.
  • Use small portions so leftovers do not become a moisture or mold problem.
  • Remove spoiled food promptly, while minimizing disturbance.
  • Record the food type and the colony’s response; this is more reliable than assuming a generic ant diet.

Should you keep a queen?

A worker-only group can support short-term observation, but it cannot lay eggs to replace workers. ASU says queenless worker groups may last weeks or months. An Ask Extension response explains that a queen continually laying eggs allows a colony to replace workers and reports that workers usually live only a few months at most.

Worker-only observation

Choose this option when the objective is a classroom demonstration or a brief look at foraging and nest-building. State the limitation clearly: the group is temporary, and its worker population will decline as individuals die. Do not add an unrelated queen later unless the species’ biology and the handling method make that intervention appropriate.

Queenright colony

Choose a queenright colony when you want to observe a colony persist and grow. The queen’s egg laying provides the replacement workers that a worker-only group lacks. A queen does not remove the need for correct moisture, food, temperature or containment; it changes the colony’s expected duration and development.

Never assume that a queen can be legally collected, transported or imported. Verify local rules and obtain species-specific advice before moving a queen or an entire colony.

Observe without stressing the colony

Keep the nest covered and dark except during brief observations. The Australian Museum recommends keeping a formicarium dark when it is not being observed and using as low a light level as possible while watching. ASU likewise presents the underground view as the purpose of a thin observation farm.

During a check, look for workers using tunnels, carrying food, tending brood (if present), clustering around a water source or attempting to escape. Replace the opaque cover after the check. Avoid repeated opening, tapping, bright illumination or long handling sessions; the goal is to observe normal activity rather than force a display.

A simple maintenance and troubleshooting routine

At each observation

  • Confirm the lid, seams and ports are closed.
  • Check whether the substrate is damp, flooded or excessively dry.
  • Look for spoiled food, mold or debris near the feeding area.
  • Note worker activity, brood location and any escape attempts.
  • Replace the opaque cover when finished.

If workers are climbing out

Close the enclosure immediately and identify the route. Inspect smooth walls, corners, lid gaps and access ports. Change to a species-appropriate containment design rather than assuming a different generic coating will work.

If the nest is too wet

Stop adding water and prevent further flooding. Avoid opening the nest repeatedly; use a safe, species-appropriate recovery method and seek care instructions for the species. Excess moisture can drown ants.

If the nest is too dry

Add a very small amount of water with an eyedropper and wait for it to spread. Repeat only when observation shows that the medium remains too dry. Do not compensate for a dry nest by pouring in a large volume.

If food is ignored

Reconsider the species identification and food category. Seed-harvesting ants may accept seeds, but other ants have different preferences. Offer an appropriate small portion and record the response rather than leaving a large amount to spoil.

If workers decline over time

A declining worker-only group may be reaching its biological limit: without a queen, no eggs replace workers. A queenright colony can replace workers through egg laying, but only when the queen and colony are legally and safely housed and the habitat meets their requirements.

When this setup is the right choice

A shallow, covered observation farm is a good beginner project when you can identify or responsibly source a suitable species, secure every opening, provide controlled water and food, and accept either a temporary worker group or the responsibilities of a queenright colony. It is not a universal habitat for every ant. Species-specific containment, nesting medium, moisture and diet decisions come before appearance or convenience.

For background on collecting and preparing an observation habitat, see ASU Ask A Biologist’s “Collecting Ants” (Rebecca Clark, September 25, 2009), the Australian Museum’s “Observing ants”, the Ask Extension answer on queenless worker ants (September 8, 2015), and the University of Florida IFAS guide “Ants”.
