To run a monitor at 210Hz, connect it to a GPU output and input that support the monitor’s target resolution and refresh rate, enable any model-specific high-refresh or overclock option, then select 210Hz in Windows under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. For smoother motion, turn on Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync or G-SYNC in both the monitor and the graphics-driver control panel when your hardware supports it. A 210Hz setting cannot create capability that the monitor, port, cable, GPU or game does not support.

What 210Hz changes—and what it does not

Refresh rate is the number of times per second a display redraws its image. At 210Hz, a new refresh is available about every 4.76 milliseconds, compared with about 6.94 milliseconds at 144Hz and 4.17 milliseconds at 240Hz. The shorter interval can make camera movement and cursor motion look clearer, provided the game and graphics card can deliver frames quickly enough.

Refresh rate is separate from frame rate. Windows can run the desktop at 210Hz while a game renders 130 frames per second, or 260 frames per second. The display will still refresh at its selected mode, but the game’s frame output determines how often a new rendered frame is ready. Variable-refresh-rate (VRR) technology can match the display’s refresh timing to changing frame rates and reduce tearing and stutter when all components are compatible.

There is no universal 210Hz mode. A monitor may expose 210Hz only at one resolution, through one input, or after an overclock setting is enabled. Treat the exact model’s manual and on-screen display (OSD) as the authority.

Check the monitor’s exact 210Hz specification first

Find the complete model number on the rear label, the monitor’s information page, or its original documentation. Then verify the following before changing Windows settings.

Check What to confirm Why it matters
Target resolution The resolution paired with 210Hz, such as 2560×1440 or 1920×1080 Maximum refresh often changes when resolution changes.
Native or overclocked mode Whether 210Hz is listed as native, OC, or overclocked An overclocked mode may require an OSD switch, reboot, and specific input.
Supported input The HDMI or DisplayPort socket that carries the target combination Different sockets on the same monitor can have different limits.
GPU requirement The graphics output and driver requirements stated by the monitor maker The monitor cannot exceed the signal delivered by the GPU.
VRR range FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync or G-SYNC range and connection type VRR may work on fewer inputs or within a narrower range than 210Hz itself.
Required restart Whether enabling high refresh or overclocking requires a restart Some displays do not add the new mode until they reboot.

For a concrete example, ASUS lists its TUF Gaming VG27AQ5AZ as a 27-inch, 2560×1440 display with a 210Hz OC mode. That specification applies to that model and is not evidence that another 210Hz monitor uses the same setting or port.

Connect the monitor to the right GPU output

Use a direct connection from the dedicated graphics card to the monitor. Avoid routing the cable through a motherboard video output when a discrete GPU is installed; the motherboard output may be connected to the processor’s integrated graphics and may expose fewer modes.

  1. Turn off the computer and monitor if the manual recommends doing so when changing cables.
  2. Identify the GPU socket and the monitor input specified for the desired resolution and refresh rate.
  3. Connect a cable that meets both devices’ published requirements. Use the cable supplied with the monitor when it is rated for the target mode.
  4. On a multi-monitor system, label which physical cable belongs to the 210Hz display so you can select the correct screen in Windows later.

NVIDIA’s Adaptive-Sync instructions for trying VRR on an unvalidated display specify a GeForce GTX 10-series-or-newer GPU connected over DisplayPort. NVIDIA also notes that some monitors require DisplayPort 1.2 or higher. AMD’s FreeSync enablement guidance likewise calls for DisplayPort 1.2 or higher where applicable. These are VRR setup notes, not a universal statement that every 210Hz signal needs DisplayPort 1.2 or that every cable marked with that version will support every resolution. Follow the monitor and GPU specifications for your exact combination.

Enable the monitor’s high-refresh or overclock mode

Open the monitor OSD with its joystick or buttons. Menu names vary, but look for entries such as Overclock, Refresh Rate, DisplayPort version, Gaming or High Refresh. Enable only the option described in the model’s manual.

  1. Open the OSD and locate the high-refresh or overclock control.
  2. Set it to the manufacturer’s documented value, such as 210Hz or On.
  3. Accept any warning about overclocking.
  4. Restart the monitor or computer if prompted.
  5. Keep the monitor at its specified resolution while testing the new mode.

An overclocked specification is not a guarantee that every unit, graphics card, cable or resolution combination will expose the mode. If the screen flickers, loses signal or returns to a lower rate, disable the overclock and use the highest stable mode documented for that input.

Select 210Hz in Windows 11 or Windows 10

Windows chooses from the modes the display reports for the current connection and resolution. Microsoft explains that an asterisk beside a rate indicates that selecting it will change resolution to achieve that rate, so inspect both values rather than choosing the largest number blindly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose Display settings.
  2. If more than one monitor is connected, click the monitor you want to configure.
  3. Scroll to Related settings and open Advanced display.
  4. Check the selected display’s current resolution and refresh rate.
  5. Open the Choose a refresh rate menu and select 210Hz if it is listed for the intended resolution.
  6. Accept the confirmation prompt and wait for Windows to apply the mode.
  7. Return to Advanced display and verify that the reported refresh rate is 210Hz.

If 210Hz is absent, do not force a custom mode immediately. First check the monitor OSD, input, cable and resolution. A rate missing from Windows usually means the display’s reported capabilities do not include that combination on the current connection.

Turn on Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync or G-SYNC

VRR is a separate feature from selecting 210Hz. AMD describes FreeSync as synchronizing a display’s refresh rate with the frame rate of compatible graphics cards, reducing or eliminating artifacts such as input latency, tearing and stuttering. The monitor, GPU, driver, connection and game must all support the feature.

AMD Radeon and FreeSync

  1. Open the monitor OSD and enable FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync.
  2. If the model’s AMD instructions mention an Anti-Blur conflict, disable Anti-Blur while testing FreeSync.
  3. Set the monitor’s DisplayPort mode to 1.2 or higher when the manual calls for it.
  4. In Radeon Software, open Settings and choose Display.
  5. Select the 210Hz monitor and confirm that AMD FreeSync is shown as enabled.

AMD notes that labels and available controls differ by monitor. FreeSync may be delivered over DisplayPort or HDMI on certified displays, so do not assume that one connector works identically to another.

NVIDIA GeForce and G-SYNC Compatible mode

  1. Enable Adaptive-Sync in the monitor OSD.
  2. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  3. Choose Set up G-SYNC in the navigation pane.
  4. Enable Enable G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible.
  5. Choose whether it should operate in full-screen mode only or in windowed and full-screen modes.
  6. Select the correct display, apply the settings, and test a game.

NVIDIA’s procedure for an unvalidated display specifies DisplayPort and a GeForce GTX 10-series-or-newer GPU, with DisplayPort 1.2 or higher required by some monitors. NVIDIA cautions that an unvalidated display may work fully, work partially or fail to operate with G-SYNC Compatible mode. If enabling it causes flicker or signal loss, turn it off and use the monitor’s documented VRR mode.

Configure the game for a 210Hz display

Open the game’s video settings and select the monitor that is connected at 210Hz. Use the display mode appropriate for your setup, such as exclusive full-screen or borderless window, and verify that the game reports the intended resolution.

  • Set the in-game refresh-rate option to 210Hz when the game exposes one.
  • Use the game’s frame-rate limiter if you want a predictable ceiling. The useful limit depends on your VRR range, latency preference and system performance; there is no single value that is correct for every game.
  • Do not assume a desktop setting guarantees 210 frames per second. Rendering speed depends on the game, resolution, quality settings, CPU and GPU.
  • If VRR is enabled, watch for stable frame pacing rather than chasing a short-lived peak frame-rate number.

When a game appears capped at a lower rate, check its own refresh setting, the selected display, any frame limiter, vertical-sync option and the driver profile for that game.

Tune overdrive, blur reduction and HDR carefully

High-refresh monitors often include Overdrive, Motion Blur Reduction, ELMB, strobing or HDR controls. These options interact differently across models and refresh rates. A setting that reduces visible trailing can create inverse ghosting, flicker or reduced brightness at another frame rate.

Change one option at a time while viewing a familiar moving scene. Keep notes of the original values so you can return to a stable configuration. Do not enable a strobing mode and VRR together unless the manual explicitly says that combination is supported.

ASUS describes Variable Overdrive on the TUF Gaming VG27AQ5AZ as dynamically changing overdrive as frame rates fluctuate, while allowing the user to choose an overall strength. That is a manufacturer description for that model, not an independent test or a universal recommendation for all 210Hz displays.

HDR is also model-specific. Enable it only when the game, Windows display settings and monitor are all configured for HDR, and disable it if desktop colors or brightness become unsuitable for your normal use.

What to do when 210Hz is missing in Windows

1. Confirm the selected monitor and resolution

In Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, verify that Windows is showing the intended monitor, not a second screen. Check the resolution beside the refresh-rate menu. If the current resolution is different from the one paired with 210Hz in the manual, change it first and reopen the refresh list.

2. Check the OSD for an overclock switch

Look for the model’s documented overclock or high-refresh control and apply any required reboot. On the ASUS example, 210Hz is explicitly marked “OC,” demonstrating why a product page’s maximum rate may not appear until a monitor setting is enabled. Do not copy that menu path to another brand or model without its manual.

3. Try the specified input and a known-good cable

Move the cable to the input identified by the monitor documentation for 210Hz. If the existing cable is damaged, unusually long or not rated for the signal, test with the supplied cable or another cable that meets the exact monitor and GPU specifications. Replacing a cable is justified only when the current connection fails those requirements; a new cable cannot overcome a port’s bandwidth limit.

4. Check the GPU output and driver

Make sure the cable is plugged into the discrete GPU output that supports the target mode. Install the current official graphics driver for the GPU. If the Radeon or NVIDIA control panel is missing its display or VRR page, reinstalling the official driver can restore the control panel components, subject to the GPU’s support.

5. Disable Windows Dynamic Refresh Rate while testing

Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) requires VRR support and a display rated at least 120Hz. Microsoft notes that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games and suggests disabling it as a mitigation. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, turn off Dynamic Refresh Rate if it is enabled, then test the game again.

6. Recover from flicker, black screens or an unstable mode

  1. Wait for Windows to revert the display mode if a confirmation prompt times out.
  2. If the screen remains blank, reconnect the cable or restart the computer using a known-supported mode.
  3. Disable the monitor’s overclock and return to the last stable refresh rate.
  4. Turn off VRR temporarily to determine whether Adaptive-Sync is causing the instability.
  5. Re-enable features one at a time and stop at the highest stable combination documented for the monitor.

Comparison point Questions to ask
Resolution at 210Hz Is the target rate available at the resolution you actually plan to play?
Native versus overclocked Is 210Hz guaranteed as a native mode, or does it require an OC toggle?
Input support Which HDMI and DisplayPort sockets support the target mode?
VRR certification and range Does the monitor support FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync or G-SYNC, and over what frame-rate range?
Overdrive behavior Are there adjustable or variable overdrive controls, and do they interact with VRR?
Blur-reduction compatibility Can strobing or blur reduction operate with VRR, or must one be disabled?
Operating requirements Does enabling the maximum rate require a specific cable, driver, OSD mode or restart?

For reference, the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ5AZ specification cited above lists QHD resolution, 210Hz overclocked operation, FreeSync Premium, VESA Adaptive-Sync, DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0, ELMB Sync and Variable Overdrive. Those are specifications for that particular model, not proof that it is the best choice or that another monitor supports the same feature combinations.

Practical checklist

  • Read the manual for the full monitor model and identify the resolution paired with 210Hz.
  • Confirm whether 210Hz is native or overclocked and enable the required OSD option.
  • Use the documented GPU output, monitor input and cable.
  • Select the intended display and resolution in Windows Advanced display.
  • Choose 210Hz and verify that Windows reports it after applying the mode.
  • Enable FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync or G-SYNC in the monitor and GPU settings when supported.
  • Configure the game’s display mode and frame-rate behavior separately from the Windows setting.
  • Test overdrive, HDR and blur-reduction options individually rather than assuming a universal best value.
  • If the mode is missing or unstable, revert to a documented stable setting before changing more variables.

Bottom line

A properly configured 210Hz monitor requires a supported monitor mode, a compatible input and GPU connection, the correct Windows refresh selection, and—if desired—matching VRR settings on the display and graphics card. The exact port, cable, overclock switch and feature combinations are model-specific. Verify those details in the manual, then confirm the active resolution and refresh rate in Windows before tuning the game.
