For a long ETH spot trade, a take-profit is normally a sell target above the current price and a stop-loss is a sell trigger below it. For a short or leveraged trade, you generally buy to close: the profit target is below the position and the protective stop is above it. In either case, a trigger only activates an order; it does not guarantee that you will be filled at that price.
The exact fields depend on whether you are trading spot, margin, a perpetual contract, or futures, and on the exchange and region. Use the platform-neutral workflow below, then verify the venue’s trigger reference, order linkage, position rules, and liquidation policy before submitting.
What stop-loss and take-profit orders actually do
A stop-loss is a conditional exit intended to limit damage when the market moves against an open position. A take-profit is a conditional exit intended to close at a favorable target. Both remain dormant until a specified trigger condition is met.

After the trigger, the exchange submits an execution order. A market-style exit seeks the available market liquidity and can fill at a price different from the trigger. A limit-style exit will execute only at its limit price or better, so a fast move can leave it partly filled or completely open. Coinbase summarizes the risk plainly: “Market-based exits may execute at a different price from the trigger price,” while “Limit orders execute only at the limit price or better and may remain unfilled.”

Neither order type guarantees a profit, a maximum loss, or protection from liquidation. Coinbase’s derivatives help documentation states: “TP/SL does not guarantee a profit, a maximum loss, or protection from liquidation.” Treat the orders as conditional instructions, not insurance.
First identify the position and product
Before entering an exit, write down four facts: the ETH market, whether the position is long or short, whether it is spot or a derivative, and how the exchange calculates the trigger. Order direction, available order types, quantity rules, and liquidation behavior can all change with those choices.
Long ETH spot
You own ETH and profit if its price rises. Both exits are normally sells:
| Exit | Typical direction | Relative level | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Take-profit | Sell | Above the current market or entry | Closes all or part of the holding after a favorable move |
| Stop-loss | Sell | Below the current market or entry | Closes all or part of the holding after an adverse move |
Binance’s documented sell-side OCO example places the take-profit limit above the current market, with the market above the stop-loss trigger. Those validation rules are specific to that implementation; do not assume another venue uses the same field relationships.
Short or leveraged ETH position
You benefit when ETH falls and normally buy to close. The take-profit is below the entry or current market, while the protective stop is above it. On derivatives, confirm whether the order is reduce-only, how the exchange handles one-way versus hedge position mode, and whether the quantity is contracts, ETH, or another unit.

Why spot and derivatives cannot be treated alike
A spot sell simply disposes of ETH you hold. A derivative exit may reduce a position, reserve margin, or interact with liquidation. Leverage can liquidate a position before your stop trigger is reached, especially when the exchange uses a mark price rather than the last traded price. Read the product’s contract and trigger rules instead of copying a spot example.
Choose the execution style
| Choice | Price control | Execution behavior | Main failure mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop-market | Low; the eventual fill is the market price | After the trigger, submits a market exit intended to execute against available liquidity | Slippage can make the fill materially different from the trigger, particularly during a sharp move or thin liquidity |
| Stop-limit | Higher; a limit sets the least favorable acceptable price | After the trigger, submits a limit order | If price moves beyond the limit, the order can remain unfilled and the position can stay open |
| Limit take-profit | High | Executes only at the limit price or better | A brief touch or fast reversal may leave it unfilled |
| Market take-profit | Low | Attempts immediate execution once activated | The fill can be worse than the displayed target because of spread and slippage |
Some exchanges use different names, such as stop order, stop-limit, trigger-limit, or TP/SL market. Read the preview text to determine whether the order submitted after the trigger is a market or limit order.
Check the trigger reference before setting a price
The number on an ETH chart is not necessarily the number that activates your conditional order. Exchanges may offer last-traded price, mark price, index price, or another reference. Crypto.com documents mark-price-triggered conditional TP/SL orders, and Coinbase instructs users to review the selected reference. A wick on the chart can therefore trigger—or fail to trigger—an order depending on the reference you selected.
- Last price: based on a trade executed on that venue; it can be noisy during a fast move.
- Mark price: an exchange-calculated fair-value reference commonly used in derivatives; it may differ from the displayed last price.
- Index price: a composite reference whose composition and update method are exchange-specific.
Use the reference shown in the order ticket, not an assumption from a charting app. Record it in your trading plan so you know what event is supposed to activate the exit.
Set both exits: a platform-neutral workflow
The labels differ by exchange, but the decisions below apply to most ETH order tickets.

- Select the exact market and product. Open the ETH pair or contract, then confirm spot, margin, perpetual, or futures. Check the quote currency, contract size, minimum quantity, price tick, and whether the position is isolated or cross margin.
- Define the invalidation and target before entering. Decide what market condition proves your trade idea wrong and what favorable condition justifies taking profit. Place the stop beyond the invalidation point rather than choosing a universal ETH price. Place the target where your plan says the move is no longer attractive. The available documentation explains mechanics, not a reliable ETH forecast or a personalized level.
- Determine the exit side and quantity. A long spot holding normally uses sell orders; a short normally uses buy-to-close orders. Choose whether each exit closes the full position or a specified fraction. On derivatives, enable reduce-only when the venue offers it and when the order is intended only to decrease the position.
- Choose market or limit execution. Use a stop-market when getting out is more important than controlling the exact fill. Use a stop-limit only if you accept the possibility that the position remains open. For a take-profit, decide whether price certainty or execution certainty matters more.
- Set the trigger reference. Select last, mark, index, or the platform’s other available reference. Compare the reference with the chart and note any warning that it differs from the displayed price.
- Enter trigger and limit fields carefully. A stop-limit usually has both a stop or trigger price and a limit price. The trigger activates the order; the limit controls the acceptable execution price. Leave enough separation for the venue’s tick size and for normal movement, but do not assume a particular offset works in every market.
- Link the exits when the venue supports it. Choose the exchange’s OCO, bracket, or attached TP/SL function if you want one leg to cancel the other. Read whether the feature attaches to the entry, activates only after a fill, or creates independent orders. Availability and behavior vary by product and region.
- Review the preview. Confirm side, quantity, trigger reference, trigger price, limit price, reduce-only status, estimated fees, and any margin or liquidation warning. Check that a sell stop is below a long position or that a buy stop is above a short position. Correct tick-size or minimum-size errors before submitting.
- Submit and verify the open-order list. Do not rely only on a confirmation toast. Confirm that both exits show the intended quantity and status, and that the position size is what you expect.
- Reconcile after every fill or edit. A partial entry, partial take-profit, manual close, or liquidation can leave quantities that no longer match. Cancel or amend leftover exits so an old order cannot unintentionally open a reverse position or reject because no position remains.
How linked OCO and bracket exits behave
OCO orders
OCO means one-cancels-the-other. Two conditional legs are linked so that execution or triggering of one is intended to cancel the other. In a long spot example, the upper take-profit sell and lower protective stop sell share the same asset quantity. Binance documents this pattern for its spot interface, including specific price relationships.
OCO is not a universal standard. Some venues cancel the other leg when one order fully executes; others change quantities after a partial fill, cancel only a remaining portion, or expose separate controls. Confirm the venue’s rules for partial fills, edits, and cancellation timing.
Bracket and attached TP/SL orders
A bracket usually combines an entry with a profit-taking leg and a protective leg. The exits may be created immediately but remain inactive until the entry fills, or they may be submitted as separate conditional orders. Kraken and Coinbase describe bracket implementations in which primary fills affect the attached quantities. Never assume an unfilled entry has already reserved or activated both exits.
Separate conditional orders
If no linked feature is available, you can place the take-profit and stop separately. This gives more control but creates an operational risk: one order may fill while the other remains open. Watch the position and cancel the unused leg promptly. A stale sell order on a closed long position can be rejected, or in some products can create an unintended short exposure.
Choosing levels without pretending there is a universal ETH number
No official help page establishes a dependable ETH price, percentage, or ratio for every trader. A level belongs to a specific entry, timeframe, position size, and thesis. Use a repeatable planning process instead of copying a number from someone else’s chart.

For a long
- Write the market condition that invalidates the setup, such as a break of the structure or support you used for entry.
- Place the protective trigger far enough beyond that invalidation to avoid an automatic exit from ordinary noise, while recognizing that a wider stop increases the amount at risk for the same position size.
- Set the target at the price or condition where your expected upside is realized. Account for fees, spread, and the possibility that a limit target is touched but not filled.
For a short
- Define the level above which the bearish thesis is invalid.
- Put the buy-to-close protective trigger above that level and verify that the order side cannot accidentally add to the short.
- Set the profit target below the entry according to the plan, then check that the contract’s quantity and reduce-only settings are correct.
These are planning methods, not a forecast. They cannot prevent gaps, slippage, exchange outages, or liquidation.
What to verify on derivatives before you submit
- Liquidation price and margin mode: a stop is not guaranteed to execute before liquidation, and cross and isolated margin can produce different outcomes.
- Trigger source: mark, index, and last prices can produce different activation times.
- Reduce-only: confirm that the exit can only shrink the position. Some venues adjust, cancel, or reject reduce-only orders when the remaining position or other open orders changes.
- Position mode: one-way and hedge modes may require a side or position identifier.
- Contract denomination: quantity may be contracts rather than ETH; verify the notional value and minimum order.
- Funding, fees, and liquidity: these affect the realized result and can leave a small residual position after a nominal full close.
Partial fills, edits, and position changes
Suppose half of an entry fills and the platform creates exits for the intended full size. The exits may be rejected, automatically reduced, or left oversized depending on the venue. If you manually close part of the position, inspect every attached order immediately. Coinbase specifically advises reviewing and canceling leftover TP/SL orders after reducing or closing a position.
When editing a stop-limit, check whether changing the trigger cancels and replaces the old order. A replacement can create a short interval with no protection. If the interface shows separate quantities for trigger and limit legs, verify both. After a partial take-profit, confirm that the stop now covers only the remaining position or deliberately decide to keep a different amount.
Common failure modes and fixes
The order is rejected
Check minimum quantity, tick-size precision, price bands, available balance, contract quantity, and whether reduce-only is incompatible with the current position. A stop placed on the wrong side of the market can also fail a venue’s validation rules. Correct the field that the error identifies; do not repeatedly resubmit an order you have not inspected.

The stop triggered but did not fill
This is most often a stop-limit behavior or a liquidity problem. Once triggered, a limit order still requires a counterparty at the limit or better. Cancel or amend it only after checking whether any part filled, and understand that the unfilled remainder leaves risk open.

The fill differs from the trigger
A market-based exit can slip, especially during a rapid move. Compare the fill price with the selected trigger reference, spread, and order-book conditions. A different fill is not proof that the trigger failed.
The chart crossed the level but nothing happened
Verify whether the order uses mark or index price rather than last price, whether the conditional order is active, and whether the quantity was canceled after a prior fill. The chart and trigger feed may legitimately disagree.
Both exits remain open after one filled
The orders may have been submitted separately, the venue may cancel only after a full execution, or a partial fill may have left a residual leg. Inspect statuses and cancel the leg that no longer matches the position.

The position was liquidated first
TP/SL cannot guarantee protection from liquidation. Review leverage, margin mode, liquidation price, trigger reference, and whether the stop was accepted and active before the move. Reducing leverage or position size is a risk-control decision, not a way to make a stop guarantee execution.
A pre-submission checklist
- Market, quote currency, and product are correct.
- Position is identified as long or short.
- Exit side closes rather than increases the position.
- Stop and target levels match the written plan.
- Trigger reference is understood and visible in the ticket.
- Market versus limit behavior is intentional.
- Stop-limit trigger and limit prices meet tick-size and venue rules.
- Quantity matches the actual position and uses the right contract unit.
- Reduce-only, position mode, margin mode, and liquidation information are correct.
- OCO or bracket linkage is enabled only if its cancellation and partial-fill rules are acceptable.
- Fees, liquidity, and possible slippage are included in the decision.
- Open orders will be checked again after any fill, partial close, edit, or cancellation.
Key takeaways
A trigger is an activation condition, not a guaranteed execution price. Stop-market exits favor the chance of getting out but can slip; stop-limit exits control price but can remain unfilled. Long spot ETH generally uses a sell target above and sell stop below, while a short reverses both side and direction. OCO and bracket features can coordinate the two exits, but their partial-fill and cancellation behavior is exchange-specific. Finally, a chart price may differ from the trigger reference, and leveraged derivatives can liquidate before a TP/SL order protects the position.
