To get a Twitch alert when The Game Awards or another live event starts, follow the event’s official Twitch broadcaster or an authorized co-streamer, then set that channel to Always or Go Live Only. In Twitch, open Settings → Notifications → Manage Channel Notifications, select the channel, choose the alert mode, and enable the Live category for the destination you want. On a phone, also allow notifications for Twitch in the operating system. Following a channel by itself does not guarantee an alert.
What you need to configure
Twitch separates four controls that are easy to confuse:
- Following: adds a channel to your followed list, but does not promise an alert for every broadcast.
- Channel notification mode: determines how much activity Twitch should report for that followed channel.
- Notification category: controls whether events such as a channel going live are eligible for delivery.
- Destination and delivery: determine whether the alert appears on Twitch, arrives as a phone push notification, or is sent by email.
The labels and paths below match Twitch’s documented settings as accessed on October 16, 2026. Twitch can revise interface wording, but the channel-level and category-level controls remain the important pieces.
Channel notification modes

Twitch’s 2025 product announcement describes Always this way: “Selecting this setting guarantees you will receive all notifications for a channel, including every Go Live message, VOD update, and clip notification for example.” For a one-time event, Go Live Only is usually the practical choice; use Always if you also want post-stream updates.

Find the correct Twitch channel for the event
An alert can only fire for a Twitch channel that is actually broadcasting. Event organizers may use an official channel, an authorized co-streamer, or both. The available channels can change from one edition to the next.
The Game Awards
For the 2025 event, Twitch announced that The Game Awards would be live on Twitch and that anyone could co-stream it. A future edition may use a different official account or publish a different list of approved co-streamers. Before following a channel, check the current event announcement and confirm that the account is the one intended to carry the broadcast.
Other live events
The same method applies to esports finals, game showcases, premieres, charity streams, and similar scheduled broadcasts. Look for the organizer’s current Twitch announcement, then choose the official broadcaster or a co-streamer explicitly identified by that organizer. Do not assume that a similarly named channel is carrying the event.

Follow before changing alert settings
- Open the event announcement or the broadcaster’s Twitch page.
- Confirm the channel name and that it is associated with the current edition of the event.
- Select Follow on that channel.
- If the event lists several authorized co-streamers, follow the one you plan to watch. You can follow more than one approved channel if you want alternatives, but each channel has its own notification mode.
Set a Twitch event notification on desktop
- Sign in to Twitch in your browser.
- Open your account menu and choose Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Expand Manage Channel Notifications.
- Find the followed event broadcaster or co-streamer. Use the channel list rather than changing a general notification switch; the event setting belongs to the individual channel.
- Choose Go Live Only for a start alert, or choose Always for every notification Twitch offers for that channel. Leave it on Personalized only if you accept that Twitch may skip an alert based on your viewing habits. Off disables alerts for that channel.
- Review the notification categories under On Twitch, Mobile, and Email. Make sure Live is enabled for each destination you intend to use.
The channel mode and the Live category are separate. Selecting Go Live Only does not help if the Live category is disabled for the destination you are checking.

Set the alert in the Twitch mobile app
- Open the Twitch app and tap your profile or display icon.
- Go to Account Settings → Notifications → Manage Channel Notifications.
- Tap the event broadcaster or authorized co-streamer.
- Select Go Live Only, Always, Personalized, or Off, according to the type of alert you want.
- As an alternative, open the channel page and use its bell control when that control is available.
- In the phone’s operating-system settings, allow notifications for Twitch. An in-app setting cannot override a phone-level block.
Email delivery has one additional requirement: the email address on your Twitch account must be verified. If the address is unverified, enabling Email in Twitch will not make a message arrive.
Choose where Twitch should deliver the alert

Understand Smart Delivery
Twitch’s Smart Delivery feature may send one alert to the place where Twitch detects that you are active. For example, it can favor an onsite alert when you are using Twitch instead of sending separate messages to every enabled destination. This behavior can make it look as if a destination is broken even though Twitch delivered the notification elsewhere.
If you want Twitch to consider all enabled destinations instead of choosing one active location, open Twitch notification settings and turn Smart Delivery off. Twitch Help describes the control as a radio-button setting under Smart Delivery: “If you’d like to receive notifications on all channels regardless of where you’re active, you can turn smart delivery off by heading over to your Notifications Settings and toggling the radio button under Smart Delivery to off.”

For a scheduled premiere such as The Game Awards, the first row is the safest when the start time matters more than notification volume.
Troubleshoot a missing Twitch go-live notification
Check the following in order. Changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify the cause.
1. Confirm the channel actually carried the event
Open the current event announcement and compare its broadcaster or co-streamer name with the channel you followed. An older edition, an unofficial account, or a co-streamer who did not participate will not produce the expected alert.
2. Check the channel mode
In Settings → Notifications → Manage Channel Notifications, locate the channel. If it is set to Off, no alert is configured. If it is set to Personalized, Twitch may have decided not to send the message. Use Go Live Only or Always when the broadcast start is important.

3. Check the Live category for the destination that failed
Inspect On Twitch, Mobile, and Email separately. A channel can be correctly configured while the Live category is disabled for Mobile or Email. Enable Live on the destination you are testing, then wait for the next broadcast rather than assuming a past alert can be resent.
4. Check Smart Delivery
If one destination received the alert and another did not, Smart Delivery may have selected the place where Twitch detected you were active. Turn Smart Delivery off when you want all enabled destinations considered. This is a delivery choice, not a change to the channel’s Always or Go Live Only mode.
5. Check phone-level permissions
On the phone, open the operating system’s app-notification settings, select Twitch, and verify that notifications are allowed. Also check any system-level focus, do-not-disturb, or notification-summary feature that could hide or delay push messages. Twitch cannot display a push alert when the operating system blocks the app.

For email alerts, verify that the email address associated with Twitch is confirmed. Email notifications require both verification and the Email category being enabled; satisfying only one of those conditions is not enough.

7. Make sure you are testing the right account
Notification settings belong to the signed-in Twitch account. If you followed the channel in a browser but are checking a different account in the mobile app, the app will not inherit that followed channel’s configuration.
8. Consider the event’s broadcast status
A notification is generated when the selected channel goes live. A delayed schedule, a cancelled stream, or an event that appears only on another broadcaster’s channel will not trigger the channel you configured. For co-streams, verify which approved account is actually starting the stream.

- Read the latest official event announcement and identify the official Twitch broadcaster or an authorized co-streamer.
- Follow that account and open its channel notification control.
- Choose Go Live Only for a clean start alert or Always if you also want VOD and clip notifications.
- Enable Live under every destination you intend to check.
- If you need alerts on all enabled destinations, disable Smart Delivery.
- On a phone, allow Twitch notifications in the operating system; for email, verify the Twitch address.
- Repeat the channel check if the organizers publish an updated broadcaster or co-streamer list.
Use the same method for other live broadcasts
Esports finals, showcases, premieres, charity streams, and similar events use the same Twitch notification model. The event name does not change the settings. What changes is the channel that is authorized to broadcast and the date or schedule announced by the organizer.
For each event, identify the current broadcaster first, then configure that channel’s mode, Live category, destination, and Smart Delivery behavior. If several co-streamers are authorized, configure only the account you intend to watch or set up more than one when you want alternate coverage. Each account remains an independent notification source.
