Connect the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s matching HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC) port. Select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output and select the corresponding HDMI/TV input on the soundbar. Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC when required, then test with content that actually carries a 5.1 mix. A soundbar marked “5.1” does not make every program surround sound; the delivered format depends on the TV, source device, app, settings and content.

What you need before connecting anything

Read the labels on both devices and keep their model manuals available. Port names, menu wording and supported formats vary by model, software version and region.

  • A TV with an HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC, if you plan to use HDMI.
  • A soundbar with an HDMI port labeled HDMI OUT, TV-ARC or eARC. Do not assume an unlabeled HDMI input can send audio back to the TV.
  • A suitable HDMI cable. Samsung recommends a cable labeled “High Speed” or “High Speed with Ethernet” for its soundbar ARC connections; Sony likewise advises using a suitable HDMI cable for the ARC/eARC link. Check the manuals if your equipment specifies something different (Samsung UK Support; Sony Help Guide).
  • Power connected to the TV, soundbar, subwoofer and any separate surround speakers.

If neither device has a usable ARC/eARC connection, optical digital audio is the practical fallback. You will need an optical cable and an optical input on the soundbar.

HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC or optical: which connection should you use?

Use HDMI ARC or eARC first when both devices support it. The TV sends its audio back to the soundbar through the HDMI cable, and HDMI may also allow TV-remote control, linked power and soundbar settings on the TV screen. Sony notes that these control features depend on the particular soundbar and TV (Sony Help Guide).

ULTIMEA 5.1CH Surround Sound Bar System with Dolby Atmos, Poseidon M60 | VoiceMX, BassMX, APP, 300W Soundbar for Smart TV, Surround Sound System for TV, with Subwoofer, Bluetooth 5.4
  • Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Connection What it can carry Control and convenience When it makes sense
HDMI ARC Compressed multichannel formats, including compressed 5.1 on supported equipment. It does not provide the same bandwidth as eARC for uncompressed multichannel audio. Can support HDMI-CEC volume, power and input control, depending on the devices. Both devices have ARC, or the TV has ARC and your sources do not require eARC-only formats.
HDMI eARC Supports compressed 5.1 and, on compatible equipment and paths, uncompressed 5.1, uncompressed 7.1 and higher-bitrate or object-based formats that ARC cannot carry. Provides the HDMI control possibilities of ARC when the devices implement them. You want the broadest format support and both TV and soundbar support eARC.
Optical digital Useful for stereo and supported compressed surround such as Dolby Digital 5.1. It cannot carry some higher-bitrate formats, including Dolby Digital Plus, according to Samsung’s guidance. Usually has fewer integrated TV-control features than HDMI-CEC. The TV or soundbar lacks a compatible ARC/eARC port, or HDMI return audio is unreliable.

Samsung’s eARC comparison states that compressed 5.1 works over both ARC and eARC, while uncompressed 5.1 requires eARC; actual playback still depends on every device in the signal path and on the program’s audio track (Samsung Australia Support). Samsung also describes HDMI as supporting high-bitrate audio such as Dolby Digital Plus, while its optical guidance identifies format limitations (Samsung UK Support).

Connect the soundbar with HDMI ARC or eARC

  1. Power off both devices. This avoids making the initial HDMI handshake while either device is changing inputs.
  2. Find the TV’s labeled port. Look for “HDMI ARC,” “HDMI eARC,” or “ARC/eARC.” A regular HDMI input elsewhere on the TV is not the correct return-audio port.
  3. Find the soundbar’s return-audio port. Use the socket labeled “HDMI OUT (ARC),” “TV-ARC,” “eARC,” or equivalent. Do not plug the TV into an HDMI input on the soundbar unless the manual specifically describes that arrangement.
  4. Connect the cable. Plug one end into the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the other into the soundbar’s matching HDMI output. A High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet is the cable class Samsung recommends for its ARC setup; use an existing cable if it meets your equipment’s requirements.
  5. Reconnect power and turn on the TV and soundbar. Give the devices a moment to detect one another.
  6. Set the soundbar source. Choose the source named TV, HDMI-ARC, ARC, eARC or a similar label. The exact source name differs by model.
  7. Choose the external audio system on the TV. Open the TV’s sound-output menu and select the connected soundbar or audio system. Samsung’s example uses Sound Output; Sony’s eARC example uses Settings > Display & Sound > Audio output > Speakers > Audio system (menu names can differ by model and software).

If the TV asks whether to use HDMI control, accept it when you want the TV remote to adjust the soundbar. On Samsung TVs, HDMI-CEC is called Anynet+. Other manufacturers use different names.

Turn on ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC when necessary

Some equipment enables these functions automatically; other models require manual selection. Open the HDMI, external-device or sound settings on both devices and look for ARC, eARC, HDMI-CEC, device control or a similarly named option.

Samsung eARC example

Samsung’s current eARC instructions specify eARC Mode: Auto and Digital Output Audio Format: Auto or Pass-Through, with HDMI-CEC (Anynet+) enabled. The path and labels vary by model year and software, so treat these as a model-specific example rather than a universal prescription (Samsung Australia Support).

Dolby Audio 5.1 Ch delivers clear dialogue and precise sound, while DTS Virtual:X provides a 3D audio experience, so you can hear sound around you without the need for rear speakers.
  • OPTIMIZED SOUND FOR EVERY SCENE: Get the optimal listening experience for each scene. The soundbar recognizes the type of content you’re watching and automatically adapts audio settings to produce clear voices and detailed sounds.
  • PICK UP EVERY PIECE OF DIALOGUE: Hear voices more clearly with automatically amplified dialogue - allowing it to stand out so you don't miss a word, no matter what you're watching.

What the settings actually do

  • ARC/eARC: permits the TV to return audio over the HDMI connection.
  • HDMI-CEC: lets compatible devices exchange control commands such as power, volume and input changes. It does not create surround audio by itself.
  • Digital output format: determines whether the TV sends PCM, an encoded bitstream automatically selected by the TV, or a pass-through signal. The correct choice depends on what the soundbar and source support.

Use optical audio if HDMI ARC/eARC is unavailable

  1. Turn off the TV and soundbar.
  2. Remove the protective caps from the optical cable, if present.
  3. Connect the TV’s Optical, Digital Audio Out or TOSLINK socket to the soundbar’s Optical In socket.
  4. Turn on both devices.
  5. Set the soundbar source to Optical, D.IN or the equivalent label.
  6. In the TV’s sound menu, select Audio Out/Optical, External speaker or the matching option.

Optical can be a dependable fallback, but it has less capacity than eARC and generally offers fewer HDMI-CEC conveniences. Samsung’s support material lists Dolby Digital 5.1 for optical, HDMI and eARC on the supported products covered by that page; do not apply that table to every soundbar without checking its manual (Samsung UK Support).

Connect streaming boxes, game consoles and Blu-ray players

There are two common layouts. In the first, every source connects to the TV, and the TV returns audio to the soundbar through ARC/eARC. In the second, a source connects to an HDMI input on the soundbar, and the soundbar passes video to the TV. The best choice depends on the ports and audio formats each device supports.

Sources connected to the TV

Plug the console, streaming player or disc player into the TV’s HDMI inputs. The ARC/eARC cable then carries the selected TV input’s audio to the soundbar. Confirm that the TV is configured to output to the external audio system and that its digital-output setting does not down-convert a format your soundbar can decode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sources connected to the soundbar

If the soundbar has HDMI inputs, connect the source to one of them and connect the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC) to the TV’s ARC/eARC port. Select the soundbar input for that source. This arrangement can be useful when the soundbar supports a format or video connection that the TV’s audio-return path does not, but consult both manuals for supported resolutions, HDR formats and audio codecs.

Powered by intelligent spatial algorithms, the system precisely positions audio around and above you—enhancing Dolby Atmos with a more natural, three-dimensional soundstage. Note: Not compatible with DTS.
  • Lossless Audio Transmission: Unlock full Dolby Atmos performance with HDMI eARC, supporting up to 37Mbps bandwidth for lossless 5.1.2-channel audio. Compared to regular ARC, eARC delivers richer detail and better surround effects with no compression. With CEC, your TV and soundbar work as one—power, volume, and input sync automatically for effortless control.
  • Advanced App Control: Customize every detail of your audio experience with the Ultimea App. Fine-tune your surround sound with 13-step level adjustment (-6 to +6), optimize with a 10-band graphic EQ, and choose from 121 preset sound settings. Enjoy seamless OTA updates that unlock new features and keep your system performing at its peak.

Whichever layout you choose, test each source separately. A TV app, a set-top box and a game console may expose different audio-format options even when they use the same HDMI cable.

Place and pair the subwoofer and surround speakers

“5.1” describes a channel arrangement, not one universal cabinet design. Some soundbars include a wireless subwoofer and two separate rear speakers; others simulate surround processing from the bar itself. Do not assume that a product labeled 5.1 always has physical rear speakers.

Use the soundbar’s own manual for the placement diagram, left/right labels, wireless-pairing sequence and room-calibration procedure. The official setup material does not establish one rear-speaker angle, height or subwoofer position that is correct for every model. If your system includes a calibration microphone or app, run it after the speakers are connected and placed.

  • Verify that the left and right rear units are on the correct sides from the listening position.
  • Complete the manufacturer’s pairing procedure before judging surround performance.
  • Keep the subwoofer and wireless speakers within the distance and obstruction limits stated by the manual.
  • Do not cover the soundbar’s microphones, status display or wireless antennas.

Confirm that you are actually receiving 5.1 sound

Use a film, episode, game or test clip whose listing explicitly includes a 5.1 mix. Stereo television broadcasts, music tracks and many online videos may be two-channel even when the soundbar is capable of five channels.

TCL S65K S Series 5.1 Channel Soundbar System with Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Wireless Subwoofer, Wireless Surround Speakers, Bluetooth Music Streaming, and AI Sonic Auto Room Calibration
  • 5.1 S-Series Sound Bar Fill your room with sound, bringing the movie theater experience into your home with just a single HDMI cable.
  • Ray Danz Technology: Experience an expansive soundstage that fills the room with immersive audio.
  • Dolby Atmos and DTS:X: Spatial sound from above and behind putting you in the center of movies, music, and games.
  • Bluetooth Wireless Music Streaming: Stream your favorite music wirelessly with Bluetooth connectivity that allows you to play your favorite songs from your smartphone, tablet, or other Bluetooth-enabled device.
  • Built-In Tweeter: Hear every detail of your favorite movies and music with the built-in center channel tweeter that delivers precise, high-frequency sound to complement the powerful bass.
  1. Start the known surround program and choose its 5.1 audio track in the app or disc menu, if one is offered.
  2. Open the TV, player or receiver information panel and check the selected audio output, when the device provides one.
  3. Look at the soundbar’s front-panel display or information screen. Some models report Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, PCM, multichannel PCM or another incoming format; others show only a listening mode.
  4. Listen for independent activity from the center, left/right, surround and subwoofer channels. This listening check is useful, but the reported input format is a better confirmation than an upmixing or “surround” effect mode.

A “5.1” badge on the product does not prove that every app, source, TV passthrough route or program is delivering 5.1. ARC versus eARC capability, the TV’s output setting, the source device and the content’s own mix all matter.

Troubleshoot no sound, stereo-only audio or dropouts

No sound at all

  • Check that the HDMI cable is in the TV’s specifically labeled ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s ARC/eARC output. An ordinary HDMI port may carry video but not return TV audio.
  • Make sure the TV’s sound output is set to the soundbar or external audio system, not TV speakers.
  • Set the soundbar to the TV/HDMI-ARC/eARC source rather than another HDMI or Bluetooth input.
  • Power-cycle both devices: turn them off, unplug them briefly, reconnect the ARC/eARC cable and turn the TV on before selecting the soundbar.
  • Try another known-good HDMI cable that meets the TV and soundbar manuals’ requirements.

The connection works, but audio is stereo or the bar shows PCM

  • Check whether the program actually contains a 5.1 track and whether that track is selected.
  • Verify that the TV’s digital audio output is not fixed to two-channel PCM when the soundbar supports encoded multichannel audio.
  • For Samsung eARC equipment, test the model’s available PCM, Auto and Pass-Through choices as Samsung recommends, selecting the option compatible with both devices rather than assuming one setting works universally (Samsung Australia Support).
  • Confirm that both the TV and soundbar support eARC if you expect uncompressed 5.1. An ARC-only device cannot gain eARC bandwidth through a software toggle.

Surround speakers or subwoofer are silent

  • Check that the wireless units are powered and have completed the model’s pairing process.
  • Confirm left/right placement and speaker-channel levels in the soundbar menu.
  • Use a genuine 5.1 source rather than a stereo track. Some soundbars will not send content to rear channels unless an upmixing mode is selected.
  • Run the manufacturer’s room-calibration routine, if supplied, after pairing is complete.

Audio cuts out or the ARC link repeatedly disappears

  • Disconnect external HDMI devices temporarily, leave only the TV and soundbar connected, and test the ARC/eARC link again.
  • Check that both products support the ARC or eARC mode you selected and that the cable is compatible.
  • Try the TV’s other documented digital-output format, such as Auto or Pass-Through, if the sound disappears only with particular content.
  • Verify that HDMI-CEC is enabled when the manufacturer requires it for ARC discovery. On Samsung TVs this is Anynet+.
  • Inspect the TV’s eARC-labeled socket and the soundbar’s matching port for a loose connection or physical damage.

Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls for checking eARC support on both devices, the cable and port, eARC mode, and Anynet+; its menu paths are model- and software-dependent (Samsung Australia Support).

When to replace a cable or add an accessory

You do not need a special cable to “add” surround channels. A suitable existing HDMI cable is sufficient when it meets the equipment requirements. If your cable is damaged, too short or not identified, a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet is the class Samsung recommends for its ARC setup. Check the manuals and port labels before buying; cable replacement cannot overcome a TV or soundbar that lacks the required ARC/eARC capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A digital optical audio cable is a reasonable secondary purchase when both devices have optical ports but no compatible ARC/eARC connection. Choose it only after accepting its format and control limitations; it is not an upgrade over eARC.

Quick decision path

  1. Both devices have eARC: use the labeled eARC ports and a suitable HDMI cable; enable eARC and HDMI-CEC if required.
  2. Both have ARC but not eARC: use the ARC ports. Compressed 5.1 can work, but do not promise uncompressed or higher-bandwidth formats.
  3. Only optical is shared: use optical, select Optical/D.IN on the bar and Optical/Audio Out on the TV, and stay within the formats both devices support.
  4. There is no shared digital connection: consult the manuals for an officially supported alternative rather than relying on an analog adapter and expecting discrete 5.1.

After any change, test one known 5.1 program and verify the soundbar’s incoming-format indicator before changing several settings at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which HDMI port should I use for a soundbar?

Use the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and connect it to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT port labeled ARC, eARC or TV-ARC. A regular HDMI input is not the TV audio-return port.

Why does my 5.1 soundbar play only stereo?

The program may not include a 5.1 mix, the TV may be outputting two-channel PCM, or the ARC/eARC path may not support the selected format. Check the program’s audio track, TV digital-output setting, device compatibility and the soundbar’s incoming-format display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can optical deliver 5.1 sound?

Optical can carry supported compressed surround such as Dolby Digital 5.1, but it cannot carry some higher-bitrate formats and generally lacks HDMI-CEC control features. Use the exact TV and soundbar manuals to confirm compatibility.
