Set the exit logic before your Binance AI strategy opens a position: define the price that invalidates the trade, the price that realizes a gain, the quantity each order may close, and—on Futures—the price stream used for triggering. Then map that plan to the correct Spot OCO or conditional order, or to a Futures stop-market/stop-limit order. Finally, verify that the live orders, account mode, and AI permissions match the plan.

A stop price is only a trigger. A stop-market order submits a market order after the trigger and may fill at a different price; a stop-limit order submits a limit order and can remain unfilled if the market moves past that limit. Binance documents the mechanics, but it does not publish one universally suitable stop percentage, target, or risk/reward ratio.

What a stop-loss and take-profit rule actually does

A stop-loss is an exit instruction for a position that has moved against the setup. A take-profit is an exit instruction for a favorable move. In both cases, the configured price normally acts as a condition for submitting an order; it is not a promise that the order will execute at that exact price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Spot, a conditional market exit can submit a market order when its trigger is reached. A limit-based exit submits a limit order after triggering. On Futures, the same market-versus-limit distinction applies, but the order also interacts with position mode, position side, quantity, reduce-only behavior, and the trigger reference. Treat strategy decisions and exchange mechanics as two separate jobs: first decide why and where to exit, then select the order type that implements that decision.

Binance’s current Spot order documentation describes conditional orders and order lists in its Spot REST API documentation. Its general explanation of Spot order types is available in Different Order Types in Spot Trading.

Start by identifying the product and account mode

Do not copy a Spot recipe into a Futures screen. The available order types and required fields differ, and Margin adds its own borrowing and liquidation considerations.

Spot

Spot orders manage the asset you hold. A sell-side OCO (one-cancels-the-other) is commonly used for an existing long holding: one leg is the profit-taking limit order and the other is the protective stop leg. Binance links the two eligible orders and cancels the remaining leg when one executes, subject to the current symbol filters and order-list rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Margin

Margin uses Spot-style order-list concepts in the relevant Binance documentation, but borrowed balances, interest, and liquidation rules change the consequences of an exit. Confirm that the pair and account support the order combination before submitting it.

Futures

Futures orders control a derivatives position rather than a wallet balance. You must account for one-way or hedge mode, the position side, the contract quantity, and whether the order is intended to reduce or close the position. Futures documentation is separate from Spot documentation; Binance’s derivatives trade API reference is at the Portfolio Margin derivatives trade API.

Write the exit specification before enabling AI execution

Put these fields in writing for every strategy or symbol:

  • Invalidation condition: the market condition that proves the setup is no longer valid.
  • Profit condition: the condition at which the planned gain is realized, whether by closing all or part of the position.
  • Entry and exit prices: record the entry reference and the intended stop trigger and target.
  • Quantity: state how many units or contracts each exit may close. Decide whether the exits close the full position or only a portion.
  • Trigger reference: for Futures, choose and record Last Price or Mark Price, then verify that the order uses it.
  • Execution preference: decide whether submitting a market order is more important than controlling the submitted limit price.
  • Cancellation rule: specify what should happen to the other exit after a partial fill, manual close, strategy stop, or position reversal.

This is a planning framework, not a Binance-prescribed trading strategy. The correct distance depends on the setup, volatility, liquidity, fees, and the amount you can afford to lose. Binance’s order references explain how instructions behave; they do not establish a standard percentage that suits every account.

Choose the order mechanics

Choice What happens after the trigger Main trade-off Typical use
Spot STOP_LOSS or TAKE_PROFIT A market order can be submitted. Execution prioritizes submitting a market order; the fill price is not fixed. Conditional Spot exit where market execution is acceptable.
Spot STOP_LOSS_LIMIT or TAKE_PROFIT_LIMIT A limit order is placed. You control the submitted limit, but it may not execute if price moves through it. Conditional Spot exit where a limit price matters more than certainty of execution.
Spot OCO Two eligible orders are linked; execution of one cancels the other. The pair, side, prices, and symbol filters must satisfy Binance’s current rules. A paired target and protective stop on a holding.
Futures stop-market A market order is submitted after the trigger. There is no fixed execution price, and fast movement can produce slippage. A Futures exit where execution priority is intended.
Futures stop-limit A limit order is submitted after the trigger. The order can remain open or unfilled during a fast move. A Futures exit where controlling the submitted limit is worth the non-fill risk.
Futures trigger reference The condition can use Last Price or Mark Price, depending on the interface and API field. Different reference prices can trigger at different times. Choose deliberately and verify the selected working type.

Binance’s Futures order-type explanations, including stop-market and stop-limit behavior, are in Types of Order on Binance Futures.

Set a Spot stop and target with an OCO or conditional orders

When an OCO is appropriate

Use an OCO when you want a profit-taking order and a protective stop attached to the same Spot holding. For a long holding, that normally means a sell-side pair: the limit leg is above the current market for the target, while the stop leg is below it, subject to Binance’s current price relationships and symbol filters. A buy-side OCO has the opposite relationship. Check the live rules rather than assuming that every symbol accepts the same increments or distance.

Spot setup sequence

  1. Select the product and symbol. Open the Spot trading interface or the Spot API workflow, confirm the asset balance, and verify that the symbol supports the intended order-list type.
  2. Choose the paired order. Select OCO when both exits should be linked. If the symbol or interface does not offer OCO, use the supported conditional order types separately only if your automation can safely keep their quantities and cancellation states synchronized.
  3. Enter the target leg. Supply the limit price and the quantity to sell. The price must satisfy the current tick-size, minimum-notional, and side-specific OCO rules.
  4. Enter the stop leg. Supply the stop trigger. If using a stop-limit leg, also supply the limit price that will be submitted after the trigger. A stop-limit price that is too close to the trigger can be left behind by a rapidly falling market.
  5. Review the relationship and quantity. Confirm that the target and stop are on the correct side of the market, that the quantities are allowed, and that the order does not exceed the available balance.
  6. Submit and inspect the order list. Confirm that both legs are open, linked, and assigned the intended quantity. Do not assume that a successful request means both legs are protecting the position; inspect the resulting open-order state.
  7. Reconcile after any fill. When one leg executes, verify that Binance canceled the paired leg and that the remaining asset balance matches the expected position. If a partial fill occurs, check the residual quantity and decide whether a new exit is required.

Binance’s Spot REST reference describes OCO usage, order-list behavior, and the supported combinations. Review the current rules at the Spot REST API documentation before relying on an API implementation.

Separate Spot stop-market and stop-limit decisions

A Spot stop-market style order is designed to submit a market order once its trigger condition is met. It is not a guaranteed fill at the stop price. A Spot stop-limit style order submits the limit you specified; that gives price control but introduces the possibility that no trade occurs at that limit. The same distinction applies to take-profit conditional orders: a market-style target favors execution behavior, while a limit-style target favors price control.

Futures setup sequence

  1. Confirm the contract and mode. Select the exact symbol and check whether the account is in one-way mode or hedge mode. In hedge mode, a long and short can exist simultaneously, so the position side must be explicit.
  2. Choose the exit type. Select stop-market or stop-limit for the loss exit and the corresponding take-profit order type for the gain exit. Decide whether the order should close the entire position or a stated quantity.
  3. Select the side and position side. An exit normally uses the opposite trade side to the open position. In hedge mode, set the position side that the order is meant to reduce; do not rely on a default.
  4. Choose the trigger reference. Set the working type to the intended Last Price or Mark Price reference where the interface or API exposes that choice. Record it with the strategy so a later operator can tell why a trigger fired or did not fire.
  5. Set quantity or close-position behavior. Enter a quantity when closing a defined amount. If using a close-position instruction, verify its exact constraints. Binance’s derivatives API documents that closePosition=true cannot be combined with quantity or reduceOnly; these fields are not freely interchangeable.
  6. Use reduce-only intentionally. A reduce-only exit is intended to decrease an existing position rather than open the opposite side, but its availability and interaction with position mode must be checked for the product and endpoint you use.
  7. Submit and inspect the live state. Confirm the order type, trigger price, working type, side, position side, quantity, and reduce/close setting in the open-order and position views.
  8. Reconcile after fills or cancellations. Verify that the position size changed as expected and that a stale target or stop was canceled or replaced. A bot should not assume that an order remains active after a partial fill, manual close, liquidation, or network interruption.

Last Price versus Mark Price

Last Price reflects the most recent traded price, while Mark Price is a separate reference used by the derivatives system. Because they can differ, the same numeric trigger can be reached at different times. Neither reference is universally better. Choose the one that matches the strategy’s invalidation logic, document it, and verify the actual workingType or interface selection on every order.

Configure the AI layer with explicit limits

An AI signal or instruction should not be allowed to redefine the account’s safety boundaries implicitly. Configure the execution layer with:

  • an allow-list of products, symbols, and account modes;
  • maximum position size and maximum order notional;
  • a maximum number of simultaneous positions or pending exits;
  • per-order and per-day loss limits appropriate to your own risk plan;
  • permitted order types, leverage settings, and position sides;
  • API permissions limited to what the strategy needs, with withdrawals disabled for a trading-only key;
  • a defined behavior for rejected, canceled, expired, partially filled, or stale orders;
  • an approval requirement if you do not want automatic submission.

The Binance-hosted AI policy and terms document states: “Binance does not review, approve, or monitor individual AI-generated trade instructions prior to execution;” It also assigns users responsibility for setting appropriate risk parameters, position limits, and permissions through the AI configuration and account permissions. Read the current document at Binance’s AI policy and terms PDF and confirm that it applies to your account and jurisdiction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automatic execution may occur without per-trade approval unless you configure approval or another gate. Before enabling it, test with the smallest practical exposure or a supported simulation environment, and verify that the AI cannot submit symbols, quantities, or order types outside the policy you intended.

Choose size from your risk budget, not from a universal percentage

No official source cited here establishes a universally suitable stop distance or reward-to-risk ratio. A more defensible process starts with the amount you are willing to lose on one setup and lets the stop location follow the setup’s invalidation point.

For a simple linear position, define the entry price as E, the stop price as S, and the quantity as Q. The price distance at risk is |E − S|; an approximate gross loss is Q × |E − S|. Add an allowance for fees, funding where applicable, and possible slippage. Solve for quantity from the maximum loss you have chosen rather than moving the stop arbitrarily to fit a preferred position size. Futures contracts can have multipliers and symbol-specific specifications, so use the contract’s actual value instead of treating one unit as one quote-currency unit.

For a planned target T, the gross favorable distance is |T − E|. You can express that distance in personal “R” units, where one R is the planned loss distance, but an R multiple is a measurement convention—not evidence that a trade is profitable. Win rate, fees, funding, slippage, liquidity, and the quality of the setup determine the outcome. Avoid changing a stop farther away merely to avoid taking a loss; that changes the original invalidation rule and the risk calculation.

Build monitoring and reconciliation into the bot

Submitting an order is only one event in an automated workflow. After every submission, cancellation, fill, reconnect, and position change, reconcile the intended state with the exchange state.

  • Read the open-order or order-list state and confirm the stop and target are both present when they should be.
  • Check side, symbol, quantity, trigger price, limit price, position side, and Futures working type.
  • Compare the open position size with the quantity protected by exits.
  • Detect partial fills and recalculate the unprotected remainder.
  • Handle rejected orders caused by filters, balance, precision, or mode conflicts instead of silently continuing.
  • After a manual close or strategy shutdown, cancel residual exits or deliberately transfer them to the new position.
  • On restart, reload exchange state before sending new orders so the bot does not duplicate a stop or target.

These controls are implementation guidance inferred from the documented order and account-state surfaces; they are not a guarantee that an external bot will monitor or recover correctly. Use exchange responses and current API behavior as the source of truth, and review the active endpoint version and symbol filters before deploying.

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Order is rejected immediately Invalid tick size, minimum notional, quantity precision, insufficient balance, or unsupported order combination. Current symbol filters, available balance, side-specific OCO rules, and the exact product endpoint.
Stop never triggers The selected reference price has not reached the trigger, or the order is on the wrong symbol or position side. Last versus Mark Price, trigger direction, symbol, side, and live order status.
Stop triggered but no execution appears A stop-limit became a limit order that the market did not fill. Resulting limit price, remaining quantity, order status, and whether a market-style exit is required by the strategy.
Both target and stop remain open The orders were submitted separately or the OCO linkage failed. Whether the order-list identifier exists and whether the remaining leg was canceled after a fill.
