Save a Vivid Friction image to your iPhone’s Photos library, then open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos. Select the image, make any available adjustments, tap Add, and choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen.
The same wallpaper gallery can also be opened by touching and holding the Lock Screen and tapping the Add button. The instructions below use Apple’s current iOS 26 labels.
What “Vivid Friction” means
Vivid Friction is reported as a four-image iPhone wallpaper series credited by iDownloadBlog to graphic artist @wallsbyjfl. The publication describes the artwork as brush-stroke texture combined with gradients between contrasting colors. It also says the four mobile images were cut from one larger landscape composition, so the brush strokes continue across the images when they are viewed side by side.

The practical consequence is simple: treat Vivid Friction as a set of downloadable images, not as a special iPhone wallpaper feature or an App Store installation. You use Apple’s normal custom-photo wallpaper workflow.
Before you begin
Choose one of the four images
Open the iDownloadBlog article and select the Vivid Friction image you want to use. Because the collection is described as four slices of a larger landscape image, you may prefer a particular color combination or brush pattern on its own. If you intend to use different images on different wallpaper setups, save each one separately so all four are available in Photos.
Save the image to Photos
The image must be available to the iPhone’s Photos picker. Download or save your chosen file, then confirm that it appears in the Photos library before starting the wallpaper setup. Apple’s custom-wallpaper instructions assume that the picture can be selected from Photos; an image that is only visible in a browser tab or another app has not yet completed this step.
Know what is and is not specified
No source for this collection states a required iPhone model, minimum display resolution, exact image dimensions, or file type. Do not rely on a supposed “correct” Vivid Friction resolution found elsewhere. Let the wallpaper preview show how the saved file fits your particular iPhone, and use the available controls there rather than trying to force an undocumented crop.
Use the current Apple labels
Apple’s current iPhone guide labels the main route Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos. The wording can differ on older iOS releases, but the steps in this article follow the iOS 26 guide. If your phone presents a different label, look for the equivalent option to add a new wallpaper from your photo library.

Set Vivid Friction from Settings
This is the most direct route when you already saved the artwork in Photos.
- Open Settings. Find and launch the built-in Settings app on the iPhone.
- Open Wallpaper. Scroll through Settings and tap Wallpaper. This page shows the current wallpaper setup and the control for adding another one.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper. This opens Apple’s wallpaper gallery, where you can choose a built-in design or a personal picture.
- Choose Photos. Tap Photos in the gallery. The iPhone opens the photo picker so you can browse the image you saved from the Vivid Friction collection.
- Select the Vivid Friction image. Tap the desired image. The phone loads it into the wallpaper preview. If you saved more than one slice, compare them in Photos first or return to the picker and choose a different file.
- Review the preview. Check the Lock Screen preview and any customization controls Apple presents. Adjust the image only if the available controls produce a better composition; there is no published Vivid Friction-specific positioning requirement.
- Tap Add. Apple’s guide instructs you to tap Add after choosing and adjusting the image. This confirms the new wallpaper setup and presents the screen-choice options.
- Choose how to apply it. Tap Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the image on both the Lock Screen and Home Screen. Tap Customize Home Screen if the Home Screen should have a separate appearance.
After the final choice, leave Settings and check both screens. Looking at each screen matters because the two options create different results: a pair uses the selected image for both, while Home Screen customization lets you make a separate Home Screen design.

Apple gives the decision immediately after you tap Add. Use the option that matches how much visual continuity you want.

Apple explicitly documents both choices in its iPhone wallpaper guide, Change the wallpaper on iPhone. The four-image series does not require a particular choice. If you want to test the artwork on the Lock Screen first, use the separate-screen route; if the same brush texture works well behind your icons, use the pair.
Use the Lock Screen shortcut instead
You do not have to begin in Settings. Apple also supports opening the wallpaper gallery directly from the Lock Screen.

- Wake the iPhone and display the Lock Screen.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen until the wallpaper gallery appears.
- Tap the Add button.
- Choose the option for a photo, select the saved Vivid Friction image, and review the preview.
- Tap Add, then choose either Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen.
This shortcut is useful when you are already looking at the Lock Screen and want to create another wallpaper configuration. Apple also describes changing an existing wallpaper through Settings > Wallpaper, so the Settings route remains available if the touch-and-hold gesture does not open the gallery.
How to judge the preview
Check the subject of the crop
Because Vivid Friction is described as a slice from a larger landscape image, the composition may look different on a tall phone display than it does in the article’s download view. Before tapping Add, inspect which brush strokes and color areas remain visible in the preview. The source material does not provide fixed dimensions or a guaranteed crop for every iPhone, so the preview is the reliable way to evaluate the result on your device.
Look at both wallpaper contexts
If you choose a pair, inspect the Lock Screen and Home Screen after setup. The Lock Screen and Home Screen have different content over them, so a detail that looks clear on an uncluttered Lock Screen may be less comfortable behind app icons. If that contrast matters to you, choose Customize Home Screen rather than committing both screens to the same image.
Do not mistake a preview difference for a bad download
A composition that appears zoomed or differently framed in the wallpaper preview is not automatically a damaged file. The available sources do not define a standard Vivid Friction canvas size, and Apple’s preview is the stage at which you decide whether the framing works. If the image itself is missing, use the troubleshooting steps below; if it is present but the composition is not suitable, return to Photos and try another of the four images.
Troubleshooting the setup
The Vivid Friction file does not appear in Photos
- Return to the place where you downloaded the image and save it to the iPhone’s Photos library rather than leaving it only in the browser or another app.
- Open Photos and verify that the picture can be viewed there.
- Reopen Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos and look again.
The wallpaper picker can select a custom photo only after the file is available to Photos. If the article shows several download choices, confirm that you saved the actual image rather than a page preview.

You cannot find Add New Wallpaper
Start from the top level of the Settings app and tap Wallpaper; the control is inside that page. You can also touch and hold the Lock Screen and tap the Add button to open the gallery. Apple’s current documentation uses the label Add New Wallpaper; an older iOS version may use slightly different wording.
The touch-and-hold gesture does nothing
Use the Settings route instead. Open Settings > Wallpaper, then add a new wallpaper from Photos. The Lock Screen gesture is an alternate entry point, not a requirement for using a downloaded image.
The image looks wrong after selection
Return to the preview and inspect the framing before tapping Add. Try another Vivid Friction slice if the visible color balance or brush pattern is not what you want. Since no authoritative dimensions are supplied for the series, avoid downloading an unverified “resized” version solely to match a number posted elsewhere.
The Lock Screen is correct but the Home Screen is not
This usually reflects the choice made after tapping Add. Set as Wallpaper Pair applies one image to both screens, while Customize Home Screen is the route for a different Home Screen setup. Open the wallpaper controls again through Settings and create or edit the configuration with the option that matches your intended arrangement.

Apple’s guide supports managing wallpaper through Settings > Wallpaper. Open that page to review the current configuration and add a new one, then select the Vivid Friction photo from Photos. The exact controls shown for an existing setup can depend on the iOS version, so follow the labels displayed on your phone.

Questions about the files and reuse
Are there four separate wallpapers?
iDownloadBlog reports four mobile images in the Vivid Friction collection. They are described as slices from a larger landscape composition, which explains why related brush strokes can continue when the images are seen together. The four-image count is a description of that reported collection, not a requirement to install all four.
What file type or resolution should I download?
No authoritative specification in the available sources states an exact file format, pixel size, or device-by-device resolution for Vivid Friction. Use the image offered by the source article, save it to Photos, and rely on the iPhone preview to determine whether the framing is acceptable.
