How to Set the Name of Your Soulmask Server

Set your Soulmask dedicated-server name with -SteamServerName="Your Name" in the launch command, or set SteamServerName=Your Name under [Dedicated.Settings] in Engine.ini. Restart the server and confirm the new name in the Soulmask server browser. If both locations contain a name, the startup argument takes priority.

The setting that controls your Soulmask server name

Soulmask reads the displayed dedicated-server name from SteamServerName. You can provide that value in the command that starts the server or in the persistent Engine.ini configuration file. The command-line form is:

-SteamServerName="My Soulmask Server"

The configuration-file form is placed in the [Dedicated.Settings] section:

After changing either form, fully stop and restart the server. The new text should then appear in the in-game or Steam server browser. Editing a file while the process is running does not change the name already registered by that process.

Choose the method that matches your deployment

Before you edit anything

• Stop the Soulmask server cleanly. Do not edit a file while the server is writing configuration changes.
• Identify which process actually launches the server. A batch file, shell script, control panel, or container entrypoint may add arguments after reading your file.
• Keep the exact spelling and capitalization of SteamServerName. In an INI file, place it below [Dedicated.Settings].
• Make a backup copy of the current batch file or Engine.ini before changing it. This gives you a quick rollback if another startup setting is lost.

Set the name on a self-hosted Windows server

Edit StartServer.bat

1. Open the Soulmask Dedicated Server folder.
2. Right-click StartServer.bat and select Edit. Use a text editor rather than double-clicking the file, which would start the server.
3. Find the existing line that launches the dedicated server. Add -SteamServerName="Your Name" to that same launch line. If the line already contains a -SteamServerName option, replace its value instead of creating a second copy.
4. Save the batch file and close the editor.
5. Start the server with the edited batch file and wait for it to finish registering.
6. Open the Soulmask server browser and search for the exact name, including spaces and punctuation.

A launch line can contain the name alongside other server options. For example:

StartServer.bat -SteamServerName="My Soulmask Server" -MaxPlayers=20 -pve -Port=8777 -QueryPort=27015

Use the options already required by your installation; the relevant part for naming is only -SteamServerName="My Soulmask Server". Quotation marks are important when the name contains spaces.

When the batch file calls another script

Some installations use StartServer.bat as a wrapper that calls another batch or executable. In that case, put the argument on the command that ultimately launches Soulmask, or pass it through exactly as the wrapper expects. After saving, reopen the file and search for SteamServerName to make sure there is not a second value later in the startup chain.

Set the name in Windows Engine.ini

The Windows configuration-file location is:

WSSavedConfigWindowsServerEngine.ini

1. Stop the server.
2. Open that Engine.ini file in a text editor.
3. Find [Dedicated.Settings]. If the section exists, add or edit the setting beneath it. If it does not exist, add the section and setting exactly as shown.
4. Save the file without changing its .ini extension.
5. Restart the server and check the browser listing.

[Dedicated.Settings]
SteamServerName=My Soulmask Server

Do not put the setting under an unrelated section. The name belongs to [Dedicated.Settings]. In this file format, the value does not need quotation marks, even when it contains spaces.

Set the name on a Linux server

Linux installations use the corresponding path:

WS/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Engine.ini

1. Stop the dedicated-server process or use the host’s stop control.
2. Open WS/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Engine.ini with your preferred editor.
3. Add or update the entry under [Dedicated.Settings]:

[Dedicated.Settings]
SteamServerName=My Soulmask Server

4. Save the file and exit the editor.
5. Start the server again.
6. Verify the listing in the Soulmask server browser.

If a Linux startup script also includes -SteamServerName, that argument is authoritative for that launch. Change or remove the script value if you want the Engine.ini value to control the name.

Change the name through a hosting panel

Managed hosts generally expose the same setting without requiring direct file access.

1. Open the server’s control panel.
2. Go to Startup (the label may be shown as startup parameters or configuration).
3. Locate the variable named Server Name.
4. Enter the desired name and save the configuration.
5. Restart the server from the panel.
6. Confirm the result in the Soulmask server browser.

The panel’s Server Name field normally maps to -SteamServerName. Because the panel can generate that argument on every boot, it can override an Engine.ini value. If a file edit appears to have no effect, inspect the Startup page for an old name and change it there.

Change the name in Docker or another container

Container images commonly expose the setting as an environment variable named SERVER_NAME. A Docker invocation may look like this:

docker run --env=SERVER_NAME='My Soulmask Server' ...

The exact variable is an implementation detail of the image. Check the image’s documentation or compose file rather than assuming every Soulmask container uses SERVER_NAME. Set the value where the container is defined, recreate or restart the container, and then check the server browser.

If the image also accepts command-line arguments, inspect its startup configuration for -SteamServerName. A generated command-line value can take precedence over an INI file mounted into the container.

Understand which value wins

When more than one place defines a name, the startup command takes priority over Engine.ini. This explains a common pattern: you edit the file, restart, and still see the previous name because a batch file, panel, shell script, or container entrypoint is passing another value.

Use this order to resolve conflicts:

1. Inspect the final command that launches the server and search for every occurrence of -SteamServerName.
2. Check whether a later occurrence supplies a different value. Treat the value closest to the actual server executable as the effective one.
3. For a managed host, inspect Startup settings because the provider may inject an argument that is not visible in your server files.
4. For a container, inspect its environment variables, compose definition, and entrypoint configuration.
5. Remove or update the conflicting value, restart, and verify again.

Verify the new name correctly

The practical verification point is the Soulmask server browser. After a complete restart:

• Search for the exact text you entered.
• Check spaces, capitalization, punctuation, and any prefix or suffix added by a host.
• If the browser shows both an old and a new listing, wait for the old process to shut down completely and confirm that only one server instance is running.
• If the old text remains, repeat the precedence check rather than repeatedly editing Engine.ini.

A browser listing is more useful than relying on the file contents alone: it confirms the running process registered the value you intended.

Troubleshoot an old or missing server name

The old name is still displayed

• Confirm that you stopped and restarted the server after saving the change.
• Search the startup script for a second -SteamServerName value.
• Check the hosting panel’s Startup page for a Server Name variable that still contains the old text.
• Verify that you edited the active path: WindowsServer/Engine.ini on Windows or LinuxServer/Engine.ini on Linux.
• For Docker, confirm that you changed the environment value used to create the running container, not only a temporary shell variable.

The server does not appear after editing

• Restore the previous launch line or configuration backup and start the server to confirm that the naming edit did not remove another required argument.
• On Windows, check that the batch file still has its original command structure and that the name argument is attached to the launch command.
• Use quotation marks around a command-line name containing spaces.
• In Engine.ini, check that SteamServerName is under the exact [Dedicated.Settings] header and that the file is saved in the server’s active WS/Saved/Config directory.

The name is cut off or displayed differently

First compare the browser text with the exact value you entered. A host or container wrapper may add its own prefix, and a command-line value may differ from the INI value. Remove duplicate definitions so there is one intentional source of truth, then restart and check the listing again.

Practical naming checklist

• Choose a recognizable name that distinguishes the server from other entries.
• Use a quoted command-line value when the name contains spaces.
• Use an unquoted INI value beneath [Dedicated.Settings].
• Change the panel variable instead of only editing files when a provider controls startup arguments.
• For containers, use the environment variable documented by the specific image.
• Restart before judging the result, and verify in the server browser.
