The reliable setup order is: match the monitor and graphics-card ports, connect the display to the discrete GPU, select 3840 × 2160 and the highest refresh rate Windows actually offers, enable adaptive sync when both devices support it, turn on HDR for the OLED display, optionally run Windows 11 HDR Calibration, and leave the monitor’s OLED-care routines enabled. Exact refresh-rate limits, VRR names, HDR modes, cable requirements and maintenance intervals vary by model, GPU and connection, so use the monitor and graphics-card manuals for the final specification.

What you need before connecting the monitor

A 4K OLED monitor is not a single universal configuration. The available refresh rate and features depend on the monitor’s input, the graphics card’s output, the cable, the selected color/HDR mode and sometimes Display Stream Compression (DSC). Gather these details before changing settings:

  • The monitor’s exact model number and manual, including its native resolution, input specifications, HDR capabilities, VRR support and OLED-care instructions.
  • Your graphics card model and the outputs it provides. A desktop with a discrete graphics card should normally connect the monitor to that card rather than to a motherboard video output.
  • The cable supplied with the monitor, or a replacement whose specification is documented for the exact ports and operating mode you intend to use.
  • Your Windows edition and build. The menu names below describe the current Windows 11 Settings layout; minor wording can differ in other builds.
  • The target game’s HDR and VRR options, if you plan to use those features.

Do not choose a cable solely because it is labelled “4K” or “gaming.” A cable must carry the combination of resolution, refresh rate, HDR and variable refresh rate you want through both endpoints. For example, ASUS lists DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1 on its PG27UCDM. That is a specification for that model, not a universal requirement for every 4K OLED display.

Choose the correct port and cable

Read both ends of the connection

Identify the monitor input and the graphics-card output you will use. Compare their generation and stated capabilities in the two manuals. If the monitor has several inputs, they may not all support the same maximum refresh rate, HDR format or VRR behavior. The same is true of graphics-card outputs.

Prefer the discrete graphics card

When a desktop has a separate graphics card, plug the video cable into that card’s port. A motherboard connector may be wired to integrated graphics, which can prevent the discrete GPU from driving the monitor at its intended mode. If your computer has only integrated graphics, check its processor or system documentation for the supported 4K modes before expecting a high refresh rate.

Compare connection paths before buying a cable

What to compare Why it matters What to verify
Monitor input generation Different inputs can expose different bandwidth and feature sets. The exact port specification in the monitor manual.
GPU output generation The graphics card may have a different limit from the monitor. Supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR for that output.
Cable specification and length An unsuitable or excessively long cable can prevent a high-bandwidth mode from appearing or remain stable. Documented support for the desired mode at the chosen length.
DSC requirement Some combinations require Display Stream Compression to reach their advertised mode. Whether both the monitor and GPU support DSC and whether it is automatic or selectable.
HDR and VRR at the selected mode A connection may support 4K but not every feature simultaneously. The manufacturer’s mode table, not a generic cable label.

If a mode is missing, do not force an unsupported refresh rate. Test the other documented input, try the supplied cable, and check both manuals before purchasing a replacement.

Set 4K resolution and refresh rate in Windows

Open the display’s advanced settings

  1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose Display settings, or open Settings > System > Display.
  2. If more than one monitor is connected, select the OLED panel in the diagram or with the display selector.
  3. Open Advanced display.
  4. Use the display selector at the top of the page again if necessary, then open the refresh-rate menu.
  5. Choose the highest rate that Windows lists for this monitor and connection. Apply the change and accept the confirmation prompt.

When the monitor’s specified native resolution is 4K UHD, confirm that Windows shows 3840 × 2160 in Settings > System > Display > Display resolution. Windows does not invent refresh-rate options: Microsoft Support explains that “The refresh rates that appear depend on your display and what it supports.” The list therefore reflects the current monitor, GPU, port, cable and mode combination rather than a guaranteed value printed on the monitor’s marketing page.

Check the result

Advanced display should identify the selected monitor, its current desktop resolution and the active refresh rate. If the desired rate is not listed, leave the supported option selected while troubleshooting instead of repeatedly applying an unavailable value.

Enable adaptive sync or VRR

Adaptive sync, also called variable refresh rate (VRR), lets the display vary its refresh timing to follow changing game frame rates. It is useful only when the monitor and GPU support a compatible implementation.

  1. Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) with its joystick or buttons.
  2. Find the gaming, display or input section and enable the setting named Adaptive-Sync, VRR or an equivalent model-specific label.
  3. Save the OSD change, then open your graphics driver’s display-control panel and verify that the compatible variable-refresh option is available for this monitor.
  4. Enable that driver option only if the monitor and GPU documentation confirms support. Leave unrelated synchronization modes disabled until you have established which one the two devices share.

There is no universal NVIDIA or AMD menu path or certification name that applies to every monitor. If the driver does not expose VRR, confirm that you are using the discrete GPU output, the correct input and a cable documented for the selected mode.

Turn on HDR for the OLED display

Enable HDR on the correct screen

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select the 4K OLED in the display diagram or selector. This step is essential when another monitor is attached.
  3. Open HDR (on some Windows 11 builds this appears under the selected display’s settings).
  4. Turn on Use HDR if Windows reports that the selected display supports HDR.

HDR is configured per display. Enabling it while another monitor is selected changes that monitor instead, so verify the model name before switching the toggle.

Adjust SDR content brightness separately

Windows sends SDR and HDR signals differently. With HDR enabled, ordinary desktop and SDR game content can look too dim or too bright until the SDR-content brightness control is adjusted. Set that slider while viewing familiar desktop content, then check an HDR game separately. Do not judge HDR quality from the Windows desktop alone.

If the HDR section is absent, Windows may not be detecting HDR support through the current port and cable, or the wrong display may be selected. Recheck the monitor OSD input, the GPU connection and the endpoint specifications before changing color settings.

Optionally run Windows 11 HDR Calibration

Microsoft’s HDR Calibration app is a software tool, not a requirement for using HDR. It provides three test patterns so you can set visible shadow detail, highlight detail and maximum brightness for the selected display.

  1. Install or open Windows HDR Calibration on the Windows 11 PC.
  2. Run it full screen on the OLED monitor with HDR enabled. If multiple screens are present, confirm that the pattern is displayed on the OLED.
  3. Follow the first pattern until the darkest visible detail is set without crushing nearby shadow detail.
  4. Use the second pattern to set bright detail so highlights remain visible without unnecessary clipping.
  5. Set the maximum-brightness pattern according to the instructions and the display’s behavior.
  6. Complete the color step conservatively. Stop increasing saturation when colors begin to look unnatural.
  7. Save the profile and test a game and normal desktop content. Repeat the calibration after changing the display setup, connection or major HDR configuration.

The app does not establish a need for a purchased colorimeter. A colorimeter is an optional advanced tool for people who need measured color profiling; most players can start with the Windows calibration patterns and the monitor’s documented controls.

Set the monitor’s OSD without overriding model guidance

After Windows is configured, open the monitor OSD and confirm that the selected input is the one connected to the GPU. Keep the monitor in the mode intended for HDR when HDR content is running, and avoid forcing a color mode that disables HDR or VRR. Names such as “Game,” “HDR,” “Creator” and “sRGB” are not standardized: read the manual to learn what each preset changes.

Do not copy another model’s recommended brightness, gamma, color temperature, overdrive or HDR preset. OLED panels and firmware implement those controls differently, and a setting that is useful on one display can remove a feature or distort another display’s image.

Leave OLED image-retention protection enabled

Why static content matters

OLED pixels can retain an image when a static picture remains on screen for an extended period. Dell’s support guidance for specified Alienware OLED models warns about this risk and recommends changing the video, using a screensaver or turning the monitor off. That guidance applies to the named models; it is not a measured failure rate or a universal timetable for every OLED monitor.

Use the monitor’s own maintenance routines

Keep automatic OLED-care features enabled unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs otherwise. Depending on the model, the OSD may offer routines named Pixel Refresh, Panel Refresh, compensation cycle or a similar term. Their triggers, duration, prompts and frequency differ. Start the operation only from the monitor’s own prompt or manual, and do not interrupt a required cycle by unplugging the display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you leave the PC for a long period, allow the monitor’s screensaver or sleep behavior to operate rather than leaving a static desktop, browser page or game HUD visible indefinitely. Hide persistent taskbars and other static elements only if your monitor’s software provides that option; do not disable a protection feature to preserve a preferred brightness setting.

Verify the setup in a game

  1. Start with a game that exposes separate HDR and VRR settings. Enable its HDR option only after Windows HDR is enabled.
  2. Use the game’s brightness or paper-white instructions rather than raising every slider to maximum. The correct range is game- and display-dependent.
  3. Confirm that motion remains smooth while frame rate changes. If you see tearing, flicker or repeated black screens, return to a documented supported mode and test VRR again.
  4. View a dark scene, a bright highlight and ordinary menus. This checks shadow detail, highlight handling and SDR/HDR transitions more reliably than a single desktop image.
  5. Quit the game and verify that the Windows desktop still looks normal. If it does not, recheck the SDR-content brightness control and the selected HDR display.

Troubleshoot missing modes and picture problems

The refresh-rate menu does not show the advertised maximum

  • Confirm the monitor is connected to the discrete GPU and that the intended input is selected in the OSD.
  • Check the monitor and GPU manuals for the exact port combination. A different input may have a different limit.
  • Replace an unverified cable with the supplied cable or one documented for the required resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR combination at its length.
  • Check whether the desired mode requires DSC and whether both endpoints support it.
  • Apply the highest rate Windows currently lists, then change one variable at a time. Do not force an unsupported custom mode.

HDR is missing or applies to the wrong screen

  • Select the OLED in Settings > System > Display before opening HDR settings.
  • Verify that Windows reports HDR capability for that display.
  • Check the cable, GPU output and monitor input against their manuals.
  • Disconnect the second monitor temporarily if the display selector is ambiguous, then reconnect it after HDR is enabled on the OLED.

HDR looks washed out or too dark

  • Adjust Windows’ SDR-content brightness control while viewing SDR desktop content; do not use it to compensate for an HDR game’s own brightness slider.
  • Run Windows HDR Calibration and use its three patterns rather than guessing from a bright desktop.
  • Check the monitor OSD for a mode that disables HDR or changes the input’s color behavior.
  • Test the game’s HDR toggle independently. Some games need their own HDR option enabled after Windows HDR is active.

VRR is unavailable, flickers or causes black screens

  • Verify Adaptive-Sync/VRR is enabled in the monitor OSD and that the graphics driver recognizes the same display.
  • Return to a resolution and refresh rate documented for both endpoints, then test VRR before raising the rate again.
  • Try the other documented input or the supplied cable. If the issue persists, consult the model-specific driver, firmware and support instructions rather than applying another monitor’s settings.

The monitor requests a pixel or panel refresh

Save work, follow the on-screen instruction and let the named maintenance routine complete. Do not substitute a timing from another brand or model. If the prompt repeats unexpectedly, record the exact model and firmware shown in the OSD and use the manufacturer’s support procedure.

When a replacement cable is actually justified

Buy a replacement only when the current cable cannot carry the mode you have confirmed in the monitor and GPU documentation, is damaged, or is too short for a reliable installation. Match the cable to both endpoint generations, the desired 3840 × 2160 refresh rate, HDR and VRR requirements, and its installed length. A cable that works for 4K at a lower refresh rate is not automatically suitable for a higher-rate HDR/VRR mode.

After changing cables, recheck Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, the HDR page and the monitor OSD. Windows may retain a previously selected supported rate, but it will not make an unsupported rate appear simply because a new cable is installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical final configuration

For a model whose manual specifies 3840 × 2160 as native resolution, the finished setup should show that resolution in Windows, a refresh rate that Windows lists for the connected configuration, HDR enabled for the OLED display, and VRR enabled only when both endpoints support it. Windows HDR Calibration remains optional. OLED-care features remain active, and the monitor’s own manual—not a generic internet preset—determines when Pixel Refresh, Panel Refresh or another maintenance routine runs.
