To force new players to appear at one location on a dedicated Project Zomboid server, stop the server, open the .ini profile it actually loads from Zomboid/Server/, set SpawnPoint=x,y,z, save the file, and restart. For example: SpawnPoint=10600,9500,0. The documented 0,0,0 value is a sentinel that is ignored, so it does not force a location.
What the SpawnPoint setting does
SpawnPoint is the dedicated-server setting for a fixed starting coordinate. Its value is a comma-separated triplet containing the world’s x, y and z coordinates. When the server loads a valid non-zero triplet, a player entering the world through a new-character or other new-spawn flow is directed to that coordinate instead of receiving the normal choice of starting areas.

Changing the value does not normally move an existing survivor. A player who is already in the world must use the game’s normal character-management options or another separately documented administrative method; the server-setting material does not establish a teleport command for active characters.
A fixed point is different from a list of towns or regions. If your goal is to let players choose among several starting areas, use the server’s spawn-point and spawn-region files rather than forcing one coordinate.

Before editing: identify the server profile
Dedicated-server settings are generated under the host’s Zomboid/Server/ directory. The file is commonly named servertest.ini when the default profile is used, but the name depends on the profile supplied to the server at startup. The important detail is not the example filename; it is that you edit the profile the running process actually loads.
A server can have several .ini files in the same directory. Editing an unused file produces no visible change because the running instance never reads it. If you administer more than one world, confirm which startup profile belongs to the world whose spawn behavior you want to change.

Zomboid/Server/directory. - Find the profile named by the server’s startup configuration, such as
servertest.ini. - Do not assume that a file with a familiar name is active when several profiles exist.
- Make the change while the server is stopped so the process cannot overwrite the file as it shuts down or starts.
Back up the live configuration first
Copy the active .ini file before changing it. Keep the backup outside the file you are editing and give it a recognizable name, such as a dated copy, so you can restore the previous configuration if the server will not start or the setting has an unintended result.
The same precaution is useful for related spawn files when you are working with custom regions or modded maps. A backup gives you a reversible change: restore the original profile, start the server, and then investigate the edited value without risking additional changes to the world.
Choose a coordinate from the Project Zomboid map
Use the Project Zomboid online map to locate the place where new characters should appear. Record all three values shown for the desired square: x, y and z. A coordinate is not a town name or a map label; it is a world position, so copy the numeric triplet exactly.

When selecting a point, consider where a newly created survivor will stand relative to buildings, roads and the rest of the group. A coordinate inside an inaccessible structure, outside the loaded map, or in a location supplied by a map mod that is not installed on the server can make the spawn unusable. The setting itself only stores the numbers; it does not validate that the location is suitable for your particular map and mod set.

Keep the order unchanged. The first number is x, the second is y, and the third is z. Do not replace the commas with spaces, semicolons or a town name. If the map gives a negative value or a non-zero vertical level, retain that value exactly.
Edit SpawnPoint in the INI file
Open the active profile in a plain-text editor and search for SpawnPoint. Replace its current value with your coordinate triplet. A finished entry looks like this:
SpawnPoint=10600,9500,0Use one line, keep the setting name and equals sign intact, and separate the three numbers with commas. Avoid adding explanatory text on the same line. Preserve the surrounding formatting used by the profile instead of converting the file to a different format.
If the entry currently reads:
SpawnPoint=0,0,0the server treats it as the documented default or sentinel and ignores it. Leaving that value in place therefore allows the normal spawn behavior; it does not send every player to the origin. To force a location, replace all three zeroes with the coordinates you selected.

Save the file in place after checking the spelling and punctuation. A typo in the setting name, a missing comma, or non-numeric text can prevent the server from recognizing the value. Do not create a second SpawnPoint line elsewhere in the profile and expect it to override the first; edit the existing entry so there is one unambiguous value.
Restart and verify with a new spawn
Stop the server cleanly before saving or while it is stopped, then start it again after the file has been saved. Dedicated-server configuration changes are read on startup, so a running process will continue using the old value until the next restart.
- Shut down the dedicated server normally.
- Confirm that the active profile contains the intended
SpawnPoint=x,y,zline. - Save the profile and close the editor.
- Start the server with the same profile and map or mod set it used previously.
- Test by creating a new character or using a flow that creates a new spawn.
- Compare the character’s starting position with the coordinate you selected on the map.
Testing with an existing character is not a valid check of this setting because that character normally retains its saved position. If you are testing on a live world, coordinate the test so you do not mistake an old character’s location for a failed configuration change.
Fixed coordinate or selectable spawn regions?
Choose the method that matches how you want players to enter the world. A fixed coordinate is simplest when everyone should begin together. Spawn regions are better when players should choose a town or when the world has several intentional starting areas.

The server-management documentation exposes pzserver spawnpoints for changing spawn points and pzserver spawnregions for changing regions. Use those documented operations when one coordinate is too restrictive or when a modded map supplies its own starting areas. A fixed value and region definitions are alternative approaches; do not expect a region list to be selected by editing SpawnPoint alone.

Making everyone spawn together
To make a group begin in one place, set one valid coordinate in the active profile and restart the server. Every player who creates a new character after that restart will use the fixed point, subject to the coordinate being valid for the loaded world. Players who already have characters in the world will not be relocated merely because the value changed.
For a coordinated test, have everyone create new characters after the restart rather than asking players with existing survivors to log in and compare positions. If one person still receives the ordinary town choices, treat that as evidence that the server is ignoring the fixed value and follow the troubleshooting checks below.

Troubleshooting a spawn point that is ignored
The edit had no effect
- Verify the directory is the server’s active
Zomboid/Server/directory. - Verify the filename is the profile named by the startup command. Editing a different profile, even one in the same folder, changes nothing.
- Stop and restart the server after saving. The setting is loaded at startup, not continuously while the process is running.
- Test with a new character or another new-spawn flow; an existing survivor normally keeps its saved position.
Players still receive normal town choices
Open the active profile and check the exact value. If it remains 0,0,0, the server is expected to ignore it and provide normal spawn behavior. Also check that the line is spelled SpawnPoint, contains three comma-separated numeric values, and has not been commented out or duplicated in a way that leaves the active entry unchanged.
The server fails after the change
Restore the backup profile and start the server again. Once the world is running, compare the intended line with the backup and re-enter the coordinate as plain numbers separated by commas. A malformed value, accidental extra characters, or an edit to the wrong profile can all be eliminated by returning to the known-good copy before trying again.
Also compare the server and client build versions. Dedicated-server setup guidance stresses using the exact matching build; a configuration problem investigated on mismatched builds can look like a spawn-setting failure when the underlying issue is version incompatibility.

A custom-map or mod location is missing
Check that the map or mod providing the location is installed and enabled for the same server profile used at startup. Confirm that its spawn files and regions are present in that profile as well. A coordinate copied from a map that the server did not load cannot produce the intended result, even when the INI syntax is correct.

First determine whether those players are using existing characters. The fixed setting governs new-spawn flows; saved characters normally keep their previous positions. If the affected players are definitely creating new characters, recheck that all of them joined the same server instance and that the instance was restarted after the edit.
Build 41 and Build 42 considerations
Dedicated-server instructions currently cover Build 42-era setups, while one settings reference is explicitly labeled Build 41. The file location and SpawnPoint=x,y,z syntax are the stable parts of the procedure, but profile names, generated files and startup details can vary by branch.
Use the profile generated by the exact Project Zomboid branch you run rather than copying a filename from another installation. If a Build 42 server creates a different profile name or supporting spawn files, follow that generated structure and apply the same check: edit the loaded profile, use a valid coordinate triplet, and restart before testing.
When troubleshooting, record the server build and the client build together. Matching versions reduce the chance that a connection or world-loading issue is mistaken for an INI problem.

Use this sequence whenever you change the starting location:
- Identify the profile loaded by the dedicated server.
- Back up that profile and any related spawn files you plan to edit.
- Locate the desired square on map.projectzomboid.com and copy its x, y and z values.
- Set one line in the active profile:
SpawnPoint=x,y,z. - Confirm the value is not
0,0,0and contains no spaces or extra text that would alter the profile format. - Save the file while the server is stopped.
- Restart the server using the same profile and map or mod configuration.
- Verify the result with a newly created character.
If the requirement changes from “everyone starts together” to “players choose among several areas,” undo the fixed-coordinate approach and configure the appropriate spawn-point or spawn-region files instead.
What to remember
The setting belongs to the loaded server profile under Zomboid/Server/, not to a random template file. Its value is a world-coordinate triplet, and 0,0,0 is intentionally ignored. A clean restart is required before the server reads a new value, and only new-spawn flows are expected to use the changed location. Those four checks explain most apparent failures: wrong profile, invalid or zero coordinates, no restart, or testing with an existing character.
