To prevent surprise game charges, configure purchase controls on the account or store that actually processes each payment. Approval makes an adult authorize eligible purchases; a spending cap limits the money available to spend. They are different controls, and a child may use several billing routes across a phone, console, PC, and game publisher.
Start by identifying the child’s accounts and payment methods, then apply the relevant controls on each platform. The instructions and limits below reflect official platform guidance available on October 13, 2026; age, country or region, device, and software version can affect what settings are available.
First identify which account bills the purchase
A game purchase can be charged through a device’s app store, a console or PC store, or the game publisher’s own payment system. An in-game purchase may use yet another route, such as virtual currency bought separately. A setting on one account does not automatically control the others.

Before changing settings, list the devices and accounts the child can access. For each game, check the receipt, purchase history, or checkout screen to identify who processes the charge. The name on the payment statement or receipt is often a useful clue. If you cannot tell, inspect the account’s purchase history or ask the platform’s support service before relying on a control.

- Device app stores: Check the store used to download the game, such as Google Play or Apple’s App Store.
- Console stores: Check the child’s account on PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch.
- PC stores: Check the account used for PC game purchases, such as Steam.
- Publisher payments: Some games offer their own checkout, including through a website or a publisher account. Platform controls may not cover those charges.
Do not assume that a game’s parental-control screen governs every way to buy something in that game. The payment processor determines which account setting applies.
Approval and a spending cap solve different problems

Approval is the stronger choice when you want to decide transaction by transaction. A funded balance can establish a practical budget, but it is not necessarily an approval workflow, and restrictions on spending existing funds may not block ways to add more funds. If your goal is a hard ceiling, remove or restrict other available payment routes as well as setting a balance or limit.
Google Play: require approval for selected purchase types
A family manager can configure a child or family member’s Purchase & download approvals category in Google Play. The available choices include all content, purchases using the family payment method, in-app purchases, or no approval. Choose the narrowest option that matches what you want to control; for example, selecting in-app purchases does not mean every possible game payment is covered.

Google Play’s approval rules apply only to purchases billed through Google Play. They do not govern a publisher’s separate web checkout, a console purchase, or another store’s payment flow. Google also notes that some content and subscription categories are excluded from purchase requests, and that approval behavior can vary depending on whether a family payment method is configured.
- Sign in to the family manager’s Google account and open the family purchase-approval settings in Google Play.
- Select the child or family member whose purchases you want to control.
- Set the appropriate Purchase & download approvals category, such as in-app purchases or all content.
- Check how the family payment method is configured and review the exclusions for subscriptions or other content.
- Confirm that the game’s checkout is billed through Google Play before treating the setting as protection for that purchase.
Google Play is a poor fit as the only control when the child can pay a publisher directly or use a different store. Configure the account handling that separate charge too.
Apple devices: use Ask to Buy for eligible purchases
Apple’s family purchase-approval feature is called Ask to Buy. For eligible downloads and purchases, a child requests permission and the family organizer or parent can approve or decline. Availability and defaults can depend on the child’s age and country or region. Apple’s current guidance also describes newer iOS and iPadOS behavior for requests to make exceptions to certain limits, so do not assume every device presents the same prompts.

- On the parent or guardian’s device, open Settings.
- Tap Family, then the child’s name.
- Open Apps & Websites, then Restrictions.
- Tap Ask to Buy and enable Require Purchase Approval.
- Check the child’s age, country or region, and operating-system version against Apple’s current instructions to confirm eligibility and the behavior you expect.
Ask to Buy is an approval mechanism, not by itself a universal budget limit. It concerns eligible purchases within Apple’s purchase system; it does not make an unrelated publisher checkout or another platform’s store subject to Apple’s approval setting.

Microsoft Family Safety offers two distinct approaches for a child account. If the child account has a credit card, a parent can enable Require approval for every purchase under Manage spending. If you want to set a defined amount without adding a credit card, fund the child’s Microsoft account balance with that amount. Microsoft says the account cannot be overdrawn; it also describes approval when a purchase exceeds the child’s age limit or the available funds run out.
- Open Microsoft Family Safety and select the child’s account.
- Go to Manage spending.
- If a credit card is associated with the child account, enable Require approval for every purchase for an approval-first approach.
- For a balance-based budget instead, add only the intended amount to the child’s Microsoft account balance, without adding a credit card as another route.
- Use spending notifications and activity reporting if you want visibility into account activity.
These controls concern purchases handled by the Microsoft account and store. They do not automatically cover a charge billed directly by an unrelated publisher or through another platform. If a game is played on Xbox but its transaction uses a different billing account, configure that account separately.

Nintendo Switch: apply account restrictions and budget separately
A parent or guardian Nintendo Account in a family group can set restrictions for a child or supervised account. Nintendo’s guidance says purchase restrictions can cover eShop purchases and some in-game items. Age-based restrictions are separate: they control which eShop content is visible, rather than serving as a general spending budget.
Nintendo also describes using a fixed balance as a way to provide a defined budget. Do not treat purchase restrictions and a balance cap as interchangeable. Nintendo lists some balance top-ups and code redemptions among actions that purchase restrictions do not block, even though spending from an already-added balance can be controlled. A child who can add funds another way may therefore be able to exceed the budget you intended.
- Check that your parent or guardian Nintendo Account is part of the family group and that the child uses the intended child or supervised account.
- Use Nintendo’s family-account purchase restrictions for the eShop and eligible in-game purchases.
- Set age-based eShop restrictions separately if you also want to limit the content the child can view.
- If using a balance as a budget, review who can add funds and whether top-ups or redeemed codes remain possible.
- Confirm the relevant navigation and account options for your country and the child’s device: Switch 2, Switch, or Switch Lite.
Steam: let a child request payment for a shopping cart
Steam Families is the current family feature set; it replaces Steam Family Sharing and Family View. An adult can create a Steam family, assign an account a child role, and configure parental controls. For purchases, a child can ask an adult in the family to pay for the shopping cart. The adult can approve and pay from a mobile device or by email, and an approved game is added to the child’s account.

- Create or join a Steam family using the adult account.
- Assign the child account a child role and configure its parental controls.
- When the child wants a game, have them submit the shopping-cart purchase request.
- Review the request and, if you approve, pay using the mobile-device or email workflow.
The documented Steam workflow is request-based; it does not establish a monthly spending cap. If you want a fixed budget, decide how requests will be approved and paid rather than assuming Steam has a built-in monthly limit for this workflow.

Epic’s parental purchase controls apply to Epic payments, not every transaction associated with an Epic game. Epic explicitly excludes payments made on PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, as well as purchases made with in-game currencies such as V-Bucks. If the charge is processed by a console or PC store, set the control on that platform.
Epic describes a daily spending threshold for accounts where the user indicates an age under 13. That is a limited Epic-payment rule, not a general daily allowance for all accounts, platforms, or in-game purchases. Check the current Epic account and market details before relying on the threshold, and use the billing platform’s own settings for excluded charges.

The PlayStation Family App overview says parents can manage a child’s spending by adding funds, viewing balances, and setting a monthly spending limit for PlayStation Store purchases. This is a PlayStation Store control; it should not be treated as covering a separate publisher checkout or a different store. The precise setup screens may vary by region and account configuration, so use the current PlayStation support instructions for the child’s account before changing the limit.
A cross-platform setup sequence that catches gaps
Use this process whenever a child has more than one device or game account. Work through each account separately rather than assuming that one family setting follows the child across platforms.
- Inventory devices and accounts. Write down the phones, tablets, consoles, PCs, app-store accounts, console accounts, PC storefronts, and publisher accounts the child can use.
- Trace each payment route. For games with saved payment methods or in-game purchases, check receipts and purchase histories to establish whether the charge goes through an app store, console or PC store, or publisher.
- Pick the appropriate control. Use approval when you want to authorize eligible purchases individually. Use an account balance or platform spending limit when you want a defined budget and the platform supports it.
- Review other ways to spend. Check for saved cards, family payment methods, balance top-ups, redeemable codes, and separate virtual-currency purchases. Remove or restrict a route that would defeat the intended limit.
- Check coverage by transaction type. Verify whether the setting covers paid games, downloads, in-app items, subscriptions, or game currency. Do not infer coverage from the fact that a game appears in a particular store.
- Test the actual workflow. Use a harmless eligible request if appropriate, or inspect the parent’s notification and purchase history. Confirm that the request or alert reaches the adult and that the transaction appears on the account you expect.
- Recheck after changes. Revisit settings when the child changes devices, accounts, operating systems, country or region, or family-group status.
What to do when a control does not stop a purchase
- The charge still went through: Find the receipt or purchase-history entry and identify its billing account. Set controls with that store or publisher instead of assuming the first platform setting covers it.
- No approval request appeared: Check whether the purchase type is eligible, whether the child is using the correct family account, and whether the platform requires a family payment method or particular account role.
- A child can spend beyond the intended budget: Look for a second payment method, account-balance top-up, gift or code redemption, or a separate virtual-currency purchase. A balance can be replenished unless the ways to add funds are also controlled.
- The menu differs from these instructions: Confirm the platform, account role, operating-system version, and country or region. Follow the platform’s current support guidance for that configuration rather than selecting a similarly named setting on a different account.
- You want to block all game spending: Do not rely on a single toggle when the child can access multiple stores or publisher checkouts. Remove available payment methods where practical, restrict purchase routes on each family account, and check the transaction history for anything billed elsewhere.
Platform settings can change, and age rules or regional availability may affect eligibility. The most reliable setup is the one you verify against the specific account and payment route the child will use.
