A stop-loss is a trading instruction that can submit a sell (or buy-to-cover) order when a specified price is reached. A price alert is only a notification asking you to review the position. They are not interchangeable: a stop can trigger a trade, while an alert cannot sell shares. The stop price is a trigger, not a guaranteed execution price.
This broker-neutral guide explains how each feature works, how to enter it without relying on a universal app layout, and how to check the risks, trigger rules, duration and status that differ among brokerage firms.
Stop-loss and price alert: the essential difference
A stop order is sent to your brokerage as an instruction. For a long position, you normally use a sell stop below the current market price. When the broker’s trigger condition is met, the stop order converts into a market order. The resulting fill can be above or below the stop price, especially when the market moves quickly. The SEC Investor Bulletin states that the stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order (SEC, updated August 18, 2026).
Recommended Free Tools
A price alert does not enter, change or cancel an order. It sends an account notification when the condition and price you selected are met, if your firm supports that feature. Alert availability and the available conditions vary by investment firm (SEC, updated March 2026). You must still decide whether to trade.

How a stop order is triggered and filled
The stop price is a trigger
Suppose a stock is trading at $50 and you enter a sell stop with a $45 stop price. If the broker’s trigger standard determines that $45 has been reached, the order changes into a market order. The market order then seeks the best available price, which could be $45, lower, or—during a fast move—substantially lower. The SEC describes this conversion and its execution-price risk in its stop-order bulletin.
Long and short positions use opposite directions
- For a long position you already own, a protective sell stop is entered below the current market price.
- For a short position, the protective instruction is a buy stop entered above the current market price to buy shares and close the short.
- A buy stop can also be used for an entry strategy when you want to buy only if price rises to a chosen level. That is an order decision, not a recommendation that a rise will continue.
Entering a sell stop above the current market, or a buy stop below it, may be rejected or behave differently under a firm’s rules. Check the order ticket’s validation message and the firm’s order-type documentation.
Trigger standards differ
Brokerage firms may use last-sale prices, quotation prices, or another stated standard to decide whether a stop has triggered. Two firms can therefore treat the same market prints differently. Read the broker’s explanation of its trigger source, eligible trading sessions and any special handling before relying on the order. The SEC discusses these firm-level differences in Understanding Order Types and the stop-order bulletin.
Intraday moves and gaps matter
A brief intraday move can trigger a stop even if the stock later closes near its previous price. If trading resumes at a very different price, the market order can fill far from the stop. A stop is therefore an exit mechanism, not a promise that your loss will equal the distance between your entry and stop.
Stop versus stop-limit: choose the trade-off deliberately
A stop-limit order adds a limit price. Once the stop trigger is reached, the order becomes a limit order and can execute only at the limit price or better. This gives you more control over the worst acceptable execution price, but a fast-moving market can pass that limit and leave the order unfilled.

| Question | Stop order | Stop-limit order |
|---|---|---|
| What is created after triggering? | Market order | Limit order |
| Can you constrain the fill price? | No; execution price is not guaranteed | Yes; fills are limited to the stated limit or better |
| What is the main failure mode? | Execution at a price materially different from the stop | No execution if the market moves beyond the limit |
| What must the ticket include? | Stop price | Stop price and limit price |
| Are duration and availability universal? | No; firm policies vary | No; firm policies vary |
Neither order type is automatically safer. A stop prioritizes getting an order into the market after the trigger; a stop-limit prioritizes a price boundary and accepts the possibility of no fill. The SEC’s order-type guidance explains both trade-offs.
Before entering a stop: decisions to make
Confirm the position and side
Verify the exact symbol, exchange listing if your broker shows more than one, number of shares and whether the position is long or short. A sell stop reduces a long position; a buy stop closes or reduces a short position. Do not assume that a symbol’s name alone identifies the intended holding.

Write down whether the order is intended as a protective exit, a planned entry, or a temporary instruction around a particular event. This prevents accidentally using a buy stop where a sell stop was intended, or leaving an old order active after your plan changes.
Decide how much loss you can tolerate
The sources do not establish a universal percentage or dollar distance that suits every investor. A practical way to expose the arithmetic is to calculate the hypothetical position risk as:
Long-position risk per share = entry price − stop price
Approximate position risk = risk per share × shares

Order types, trigger standards, trading-session eligibility and duration choices vary by firm. Day and good-til-canceled (GTC) instructions may be available, but GTC limits and renewal rules are broker-specific (SEC order-type guidance). If the ticket does not offer the instruction you need, do not substitute a different order without understanding its behavior.
How to set a protective sell stop in a brokerage account
The labels and button positions differ by broker, so the following is a field-by-field procedure rather than a promised click path.
- Open the stock order ticket. Start from the account’s trade or order-entry area and select the intended stock. Confirm the symbol and listing.
- Select the sell action. Choose Sell for a long position. If you are covering a short, the action is normally Buy; use the broker’s wording for closing a short.
- Choose the supported stop instruction. Select Stop or Stop market for a stop that converts to a market order, or select Stop-limit only if you accept the possibility of no execution.
- Enter the quantity. Type the number of shares the order should affect. Check whether the firm distinguishes whole shares from fractional shares and whether the instruction applies to the entire position or only part of it.
- Enter the stop price. For a long-position sell stop, the stop is normally below the current market. For a stop-limit, enter the additional limit price exactly as the ticket requests. The stop price triggers; it is not a guaranteed fill price.
- Choose duration. Select a duration offered by the broker, such as Day or GTC, and read the expiration or renewal rule. A GTC instruction is not a universal, indefinite guarantee; firms impose their own limits.
- Review trigger and session rules. Look for the firm’s explanation of last-sale versus quotation triggering, eligible sessions and any warnings about fast markets. If the policy is unclear, ask the firm before submitting.
- Preview and submit. Recheck symbol, side, quantity, order type, stop price, limit price if applicable and duration. Submit only when every field matches the written plan.
- Verify the resulting status. Confirm that the order appears as open, pending or otherwise active in the account’s orders view. Save the confirmation number if provided.
The SEC’s stop-order bulletin and order-type bulletin describe the mechanics, but neither specifies a universal sequence of interface controls.
How to set a price alert
Because alert tools differ more widely than order tickets, use your firm’s help page or the labels visible in your account.

- Open price-alert or notification settings. This may be attached to the quote page, watchlist, portfolio holding or a general alerts center.
- Select the stock. Confirm the symbol and, where shown, the exchange listing.
- Choose the condition offered. Firms may provide a target above or below the current price, a cross-through condition, or another rule. Select only a condition whose wording you understand.
- Enter the target value. Use the exact price or condition required by the form. An alert target is not an order price and will not sell automatically.
- Choose delivery settings. Select the notification methods and frequency the firm offers. If the account allows one-time or recurring alerts, read the distinction before saving.
- Save and verify. Confirm that the alert is listed as active, with the correct symbol, condition, target and delivery setting. Test your account’s notification permissions if the firm provides a test option.
Availability varies by investment firm, so an absent alert menu does not indicate that your account is malfunctioning. The SEC identifies account-alert availability as a firm-level feature (Investor Bulletin, March 2026).
Using a stop and an alert together
The two tools can serve different moments in the same plan. A stop can remain active as an automated exit instruction, while an alert can notify you when price reaches a separate review level. For example, an investor might set an alert at a level where they want to reassess the thesis and a protective stop farther away. The alert prompts a decision; the stop remains the broker instruction. This is an illustration of workflow, not a recommendation for any particular price spacing.
Keep the records separate. The alert should appear in the notifications or alerts list; the stop should appear in open orders. Cancel or change each one through its own control when your position or plan changes. Acknowledging an alert does not cancel a stop, and editing a stop does not necessarily change an alert.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Hypothetical example: why the numbers can diverge
Assume, solely for illustration, that you own 100 shares bought at $50 and enter a sell stop at $45. If the broker’s trigger rule is met while the next available market prices are $44.20 and $43.80, the converted market order could fill around those available prices rather than at $45. The $45 figure activated the order; it did not guarantee the sale price.
If instead you enter a stop-limit with a $45 stop and a $44.50 limit, the order becomes a limit sell after triggering. It may fill at $44.50 or better, but if the market moves directly below $44.50 and does not return, the shares can remain unsold. The example demonstrates the execution-versus-price-control trade-off and is not a suggested level.

Common problems and how to diagnose them
The order is rejected
Read the broker’s rejection message rather than immediately resubmitting. Check whether the selected stop type is supported for that security and account, whether the stop direction matches the current market, and whether the chosen duration is available. Firms can impose different order-type and duration rules.
The order triggered at an unexpected price
Review the execution report and the broker’s trigger policy. A stop becomes a market order, and the execution price can differ from the stop during rapid movement or a gap. Also verify whether the firm uses last-sale prices or quotations for triggering.
The stop-limit did not sell
That outcome is possible by design. After triggering, a stop-limit can execute only at the limit price or better. If the market moved beyond the limit, the order may remain open or expire according to its duration. Decide whether to cancel, replace or leave it only after reassessing the position and the broker’s status information.

Confirm that the alert is listed as active, the condition and target are correct, and the account’s chosen notification method is enabled. If the firm does not offer price alerts for that account or security, there may be no setting to activate. Contact the broker for its supported alert conditions and delivery behavior.
The position changed but the old instruction remains
After selling shares, adding shares or changing your plan, inspect open orders and active alerts. An old stop can apply to a different quantity than you intend, while an old alert can continue generating notifications. Update or cancel each item explicitly.
Safety and account-control checks
Use the broker’s authenticated website or app, review confirmations and protect the account credentials used to manage orders. Alerts can help you notice activity, but they are not a substitute for reviewing open orders and account statements. The SEC’s online-investing guidance emphasizes understanding how your firm’s systems work and checking account activity (SEC Online Investing).
