“Release” is not one identical event everywhere. Steam explicitly documents notifications when a wishlisted game launches in Early Access or as a full release, and it can notify again when an Early Access title moves to full release. Steam also has rules for sale alerts and a one-time notification trigger for an associated demo. PlayStation documents a general wishlist-update control rather than a guaranteed, separate launch message for every unreleased title. Microsoft documents release and sale alerts for Xbox wishlists, with multiple simultaneous sale alerts sometimes consolidated.

Notifications are not a substitute for checking the store page. A developer can change a release date, alter packages or remove a title, and platform rules can delay, consolidate or suppress an alert.

Match the alert to the event you care about

Before changing settings, decide whether you are waiting for availability, a price reduction or a general store update. A release alert means the product has become available for purchase or access under that platform’s release state. It does not necessarily mean that a previously announced date has arrived, that a trailer was posted or that every regional storefront has opened the same product.

Early Access is especially important on Steam. Valve treats the first Early Access availability as a release event for wishlisters, then documents another possible notification when the same app moves to full release. Those are separate milestones, so keeping the game wishlisted through both stages gives Steam the opportunity to send both messages. PlayStation’s Wishlist Updates label is broader: it refers to updates to wishlist items, without a promise that each launch, date revision or Early Access-style event will produce an individual alert. Xbox’s documentation specifically describes release and sale notifications, but does not establish a separate Early Access-transition rule.

A demo can also have its own behavior on Steam. Steamworks documents a one-time notification trigger for an associated demo. The practical setup remains the same: add the main game to your wishlist and keep the relevant notification channels enabled. A demo alert should not be treated as proof that a full-game release alert is guaranteed.

1. Add the game to your Steam Wishlist

1. Open the game’s Steam store page in the desktop client, mobile app or a browser while signed in.
2. Select Add to your Wishlist.
3. Confirm that the button or page state now identifies the game as wishlisted. If it still offers the add option, the account did not save the change.

For an unreleased title, wishlisting is the tracking mechanism. You do not need to own the game or install a separate reminder tool. If you use more than one Steam account, check the account name before adding the item; a wishlist on a different account will not control alerts for the account whose email or phone you monitor.

2. Keep Steam email and mobile notifications enabled

1. Open your Steam account notification preferences.
2. Leave the relevant wishlist email options enabled if you want messages in your inbox.
3. In the Steam mobile app and your phone’s operating-system settings, allow Steam notifications if you want push alerts.

Steam allows wishlist sale alerts to be delivered by email or through the mobile app, and those categories can be opted out of. Account-level email choices can suppress some or all messages, so enabling a game’s wishlist status alone is not enough. Enabling email does not automatically grant mobile permission, and allowing mobile push does not repair an unverified or blocked email address; check each channel independently.

3. Know which Steam events can trigger an alert

Valve’s Steamworks wording is explicit about launch availability: a user who has the game on their wishlist when it releases in Early Access or as a full release can receive an email and/or mobile push notification about the game being available. “Can receive” matters: verified email, account preferences, app permissions and Steam’s delivery controls still apply.

• A discount of 20% or more.
• A discount duration of more than eight hours.
• The discount applies to the lowest-priced package.

A short promotion, a discount below 20% or a promotion that leaves a cheaper package undiscounted can therefore fail to produce a wishlist sale alert even though the store page shows a changed price. A bundle or deluxe edition changing price does not necessarily satisfy the lowest-priced-package condition if the base package is unaffected. When testing a missed sale message, compare the displayed discount and duration with all three documented requirements instead of looking only for a changed number on one edition.

5. Account and delivery conditions for Steam email

• Your Steam email address must be verified to receive Steam email messages.
• Your account email preferences must allow the relevant message category.
• Your phone or mobile app must permit Steam push notifications if you rely on mobile delivery.
• Steam applies a two-week notification cooldown per app ID for customers who were notified about that app.
• During high-volume periods, delivery can take longer than usual.

The cooldown is tied to the app ID, so repeated price or release-related changes for the same product do not necessarily produce another message within that two-week window. The rule also explains why a user can see a later store change without receiving another email: the account may already have been notified about that app recently. High-volume delays are a separate issue, so allow time for delivery before concluding that a wishlist setting failed.

PlayStation 5: turn on Wishlist Updates

1. Enable the documented PS5 control

1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
2. Select Notifications.
3. Enable Wishlist Updates.

PlayStation describes this control as allowing you to “See when there are updates to items on your wishlist.” Add the unreleased game to your PlayStation wishlist first; otherwise there is no item for the setting to monitor. If you use multiple PlayStation Network accounts on one console, add the game and enable notifications on the account you actually use for the wishlist.

2. Decide when pop-ups may appear

On the same Notifications area, use the pop-up controls to decide whether notifications are suppressed while you are:

• Playing games.
• Watching videos.
• Broadcasting.

These controls affect visibility on the console. If a pop-up is suppressed during one of those activities, check your notification history or the store later rather than assuming the wishlist was removed. A hidden pop-up is a presentation setting, not evidence that the item left your wishlist.

3. Set the right expectation for an unreleased PS5 title

The official PlayStation material establishes the Wishlist Updates setting and its general purpose. It does not promise that every unreleased title will generate a separate, guaranteed launch alert. When several wishlisted items are discounted together, Xbox may consolidate the notices into one system toast and one email. A single message can therefore represent multiple sale events rather than one alert per game. Open the wishlist or store afterward if you need to identify every discounted title represented by the combined notice.

How to prepare your Xbox account

1. Sign in to the Microsoft account used for Xbox purchases.
2. Open the Xbox or Microsoft Store wishlist and add the unreleased product.
3. Keep account communication and notification permissions enabled for the channels you use, such as email and console system notifications.
4. Check that your console can display system toasts and that your email service is not filtering Microsoft messages.

Microsoft’s published material is publisher-facing rather than a current, region-independent controller-menu guide. Menu names and locations can change with console software and account region, so avoid relying on an exact button sequence that is not shown in the current support page. Where Nintendo stands

A title can appear on one account’s wishlist while a different account is signed in on the console or phone.

Check the notification channel itself

Check whether the event qualifies

Steam release alerts concern availability in Early Access or full release, not every announcement, date change or trailer. For a sale, verify the 20% minimum, the more-than-eight-hour duration and the lowest-priced-package condition. On Xbox, look for a consolidated message when several wishlisted products entered a sale together. On PS5 and Nintendo, do not infer a guaranteed launch alert from the existence of a wishlist setting.

Allow for timing and cooldowns

Steam can delay delivery during high-volume periods and applies a two-week notification cooldown per app ID after notifying a customer about that app. A missing second message during that period is therefore not evidence that the first wishlist event was misconfigured. Look for a suppressed console pop-up

On PS5, notifications can be suppressed while playing, watching video or broadcasting. The alert may have been hidden at the moment it was generated. Recheck the console notification area and the game’s store page after ending the activity that suppresses pop-ups. If the item is still wishlisted and Wishlist Updates remains enabled, the missing banner alone does not establish a failed subscription.

Check regional and storefront differences

Release availability, package pricing and account settings can differ by country.
