On a systemd-based CentOS or Linux server, check the current setting with timedatectl, choose a valid IANA time zone name such as America/Chicago, and apply it with sudo timedatectl set-timezone America/Chicago. Run timedatectl again to verify the change. Setting a time zone changes how the system represents local time; it does not set the clock or configure network time synchronization.
Check which time zone the server is using
Start by inspecting the server rather than changing its clock. Run:

timedatectlThe output includes the local time, a Time zone line, and information about clock synchronization. The time-zone value uses a Region/City name, for example America/Chicago. Note the current zone before making a change, especially on a production server whose logs, scheduled jobs, or applications may rely on local-time display.
timedatectl is the standard approach described for CentOS 8 and RHEL 9. It applies to Linux installations that use systemd and provide this command; the name “Linux server” alone does not guarantee that every distribution or older release has the same tool. If the command is unavailable, identify the distribution and release before using a different method.

Find the correct Region/City name
Time-zone identifiers come from the IANA time-zone database and follow a Region/City pattern. Use an identifier from the system’s list rather than a short label such as CST, which can be ambiguous.
To search the available names, pipe the list through grep:

The search is case-sensitive by default, so use capitalization that matches the listed identifiers. To see the complete list instead, run:
timedatectl list-timezonesChoose the location whose civil-time rules should apply to the server, not necessarily the location of the data center. A named location carries the rules associated with that zone, including applicable daylight-saving changes; a fixed abbreviation or manually chosen offset does not express the same location-based rule set.

Set the time zone with timedatectl
-
Choose the exact identifier from
timedatectl list-timezones. -
Apply it with elevated privileges. For example:
sudo timedatectl set-timezone America/Chicago -
Verify the setting:
timedatectl
Check that the Time zone line now shows the selected identifier. This is a persistent system time-zone setting; it is not merely a change to the current shell session. If the server is managed by configuration-management software or a provisioning system, check that system too, or it may later restore its own configured value.

Understand what changes—and what does not
Changing the zone changes local-time representation
A server’s time zone determines how system time is presented as local time and which regional civil-time rules apply. Changing the zone is useful when logs, reports, or software are expected to display a particular locality’s time. It does not mean that the underlying clock has been manually moved to a different instant.
Clock synchronization is a separate setting
The time-zone setting and synchronization status are separate. timedatectl shows synchronization information alongside the zone, but set-timezone does not configure a time source. On RHEL 9 and later, Red Hat documents time synchronization through chronyd, provided by the chrony package. If the displayed clock is wrong, diagnose synchronization separately rather than repeatedly changing the zone.

Manual clock changes are a different operation
timedatectl set-time is a way to set the clock manually, not a way to select a time zone. Red Hat’s guidance favors synchronization through chrony over manually maintaining the clock. Use manual time-setting only when appropriate for the system and its time service; a manually entered time can drift if no synchronization service corrects it.
Set the time zone on different CentOS and Linux releases
CentOS 8 and RHEL 9
For CentOS 8 and RHEL 9, the standard command is timedatectl set-timezone <Region/City>. Replace the example identifier with the exact entry from the local time-zone list. The command changes the zone; it should not be treated as a substitute for configuring or checking the clock synchronization service.

Do not assume every command or behavior is identical across releases. The available material identifies timedatectl as the recommended approach in a CentOS 7-specific vendor guide, while a separate RHEL 7 reference exists; verify the command against the documentation for the exact release and installed system. In particular, a warning about editing /etc/localtime in that vendor guide concerns compatibility with that vendor’s replication products. It is not evidence that all CentOS 7 systems will fail if that file is changed.
CentOS 6 and legacy systems
Older CentOS 6 instructions commonly changed /etc/localtime directly, by replacing it or making it a link. That is a legacy method, not the preferred procedure for the systemd-based CentOS 8 and RHEL 9 systems covered by timedatectl. Before applying an older recipe, confirm the operating-system release and whether it uses systemd. Avoid mixing legacy file edits with the system’s supported time-zone management method.

Other Linux distributions
On another Linux distribution, first check whether timedatectl is installed and whether the system uses systemd. If so, the same list, set, and verify sequence may be available, but distribution-specific documentation should determine the supported approach. If not, do not assume an /etc/localtime recipe is universally safe; consult the documentation for that operating system and release.
When the server still shows the wrong time
The zone name is not accepted
List valid identifiers and copy the full spelling, including capitalization and the slash:
timedatectl list-timezones | grep ChicagoThen rerun set-timezone with the exact listed value. Do not substitute a city abbreviation or a guessed path.
The time is wrong even though the zone is correct
Inspect the full timedatectl output and look at the synchronization status as well as the zone. If the identifier is correct but the clock itself is inaccurate, investigate the system’s time service and its configuration. On RHEL 9 and later, that service is generally chronyd from the chrony package. Changing the time zone will not repair a clock that is not synchronizing.

A runtime chrony change does not survive a restart
Red Hat’s RHEL 9 guidance distinguishes temporary changes made with chronyc from persistent configuration: runtime changes made through chronyc are lost when chronyd restarts. Persistent chrony configuration belongs in /etc/chrony.conf. This concerns time synchronization, not the time-zone selection made with timedatectl set-timezone.
An older file-editing recipe causes unexpected behavior
Do not replace or relink /etc/localtime simply because an old tutorial recommends it. First establish which release and time-management tools are in use, and whether an application or vendor product has a documented constraint. A Cirata guide reports a problem with direct /etc/localtime changes on CentOS 7 for its own replication products and recommends timedatectl for that use case; treat that warning as product-specific, not as a universal CentOS rule.

Operational checks before and after the change

Confirm the operating-system release and whether it provides systemd and
timedatectl. -
Choose a Region/City identifier that reflects the time rules your applications and operators need.

Record the existing zone if you may need to restore it.

After applying the change, verify the zone with

Consider downstream effects: a different local-time display may affect how people interpret timestamps in logs, reports, and scheduled tasks, even though the zone-setting command does not itself set the clock.
