Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Use /setworldspawn to change the server’s world spawn—the location used when a player has no separate respawn point. Java Edition requires the command sender to be an operator (OP). Bedrock Edition requires cheats, including allow-cheats=true in a dedicated server’s server.properties. If you need to change one player’s respawn location instead, use /spawnpoint; it does not move the world spawn.
What “spawn point” means on a server
Minecraft has two related but different spawn settings:

/spawnpoint. A command such as/spawnpoint @a ~ ~ ~applies that personal setting to every currently targeted player.
These settings can coexist. Setting the world spawn does not overwrite each player’s separate respawn point, and setting a player’s respawn point does not move the world spawn. Decide which scope you need before running a command.
Requirements before changing the world spawn
Confirm the edition
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition accept different argument formats and use different permission controls. Check the edition running on the server before copying a command. A command copied from the other edition may be rejected or interpreted differently.

Get the required permission
In Java Edition, the command must be run by an operator. If you control the server console, grant the account operator status with /op <username>, then run the spawn command from in-game chat. A server console can also issue the command directly, subject to the console and host panel’s command conventions.
In Bedrock Edition, cheats must be enabled for the world. For a dedicated Bedrock server, set allow-cheats=true in server.properties, restart or reload the server as required by the host, and then run the command. A player without the necessary permission will generally see a failure message rather than changing the spawn.
Choose a safe destination
Stand on the block you want to use, or record its exact X, Y and Z coordinates. Check that the area is accessible and not inside a wall, over a drop, or in a place where players will immediately take damage. If the destination is in a protected region, test it with the server’s protection settings in mind; a plugin can alter the final location after vanilla Minecraft accepts the command.
Set the world spawn in Java Edition
Set it where you are standing
- Travel to the block that should become the world spawn.
- Face the direction in which newly spawning players should face.
- Open in-game chat and run
/setworldspawn. You can also issue the command from the server console. - If the command was run by a player, make sure that player has OP status. If Minecraft reports an unknown command or insufficient permission, verify that you are on Java Edition and that the operator assignment applied to the correct account.
With no arguments, Java uses the command sender’s current position. The facing angle defaults to 0.0, which is due south, so simply facing a direction does not by itself change the default angle unless the angle is supplied explicitly.

Set exact coordinates and a facing angle
Java’s full form is /setworldspawn <pos> <angle>, with the position optional and the angle optional. For example, /setworldspawn 100 70 100 -180 places the world spawn at X 100, Y 70, Z 100 and makes players face north. Use this form when the command is being issued from a remote console, command block, or a location different from the intended spawn.
Enter whole-number coordinates when you want a specific block. The Y coordinate controls the vertical level, so choose a solid, reachable surface rather than the interior of terrain. If you omit the position, the command uses the location from which it is executed; if you omit the angle, Minecraft uses its 0.0 default.
Run the command from a console
A console is useful when nobody should be teleported to the destination just to execute the command. Supply explicit coordinates and an angle so the result does not depend on the console’s location. The exact way to enter a leading slash varies by hosting panel; use the panel’s normal command format and check its response for a success message.
Set the world spawn in Bedrock Edition
Enable cheats first
- For a local Bedrock world, open the world settings and enable cheats before entering the command.
- For a dedicated server, open
server.properties, setallow-cheats=true, and restart or reload according to the server software’s instructions. - Join the world with the required permission and verify that commands are available.
Enter the Bedrock command
Bedrock uses /setworldspawn [spawnPoint: x y z]. Supply the desired X, Y and Z values, for example /setworldspawn 100 70 100. Bedrock accepts floating-point coordinates, so decimal values can be used where the server and command parser permit them. Unlike the Java form described above, this syntax does not include a separate angle argument in the documented command form.

After running the command, disconnect and reconnect with a test account that has no personal respawn point, or otherwise test the fallback spawn safely. Existing beds or other individual respawn settings can make a player appear somewhere else even though the world spawn changed successfully.
World spawn versus a player’s respawn point

Use /spawnpoint when the requirement is “make this player respawn here.” Use /setworldspawn when the requirement is “change the world’s default spawn.” Applying the all-player form of /spawnpoint is not a substitute for changing the world spawn, because it creates or updates individual settings rather than the world fallback.

Why players may not appear on the exact block
Vanilla Minecraft can place a player near the stored world-spawn coordinates rather than directly inside an unsafe block. Servers also commonly use a spawn-radius setting that allows a safe position within an area around the configured point. Consequently, “the command succeeded” and “every player stands on this exact block” are different expectations.
Protection plugins and spawn-radius behavior
Plugins can intervene after the vanilla command runs. A Minecraft Forum report described players appearing about 15 blocks from the configured point when WorldGuard was installed. In that report, changing the spawn-radius value to zero did not correct the offset. This is a community troubleshooting report, not a guarantee that every WorldGuard installation behaves the same way, but it illustrates why plugin configuration must be checked when the observed location differs from the command’s coordinates.

Review the server’s protection, lobby, teleport, and spawn-management plugins for rules that redirect new arrivals. Temporarily testing in an unprotected area can help separate vanilla placement from plugin behavior. Do not remove a protection plugin on a live world without a backup and a clear rollback plan.
Check the destination itself
- Confirm that X, Y and Z are the intended dimension and coordinates; a command entered from a different dimension or copied with a typo will not produce the intended result.
- Inspect the surrounding blocks for hazards, enclosed spaces, or terrain that forces the game to choose a nearby safe location.
- Test with a player who has no individual respawn point. A bed or another personal setting can make a successful world-spawn change appear ineffective.
A reliable verification checklist
- Record the coordinates and edition before changing anything.
- Run the edition-appropriate
/setworldspawncommand with the needed permission. - Read the command feedback in chat or the console. An error indicates that the command was not accepted; a success response confirms that Minecraft stored a new world spawn.
- Test with a new or controlled player state that does not have a separate respawn point.
- Move the test player away from the area, then use a safe death-and-respawn test only on a backup or test server. Avoid testing by destroying valuable builds or by placing a player in danger.
- If the player arrives nearby rather than at the exact block, compare the offset with the server’s spawn-radius setting and inspect plugins before changing additional commands.
- Document the final coordinates, angle (for Java), permission change, and any plugin settings so another administrator can reproduce or undo the configuration.
Common errors and fixes
“You do not have permission”
On Java, grant the intended account OP status with /op <username> or run the command from an authorized console. On Bedrock, verify that cheats are enabled and that the account is allowed to execute commands. Do not grant broad administrative access to an account that only needs a one-time spawn change; remove elevated access afterward if your server’s policy requires it.
“Unknown or incomplete command”
Check the edition and use its syntax. Java supports an optional position and angle; Bedrock uses the spawn-point coordinates form and accepts floating-point coordinates. Also check for copied smart punctuation, missing spaces, or angle brackets that were entered literally instead of being replaced by values.
The command works, but players still use an old location
First determine whether those players have individual respawn points. Then check whether a plugin, lobby teleport, or spawn-radius rule is redirecting them. A world-spawn change does not erase personal settings, and a plugin can apply its own placement logic after vanilla Minecraft processes the command.

Players face the wrong direction on Java
Supply the angle explicitly rather than relying on the default. The documented default is 0.0 (south); the example angle -180 faces north. Re-run the Java command with the desired coordinates and angle, then test with a player who is actually using the world spawn rather than a personal respawn point.
A setting change did not remove an offset
If setting the spawn radius to zero has no effect, treat that as evidence that another component may be responsible. The reported WorldGuard case continued to place players roughly 15 blocks away after that change. Inspect plugin configuration and event handlers, and test on a copy of the world before making invasive changes.

Command reference and version caution
The essential Java form is /setworldspawn [position] [angle]; the position defaults to where the command is run and the angle defaults to 0.0. The essential Bedrock form is /setworldspawn [spawnPoint: x y z]. The per-player alternative is /spawnpoint, including the all-player example /spawnpoint @a ~ ~ ~.
Command details can change between Minecraft releases, server software, and editions. The behavior summarized here comes from community guides and wiki material reviewed on October 14, 2026; the reviewed pages did not confirm whether a 2026 release changed this command.
