PlayStation has two different purchase controls. Require Password at Checkout makes an adult account enter its sign-in password for Store purchases. A child account’s Monthly Spending Limit caps what that child can spend from the family manager’s wallet; it defaults to 0. Use the password control to stop someone using an adult account, and the monthly limit to control a child’s account. They do not replace each other.
The settings can be managed on the web, PS5, PS4 and, where Sony supports it, the PlayStation App or PlayStation Family app. Menu wording can vary by country and system software, so use the equivalent account, family and purchase settings if your screen differs.
Which PlayStation purchase control do you need?
Choose the setting based on the account making the purchase. Sony documents the two controls separately: its US checkout-password guide covers adult-account purchases, while its parental-control guide covers a child account’s monthly allowance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Control | Account covered | What it does | Where it is managed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Require Password at Checkout | Adult account | Displays a password prompt when that account buys Store content. The password is the one used to sign in. | Account Management on the web, PS5, PS4 or PlayStation App |
| Monthly Spending Limit | Each child account in the family | Caps the child’s Store purchases for the month. The default is 0. | Account Management, PS5, PS4 or PlayStation Family app |
Neither control is a substitute for the other. Password-at-checkout does not apply to child accounts, and the child limit does not add a password prompt to an adult account. Sony also treats adding money to a wallet separately from buying Store content.

Before changing a setting: identify the account and role
First check which PlayStation Network account is active when a purchase is made. A password setting belongs to that adult account, not to the console as a whole. Likewise, a spending limit belongs to one named child account. A child using an adult profile can therefore bypass the child-limit arrangement because the purchase is being made under the adult account’s rules.
Use the family manager account, or the parent or guardian role Sony permits, for family changes. The person managing a child’s limit must be able to open Family Management and select that child. If several children use the same console, configure each account separately and verify the profile selected before testing a purchase.
Require a password for an adult account’s purchases
Sony says the password screen appears when an adult account makes a purchase. The prompt asks for the password used to sign in to that PlayStation Network account. Once enabled, the setting applies across devices used to access the PlayStation Store, rather than only the device on which you turned it on. See Sony’s US instructions for Require Password at Checkout for the account-specific options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTurn it on in Account Management on the web
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Payment Method.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout.
Sign out after changing the option if other people use the browser or device. The control belongs to the account, so changing it in Account Management affects that account’s Store access on its other supported devices.
Turn it on from a PS5
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Account, then Payment and Subscriptions.
- Open Purchase Settings.
- Enable Require Password at Checkout.
If your PS5 uses slightly different labels after a system update, look under the signed-in account’s payment, subscription or purchase settings rather than under parental controls. This option is for the adult account that is currently being configured.
Turn it on from a PS4
- Go to Settings.
- Open Account Management, then Account Information.
- Select Wallet, followed by Purchase Settings.
- Choose Require Password for Purchases and select Yes.
Sony notes that the PS4 may ask you to reauthenticate when you open Wallet. That reauthentication is separate from the purchase-password switch; complete it to reach the setting.
Turn it on in the PlayStation App
- Open the PlayStation App and select the PlayStation Store icon.
- Open the menu.
- Select Payment Methods.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout.
App labels can change with an update or region. If you do not see the switch, use Account Management in a browser or the console route for the same adult account.

What this setting does not cover
- It does not apply to a child account. Child spending is governed by the family manager’s monthly limit.
- It does not require a password when money is added to a wallet. Wallet funding is a separate action.
- Sony’s US guidance says an account with a passkey set up cannot enable Require Password at Checkout. If the option is unavailable, check whether a passkey is configured before troubleshooting the console.
For the passkey exception and related account-security guidance, consult Sony’s security best-practices page. A passkey and a checkout-password prompt are different sign-in mechanisms; the documented limitation concerns enabling this particular checkout setting.

Set a child account’s monthly spending limit
Only the family manager, or the parent or guardian role Sony allows to manage family settings, should change a child’s allowance. The family manager selects an amount separately for each child. A child account does not have its own wallet: eligible purchases draw on the family manager’s wallet and are constrained by that child’s monthly limit. Sony’s support documentation describes the default as 0, which prevents Store purchases under this control.
Use the child’s own family account when applying the limit. Sony’s account-security guidance treats a child using an adult account as a separate problem; an adult account cannot be controlled by the child-account spending-limit setting.
Change the limit on the web
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management as the family manager.
- Open Family Management.
- Select the child’s account.
- Edit Monthly Spending Limit and save the amount.
Repeat the process for each child. The amount is per child, not one shared family balance. Sony’s parental-control instructions are published on its family-management support page.
Change the limit on a PS5
- Open Settings.
- Select Family and Parental Controls.
- Open Family Management and select the child.
- Choose Parental Controls.
- Open Monthly Spending Limit and set the amount.
The child must be selected inside Family Management; changing purchase settings on the adult profile does not set the child’s allowance.
Change the limit on a PS4
- Go to Settings.
- Open Parental Controls/Family Management, then Family Management.
- Select the child.
- Choose Applications/Devices/Network Features.
- Open Monthly Spending Limit and enter the amount.
The PS4 may ask you to re-enter the account password. That is the family manager confirming the change, not a new spending charge.
Manage it from a phone
Sony also says the PlayStation Family app can manage a child’s spending limit. Sign in as the family manager, select the relevant child in family controls and edit the monthly limit. If the app presents different wording, look for the child’s spending or purchase allowance rather than the adult account’s checkout-password option.
Understand the amount you enter
A limit of 0 blocks the child account from purchasing Store content through this control. Raising it above 0 permits purchases up to that monthly amount, provided the family manager’s wallet can pay. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US Terms of Service and User Agreement dated March 2026 state that increasing a child account’s limit represents approval to pay for purchases up to the approved monthly amount. Read the current March 2026 US terms for the contractual wording that applies to your account.

The setting is a ceiling, not a promise that a child will spend the full amount. It also is not a separate child wallet or prepaid balance. Purchases are charged through the family manager’s wallet according to Sony’s family-account rules.

How the two settings differ in practice
| Question | Require Password at Checkout | Monthly Spending Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Who is it for? | The adult account making the purchase | A specific child account in the family |
| What is the restriction? | A password prompt at checkout | A monthly currency limit |
| What happens at the default? | You choose whether to enable the prompt | The limit starts at 0 |
| Whose wallet is charged? | The purchasing adult account’s configured payment or wallet method | The family manager’s wallet |
| Does it protect wallet top-ups? | No | Child accounts cannot add funds to their own wallet |
| Supported management routes documented by Sony | Web, PS5, PS4 and PlayStation App | Web, PS5, PS4 and PlayStation Family app |
For example, if another person knows the adult account’s sign-in details, enable Require Password at Checkout on that adult account. If a child has a separate family account, leave its limit at 0 or set an amount appropriate for the month. Enabling the adult password prompt will not impose a cap on the child account, and setting the child’s cap will not protect purchases made while the adult account is selected.
Practical household scenarios
Shared console with adult and child profiles
Configure the adult account first: turn on its checkout-password requirement and sign out when finished. Then open Family Management as the family manager and set the child’s limit independently. Before handing over the controller, confirm that the child profile is selected. This prevents an accidental purchase from being attributed to an adult profile with different permissions.
Several children with different allowances
Because the limit is per child, one child can remain at 0 while another has an approved amount above 0. Do not assume changing one profile changes the others. Open each child’s profile, verify the amount, and save each change. All eligible purchases still draw from the family manager’s wallet.
A child needs a paid item once
Temporarily set that child’s limit to an amount that covers the approved purchase, then return it to 0 if the household policy is to block further purchases. The setting authorizes spending up to the monthly amount; it is not a one-item voucher, so review the limit after the purchase.
An adult wants a password but uses a passkey
Sony says the checkout-password switch cannot be enabled when a passkey is set up on the account. The documented remedy is to review the account’s sign-in and security configuration; do not assume a console reset will make the switch appear. If the account continues to use a passkey, use the account-security options Sony provides and monitor which account is signed in.
Wallet funding is a separate security issue
A checkout-password prompt occurs when buying Store content; it does not appear when adding funds to a wallet. Sony’s wallet top-up guidance says child accounts cannot add funds and instead use the family manager’s wallet within the configured limit. The accepted-payment-methods guidance also explains the relationship between a child account, the family manager and the wallet.
Do not treat a gift card or a wallet top-up as a spending-limit feature. Funding a wallet changes the money available; it does not enable Require Password at Checkout and does not set a child’s Monthly Spending Limit. Configure the relevant account control first, then review who can access the wallet and payment methods.
What to check when a setting is missing or ineffective
The password switch is unavailable
- Check whether the account has a passkey. Sony’s US support documentation says Require Password at Checkout cannot be enabled for an account with a passkey set up.
- Confirm that you are editing an adult account. The setting is not offered as the child-account spending control.
- Try Account Management in a browser if the console or app labels do not match the documented route.
A purchase does not ask for a password
- Verify that the setting was enabled on the same adult account that is making the purchase.
- Remember that wallet funding is excluded; the prompt is for Store purchases.
- Check whether another account is signed in or selected on the console. A control on one account does not configure another.
A child cannot buy an allowed item
- Check the child’s Monthly Spending Limit in Family Management and confirm it is above 0.
- Confirm that the family manager’s wallet has an available payment method or funds. The child account does not have an independent wallet.
- Make sure the child is using the family account created for them, not an adult account.
A child can buy when you intended to block purchases
- Set that child’s limit to 0 and save the change.
- Check every child separately; limits are configured per child account.
- Look for purchases made while an adult account was active. Those transactions are governed by the adult account’s purchase settings, not the child limit.
Regional and software-version differences
The password instructions cited here come from Sony’s US support page, while the detailed spending-limit route comes from Sony’s UK support page. Sony documents the same control names and concepts, but the material does not establish that every region uses identical menus, currencies or legal terms. Follow the equivalent Payment Method, Purchase Settings, Family Management and Monthly Spending Limit labels for your country and console software.

On PS4, Sony uses the label Require Password for Purchases; on the web, PS5 and PlayStation App it uses Require Password at Checkout. These labels refer to the adult checkout-password control in the documented routes. A system update may move a menu one level, but the account and family-management areas remain the appropriate places to look.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A reliable setup sequence for a household
- List the people who use the console and identify which PlayStation Network account each person uses.
- Ensure each child uses a child account in the family rather than an adult account.
- On every adult account that can buy Store content, enable Require Password at Checkout using the web, PS5, PS4 or PlayStation App route.
- As family manager, open each child’s profile and confirm the Monthly Spending Limit. Leave it at 0 to block purchases, or enter the amount you approve for that child.
- Review the family manager’s wallet and payment methods separately, because neither control protects wallet top-ups.
- Sign out of account-management pages and avoid leaving an adult account selected when a child is using the console.
- After a system or app update, revisit the relevant setting if the labels or account arrangement have changed.
This sequence separates identity, authorization and funding: the adult password prompt verifies the adult account at checkout, the child limit authorizes only a defined monthly amount, and the wallet remains the payment source governed by Sony’s family rules.
Frequently asked questions
Does Require Password at Checkout protect a child account?
No. Sony’s checkout-password control is for adult-account purchases. Set the child’s Monthly Spending Limit in Family Management instead; the default of 0 blocks purchases under that child account.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is the child’s limit shared with siblings?
No. The family manager sets an amount for each child account separately. Review every child profile rather than assuming one family-wide allowance.
Does setting a limit create a child wallet?
No. Child accounts do not have their own wallet. Eligible purchases use the family manager’s wallet and remain subject to the child’s configured limit.
Will a checkout password be requested when adding wallet funds?
No. Sony treats wallet funding separately from Store checkout. The password setting does not protect a wallet top-up.
Why can’t I turn on Require Password at Checkout?
Check whether the adult account has a passkey. Sony’s US security guidance says the checkout-password option cannot be enabled for an account with a passkey set up. Also confirm that you are editing an adult account and try Account Management on the web if a console menu is different.
What does raising a child’s limit legally mean?
Sony’s March 2026 US Terms of Service and User Agreement say that increasing a child account’s limit represents approval to pay for purchases up to the approved monthly amount. Set only the amount the family manager is prepared to authorize.

Can I use a gift card instead of a spending limit?
A gift card funds a wallet; it does not enable a checkout-password prompt or configure a child’s Monthly Spending Limit. Use the account controls for the restriction you need.
Why did the menu name change on PS4?
Sony documents Require Password for Purchases on PS4 and Require Password at Checkout on the web, PS5 and PlayStation App. They describe the same adult checkout-password control in those routes. Regional wording and system updates can also change the path slightly.
Bottom line: use both controls when both risks exist
Enable Require Password at Checkout on each adult account to stop purchases made under that account without its sign-in password. Set every child account’s Monthly Spending Limit independently—0 blocks purchases, while a higher amount authorizes spending up to that monthly ceiling from the family manager’s wallet. Keep wallet funding and account identity in view, because neither setting covers the other.

How do I require a password for PlayStation Store purchases?
For an adult account, open Account Management, choose Payment Method and enable Require Password at Checkout. On PS5 use Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Purchase Settings. On PS4 use Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Wallet > Purchase Settings > Require Password for Purchases. The PlayStation App also exposes the setting under PlayStation Store > menu > Payment Methods.
How do I stop a child from buying games on PlayStation?
Have the family manager open Family Management, select the child and set Monthly Spending Limit to 0. The same control is available through PS5 and PS4 family settings and the PlayStation Family app. Make sure the child uses a separate child account, not an adult profile.
Does the adult checkout password apply to child accounts?
No. Require Password at Checkout covers adult-account purchases only. Child purchases are controlled by the child’s monthly limit and use the family manager’s wallet.
Can a child add money to a PlayStation wallet?
Sony says child accounts cannot add funds to their own wallet. Purchases use the family manager’s wallet within the child’s configured monthly limit.

Why is Require Password at Checkout missing?
Sony’s US guidance says an account with a passkey set up cannot enable this option. Check the account’s passkey status, confirm you are editing an adult account and try the web Account Management route if console or app labels differ.
What happens when I set a child’s limit above zero?
The child may make eligible Store purchases up to that monthly amount, provided the family manager’s wallet can pay. Sony’s March 2026 US terms describe raising the limit as approval to pay up to the approved amount.
The Bottom Line
Use Require Password at Checkout for adult accounts and a separate Monthly Spending Limit for each child account. Keep child limits at 0 to block purchases, and remember that neither control protects wallet top-ups.
