Set Steam to Offline Mode while you still have internet access. Sign in with Remember me enabled, update and launch each game you want to play, make sure Steam is allowed to save your credentials, then select Steam > Go Offline… and close the client normally. If Steam later requires you to sign in, you cannot bypass that requirement without reconnecting.
Prepare Steam and your games while online
Steam’s Offline Mode is intended to let you play games through Steam without an active connection to the Steam Network. It does not make every game playable without internet, so prepare each title you expect to use before your connection disappears.
- Sign in with credentials saved. Open the Steam client while connected. At the login window, make sure Remember me is checked. In the client, open Steam > Settings > Security and confirm that Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected. If Steam asks you to log in after you have lost connectivity, its support guidance says there is no way to bypass the requirement offline.
- Update the games you plan to play. Let each game finish downloading and applying updates. Steam and games do not receive updates while Steam is offline, so a pending update can prevent you from starting a title or leave you without a needed fix.
- Launch each game once while connected. Open every intended game, allow any first-run installation or downloads to finish, and confirm it reaches a playable state. Then exit the game back to Steam. Steam says most games need this initial connected launch before they can be used offline.
- Switch Steam to Offline Mode. From the main Steam window, select Steam > Go Offline… and follow any confirmation the client displays.
- Close Steam normally. Exit the client through Steam rather than force-quitting it, then shut down or disconnect. Steam recommends manually closing the client because it needs stored information for Offline Mode.
Check whether each game is a good offline candidate
Steam’s setting controls the client’s connection state; it does not remove a game’s own network or launcher requirements. Use these checks to judge whether a title is prepared. They are decision points, not a guarantee that a particular game will work offline.

A Steam library status of “100% – Ready” is not proof that a game will launch offline. Steam’s FAQ notes that the client and/or game files may need updating if a game still fails in Offline Mode. If a title is essential, test it in Offline Mode while you still have a way to reconnect: after selecting Steam > Go Offline…, try opening the game, then return online if it fails and troubleshoot before relying on it.

What Offline Mode changes
Offline Mode disables Steam features that require a connection, and Steam and its games do not receive updates until you reconnect. It is a connection setting, not a way to download or install missing content after you are offline. Make sure any installation, update, or first-run setup is complete beforehand.
Steam describes Offline Mode as allowing play “without having an active connection to the Steam Network.” That promise applies only when both Steam and the individual game are ready for offline use. A title that needs an active connection or external launcher remains dependent on those services regardless of the Steam setting.

Protect saves when you return online
Steam Cloud does not synchronize a game while Steam is offline. Progress made locally during that time can differ from the cloud copy last synchronized while you were connected. Steam warns that playing offline is very likely to cause a conflict when you go online again.

- Reconnect to the internet and let Steam and the game finish synchronizing before continuing play on another device.
- If Steam presents a cloud-conflict prompt, read it carefully and compare the local and cloud copies before choosing which one to keep.
- Do not assume lost cloud data can be restored: Steam notes that cloud data can include saves and other game-specific data, and support may not be able to recover lost data.
If Offline Mode does not work
- Steam asks you to sign in: If credentials were not saved or Steam requires authentication, you will need to go online to complete sign-in. That is why the remembered-credential check must happen before disconnecting.
- The game will not start: Confirm it completed an online launch and has no pending installation or update. A requirement for a live connection or external launcher cannot be fixed by switching Steam to Offline Mode.
- The game appeared ready but still failed: Steam says the client and/or game files may need updating. Reconnect, update Steam and the title, launch it again online, then retry Offline Mode.
- Cloud saves conflict after reconnection: Pause before choosing a copy. Review the conflict information and select the version you intend to keep; an incorrect choice can overwrite progress.
When to reconnect
Reconnect periodically so Steam and your games can receive updates. Also reconnect before relying on a game whose offline behavior you have not confirmed, or when Steam requests sign-in. If an outage is expected to last, do the updates, first launches, and credential check before it begins rather than waiting until the connection has already dropped.
