To save a new recipe on the JURA C9, press and hold the drink’s product button for about two seconds, open Product settings, select the setting you want to change, adjust it with the on-screen navigation buttons, choose Save, then press the back/stop control twice to return to the start screen. For a single drink, you can change strength while the grinder is running or quantity while the drink is being prepared; those temporary changes do not replace the saved recipe.
What the C9’s four controls actually change
The C9 separates a drink recipe into four related choices. Keeping them separate makes it easier to diagnose a cup that is too weak, too large, too cool or simply prepared in the wrong mode.

JURA lists 17 speciality coffees, 7 grinder-consistency levels and individually programmable coffee-water quantity for the C9. Grinder consistency is a separate adjustment from the strength, volume and temperature controls covered here, so changing the recipe does not mean changing the grinder setting.

Use the permanent workflow below when you want the C9 to remember a change for future preparations of that drink. The exact fields shown can vary because the available Product settings depend on the drink you selected.

- Start at the drink-selection screen. Find the product button for the coffee you want to edit. Select the actual drink whose recipe should change; settings are attached to that product rather than being one universal value for every beverage.
- Open the product menu. Press and hold that product button for approximately two seconds. The C9 then opens the menu for editing the selected product.
- Choose Product settings. This is the menu in which the C9 exposes the fields supported by that drink. If a field is not listed, it is not offered for that particular product in the current menu.
- Set coffee strength if required. Select Coffee strength, use the on-screen navigation buttons to move to the desired level, and press Save. The C9 provides ten programmable levels, so choose the level that matches the intensity you want rather than assuming that a temporary grinder adjustment has been stored.
- Set the water amount. Select the drink’s Amount or Quantity field (the wording shown by the machine identifies the field), use the navigation controls to select the desired water volume, and save it. The C9 allows coffee-water quantity to be programmed separately for each product.
- Set brewing temperature. Select Temperature, choose one of the three available levels with the navigation buttons, and press Save. Temperature is the brewing-heat choice; it is not the same as increasing coffee strength or dispensing a smaller cup.
- Exit to the start screen. Press the back/stop control twice. This returns you to the starting display after the saved recipe changes have been committed.
JURA’s C9 instructions describe the central action this way: “Press a product button for two seconds and enter the preferred settings.” Holding the product button is therefore important; simply tapping a drink starts preparation instead of opening its saved recipe.
How to make one C9 coffee stronger without changing the recipe
For a one-time adjustment, begin the drink normally and wait until the grinder is running. Use the on-screen strength control during grinding to select the intensity for that preparation. The temporary choice applies to the drink being made and does not overwrite the strength level stored in Product settings.
When a permanent strength change is better
If the same drink is consistently weaker or stronger than you prefer, stop relying on the temporary control and edit the recipe: hold the product button for about two seconds, open Product settings, select Coffee strength, choose a level, save, and leave the menu with the back/stop control. The saved value then becomes the starting recipe for later preparations of that product.

Do not confuse strength with volume
A larger cup can taste less intense simply because more water is dispensed; that is a quantity change, not necessarily a strength change. Conversely, reducing water does not select a higher coffee-dose level. Decide whether the problem is intensity or cup size before editing the recipe, and change only the corresponding field.

How to adjust the C9’s cup size or water volume
To store a different cup size, open the drink’s Product settings and edit its Amount or Quantity field. Navigate to the desired water volume and press Save before exiting. Because quantity is individually programmable, you can give different drinks different water amounts rather than applying one volume to the entire machine.
Make a larger or smaller cup once
If you only need a different amount today, start the drink and use the quantity control while preparation is in progress. That adjustment affects the current preparation only. The saved amount remains unchanged, so the next drink returns to its stored recipe.
Check the selected product
Volume settings belong to the drink whose product button you opened. If the cup size appears unchanged, verify that you edited the same product you actually selected for brewing. Also check that you pressed Save in the Amount/Quantity field and then exited normally.

Temperature is a saved Product settings field when the selected drink offers it. From the start screen, press and hold the relevant product button for about two seconds, select Product settings, open Temperature, choose one of the three levels, press Save, and press the back/stop control twice.

Why temperature may not appear
The C9 does not necessarily show every field for every product. JURA states that available fields depend on the selected drink. If Temperature is absent, you have not missed a hidden control in another screen; that product simply does not expose that field in its Product settings menu.
Temperature versus brewing world
Temperature selects among the available brewing-heat levels inside a recipe. Brewing world selects a broader preparation method. Changing one does not automatically change the other, so decide whether you want a different heat level or a different world before leaving the menu.
Classic Hot Brew and Light Brew
The C9 offers two preparation worlds:

The brewing-world choice is handled in Machine Settings. You can save one world as the machine’s choice, or configure the C9 to ask which world to use when it starts. This setting is separate from editing an individual drink’s strength, quantity or temperature.
A practical way to tune a drink
Change one variable at a time so you know which adjustment produced the result you wanted. The following sequence uses the C9’s controls without assuming a particular drink name or cup size.

- Choose the brewing world first. Decide between Classic Hot Brew and Light Brew in Machine Settings. Otherwise you may evaluate a cup prepared by a different method than the one you intended.
- Set quantity next. Pick the amount that fills your intended cup. A quantity that is too high or too low can make an otherwise suitable recipe seem wrong.
- Set strength. If the cup has the right volume but lacks intensity, raise the Coffee strength level. If it is too intense, select a lower level. Save the change in Product settings for a lasting result, or use the grinder-time control for a single drink.
- Set temperature last. Select one of the three temperature levels after the amount and strength are where you want them. This keeps brewing heat from masking a volume or intensity problem.
- Prepare another drink using the saved recipe. A temporary change is not evidence that the stored recipe changed. For a repeatable result, verify that each permanent field was saved and that you exited with the back/stop control.
Example: a smaller, more intense cup
Open the specific drink’s Product settings, select a lower Amount/Quantity, then choose a higher Coffee strength level and save both fields. Leave Temperature at its current level unless the heat itself is the issue. This example changes two recipe dimensions deliberately; it does not imply a particular numeric level because the machine’s ten strength choices and volume values are selected on screen.
Example: a drink you can consume immediately
Use Machine Settings to select Light Brew, or enable the startup question if you want to choose between worlds each time. Light Brew is defined by JURA as using less ground coffee and a reduced brewing temperature, so it is a preparation-world decision rather than a substitute for editing the saved strength or quantity field.

The change worked once but disappeared
You probably used a temporary control during grinding or preparation. Those controls are intentionally one-time adjustments. Open the product’s menu with a two-second press, edit the field in Product settings, press Save, and exit to the start screen.

The product menu does not open
Make sure you are pressing and holding the product button for approximately two seconds. A short press selects the drink for preparation; the longer press is the documented route to Product settings.

Temperature, strength or quantity is missing
Fields depend on the selected drink. Return to the start screen, choose the exact product you want to edit, hold its button, and inspect Product settings again. If the field is still absent, the C9 does not offer that adjustment for that product in that menu.
The value did not stick after leaving the menu
After changing a field, press Save before navigating away. Then press the back/stop control twice to return to the start screen. Reopening Product settings for the same product is a quick way to confirm that the intended value is still displayed.
The drink is prepared in an unexpected style
Check the brewing-world choice in Machine Settings. The C9 can either retain one selected world or ask which world to use at startup. A world selection affects the preparation method, while the individual recipe fields control strength, quantity and temperature within that setup.
The cup is the wrong size even though strength is correct
Edit Amount/Quantity rather than Coffee strength. Quantity controls coffee-water volume, and the C9 stores it independently for each product. If only the current cup needs correction, use the quantity control during preparation and leave the saved recipe alone.

The key distinction is persistence: settings entered through Product settings and saved there become the recipe for that product, while strength changes made during grinding and quantity changes made during preparation apply only to the drink currently being made.
