Before placing a Coinbase trade, check your account’s purchase and deposit limits, then create a price alert for the asset you are watching. In the Coinbase app, alerts require the asset to be on your watchlist, and an alert only notifies you when a condition is met—it never submits a buy or sell order. Account limits are personal and can differ by payment method, location, account activity, and region, so use the values shown in your signed-in account rather than a generic figure.

What you need to check before trading

Coinbase has two different kinds of limits that are easy to confuse:

  • Account purchase or deposit limits: the capacity Coinbase assigns to your account for a particular payment type. These are displayed inside your account and are not universal.
  • Order price controls: instructions attached to an individual order, such as a limit price or stop price. They determine when an order may execute, not how much your account is allowed to purchase or deposit.

Review both before trading. An account may have enough purchase capacity but still have an order that cannot execute because its price condition is not met. Conversely, a valid order can be delayed or rejected if the account, payment method, product, or region does not support it.

Coinbase says available settings, products, labels, and limits can vary by region and account. The paths below reflect Coinbase’s documented app and web navigation; your signed-in interface may use slightly different wording.

Where to see your Coinbase account limits

In the mobile app

  1. Open the Coinbase app menu.
  2. Select Profile & Settings.
  3. Tap Limits.

The Limits screen shows the values associated with the payment types available to your account. Check the relevant row before initiating a purchase or deposit, especially if you are switching payment methods.

On the web

  1. Sign in to Coinbase.
  2. Select your profile icon.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Open Account limits.

Use the web page to identify which payment type a displayed limit applies to. A bank-linked method and another payment method can have different capacities, so do not assume that the largest number shown applies to every funding route.

Why your limit is different from someone else’s

Coinbase states that purchase and deposit limits can vary with location and payment method. The company also identifies account activity, trading history, payment type, and region as factors that can affect limits. These values may change as the account or payment relationship changes. A figure reported by another customer, an old screenshot, or a general web article is not a reliable substitute for your own Limits page.

What happens if you are eligible for an increase

If Coinbase determines that your account is eligible for a higher limit, the next steps appear in Account limits. Treat that as an eligibility path, not a promise: an increase is not guaranteed, and the available process can depend on your account and location. Coinbase also describes replenishment for daily and weekly limits in relation to transaction timing. Check the current Coinbase help information for your region and the timing shown in your account before planning a time-sensitive transfer.

Set a Coinbase price alert in the mobile app

Coinbase’s documented mobile flow starts with a watchlist. An asset that is not watchlisted will not send the price alert described in this workflow.

  1. Find the asset. Use search and select the stock or cryptocurrency you want to monitor.
  2. Add it to your watchlist. Tap the star icon on the asset page.
  3. Open alert setup. Select the bell-plus icon, then choose Add Alert.
  4. Choose the trigger direction. Select whether the notification should fire when the price moves above or below your target.
  5. Enter the target price. Type the level you want Coinbase to monitor.
  6. Save the alert. Confirm the setting before leaving the asset page.

The above-and-below choice matters. An “above” alert is for a move through a higher threshold; a “below” alert is for a move through a lower threshold. Set the direction that matches the decision you intend to make when you receive the notification.

Choose how Coinbase delivers alerts

After creating an alert, review the notification channels enabled for your account:

  1. Open the app menu.
  2. Choose Account & Settings.
  3. Open Notification Settings.

Coinbase separates predetermined Price Alerts from Custom Alerts. Where available, you can switch push notifications, in-app notifications, email, or a combination of those channels. The exact switches displayed depend on the alert type and your account.

Check your phone’s operating-system notification permission as well as Coinbase’s own settings if a push notification does not appear. Email and in-app delivery are separate channels; enabling one does not necessarily enable the others.

What a price alert does—and does not do

Feature What it does What it does not do
Price alert Notifies you after the selected price condition is met for a watchlisted asset. Does not submit, modify, or cancel a buy or sell order.
Account purchase/deposit limit Shows the capacity Coinbase assigns to your account and payment type. Does not set the price at which an individual order executes.
Limit order Instructs Coinbase to seek execution at a specified price constraint. Does not guarantee a fill merely because the market later displays that price.
Stop-limit order Activates a limit order after a specified stop condition is reached. Does not guarantee that the activated limit order will fill.

An alert is therefore a reminder to reassess the market, funding, and order details. You must still open Coinbase and place an order yourself. Coinbase describes alerts as notifications rather than investment advice.

Understand order controls before you place a trade

Limit orders

A limit order includes a specified price constraint. You decide the price at which you are willing to buy or sell, and Coinbase attempts execution according to the order’s conditions and available market liquidity. If the market does not reach the required conditions, the order can remain open without filling. Even when a displayed market price touches a target, a complete execution is not assured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop-limit orders

A stop-limit order has two stages. The stop price is the trigger. Once that condition is reached, Coinbase activates a limit order using the specified limit price. Because the resulting order is still a limit order, it can remain unfilled if the market moves away before matching your limit.

This distinction is important when planning exits. A stop condition starts the instruction; it is not the same as guaranteed execution at the stop price.

Take-profit, stop-loss, and bracket instructions

Coinbase’s Advanced Trade documentation also describes take-profit/stop-loss orders and bracket orders as ways to specify exit levels. These are order instructions, not account-limit settings. Availability can vary by product and region, so confirm that the control appears in your own trading interface before relying on it.

Price bands and product availability

Coinbase applies price bands at order entry. The applicable band and the order types you can use may depend on the product and your region. If an order form rejects a price, read the message shown in the form and verify the current Coinbase guidance for your market rather than repeatedly submitting a different value at random.

How account limits and order limits interact

Suppose your account’s Limits page shows enough purchase capacity for a planned transaction. That only addresses the funding or purchase allowance. You must still choose an order type and satisfy its price conditions. The reverse is also true: a carefully chosen limit order cannot bypass an account or payment-method restriction.

Keep these questions separate when diagnosing a problem:

  • Can I fund or purchase this amount? Check Limits or Account limits.
  • At what price should the order execute? Choose a market, limit, stop-limit, or another available order instruction.
  • Has the order actually filled? Inspect order status; do not infer completion from an alert or from a brief price display.

Open orders can reserve your funds

Coinbase’s order-management documentation explains that open orders can hold funds. Until an order is filled, canceled, or otherwise released according to its status, the reserved amount may not be available for another purchase or withdrawal. This can make your available balance appear lower than your total balance.

Open orders may also be partially filled. A partial fill means only part of the requested amount executed; the remainder can stay open under the order’s conditions. Check the order details to distinguish a completed order from one that has filled only in part.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect or cancel an open order

  1. Open Coinbase’s order-management or orders view for the product you traded.
  2. Review each order’s status and filled quantity.
  3. Identify any remaining open amount and the funds associated with it.
  4. Cancel the order if you no longer want the outstanding instruction, using the cancellation control shown for that product.
  5. Recheck the available balance after cancellation and allow the account interface to update.

Cancellation prevents the remaining instruction from executing, but it does not change the account purchase limit shown in Settings. If an order has already filled, canceling the remaining portion cannot reverse the executed trade.

A practical pre-trade workflow

1. Confirm the account and payment context

Sign in to the intended Coinbase account and open Limits on mobile or Account limits on the web. Note the payment type associated with the amount you intend to use. If the account has several methods, make sure you are comparing the correct one.

2. Decide whether you need a notification or an order instruction

Use an alert when you want Coinbase to tell you that a price condition occurred and you plan to decide manually. Use a limit, stop-limit, take-profit/stop-loss, or bracket instruction only when you understand the execution conditions and are prepared for an order to remain open or fill only partially.

3. Add the asset to your watchlist before creating the alert

In the mobile app, search for the asset, tap the star, and then use the bell-plus icon to add the alert. Confirm the above-or-below direction and target before saving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Verify delivery channels

Open Account & Settings and Notification Settings. Confirm the relevant Price Alerts or Custom Alerts switches and enable the channels you will actually monitor. A notification channel is useful only if you can receive and notice it.

5. Review the order before submitting

  • Check the asset and trading pair.
  • Check whether the instruction is a limit, stop-limit, or another available type.
  • Confirm the amount, stop condition, and limit price where applicable.
  • Consider whether the order could remain open and reserve funds.
  • Review any price-band or regional availability message shown by Coinbase.

6. Monitor status rather than assuming execution

After submission, use the orders view to verify whether the order is open, partially filled, filled, or canceled. A price alert, a market move, or an order submission confirmation is not proof that the entire requested amount executed.

Troubleshooting common problems

The Limits page shows a value I did not expect

Check the payment type, location, and account context first. Coinbase says limits can reflect account activity, trading history, payment type, and region. If an increase option is shown, follow the steps displayed in Account limits; do not assume approval is automatic.

I cannot find Add Alert

Open the asset’s page in the mobile app and add the asset to your watchlist with the star icon first. Then look for the bell-plus icon and Add Alert. The documented flow is watchlist first, alert second.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

I created an alert but received nothing

Verify that the asset remains watchlisted, that the target direction and price are correct, and that the relevant Price Alerts or Custom Alerts channel is enabled in Notification Settings. Also check device-level notification permissions and email filtering for the channel you selected.

The alert arrived, but no trade happened

That is expected. A price alert is notification-only. Open Coinbase and place an order if, after reviewing the market and your plan, you decide to trade.

My limit order is still open

A limit order may not fill if the market does not satisfy its price constraint or if available liquidity is insufficient. Review the order status and remaining quantity. If you no longer want the instruction, cancel the open portion from order management.

My stop-limit order triggered but did not fill completely

Reaching the stop condition activates the limit order; it does not guarantee a match. The market may move beyond your limit price, leaving the order open or only partially filled. Inspect the resulting order and decide whether to leave, modify, or cancel it according to the controls Coinbase provides for that product.

Limits, alerts, and orders: a quick decision guide

If your goal is to… Use this Coinbase feature Remember
Find out how much you can purchase or deposit Limits / Account limits The value is account- and payment-specific.
Be notified when an asset crosses a chosen price Mobile price alert Add the asset to your watchlist first; no order is placed.
Seek execution at a chosen price Limit order It can remain open or fill partially.
Activate a limit order after a trigger Stop-limit order The stop activates the limit; neither stage guarantees a full fill.
Define planned exit levels using advanced instructions Take-profit/stop-loss or bracket order, where available Availability and labels vary by product and region.

Regional and account-specific cautions

Do not copy a limit, order type, or navigation label from another country or account and assume it applies to you. Coinbase’s documented features can differ by region, product, payment method, and account eligibility. The signed-in screens are the authoritative place to see your current limits, while the current Coinbase help material for your region explains operational details and availability.

Before a time-sensitive transaction, leave room for these differences. Confirm the funding limit, alert channel, order type, and order status in the same account you intend to use. This prevents the most common category error: treating a personal account limit, a notification threshold, and an order price as if they were the same control.
