Start by identifying what “gambling in games” means in your case. Buying a game’s loot boxes or other random rewards is different from placing real-money bets with an online gambling operator, so the right spending controls—and the applicable rules—are different too.
For game purchases, use purchase restrictions, approval or authentication settings, and a pre-agreed budget. For real-money gambling, look for deposit, loss, or spend limits in the operator’s account settings and check the rules where you live. In either case, review what the control covers before relying on it.

First, identify which kind of spending you want to control
A game account or store account may let you buy games, add-ons, virtual currency, or random rewards such as loot boxes. A real-money gambling account is operated by a gambling business and may offer betting or casino-style products. The two can look similar when both involve chance, but virtual currency and random game rewards are not automatically legally equivalent to real-money gambling. The UK government’s guidance on loot boxes describes their features and protections without concluding that every loot box is legally gambling.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Game purchases: Set controls on the console, device, app store, or game account used to pay. These may block purchases, require approval or a password, or impose a dollar limit. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission describes these options for caregivers.
- Real-money gambling: Set limits through the gambling operator’s account controls where available, and check local requirements. A limit may apply to only one product or account rather than all gambling activity.
Menus and rules vary by game, device, account type, and country. Confirm which account is being charged before changing a setting.

Set limits for purchases in games
Use the strongest available purchase control
Open the purchase or parental-control settings for the relevant game, device, console, or app store. Turn off purchases if they are not needed. Otherwise, require a password or parent/guardian approval for each purchase, or set a spending ceiling if the platform offers one. The FTC recommends caregivers use game and device controls to turn spending off, require a password, or set a dollar limit.
Check which payment methods are saved and available to the account. Removing an easy-to-use payment method can add friction, but it is not a substitute for a purchase lock or approval requirement if another payment method can be added.

Agree on a fixed allowance
Decide in advance which kinds of purchases are allowed, how much may be spent, and how often. Australian eSafety guidance recommends clear rules about purchase types, amounts, and frequency, along with parental controls or a pre-approved balance. For a child’s account, keep control of the password and use approval settings rather than relying on a verbal agreement alone.

A platform gift card can help restrict spending to a pre-approved balance. Apple, Google Play, Xbox, and PlayStation gift cards are examples of payment methods discussed by eSafety. Treat a gift card as a budget aid, not a platform spending lock: an added payment method or another top-up can defeat the cap. Keep approval or account controls in place as well.

Check the terms for paid random rewards
Before buying loot boxes or similar rewards, look for the game’s purchase disclosures and stated odds. UK government guidance says loot boxes may be earned through play or bought with money, including through virtual currency. Xbox Game Studios says covered games disclose purchases and probabilities, and that loot-box items can also be earned through gameplay. That is a policy for covered Xbox Game Studios titles, not a rule that applies to every publisher or game.
Odds tell you the chance of a stated outcome; they do not make a purchase predictable or guarantee a particular item. If odds are shown as percentages, read them as the game’s disclosed probabilities, not as evidence that a particular reward is worth its price. The example percentages on the Xbox Game Studios policy page are illustrative only, not a measured or typical loot-box distribution.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Set limits on a real-money gambling account
Find the limit that matches your goal
Look in the operator’s account or responsible-gambling settings for deposit, loss, or spend limits. These controls are not interchangeable: a deposit limit restricts money added to the account, while a loss or spend limit addresses a different measure. Check the operator’s explanation of how each is calculated and whether it applies to every product you use.
Compare the actual terms before relying on a setting:

Know the UK-specific rule
For gambling businesses licensed by the UK Gambling Commission, rules effective 31 October 2025 require the operator to prompt customers to set a financial limit before their first deposit, allow them to review and change it, and remind them every six months to review account and transaction information. These requirements are UK-specific; they should not be assumed to apply to operators or customers elsewhere. The Commission says the changes are intended to help consumers decide on deposit limits and keep track of spending.
Protect the account as well as the budget
Spending controls work best when the account cannot be used casually or by someone else. Use authentication or parent approval for game purchases where available, keep account credentials private, and review saved payment methods and purchase activity. For a child’s account, the adult responsible for approvals should retain control of the password.
Check purchase confirmations and transaction records periodically so you can spot charges you did not expect. If a control seems not to apply, verify that it is set on the account actually making the purchase and covers the specific product or payment type. Consult the platform’s current support information for its exact menu labels and rules.

Recognize when ordinary limits are not enough
Spending or gambling may need more than a budget setting if someone repeatedly exceeds intended limits, plays longer than planned, chases losses, borrows to keep playing, falls behind on bills, or experiences relationship distress. Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation lists these as warning signs and advises setting session time limits, avoiding borrowing, and not chasing losses. Its support and self-exclusion information is specific to the Philippines.
If gambling feels out of control, stop playing and contact a recognized gambling-support service or the relevant regulator in your country. Use local help options rather than assuming that a support or self-exclusion program in another country is available to you.
