Set a Terraria dedicated server’s language in the configuration file, not in the world or player settings. Add language=<code> to the file used at startup, save it as plain text, stop the server, and launch it again with that same configuration file. For example, language=fr-FR starts the server in French.
On Windows, launch the file with TerrariaServer.exe -config serverconfig.txt. On Linux or macOS, use TerrariaServer -config serverconfig.txt. The setting changes the dedicated server process’s language-dependent interface and messages; it does not force every connected player’s Terraria client interface to change.
The setting you need
Terraria dedicated servers read their language at startup from a key named language. The value is a locale code, including its capitalization and hyphen. Put the key on its own line in serverconfig.txt, or in whatever configuration file your startup command passes to -config.
language=fr-FRA configuration file can have any filename. The important detail is that the launch command must point to the file you edited. If a shortcut, batch file, shell script, control panel, or service starts the server with a different file, changes to an unused copy have no effect.

Supported Terraria server language codes
Use one of the locale codes documented for the dedicated server. Do not replace them with informal names such as French or Spanish; the server expects the code format shown here.

Capitalization matters in values such as zh-Hans and pt-BR. If a language is not represented in this list, the dedicated-server documentation does not establish a supported code for it.

Prepare before changing the file
- Identify the directory containing the dedicated-server executable.
- Find the configuration file actually used by the server’s shortcut, script, service, or hosting panel.
- Stop the running server cleanly before editing or restarting it. This prevents the old process from continuing to serve clients while you test the new setting.
- Use a plain-text editor. Rich-text applications can add formatting characters that make a configuration line unreadable to the server.
- Keep a backup of the current configuration if it contains world, port, password, or other working settings.
Set the language on Windows
1. Find the active configuration file
Open the folder that contains TerrariaServer.exe, then inspect the shortcut or batch file used to start it. Look for a command containing -config. The filename immediately following that option is the file you must edit. It may be serverconfig.txt or another name.
2. Add or replace the language line
Open the active file in Notepad or another plain-text editor. Add a separate line such as:
language=es-ESIf a line beginning with language= already exists, replace only its value. Keep the key spelling exactly as language, with no spaces around the equals sign. Leave the other server settings unchanged.
3. Save as plain text
Save the file without changing its extension or encoding unnecessarily. If you use Save As in Notepad, ensure the file remains a text file rather than becoming serverconfig.txt.txt. Check the filename in File Explorer if the server later reports that it cannot find the configuration.

4. Relaunch with the same command
After the server has stopped, run:
TerrariaServer.exe -config serverconfig.txtSubstitute the actual filename if your setup uses a different one. A shortcut or batch file is fine as long as its -config argument points to the edited file. The language is read when the process starts; merely saving the file while the server is running does not reload it.

Set the language on Linux or macOS
1. Locate the file used by the service or shell command
Check the command or service definition that starts the dedicated server. The active file is the one supplied after -config, not necessarily the file in the executable’s directory. When several instances run on one machine, identify the file belonging to the instance you intend to change.
2. Edit the locale value
Open the file with a plain-text editor and add, for example:
language=de-DEUse Unix line endings if your editor offers that choice, preserve the exact locale capitalization, and avoid tabs or quotation marks around the value.

Stop the server cleanly and launch it again with:
TerrariaServer -config serverconfig.txtIf a shell script or system service starts the process, restart that same unit rather than launching a second copy manually. This keeps the edited file, world, port, and process under the same startup definition.
Using a shortcut, script, or service
There are two equivalent parts to this configuration: the language= line in the file and the -config argument in the launch command. Editing one without checking the other is the most common reason for an apparently ignored language change.
- Windows shortcut or batch file: inspect the target or command text and confirm it includes
TerrariaServer.exe -config serverconfig.txt(or your chosen filename). - Linux or macOS shell script: confirm the script invokes
TerrariaServer -config serverconfig.txtand does not copy another file over the one you edited. - Service manager: edit the configuration file referenced by the service’s start command, then restart the service through its normal administrative procedure.
- Managed host panel: find the server’s startup parameters or configuration-file editor. If the panel regenerates files, make the change in the panel’s persistent configuration rather than only in a temporary file.
The official setup syntax is the same in concept on each operating system: start the dedicated-server executable with -config followed by the configuration filename.
Confirm that the change worked
Watch the server console during startup for language-dependent headings, prompts, or status messages. The exact wording varies by version and by which messages the server emits, so use the locale you selected as the comparison rather than expecting every console line to be translated.

If the console still appears in the previous language, do not immediately change the code again. First verify that the process was stopped, that the edited file is the one named after -config, and that the line is not commented out or misspelled. A clean restart with the same command is required for the new value to be read.
What the server language does—and does not do
Server-side effect
The documented option belongs to the dedicated-server configuration. It controls the server process’s language-dependent interface and messages, which is useful for administrators who operate the console in a preferred language.
Player client effect
It does not automatically switch the Terraria game interface for everyone who connects. Each player must select the language for their own Terraria client in the game’s settings. A French server can therefore have players using English, German, or another client language at the same time.
World and gameplay effect
The locale setting is not a world-generation, item, map, or rules option. Changing it does not translate saved world content or alter gameplay mechanics; it changes the language used by the server process where localized text is available.

Running more than one server
Give each server instance its own configuration file and launch command. For example, one instance can use serverconfig.txt while another uses serverconfig-event.txt. Set a different language= value in each file, and ensure each command points to the intended file.
TerrariaServer.exe -config serverconfig.txt
TerrariaServer.exe -config serverconfig-event.txtSeparate files prevent one instance’s edits from changing another instance’s language, world, port, password, or other settings. They also make it easier to identify which configuration a scheduled task or service is using.
Examples for common language changes
French

Spanish
language=es-ESUse the exact es-ES spelling; es-es is not the documented form.
German
language=de-DEThe setting affects the server process, while players choose their own client language independently.
Chinese
language=zh-HansPreserve the uppercase H in Hans. Locale capitalization is part of the documented code.
Troubleshooting
The server language did not change
- Stop the dedicated server completely.
- Inspect the shortcut, script, or service and copy the exact filename after
-config. - Open that file and confirm it contains one active line beginning with
language=. - Check that the value exactly matches a supported code, including capitalization.
- Save the file as plain text, then start the server again with the same
-configargument.
If the process is launched by automation, make sure the automation is not restoring an older configuration during startup.
The server reports an invalid or ignored language
Compare the value character by character with the supported-code table. Common mistakes include using a language name instead of a locale, replacing the hyphen with an underscore, changing capitalization, or adding quotation marks. Remove duplicate language= lines so there is one unambiguous setting.
The file appears correct, but the console is unchanged
You may be editing a template or an inactive copy. Search the startup command for every -config argument and verify its working directory. On a machine with multiple instances, identify the process and configuration pair for the server you are observing. Then perform a full stop-and-start rather than relying on a reload command that does not reread startup options.
Players say their game is still in another language
This is expected when only the server configuration was changed. Ask each player to change the language in their own Terraria client settings. The server locale and client locale are separate.

Two servers keep inheriting the same language
Check whether both launch commands point to one shared configuration file. Create a separate file for each instance, copy only the settings that should be shared, assign the desired locale in each copy, and update each command’s -config argument.

Restore the backup and compare the edited file with the working version. Look for accidental rich-text formatting, a changed filename extension, malformed lines, or edits to unrelated settings. Reapply only the language line, save as plain text, and restart with the known-good command.
Self-hosted and managed deployments
On a self-hosted Windows, Linux, or macOS machine, you control both the text file and the launch command, so the procedure above applies directly. A cloud or managed game-server host may hide the executable and generate the configuration automatically. In that case, use the host’s persistent startup-parameter or configuration editor and set the same key-value pair, language=<code>, if custom server options are supported.
Some panels expose only a limited set of settings. If there is no language field and the panel does not allow a custom configuration file or startup argument, the host may not expose this option. Do not edit an ephemeral container file unless the provider documents that it survives a restart; otherwise the setting can disappear when the instance is recreated.
Minimal working configuration example
The language line can appear alongside the other settings in a normal configuration file. Its position is not important, but it must be a complete line and must be read by the command that starts the server.
# serverconfig.txt

TerrariaServer -config serverconfig.txtIf the file has another name, use that actual name consistently in the command and in your server-management tools.
