To run a 240Hz OLED monitor smoothly, connect it to a graphics output that supports the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, select the highest supported mode in your computer’s display controls, enable Adaptive-Sync or another supported VRR mode in both the monitor and graphics settings, and verify the active signal in the monitor’s on-screen display. A 240Hz label describes the panel’s capability; it does not guarantee that every computer, cable, input, resolution, or game will operate at 240Hz.

What you need to check before connecting the monitor

Find the exact model and native resolution

Start with the model number printed on the rear label, box, or monitor information screen. Look up that exact model’s official product page and manual. Two 240Hz OLED monitors can have different native resolutions, input bandwidth, HDR behavior, VRR ranges, and optional motion modes.

For example, LG identifies the 27GS93QE-B as a QHD OLED display with a 240Hz maximum refresh rate. LG also says that achieving up to 240Hz on this model requires a graphics card supporting DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1. That is a requirement for the 27GS93QE-B, not a universal rule for every 240Hz display.

Confirm the graphics card and output ports

Check the graphics card’s physical outputs and the monitor’s input specifications. The computer must be able to send the chosen resolution at 240Hz through the specific port you use. A connector that fits mechanically may still lack the required bandwidth or feature support.

  • Use a graphics-card output identified by the monitor manufacturer as suitable for the target mode.
  • Check whether the monitor’s 240Hz specification applies to DisplayPort, HDMI, or both.
  • Verify the cable supplied with the monitor before buying another one. A replacement cable is only necessary if the included cable, port combination, or required bandwidth does not meet the model’s specifications.
  • If you use a dock, adapter, receiver, KVM, or capture device, temporarily connect the monitor directly to the graphics card while troubleshooting. Each intermediate device can impose its own resolution or refresh-rate limit.

Separate refresh rate, frame rate, and VRR

Refresh rate is how often the panel can update, measured in hertz. Frame rate is how many frames the graphics card and game actually render, measured in frames per second. A 240Hz monitor can refresh at 240Hz even when a game renders fewer frames, but the game will not automatically produce 240 frames per second.

Variable refresh rate, usually called VRR or Adaptive-Sync, is a separate feature. It lets the display adjust its refresh timing to the source’s changing frame rate within a documented operating range. ASUS describes Adaptive-Sync/VRR as allowing a supported graphics source to dynamically adjust the display refresh rate according to typical content frame rates for a virtually stutter-free, low-latency update.

How to set up the monitor step by step

1. Record the supported modes from the manual

Before changing settings, note the monitor’s native resolution, maximum refresh rate, supported inputs, VRR range for each input, HDR requirements, and any feature combinations that are restricted. Keep the manual open on a phone or another screen so you can check the exact labels used by your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a setting described for one OLED model applies to another. The ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM-R manual, for instance, documents a VRR range of 40–120Hz over HDMI and 40–240Hz over DisplayPort. Those input-specific limits illustrate why the exact manual matters.

2. Connect the monitor directly to the graphics card

With the computer powered off, connect the monitor to the dedicated graphics card rather than a motherboard video output when a discrete GPU is installed. Select the cable and port combination that the monitor documentation specifies for the intended resolution and refresh rate.

On LG’s 27GS93QE-B, LG lists a graphics card with DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 support for up to 240Hz. If your card has neither interface capability, the monitor may still display an image at a lower mode, but the advertised maximum may not be available.

3. Select the correct input in the monitor OSD

Open the monitor’s on-screen display using its control button or joystick and select the input connected to the graphics card. Leave input selection on automatic only if the monitor consistently chooses the intended source. The ASUS PG27AQDM-R guide documents a manual input-selection control; other models may use different menu names.

While the OSD is open, look for an information, signal, or status page. It may show the active resolution, refresh rate, input, HDR state, and VRR state. The wording and location are model-specific.

4. Choose the native resolution in the computer’s display controls

Open the current display settings for your operating system or graphics driver and select the monitor’s supported native resolution. Then open the refresh-rate control and choose the highest mode that the monitor and graphics card report as available.

Windows and macOS change menu wording and layout between releases, and graphics-driver panels have their own paths. Use the current documentation for your operating-system and GPU vendor rather than relying on an old click path. If 240Hz is not listed, do not force an arbitrary custom mode until you have checked the monitor manual, driver documentation, cable, and input.

5. Set the intended refresh rate explicitly

After choosing the resolution, set the refresh rate to 240Hz if the mode is offered and stable. Some systems retain a lower rate after a display change, driver update, remote-session connection, or game launch, so check the setting again after installing drivers or changing ports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the display goes blank after selecting a mode, wait for the operating system’s rollback prompt or use a known-working mode to recover. Then test the next lower supported rate and investigate the connection rather than repeatedly selecting an unsupported combination.

6. Enable VRR in the monitor menu

In the monitor OSD, enable the feature named Adaptive-Sync, Variable Refresh Rate, FreeSync, G-SYNC Compatible, or a similar model-specific term. Some monitors place it under Gaming; others put it under an image or system menu. The exact label and available combinations must come from the manual.

Check the input-specific range before judging the result. On the ASUS PG27AQDM-R, VRR can cover 40–240Hz through DisplayPort but only 40–120Hz through HDMI. If a game’s frame rate leaves that range, behavior can differ from what you expect even though the monitor is advertised as a 240Hz display.

7. Enable the compatible GPU-side VRR setting

Open the graphics driver’s display or gaming settings and enable the VRR option supported by the monitor and connection. The GPU, driver version, monitor firmware, cable, and selected input all have to support the same feature.

LG lists both G-SYNC compatibility and FreeSync Premium Pro for the 27GS93QE-B, while also noting graphics-card generation and connection requirements for G-SYNC VRR. Treat that as a model-specific compatibility statement, not proof that every GPU works with every input.

8. Verify the active signal

Use three checks:

  1. Read the monitor’s information page and confirm the selected resolution, input, and refresh rate.
  2. Reopen the computer’s display controls and confirm that the active mode remains the intended one.
  3. Launch a game and observe whether motion is smooth and free of obvious tearing or stutter. Do not interpret a game’s frame rate as proof that the panel is running at 240Hz; panel refresh capability and rendered frame rate are different measurements.

If the monitor’s OSD reports 240Hz but a game renders fewer frames, the connection is still operating at the panel’s selected refresh rate. If the OSD reports 60Hz, troubleshoot the signal before changing game settings.

9. Configure game and image options conservatively

Set the game to the monitor’s selected resolution when practical, and use its frame-rate, display-mode, and HDR controls according to your priorities. Keep any frame-rate limit within the monitor’s documented VRR range if you use a limiter; the appropriate value depends on the game, GPU, and input.

Do not assume that enabling every motion feature improves smoothness. Blur-reduction or backlight-strobing-style modes can be incompatible with VRR on some monitors. OLED models can also expose HDR, brightness, pixel-shift, compensation, and panel-care controls whose behavior varies by manufacturer. Follow the exact manual before combining them.

Model Documented specification Setup implication
LG 27GS93QE-B QHD OLED, 240Hz maximum; LG specifies a graphics card with DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 for up to 240Hz. Confirm that the GPU and the selected cable/port provide the required DisplayPort or HDMI capability before expecting 240Hz.
ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM-R Manual lists a 40–120Hz VRR range over HDMI and 40–240Hz over DisplayPort. Choose the input based on the required VRR range; do not transfer one input’s limit to another monitor.
ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM Official product information demonstrates a 4K 240Hz OLED example with DisplayPort 2.1a UHBR20 and HDMI 2.1. A 4K 240Hz display can require different interface bandwidth from a QHD 240Hz display, so check the exact model before selecting a cable or GPU.

These examples are not a ranking. They show why resolution, port bandwidth, and VRR behavior must be checked together.

Why is my 240Hz monitor only showing 60Hz?

Confirm the active input and physical connection

  • Open the monitor OSD and verify that it is using the port connected to the graphics card.
  • Remove adapters, docks, receivers, and KVMs temporarily.
  • Reseat both ends of the cable and try the monitor port documented for the target mode.
  • Check the cable supplied with the monitor and the GPU’s port specification.

Check whether the GPU can drive the selected mode

Compare the graphics card’s interface capability with the monitor’s requirement at its native resolution. LG’s 27GS93QE-B example ties up-to-240Hz operation to DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 support. A card or connection that falls below the requirement may expose only lower refresh rates.

Choose the refresh rate in the computer settings

A computer can default to 60Hz even when the monitor and GPU support more. Reopen the display settings, select the monitor, and choose the highest supported refresh rate after selecting the native resolution. Recheck after driver updates, switching users, waking from sleep, or connecting another display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check input-specific limits

Some monitors expose different limits on different inputs. The PG27AQDM-R’s HDMI VRR ceiling is 120Hz while its DisplayPort VRR range reaches 240Hz. A lower mode on one input may therefore be expected rather than a defective panel.

Restore a known-good mode

If a custom resolution or overclock option caused the problem, return to the monitor’s default profile and select a documented mode. Then test the standard 240Hz setting before changing HDR, motion, or color options.

What to do when VRR is unavailable

First determine whether the problem is support, configuration, or range.

  1. Confirm that the monitor supports VRR on the selected input.
  2. Confirm that the GPU and current driver support the monitor’s VRR technology.
  3. Enable Adaptive-Sync or the model’s equivalent in the monitor OSD.
  4. Enable the compatible VRR option in the graphics settings.
  5. Check whether HDR, blur reduction, or another monitor mode disables VRR on that model.
  6. Test a direct connection and the manufacturer-specified cable.

LG’s 27GS93QE-B lists G-SYNC compatibility and FreeSync Premium Pro, but the page also identifies GPU-generation and connection conditions for G-SYNC VRR. A compatible label alone does not guarantee support for every graphics card and input combination.

  • Use the documented high-bandwidth input: On the LG 27GS93QE-B, LG identifies DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 graphics support for up to 240Hz.
  • Check VRR by input: The PG27AQDM-R example has a wider documented VRR range over DisplayPort than HDMI.
  • Check newer high-resolution models separately: ASUS’s PG27UCDM example uses DisplayPort 2.1a UHBR20 alongside HDMI 2.1, illustrating that 4K 240Hz can involve different bandwidth requirements.
  • Prefer a direct path: Eliminate adapters and intermediate devices while establishing the highest refresh rate; add them back only after the direct connection works.

HDR, motion modes, and OLED care

HDR

HDR is not automatically required for 240Hz operation. Enable it only when the monitor, operating system, graphics driver, and game are configured for it. Check the model manual for HDR picture modes and for combinations that disable other controls.

Motion and blur-reduction options

Use motion or blur-reduction modes only when the manual confirms that they can coexist with your chosen refresh rate and VRR mode. If enabling one makes VRR disappear or causes flicker, return to the previous profile and choose which behavior matters more for that game.

OLED panel-care controls

OLED monitors commonly provide model-specific care features, but the available controls and recommended schedule are not universal. Follow the exact manual for pixel-shift, compensation, screen-protection, standby, and related options. Do not disable a protective feature simply to preserve a custom gaming profile unless the manufacturer documents that behavior.

LG’s support page for the 27GR95QE-B lists an owner’s manual dated November 20, 2023, and a quick guide dated March 13, 2023. Those are document dates, not performance measurements; use the current manual for your own model because menus and firmware can change.

A reliable verification checklist

  • Exact monitor model and native resolution identified.
  • Graphics card output matches the monitor’s documented requirement.
  • Monitor is connected directly to the GPU with a suitable cable.
  • Correct input selected in the monitor OSD.
  • Native resolution selected in computer display controls.
  • 240Hz selected when the mode is offered and stable.
  • VRR enabled in the monitor and compatible GPU settings.
  • Input-specific VRR range checked in the manual.
  • Monitor information screen confirms the active resolution and refresh rate.
  • HDR, blur reduction, and OLED-care options configured according to the model manual.

When a hardware upgrade is actually necessary

Do not buy a new GPU or cable solely because the monitor is labeled 240Hz. Upgrade only after identifying the limiting component. A replacement may be justified when the current GPU lacks the interface required by the monitor, cannot expose the target mode at the native resolution, or does not support the desired VRR technology. Likewise, replace a cable only when the supplied cable is missing, defective, too short for your setup, or not rated for the documented connection.

The practical goal is not to force a universal recipe. It is to make the monitor, GPU, input, cable, operating-system mode, VRR range, and game settings agree with one another. Once the monitor OSD and computer both report the intended mode, remaining differences in smoothness usually come from the game’s rendered frame rate or from model-specific feature interactions rather than from the 240Hz label itself.
