The reliable sequence is: define the price that invalidates your trade, measure the stop distance in Nifty futures points, multiply that distance by the contract’s current units per lot, and then round down the number of lots that fits your pre-set rupee loss limit. Margin is collateral required to carry the position; it is not your maximum loss. A stop can also fill worse than its trigger in a gap or fast market, so the calculation is an estimate rather than a guarantee.
This guide explains how to set stop-loss and position size for Nifty futures trades, including how many Nifty lots to trade and how to calculate risk in Nifty futures. It is educational information, not an individualized trading recommendation.
What a Nifty 50 futures contract represents
Nifty 50 futures are futures on the Nifty 50 index. The National Stock Exchange identifies the instrument as FUTIDX, lists Nifty 50 as the underlying, and publishes the contract characteristics, including the market lot and maturity. The exchange currently describes three consecutive monthly futures contracts. Expiry is the last Tuesday of the expiry month, or the preceding trading day when that Tuesday is a holiday.

The permitted lot size can change, so read the current NSE lot-size and quantity-freeze file for the exact contract and trading date instead of copying a number from an old article or spreadsheet. Verify the active expiry before submitting an order.

| Item | What to verify | Why it matters to sizing |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying | Nifty 50 index | The quoted futures price is in index points. |
| Instrument | FUTIDX | Confirms you are sizing an index-futures position rather than an equity or option. |
| Available maturities | Three consecutive monthly contracts, according to NSE’s contract description | Each expiry can have different liquidity, basis and margin conditions. |
| Expiry rule | Last Tuesday of the expiry month, or the previous trading day if that Tuesday is a holiday | Prevents using the wrong number of days or contract while planning a trade. |
| Market lot | Current permitted quantity in the NSE file | Every index point is multiplied by this quantity to estimate one-lot price risk. |
The position-sizing formula
For a stop placed on the futures contract, use the following sequence:
- Stop distance: calculate the absolute difference between planned entry and stop in index points.
- Gross price risk per lot: multiply stop distance by the current units in one lot.
- All-in estimated risk per lot: add a realistic allowance for brokerage, exchange charges, taxes and likely slippage.
- Whole-lot count: divide your rupee risk cap by the all-in estimated risk per lot and round down.
In code form:
gross risk per lot = stop distance (points) × units per lot
estimated total risk = stop distance × units per lot × number of lots
For a more conservative sizing calculation:
lots = floor(risk limit ÷ (stop distance × units per lot + per-lot cost/slippage allowance))
Use positive point values in the formula. A long trade’s distance is planned entry − stop. A short trade’s distance is stop − planned entry. If your stop order is on the futures contract, use futures prices consistently; do not silently combine a spot-index entry with a futures stop when the two prices differ.
Step 1: Define the trade and its invalidation level
Start with the trade idea, not the lot count. Write down why you would enter and the price at which that reason is no longer valid. That price is the invalidation level and is the logical location for the protective stop.
Structure or thesis invalidation
A structure-based stop sits beyond the swing, breakout level, support, resistance or other market feature that makes the setup invalid. Its distance may vary from trade to trade. The advantage is that the stop is tied to the idea; the disadvantage is that a wide structure can produce a large rupee loss per lot and leave no affordable whole-lot position.
Fixed-point stop
A fixed-point stop uses the same number of index points for every trade. It is easy to record and calculate, but the distance may be too tight for a volatile market or unnecessarily wide for a quiet one. A source does not establish one universally correct stop method. Suitability depends on the strategy, market conditions and the particular expiry’s liquidity.

Do not choose the stop after choosing size
Selecting one lot first and then moving the stop to fit an account limit reverses the risk decision. It can place the stop inside normal market noise or at a level where the original thesis is still valid. Decide the invalidation level first; if the resulting risk is unaffordable, change the trade or skip it rather than pretending the risk is smaller.
Step 2: Measure the stop distance in futures points
Record the planned entry and stop before the order is sent. For example, a long planned at 22,000 with a stop at 21,960 has a 40-point distance. A short planned at 22,000 with a stop at 22,040 also has a 40-point distance.
Use the price scale of the instrument carrying the stop. The futures contract can trade at a premium or discount to the spot index, so a stop calculated from a spot chart may not be the same distance from the futures entry. If you analyze spot but execute futures, translate the invalidation level into a futures price and document the assumption.

A narrower stop is valid only if the trade thesis remains invalidated there and the market’s normal movement supports it.
Step 3: Confirm the current contract quantity
Open the current NSE permitted lot-size data for the contract and date. Check the quantity for the exact Nifty expiry you intend to trade and note any quantity-freeze or order-size information that affects order entry. Do not rely on a historical lot size shown in a calculator, charting template or social-media post.
The quantity is the multiplier that converts index points into rupees. If the lot size changes, the same 40-point stop produces a different loss per lot, and the correct lot count changes even when your account and chart are unchanged.
Step 4: Calculate estimated rupee risk per lot
Multiply the measured point distance by the verified units per lot. The result is the gross price component before transaction costs and slippage.

For a short position, the arithmetic is identical because the loss occurs when price rises through the stop. Direction changes the sign of the trade’s payoff, not the positive distance used for risk sizing.
Step 5: Set a rupee risk cap independently of margin
Choose the maximum planned loss for this one trade before calculating lots. The cap must come from your own finances, strategy and ability to withstand a losing trade. There is no universal risk percentage established here that is suitable for every reader.
Your cap is a loss budget, not the amount shown as “available margin.” A position can consume ₹X of margin while losing substantially more than ₹X if the index moves against it. Conversely, a large account may have enough margin for many lots but still set a much smaller personal loss limit.
Include a cost and execution allowance. Brokerage, exchange fees, taxes and other charges vary by broker, account and transaction. Slippage can be material when the market moves quickly. If you cannot obtain a reliable current figure, use a deliberately conservative allowance and treat the result as an estimate.
Step 6: Round down to a whole number of lots
Divide the rupee cap by estimated all-in risk per lot and apply the floor function. Futures contracts are traded in whole lots, so a fractional answer cannot be submitted.
| Hypothetical input | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Risk cap ₹5,000; gross risk ₹2,000 per lot; no extra allowance shown | ₹5,000 ÷ ₹2,000 = 2.5; round down | 2 lots, with ₹4,000 gross price risk before costs |
| Risk cap ₹3,000; gross risk ₹2,000 per lot; no extra allowance shown | ₹3,000 ÷ ₹2,000 = 1.5; round down | 1 lot, with ₹2,000 gross price risk before costs |
| Risk cap ₹1,500; gross risk ₹2,000 per lot | ₹1,500 ÷ ₹2,000 = 0.75; round down | 0 lots |
The table omits costs only to show the rounding arithmetic. In actual planning, add your per-lot allowance before dividing. Never round up to “use the account efficiently.” Rounding up defeats the loss cap.
When the answer is less than one lot
If the result is below one, you have three honest choices: reduce the stop distance only if the thesis still supports that level, find a different setup or expiry whose risk fits, or skip the trade. Do not convert a less-than-one-lot result into a one-lot order by assuming margin will make the loss manageable.

Margin is collateral, not maximum risk
NSE Clearing describes online SPAN-based margining and upfront collection of initial margin. Its margin methodology says initial margins are generally based on 99% value-at-risk over a one-day horizon. For futures where mark-to-market settlement cannot be collected before the next trading day, the stated methodology uses a two-day horizon. These are exchange risk-control calculations, not a personal safe-loss allowance.

Margin requirements can change with volatility, the futures price, the spot-futures relationship and other risk parameters. SEBI’s educational material also explains that futures payoffs are directional and that margin depends on factors such as volatility and the spot/futures difference. Historical margin examples in an older SEBI document are not current Nifty requirements and should not be used as an order-entry figure.
Liquidity checks before entry
- Confirm that available funds cover the broker’s current initial and additional margin requirements.
- Leave capacity for adverse mark-to-market movement; a stop may not fill immediately.
- Do not use every rupee of available margin merely because the broker permits the order.
- Recheck margin after a volatility or contract-parameter change.
Why a stop does not guarantee the calculated loss
A stop trigger is an instruction to start an exit, not a guaranteed execution price. In a gap, sudden announcement or fast market, the next available price can be worse than the trigger. The realized loss can therefore exceed stop distance × lot quantity × lots. The same applies when the market is illiquid or the order is delayed.
Stop-market versus stop-limit considerations
A stop-market order generally prioritizes getting an exit after the trigger, while exposing you to the price available at that time. A stop-limit order controls the worst acceptable price but may remain unfilled if the market jumps beyond the limit. The appropriate choice depends on your broker’s exact order behavior, the contract’s liquidity and your tolerance for execution uncertainty. Verify the broker’s current rules; this guide does not establish broker-specific trigger or fill statistics.

Allow for slippage explicitly
Use a per-lot slippage allowance in the sizing formula, and review whether the assumed allowance is realistic for the expiry and time of day. If the market repeatedly fills beyond the assumed amount, reduce lots or stop trading that setup until the risk estimate reflects actual conditions.
How many Nifty lots should I trade?
There is no fixed answer without four inputs: your invalidation-based stop distance, the current units per lot, your rupee risk cap and a cost/slippage allowance. The decision process is:
- Write the entry idea and invalidation level.
- Translate both prices into the futures contract’s price scale.
- Measure the positive point distance.
- Read the current lot quantity from NSE’s file.
- Estimate gross and all-in risk per lot.
- Divide the risk cap by all-in risk per lot and round down.
- Reject the trade if the result is zero or if available liquidity cannot support the position safely.
Two trades on the same day can therefore require different lot counts. A wider structural stop may permit one lot, while a tighter but valid stop may permit several. That difference is a consequence of risk distance, not a reason to force both trades into the same size.

Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Copying an old lot size
Symptom: your calculator uses a quantity from an old post. Fix: replace it with the current NSE permitted lot-size data for the exact contract and date.
Using margin as the risk number
Symptom: you size the trade to the margin shown in the order window. Fix: calculate loss from points, units per lot and lots; check margin separately as a liquidity requirement.
Rounding up
Symptom: a result of 1.8 lots becomes two lots. Fix: floor the result to one lot and include costs before rounding.

A compact pre-trade worksheet
| Field | Your entry |
|---|---|
| Contract and expiry | Exact Nifty futures month |
| Planned futures entry | Price in index points |
| Invalidation and stop | Price in the same futures scale |
| Stop distance | Absolute point difference |
| Current units per lot | Verified from NSE data |
| Gross risk per lot | Distance × units |
| Cost and slippage allowance | Current, conservative estimate |
| All-in risk per lot | Gross risk + allowance |
| Rupee risk cap | Pre-set personal limit |
| Lots | Floor(risk cap ÷ all-in risk per lot) |
| Margin and liquidity check | Completed before order entry |
Keep the completed worksheet with the trade record. If the contract quantity, entry, stop or costs change, recompute rather than editing only the lot count.
Bottom line for Nifty futures risk
Start with the invalidation level, not the margin available. Convert its distance into rupees using the current Nifty futures lot quantity, add a realistic cost and slippage allowance, and round the risk-cap calculation down to whole lots. Check the live contract, expiry, margin and execution conditions immediately before entry. If one lot exceeds your loss limit, the disciplined answer is to change the trade only when the thesis permits it—or to stand aside.
