Set the stop-loss and take-profit before, or immediately after, your Bitcoin entry fills. For a long position, place the stop below entry and the target above it; for a short position, reverse those directions. First decide the maximum cash amount you can lose, then size the position so the distance between entry and stop cannot exceed that amount. Use a bracket, OCO, or attached TP/SL workflow when your exchange supports it, and verify the trigger source, quantity, balance, and order status after submission.
A stop order is a risk-control instruction, not a guaranteed exit price. A stop-market generally has a better chance of executing but can suffer slippage. A stop-limit controls the worst acceptable price but can remain unfilled when Bitcoin moves quickly. No single percentage is safe for every BTC trade; the correct distance depends on your invalidation level, market conditions, product, and account settings.
What stop-loss and take-profit orders do
Both orders are conditional. They remain inactive until a specified trigger price is reached. Once triggered, the exchange releases a live market order or limit order, depending on the type you selected. Crypto.com describes this as automatically placing a market or limit order when the mark price reaches the user’s trigger. The trigger may therefore be different from the last price shown on a chart.

Stop-loss
A stop-loss closes all or part of a position when price moves against your plan. On a long BTC trade, the trigger is below entry. On a short trade, it is above entry. A stop-market becomes a market order after activation, so the eventual fill can be worse than the trigger.

Take-profit
A take-profit closes all or part of a position after price reaches your favorable target. It can be a market order after activation or a limit order that specifies the least favorable execution price you will accept. A limit take-profit can miss if the market touches the trigger and then moves away before your limit fills.
One-cancels-the-other behavior
In a bracket or OCO (one-cancels-the-other) setup, the stop and target are linked. When one side executes, the exchange cancels the untriggered side. Independent orders are not automatically linked: a manually closed position can leave its protective stop active, creating an unintended new sell or buy order.
Decide the risk before entering Bitcoin
Define the invalidation price
Choose the price at which your trade idea is no longer valid before you submit the entry. The stop belongs at that invalidation level, not at a number chosen after the market starts moving. Leave enough room for ordinary volatility; a stop placed inside normal noise can close the trade even when the original idea remains valid. The amount of room is a trading decision, not a universal BTC percentage.
Calculate position size from an affordable loss
Use this relationship:
position size = maximum cash loss ÷ (entry price − stop price)
For a long position, use the absolute price distance so the result is positive. Suppose an illustrative trade buys 0.1 BTC at $60,000 and places the stop at $57,000. The per-BTC risk is $3,000, so the planned loss before fees and slippage is about $300. If $300 is more than you can afford, reduce the BTC quantity or move the invalidation level only if doing so still reflects the trade thesis. Do not increase size simply to reach a preferred profit target.

Account for fees and slippage
The calculated loss is not a guarantee. A stop-market may fill below the trigger, and a stop execution can incur taker fees. A stop-limit may avoid a worse-than-limit fill but can fail to execute. Include a fee and slippage allowance in your cash-loss limit, especially in a fast market or a thin trading pair.
Confirm the product
Check whether the order is for spot BTC, a perpetual contract, or a dated future. Derivatives add leverage, margin requirements, funding or contract rules, and liquidation risk. A stop does not remove the possibility that liquidation, an outage, or a margin change closes the position first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Stop-market versus stop-limit
| Order type | What happens at the trigger | Main advantage | Main failure or cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop-market | Creates a market order | Usually the highest probability of an exit during a fast move | Fill price can slip through gaps and volatility; market execution generally pays taker fees |
| Stop-limit | Creates a limit order at your specified limit price | Sets a worst acceptable price for the order | May remain partially or completely unfilled if price moves past the limit |
| Take-profit market | Creates a market order after the target trigger | More likely to close when the target is reached | Execution price can differ from the target |
| Take-profit limit | Places a limit order at the target or a permitted limit price | Controls the minimum acceptable sale price on a long | Can miss in a brief price spike |
For a stop-limit sell on a long, the stop price activates the order and the limit price defines the lowest acceptable sale price. Leaving no distance between them can make a fast-market miss more likely. A wider buffer improves fill probability but gives up more price control. Exchanges can impose tick-size, price-band, and percentage restrictions on both values.
Check the trigger source and exchange rules
Mark, index, and last-traded price
Different venues trigger stops from the mark price, an index price, or the last traded price. Kraken states that its stop can trigger when the index or last-traded price, depending on availability, touches the stop; it then executes immediately as a market order and incurs taker fees. A chart based on another price feed can therefore appear to reach the level before or after the order activates.
Crypto.com mechanics and limits
Crypto.com documents a conditional trigger range above the instrument’s minimum tick and below 200% of the current mark price. Its spot limit-price bands can further restrict where a limit order may be placed. Treat these as placement constraints: a mathematically sensible level can still be rejected if it violates the venue’s tick or band rules.

Its attached TP/SL feature activates only after the parent limit order is fully executed, and the exchange says it may adjust the order notional. Crypto.com also lists OCO, stop-loss, and take-profit market or limit orders for fully funded spot, perpetual, and futures trades. If the required balance is unavailable when a conditional order triggers, the order may be canceled.

Binance stop-limit fields
In the BTC/USDT spot example, the Stop-Limit form asks for a stop price (activation), a limit price (execution bound), and the BTC amount. The exchange cautions that settings that are too tight or that ignore volatility can cause premature closure or losses. Confirm which field is the trigger and which is the limit before submitting.
Kraken linkage
Kraken says its default stop is an independent order unless you select position-close or reduce-only behavior. If you close the position by another method, an independent stop can remain open and must be canceled manually. Position-close or reduce-only settings can prevent the stop from opening an unintended reverse position, but availability depends on the product and interface.
Coinbase brackets
Coinbase documents take-profit/stop-loss attachments, bracket orders, and stop-limit orders. In its bracket workflow, execution of one trigger cancels the other leg. Coinbase also warns that downside protection may not execute during high market volatility, so a bracket is not an assurance of a fill.
Step-by-step: place both exits safely
- Write the trade plan. Record direction, entry idea, invalidation price, target, maximum cash loss, and whether the position is spot or leveraged.
- Calculate quantity. Divide the maximum acceptable loss, after allowing for fees and slippage, by the absolute distance from entry to stop. Round down to the exchange’s permitted quantity increment.
- Open the correct market. Select the exact BTC pair and product. Check whether you are on spot, perpetual, or futures and whether the account is fully funded or using margin.
- Choose linked protection when available. Select TP/SL, bracket, or OCO if you want one leg canceled automatically when the other executes. If the platform offers only independent orders, plan to cancel the remaining order yourself.
- Enter the stop trigger. For a long, put it below entry; for a short, put it above entry. Confirm whether the trigger uses mark, index, or last-traded price.
- Select execution behavior. Use stop-market when execution priority matters more than price certainty. Use stop-limit only when you understand that the order can remain unfilled, and set a realistic limit buffer for the market’s volatility.
- Enter the take-profit trigger. Put it above entry for a long or below entry for a short. For a limit target, check the exchange’s permitted price bands and tick size.
- Check quantity and balance. Make sure the protective quantity matches the filled position, not merely the amount you intended to buy. Verify that the account will have enough available asset or margin when the conditional order activates.
- Submit and verify. Confirm the order appears as open or conditional, with the correct side, trigger source, trigger price, limit price if applicable, quantity, reduce-only or position-close status, and linkage.
- Recheck after changes. Review the orders after partial fills, transfers, leverage or margin changes, and any manual reduction. An attached quantity can change with the fill, while an independent stop may stay at its original size.
How to choose practical stop and target prices
Use market structure, not a fixed percentage
Place the stop beyond the price level that would invalidate the setup, such as a clearly defined swing point or support area for a long. Then assess whether ordinary Bitcoin movement could touch that level. If the required stop is too far away for your cash-loss limit, reduce the position size or skip the trade; do not force the stop closer merely to make the position larger.

Set the target at a level where your plan expects sellers or buyers to appear, and make sure the possible gain justifies the defined risk after fees. The exchange documentation does not establish a universally correct stop percentage or risk-reward ratio, so any percentage presented as safe for every BTC trade would be misleading.
Illustrative long setup
| Item | Illustrative value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | $60,000 | Price at which the long fills |
| Stop trigger | $57,000 | Trade thesis is invalid below this level |
| Take-profit trigger | $66,000 | Planned favorable exit |
| Quantity | 0.1 BTC | Chosen so the $3,000 per-BTC distance fits the cash-loss limit |
This is a calculation example, not a recommendation or a forecast. A stop-market could fill below $57,000, while a stop-limit with a limit at $56,900 could remain open if the market falls through that price.
Illustrative short setup
For a short entered at $60,000, a stop belongs above entry, for example at a preplanned invalidation level of $63,000, and the take-profit belongs below entry. The same position-sizing formula applies using the absolute entry-to-stop distance. On a derivatives venue, also check liquidation price; liquidation can occur before the planned stop if margin is insufficient.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a Bitcoin stop order did not fill
The stop triggered but the limit did not execute
This is the defining risk of a stop-limit. After activation, it is simply a limit order. If bids move below your limit price, there may be no buyer at an acceptable price. You may need to cancel the resting order and reassess manually, but doing so leaves the position exposed while you decide.
The market moved through the trigger
Gaps, thin liquidity, and rapid volatility can produce a stop-market fill materially away from the trigger. A stop is not a guaranteed exit price. The same conditions can cause a take-profit limit to miss during a brief spike.

The wrong price feed was selected
A stop based on mark price may not activate when the last-traded price touches the level, or the reverse. Compare the order’s trigger source with the chart and understand the venue’s definition before changing the price.
The order was rejected by tick or price-band rules
Check minimum tick size, permitted distance from current mark, and spot limit-price bands. Crypto.com, for example, documents a trigger range above the minimum tick and below 200% of current mark price, with additional spot limit constraints.
The parent order never fully filled
Some attached workflows do not activate protection until the parent limit order is fully executed. Crypto.com states this explicitly for its attached TP/SL feature. A partially filled or unfilled parent can therefore leave no active stop for the amount you expected.
There was not enough balance
Conditional orders may be canceled when the required asset or margin is unavailable at trigger time. Transfers, other open orders, fees, and leverage changes can reduce available balance. Review the account ledger and the conditional-order status rather than assuming the stop is still live.
An independent order remained after a manual close
If the position was closed outside a linked bracket, an independent stop can remain open. Cancel it promptly, or it could later sell BTC you still hold or open an unintended position, depending on the order side and account mode.
Platform or connectivity failure occurred
An exchange outage, rejected request, delayed interface, or loss of connectivity can prevent submission or modification. Verify status from the exchange’s order-history and open-orders screens, not only from a chart or mobile notification. Never assume a failed screen action created protection.
Spot, perpetuals, and futures: what changes
| Consideration | Spot BTC | Perpetual or futures contract |
|---|---|---|
| Position | You buy or sell the underlying asset | You hold a contract with margin and contract-specific rules |
| Extra risk | No liquidation from leverage when fully paid, although price can still fall | Leverage can cause liquidation before the stop; margin, funding, and contract settings matter |
| Protection quantity | Match the BTC amount actually held | Match contract size and current position mode; use reduce-only or position-close when appropriate |
| Balance requirement | Asset or quote currency must be available when the order executes | Maintenance margin and available collateral must remain sufficient |
| Order availability | Depends on pair and venue | Depends on contract, account mode, and venue |
Do not copy a spot stop directly into a leveraged trade. Recalculate the cash risk using contract size and check the liquidation price after every leverage or margin change.

Quick Recap
Post-entry checks and maintenance
- Confirm the filled entry quantity and compare it with the stop and target quantities.
- Check whether the stop is market or limit and record the limit buffer if it is limit-bound.
- Verify mark, index, or last-traded trigger selection.
- Confirm reduce-only, position-close, bracket, or OCO status.
- Check available balance, margin, and any reserved funds.
- Review open orders after partial fills, transfers, and manual reductions.
- Cancel independent protection when the position is fully closed.
- Keep a record of the trigger, limit, fees, and final fill so you can evaluate execution separately from the trading idea.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a percentage first: A fixed percentage can be inside normal volatility or far beyond the setup’s invalidation point.
- Using the entry amount instead of the filled amount: Partial fills can leave you over- or under-protected.
- Confusing stop and limit fields: On a stop-limit form, the stop activates the order; the limit controls execution.
- Assuming a stop guarantees the displayed price: Market execution can slip, and limit execution can fail.
- Ignoring fees: Taker fees and slippage increase the realized loss or reduce the net target.
- Leaving a stop after closing manually: An independent order may later execute unexpectedly.
- Using leverage without checking liquidation: A stop cannot protect a position that is liquidated first.
- Failing to verify status: A rejected, canceled, or not-yet-activated order provides no protection.
A concise safety checklist
- Is the invalidation level defined before entry?
- Does the quantity keep the worst planned cash loss affordable after fees and slippage?
- Are stop and target on the correct side of entry?
- Do you know whether activation uses mark, index, or last-traded price?
- Would a stop-limit still fill if Bitcoin moves quickly?
- Are tick-size, price-band, notional, and balance requirements satisfied?
- Is the order linked to the position, or will you need to cancel it manually?
- Did you verify the live order and quantity after the entry filled?
