A stock-price alert should prompt a planned review, not an automatic trade. Open the alert controls on your brokerage account, choose a price or percentage condition that would make you reassess the investment, select the sessions and delivery methods you actually need, and define what you will check when the notice arrives. Then pause: review reliable company information, your original investment reasons, time horizon and portfolio allocation before deciding whether anything has changed.
Alert menus differ by brokerage, account type and jurisdiction. The examples below describe capabilities documented by Fidelity, Webull and Robinhood, but your screen may use different labels or offer fewer choices. This is general education, not individualized investment advice.
What a stock-price alert does—and does not do
A price alert is a notification rule. You tell the brokerage to watch a security and notify you when a condition is met, such as the price moving above or below a level. Depending on the service, you may also be able to watch a percentage move, trading volume, a news event, a technical indicator or a 52-week high or low.
The alert does not place an order. You still decide what to do after seeing it. A notification can arrive while you are away from your device, after a fast move has reversed, or without explaining why the price changed.

Do not call a notification a “stop loss.” A stop order is an order instruction. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that when a stop order reaches its stop price, it becomes a market order, and the execution price can differ significantly from the stop price. Its investor bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, states: “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.” A short-lived intraday move can trigger a stop or stop-limit order; an alert merely tells you that the condition occurred.
Choose the condition that deserves your attention
Start with the decision you want the notification to support. The most useful trigger is the one that would cause you to perform a specific review, not the one that generates the most messages.
| Trigger type | What it watches | Useful review prompt | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Absolute price | Price crossing a level above or below the current quote | “Has the valuation or my investment thesis changed enough to investigate?” | A fixed dollar move has different meaning for a $20 stock and a $400 stock. |
| Percentage move | A rise or fall by a selected percentage | “Is this move unusual for this holding, and is there a material cause?” | A percentage setting is a product control, not a universal recommendation. |
| Volume | Trading activity reaching a selected condition | “Is there news or a corporate event behind unusual activity?” | High volume alone does not establish direction or a reason to trade. |
| News | A brokerage-defined company or market news event | “Does this announcement affect the original reasons I invested?” | Coverage, timing and categories differ by provider. |
| Technical condition | For example, a moving-average or other chart condition | “Should I examine the chart together with fundamentals and my plan?” | A technical signal is not a stand-alone buy or sell instruction. |
| High/low milestone | Such as a 52-week high or low | “Has the risk or allocation become different from what I intended?” | A milestone can reflect broad market movement rather than a company-specific change. |
Brokerage help pages document these categories differently. Fidelity, Webull and Robinhood all describe price or percentage-related controls, while the availability of volume, news and technical choices depends on the service and account.
How to set a stock price alert
The exact menu path changes, but the workflow is consistent. Use the security’s quote page, chart or dedicated alert menu in the brokerage website or app.

- Open the security page. Search for the company or fund and open its quote or chart. Look for Alerts, a bell icon, an alert-management link or an overflow menu.
- Select the trigger. Choose a price above or below the current quote, or select a percentage-change condition if the platform offers it. Enter the level and review the direction carefully; “above” and “below” are not interchangeable.
- Set the active sessions. Choose regular trading hours only, or include extended-hours and overnight sessions when those options are available. A move in a thinly traded session can be more abrupt and less representative than a regular-hours quote.
- Choose recurrence. Decide whether the alert should fire once, once per day, on every qualifying move or according to another frequency offered by the brokerage. A recurring rule can create a stream of notices after one volatile event.
- Choose delivery. Select the available combination of in-app, mobile push, email, text message or another channel. Confirm that the account email and phone number are current and that operating-system notification permissions are enabled.
- Save and verify the rule. Reopen the alert list and check the symbol, direction, threshold, session coverage, recurrence and delivery channel. Take a screenshot or note the rule if you use several accounts.
Robinhood documents configurable 5% and 10% movement alert settings. Those are available product choices, not evidence that either percentage is appropriate for every stock or investor. Fidelity and Webull expose their own combinations of price, percentage and other alert controls, and their labels can change with app updates.
Delivery is not guaranteed
Push notifications depend on device settings, connectivity and the brokerage’s delivery systems. Robinhood cautions that push delivery is not guaranteed. Fidelity notes that wireless-provider fees may apply to device delivery. If a notice is important, use a secondary channel when the account permits it, but do not assume any alert system is a substitute for monitoring an order you have already submitted.
Decide what the alert is supposed to make you do
Before saving a rule, write one sentence describing the review it will trigger. Examples include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- “Read the latest company announcement and earnings release before considering any change.”
- “Check whether this move changes the holding’s percentage of my portfolio.”
- “Compare the current facts with the original investment thesis and my time horizon.”
- “Look for a broad market or sector move before treating this as company-specific.”
This is a practical application of the SEC’s general advice to create and follow a financial plan; it is not a regulator-prescribed alert formula. The sentence prevents an alert from silently becoming an instruction to buy or sell.

What to do when the alert fires
Use a pause-and-review routine rather than acting from the notification banner. A price move alone does not identify its cause or determine the appropriate action.
- Pause before opening an order ticket. Close or set aside the trading screen long enough to read the notification accurately. Note the time, price and session in which it occurred.
- Confirm the move. Check a current quote and whether the trigger occurred during regular, extended or overnight trading. Quotes can change rapidly, and real-time data may lag or be delayed depending on the account and market.
- Check reliable information. Read the company’s investor-relations release, regulatory filing or other dependable market reporting. Identify whether earnings, guidance, a corporate action, an industry event or broad-market news explains the move.
- Revisit the investment reason. Ask whether the facts that justified owning the security have changed. A price crossing a line is not itself an answer.
- Check your plan and allocation. Consider your time horizon, long-term goals, diversification and asset allocation. A holding that has grown far beyond its planned weight raises a different question from a temporary market-wide decline.
- Choose an action deliberately. Possible outcomes include doing nothing, recording the event for a later scheduled review, rebalancing according to an existing plan or seeking qualified personal advice. Do not convert the alert into an automatic order merely because it arrived.
- Review the alert afterward. Delete, edit or leave the rule active based on its purpose. Record the reason for the decision so the next alert is evaluated against the same plan.
The SEC warns that real-time social discussion and sentiment-driven indicators can encourage emotionally driven or impulsive decisions. Vanguard’s investor education makes the same behavioral point: “Don’t let the day-to-day market noise send you off course.”
If the price rises
A gain can trigger optimism, fear of missing out or an urge to lock in a profit. First check whether the increase reflects a durable change in the business, a temporary announcement, a sector-wide move or a thin session. Then compare the position with your intended allocation and tax or account constraints before considering any action.

If the price falls
A decline can reflect company-specific deterioration, a broad market shock, an ex-dividend adjustment or ordinary volatility. Read the relevant announcement and compare it with your original thesis. Selling solely to stop the discomfort of seeing a lower quote can turn a notification into the impulsive behavior the routine is meant to prevent.
How to choose a threshold without inventing a “perfect” percentage
No reviewed source establishes one ideal price or percentage threshold for every investor or security. The appropriate condition depends on the holding’s normal volatility, your time horizon, its role in the portfolio and the event you intend to investigate.

Use these questions to design a threshold:
- What decision would this move trigger? If you would not investigate or rebalance after a move, an alert may add noise rather than information.
- Is the trigger scale-appropriate? A fixed-dollar level may be intuitive for a planned valuation review, while a percentage condition can be easier to compare across holdings.
- How often does ordinary volatility cross it? If routine fluctuations would trigger the rule repeatedly, widen the condition, use a less frequent setting or remove it.
- Does the holding have a scheduled catalyst? Earnings, a product announcement or a rebalance date may be better reasons for a review than an arbitrary intraday line.
- What is your time horizon? A long-term investor generally needs a different review cadence from someone managing a short-term strategy. The threshold should not contradict the plan.
- Will the alert run outside regular hours? Include extended or overnight sessions only when you understand that choice and can evaluate the resulting information.
Do not treat Robinhood’s documented 5% or 10% movement settings, or any other brokerage preset, as a recommendation. They describe what the product can do, not what you should select.
Compare alert features before relying on them
When evaluating a brokerage’s alert tools, compare the controls that affect whether a notification is useful and manageable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Feature to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Trigger types | Can you use absolute price, percentage move, volume, news, technical conditions and high/low milestones, or only a subset? |
| Frequency | Is the rule one-time, recurring or configurable by day or event? |
| Trading sessions | Can you restrict it to regular hours or include extended and overnight sessions? |
| Delivery | Are in-app, push, email and text available? Are permissions, contact details or carrier charges relevant? |
| Persistence | Does a triggered rule disappear, remain active or require manual deletion? |
| Management | Can you see, edit, pause and delete all active alerts from one list? |
For example, Fidelity says its price-movement and percentage-change alerts are removed from active alerts after they trigger, while its 52-week and moving-average alerts remain active until deleted. Other providers can behave differently, so check the active-alert list after a trigger rather than assuming the rule reset itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Alerts versus stop and stop-limit orders
An alert and an order solve different problems:
| Characteristic | Price alert | Stop order | Stop-limit order |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A notification condition | An instruction that becomes a market order when triggered | An instruction that becomes a limit order when triggered |
| Does it submit a trade? | No | Yes, subject to order acceptance and execution conditions | It submits a limit order, but execution is not guaranteed |
| Execution-price certainty | Not applicable | The stop price is a trigger, not a guaranteed execution price | The limit constrains price, but the order may not fill |
| Can a brief intraday move trigger it? | Yes, as a notification | Yes | Yes |
The SEC notes that a stop order can execute at a price significantly different from its stop price, especially in a fast market. A stop-limit can avoid an execution beyond the selected limit, but it can remain unfilled while the market moves away. Neither order type should be described as a guaranteed exit.

Reduce notification overload
Too many alerts make every banner feel urgent. Keep a small inventory and audit it on a schedule.
- Use one alert for a defined review question instead of several nearby price lines.
- Prefer one-time triggers for events you will investigate immediately; use recurring rules only when repeated notices serve a clear purpose.
- Limit overnight coverage when you cannot evaluate the information promptly.
- Separate company-specific alerts from broad market or sector alerts so you know what changed.
- Delete rules tied to a position you no longer own or a thesis you have abandoned.
- Schedule a monthly or quarterly alert audit, depending on your plan, and confirm that contact details and device permissions remain current.
Troubleshoot a missing, repeated or confusing alert
No notification arrived
- Check that the price actually crossed the threshold, rather than merely touching it in a delayed quote.
- Verify whether the rule covered the session in which the move occurred.
- Review in-app alert history and the active-alert list.
- Confirm operating-system permissions, battery-saving restrictions, email filters and the phone number or email on the account.
- Remember that push delivery is not guaranteed and that device delivery can involve wireless-provider fees.
The same alert keeps arriving
- Inspect the recurrence setting and whether the rule is designed to fire on every qualifying move.
- Check whether several nearly identical rules exist.
- Pause or delete the rule after the intended review, then create a one-time rule if appropriate.
The alert disappeared
Some systems remove one-time price or percentage alerts after they trigger. Fidelity documents that behavior for its price-movement and percentage-change alerts, while its 52-week and moving-average alerts stay active until deleted. Recreate the rule only after deciding that another notification is useful.
The quoted price looks different from the trigger
Check the session, quote timing and data permissions. Volatile markets can produce rapidly changing prices, and real-time quotes may lag. A notification records that the platform’s condition was met; it does not guarantee that the displayed price is still available.
A simple operating routine
Use this compact routine for each security:
- Define the holding’s role, time horizon and planned allocation in your investment records.
- Create only the alert conditions that would cause a scheduled review.
- Select regular-hours or broader session coverage deliberately.
- Set recurrence and delivery so the rule is noticeable but not overwhelming.
- When it fires, verify the move and read reliable information before opening an order ticket.
- Compare the facts with your plan, diversification and allocation.
- Record the decision and clean up the alert list.
Vanguard summarizes the long-term discipline this routine is meant to support: “If your reasons for investing haven’t changed and you have a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, and cash investments, doing nothing is usually best.” The SEC similarly advises, “Do not let short-term emotions about investments disrupt your long-term financial objectives.” Those statements do not prescribe an outcome for any individual holding; they describe why a notification should lead to review rather than reflex.
Availability and scope
Brokerage features, labels, session coverage and delivery options can change with app versions, account types and local rules. SEC guidance cited here is U.S.-focused.
