Hamachi can let friends reach a 7 Days to Die server without router port forwarding, but it is not the server itself. You still need the separate 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server tool, a configured serverconfig.xml, firewall rules, and a Hamachi virtual network that every player joins. Players connect to the host computer’s Hamachi IPv4 address and the server port.
For a small group that can tolerate some setup and requires the host PC to stay online, Hamachi is a workable workaround. Port-forwarded self-hosting is the normal no-subscription option, while managed hosting is easier to keep online and maintain.
What a Hamachi server actually is
Hamachi creates a virtual private network (VPN). It gives the host and invited players addresses on a shared virtual-LAN-like network, so game traffic can travel between them even when the host cannot create inbound rules on a home router. This can help with carrier-grade NAT, locked-down routers, or an internet connection where you do not control port forwarding.
Hamachi does not launch, install, or configure 7 Days to Die. The game server process comes from the separate Steam tool named 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server (Steam app 294420), not from the retail game installation. A Steam Community dedicated-server guide documents VPN software such as Hamachi as a possible hosting method.

The practical connection path is:
- The dedicated-server process listens on the configured port on the host PC.
- Hamachi supplies a virtual IPv4 address for that PC.
- Each player joins the same Hamachi network.
- Players enter the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address and server port in the game’s server browser or direct-connect dialog.
If the dedicated server is not running, Hamachi alone gives players nowhere to connect.
What you need before configuring anything
- A Windows 10 or later 64-bit computer for the dedicated server, according to the current 7 Days to Die Help Center hardware guidance.
- The separate 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server Steam tool (app 294420), installed through Steam.
- A Hamachi installation on the host and on every player’s computer.
- Administrative access to the host operating system so you can approve firewall rules and edit the server configuration.
- At least 8 GB of RAM for the game and 12 GB recommended. Running the client and a dedicated server on one computer requires additional headroom; Steam warns that memory requirements effectively increase when both run together.
- At least 20 GB of storage for the game installation, with extra free space for the server’s world, logs, saves, and updates.
- A broadband internet connection. The host computer must remain powered on, connected, and running the server whenever friends want to play.
These are baseline requirements, not a promise of a particular player count or performance. More players, larger worlds, mods, and running the game client on the same machine all increase CPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth pressure.
Step 1: Install the dedicated-server tool
- Open Steam and switch to the Library view.
- Use the library filter to show Tools, then locate 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server.
- Install the tool separately from the retail game. Confirm that Steam identifies it as app 294420.
- Note the installation directory. You will need it to find
serverconfig.xmland the server executable. - Run Steam updates for the tool before configuring the server. All players should use a compatible game build; a client that is on a different build may fail to connect.
The exact executable filename and folder layout can change between game releases. Use the files Steam installed rather than copying an executable from an older guide.

Step 2: Create the Hamachi network
- Install Hamachi on the computer that will run the dedicated server.
- Sign in or create the Hamachi account required by your installation.
- Choose the option to create a new network. Set a network ID and a strong, unique password.
- Open Hamachi’s status window and record the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address. It is usually shown beside the host computer name; do not use the home router’s private address or public address for this method.
- Install Hamachi on each player’s computer and have each person join the network using its ID and password.
- Verify that every player appears online in Hamachi and that the host is reachable through Hamachi before troubleshooting the game.
Only give the network credentials to people you trust. Anyone admitted to the virtual network may be able to reach services that your firewall exposes on the Hamachi adapter, not just the game.
Step 3: Configure serverconfig.xml
Find serverconfig.xml in the dedicated-server installation directory. Make a backup before editing. The 7 Days to Die Wiki configuration reference describes the available server, gameplay, visibility, and networking settings; names can vary slightly across game versions, so keep the comments and structure shipped with your current tool.

Set an identifiable server name
Change the server-name value to something your friends will recognize. Avoid putting personal information, your public IP address, or the Hamachi network password in the name.
Set the listening port
The documented example uses ServerPort set to 26900. Keep that value unless you have a reason to choose another unused port. Whatever value you select must match the port players enter and the firewall rule you create.
Choose player count and visibility
Set ServerMaxPlayerCount to the number of simultaneous players your hardware and internet connection can support. Visibility settings determine whether the server is listed publicly or kept private. For a friends-only Hamachi server, use the private or hidden option available in your current configuration and distribute the connection details directly.
Decide whether to enable cross-play
Console cross-play has stricter requirements. The current Help Center guidance requires all of the following:
ServerMaxPlayerCountno higher than 8.ServerAllowCrossplay=True.EACEnabled=True.IgnoreEOSSanctions=False.
If your group is PC-only, do not enable cross-play merely because it appears in the file. Match the setting to the platforms you intend to support and to the current build’s documented requirements.

Review gameplay values before changing them
Settings such as DayNightLength and LootRespawnDays have valid ranges documented by the Help Center. Stay within those ranges. Change one group of settings at a time and keep a copy of the original file so you can identify which edit caused a startup or connection problem.
Save the file as XML
Use a plain-text editor. Do not save the file with an extra .txt extension, remove quotation marks, or alter the surrounding XML structure. If the server fails immediately after an edit, restore the backup and reapply changes one at a time.
Step 4: Start the dedicated server
- Close the retail game if it is running on the host while you perform the first test.
- Launch the dedicated-server executable from the tool’s installation directory or through Steam.
- Allow the first startup to create world and log files. The console may display warnings while files are generated; wait until startup finishes and the server reports that it is listening or ready for connections.
- Leave the server console running. Closing it stops the world and disconnects everyone.
- Record the exact port shown in the startup output if it differs from your configuration. The active log is more useful than an old tutorial when diagnosing a mismatch.
Start with a new or disposable test world if you are experimenting. Once a world is working, back up its save directory before changing mods, game versions, or major configuration values.
Step 5: Allow the server through the host firewall
When Windows or another operating system prompts for network access, allow the dedicated-server executable on the Hamachi network adapter. If you dismissed the prompt, create an inbound firewall rule manually for the configured server port and executable.
Use the narrowest rule that works:
- Allow the dedicated-server executable rather than every program.
- Allow only the configured port and protocols.
- Apply the rule to the Hamachi adapter or the network profile used by Hamachi, not automatically to every interface.
- Keep unrelated file-sharing and remote-administration services blocked.
A firewall rule cannot fix a server that is listening on a different port, and Hamachi cannot bypass a rule that blocks the dedicated-server process.

Ports you may see in 7 Days to Die documentation
The Fun Pimps support FAQ, updated December 12, 2025, documents the following defaults. Treat them as configuration guidance, not as a reason to open every port on every interface.

Steam’s general port documentation separately lists UDP 27015 as a default local gameplay port for dedicated or listen servers and describes broader Steam ranges. That generic guidance is not a substitute for the ports shown by your active 7 Days to Die configuration. Do not blindly combine both lists. For a Hamachi setup, first make the configured game port work over the Hamachi adapter; open dashboard or telnet ports only if you deliberately enabled those services.
Step 6: Have players connect
- Each player starts Hamachi and joins the exact network created by the host.
- The host starts the dedicated server and waits until it is ready.
- The host sends players the Hamachi IPv4 address and configured game port, for example
HAMACHI_IPV4:26900. Replace the example port if your configuration uses another value. - Players open 7 Days to Die’s multiplayer server interface and use direct connection or the appropriate IP-entry field.
- They enter the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address, not the host’s public internet address and not the Hamachi network ID.
- Test with one friend first. Once that player can join, bring in the rest of the group.
If the server appears in a list but direct connection works more reliably, use the method that matches your group. Listing behavior can vary with visibility, Steam communication, and the current game build.
Troubleshooting a Hamachi connection
The server process never reaches a ready state
- Restore the last known-good
serverconfig.xml. - Check that XML tags, quotation marks, and setting names are intact.
- Confirm that the configured port is not already used by another service.
- Read the current server log rather than relying on an old screenshot or tutorial.
Hamachi shows the host as offline or unreachable
- Confirm that Hamachi is running on both computers and that both users joined the same network ID.
- Check the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address again; it can be confused with a local Wi-Fi address.
- Resolve Hamachi’s peer status before changing game settings.
- Review firewall rules for the Hamachi adapter and the Hamachi application itself.
Players can reach Hamachi but not the game
- Verify that the dedicated server is still running.
- Compare the port in
serverconfig.xml, the server startup log, the firewall rule, and the address players entered. - Allow both the TCP and UDP traffic required by the configured 7 Days to Die port. The documented 26900-series defaults use TCP 26900 and UDP 26900–26903.
- Temporarily test with one player and no optional dashboard or telnet services.
Only the host can join
This usually indicates a network path or firewall difference rather than a world-setting problem. Confirm that the friend is using the Hamachi address, that the host’s firewall rule applies to the Hamachi interface, and that the server did not bind only to a different local interface. Check the startup log for the address and port on which it is listening.

Cross-play players cannot connect
Recheck the four Help Center requirements together: a maximum player count of 8, ServerAllowCrossplay=True, EACEnabled=True, and IgnoreEOSSanctions=False. A PC-only configuration that works for Steam clients may not satisfy console cross-play rules.

Resource planning when the host also plays
Steam lists 8 GB of RAM as the game minimum and 12 GB as recommended. The Help Center lists Windows 10 or higher 64-bit, 8 GB minimum RAM, 12 GB recommended, and 20 GB storage, while warning that dedicated servers need extra CPU and RAM headroom. A host running both the dedicated server and the retail client should therefore not treat the 8 GB minimum as a comfortable target.
- Close memory-heavy applications before starting both processes.
- Leave free storage for world saves, logs, and updates.
- Watch CPU and memory usage during a full-group session, not only during an empty-server test.
- Reduce the configured player limit or demanding gameplay settings if the machine becomes unstable.
- Back up saves separately from the installation so a tool update or reinstall does not become your only copy.
Better alternatives to Hamachi
Port-forwarded self-hosting
Port forwarding is the conventional self-hosting route when you control the router. Reserve a stable LAN address for the server computer, forward the configured game ports from the router to that address, allow the same ports through the host firewall, and give players the public address and port. The Fun Pimps FAQ explicitly directs administrators to configure router port forwarding and documents the 26900-series defaults.
This approach removes the requirement that every player run Hamachi, but it exposes a service to the public internet. Use a strong administrative password, keep the operating system and server updated, open only necessary ports, and avoid enabling web or telnet administration unless you understand how to secure it.

Managed hosting
A managed host installs and maintains the dedicated server, handles much of the networking and update work, and keeps the world online without requiring the owner’s home PC to stay powered on. It is the lower-maintenance choice for a persistent community or a group whose host cannot reliably run a server.
Provider features, regions, prices, player limits, mod support, backup policies, and cross-play availability change frequently. Verify those details directly with the provider before paying; no universal price or uptime figure applies to every plan.

Which method should you choose?
- Choose Hamachi when router access is unavailable, the group is small, everyone can install the VPN, and one trusted host can keep a PC online.
- Choose port-forwarded self-hosting when you control the router, want players to connect without extra VPN software, and are comfortable maintaining firewall and router security.
- Choose managed hosting when the world should stay available while the owner is offline or you do not want to administer a Windows server, router, and updates.
Whichever route you use, keep the dedicated-server configuration and save backups, test with one player after updates, and make the active port and cross-play settings explicit to everyone joining.
The Bottom Line
Hamachi is a virtual-LAN workaround, not a 7 Days to Die server. Install the separate dedicated-server tool, configure serverconfig.xml, allow the documented port through the host firewall, and have players connect to the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address. If you control your router, port forwarding is simpler for players; if you need an always-on world with less administration, managed hosting is the better fit.
