To cap API spending for a particular team, open that workspace in the Anthropic Console, go to Limits, and select Change Limit. You can also add an email notification for a chosen spending threshold in the same area. To track activity, use Usage for token counts and Cost for monetary totals. Labels may vary with your Console language; Anthropic’s workspace instructions are published in Indonesian, so follow the labels displayed in your account.
Set a spending limit for a workspace
Anthropic supports spending limits at both organization and workspace scope. A workspace limit must be lower than the organization limit. If you leave the workspace limit unset, the organization limit still applies; an unset workspace limit is not an unlimited-spending setting. Anthropic documents the workspace steps in its workspace management instructions.
- In the Anthropic Console, open the workspace you want to control.
- Open its Limits tab.
- Select Change Limit and enter a workspace spending limit that is below the organization limit.
- Save the change, then check the displayed limit to confirm it was applied.
The organization limit is the broader ceiling; the workspace limit narrows the allowance for that workspace. Choose the boundary that matches what you need to control: the whole organization or a specific workspace.
Add an email notification before the limit
A limit is a hard boundary, while a notification can give you an opportunity to investigate spending before requests are affected. In the workspace’s Limits tab, select Add notification and choose the spending amount at which Anthropic should email you. The available thresholds depend on what the Console offers for your account.

Monitor token usage in the Usage report
Open Usage in the Console to investigate how many tokens were used, where, and when. Anthropic’s Cost and Usage Reporting documentation describes filters for workspace (or all workspaces), model, month or narrower date range, and API key.
- Use the workspace filter to isolate a team’s activity.
- Compare models, date ranges, and API keys to identify which usage is driving activity.
- Inspect the charts for input and output token counts and statistics. Chart interaction can reveal hour- or minute-level detail.
- Check the report’s rate-limited request information when investigating throttling.
- Export the report as a CSV for offline analysis or an internal recurring report.
For an API-key and model audit, Anthropic also points to Usage → Export; the downloaded CSV can help identify which integration or model generated usage. See Anthropic’s model deprecation audit instructions.

Use Cost to understand monetary spend
Usage is the token-focused view; Cost is the monetary view. The Cost report offers model-specific or combined costs, monthly breakdowns, a daily cost chart, total cost statistics, and CSV export. Its total cost statistics include tool-use costs such as web search and code execution, according to Anthropic’s reporting documentation.
Review the daily chart for changes during a billing period and the monthly breakdown for the broader total. Console usage tracking reflects actual usage; Anthropic describes its billing and usage tracking in the pricing documentation.

Check access if Usage or Cost is missing
Anthropic documents report access for Developer, Billing, and Admin Console roles. If a report is not visible, check the signed-in user’s role and workspace access. Billing users can view cost, usage, and limit values across workspaces; Admins can manage user roles. See API Console Roles and Permissions.
Diagnose requests blocked by a spending limit
A configured organization or workspace spend limit generally produces an HTTP 400 error. Anthropic documents an exception for a Claude Code workspace spending limit, which may produce HTTP 429. A 429 can also indicate rate limiting or a monthly usage-tier spending cap, so the status code alone may not identify the cause. Read the returned error description, then check the applicable organization and workspace limits and review Usage or Cost. Anthropic’s API error reference describes these cases.

Automate usage reporting with the API
For recurring or programmatic monitoring, Anthropic provides a Messages usage-report endpoint. It supports filters including workspace, API key, and model, and lets you choose minute, hourly, or daily buckets. The documented maximum query windows are 1,440 minutes for minute granularity, 168 hours for hourly granularity, and 31 days for daily granularity. These are API parameter limits, not recommendations for a reporting schedule. See the Retrieve Messages Usage Report reference for parameters and pagination details.

Choose the Console reports for interactive filtering, charts, and manual CSV export; use the API when a report needs to run on a schedule or feed another system. For an effective operational check, set the workspace cap and notification, compare the workspace’s Usage and Cost views, and use the request error details if traffic is blocked.
