The safest design is an isolated wallet or smart account funded with only the amount an agent needs. Put limits on each transaction and on a day or rolling period, restrict tokens and destinations, require approval for risky actions, set an expiry, and keep a human or separately controlled service in charge of adding funds. A recurring allowance can reset a budget such as 100 USDC each day, but that reset is not the same as automatically pulling new money from a bank, exchange, or treasury.
This guide explains the controls, implementation patterns, setup sequence, and recovery procedures you need to prevent an agent from draining a larger wallet.
What an AI-wallet spending policy must control
A single daily limit is not enough. An agent can spend the whole allowance in one transaction, send it to an untrusted address, or use an approved token in an unsafe contract unless the policy covers those paths separately.

Keep these controls independent. A low daily cap does not compensate for unrestricted recipients, and an allowlisted token does not protect you from an unlimited contract approval.

Use a wallet that is isolated from your main funds
Hosted agent wallet
A managed product can create a separate wallet and expose only policy-bound API operations. Binance describes its Agentic Wallet as a separate, keyless wallet with an isolated balance; its documentation says the agent is constrained at the API level and that operations are logged for auditing. Its FAQ says the wallet balance is separate from the main wallet and transfers are restricted to address-book destinations. The current documentation lists four supported networks: BNB Smart Chain (chain ID 56), Ethereum (1), Base (8453), and Solana (CT_501). Availability and supported features can change by region and product version, so verify the current account screen before funding it.
Smart account
A smart account can enforce the rules in contract code rather than relying only on an application server. ERC-8196 models an authenticated agent policy with an owner address, agent address, allowed actions, allowed and blocked contracts, a maximum value per transaction, and an optional maximum value per day. The owner remains able to change or revoke the policy.
Managed account, principal, and agent hierarchy
AgentWallet documents a three-level allocation model: funds move from an account to a principal and then to an agent, with per-transaction, daily, and monthly caps. Its FAQ answers the question “Can an agent top itself up?” with “No. Funds are allocated down from the account and principal. The agent can request approval for a spend but cannot move money into its own wallet.” This is a useful security boundary because the process that approves additional funds is outside the agent’s authority.

Estimate the amount the task needs for one short period, then transfer that amount to the isolated wallet. Do not make the agent’s wallet a hot copy of your treasury. Keep the treasury, exchange account, or bank connection under a separate human-controlled key or service.
- Use a dedicated address or smart account for each agent or risk domain.
- Fund it with the smallest practical amount for the first test period.
- Leave a small, separately planned amount for network fees where the chain requires it; do not confuse fee funding with the agent’s token budget.
- Record the wallet address, chain, token contract, owner, policy version, and expiry in an inventory.
- Use a second person or a separately secured service for treasury transfers.
Never give the agent credentials that can move money from the treasury into its own balance. An agent may submit a refill request, but authorization and execution should belong to a different trust domain.

Set limits in a deliberate order
- Create the isolated account. Generate the hosted wallet, smart account, or managed agent account. Confirm that its owner and recovery address are yours before depositing funds.
- Choose the network and assets. Select only the chains required by the task. Add the exact token contracts, not merely a ticker symbol. Start with one or two approved tokens.
- Define allowed actions. For example, allow a USDC transfer to approved recipients but block arbitrary contract calls and token approvals. Add swaps or DeFi actions only when the policy can identify the exact contracts and limits.
- Set the per-transaction cap. Make it the lowest value that completes a normal operation. A daily budget should not be used to justify a large one-shot transfer.
- Set the period cap. Select the semantics explicitly: calendar day, rolling 24 hours, weekly, or monthly. Check when the counter resets and which timezone the interface uses.
- Restrict destinations. Use an address book or contract allowlist. Require a second confirmation before adding or changing a destination.
- Add an approval threshold. Pause transactions above the threshold and all policy-changing operations. Treat contract approvals, new recipients, large swaps, and DeFi calls as high risk even when their token value is small.
- Set an expiry. Use a short initial lifetime. Renew it only after reviewing logs and confirming that the agent still needs access.
- Test the deny paths. Submit a transaction over the per-transaction cap, to an unapproved address, and after expiry. Each should be rejected or routed to the required approval step.
- Save the revocation procedure. Document who can disable the agent, where the kill switch is, and how remaining funds will be moved to a safe address.
Understand recurring allowances versus automatic refills
What a recurring allowance does
Safe’s official AI-agent treasury quickstart describes an allowance module that can be one-time or reset after a chosen interval, with the example “100 USDC every day.” At each reset, the policy makes a fresh allowance available to the agent. This is a programmable spending budget enforced by the account or module.
What it does not do
A resetting allowance does not prove that new funds will be pulled from an exchange, bank account, or treasury when the wallet balance is empty. The wallet must already hold enough tokens, or a separate funding process must deposit them. The reviewed agent-wallet documentation does not establish a universal native auto-refill switch.

- Pre-funded schedule: Deposit enough for several periods, while the policy limits what the agent can spend in each period. This is simple but leaves more capital exposed in the isolated wallet.
- Human approval: The agent requests a top-up when its balance is low; a person reviews the request, checks logs, and sends the approved amount from the treasury.
- Separately controlled allocator: A service monitors balance and policy state, then transfers a bounded amount only when independent rules are satisfied. Keep its credentials and code separate from the agent.
- Allowance reset with external funding: A smart-account allowance resets on schedule while an allocator replenishes the wallet under its own cap. These are two controls, not one automatic-refill feature.
Set a maximum refill amount, a minimum time between refills, and a total treasury limit. The allocator must not be able to edit the agent’s policy or increase its own authority.

Evaluate an implementation on more than its headline limit. Check isolation from the main wallet, whether enforcement is on-chain or at an API, destination controls, period semantics, approval workflow, audit logs, supported chains, recovery, and revocation speed.
Example policy for a small USDC agent budget
The following is an illustrative policy, not a universal configuration format. Translate each field into the controls exposed by your wallet or smart-account implementation.

}With this design, a transfer to an unlisted recipient is denied even if the amount is below 25 USDC. A 20 USDC transfer is held for approval, and the rolling-period counter prevents four 25 USDC transfers from being followed by another spend before the window permits it.

Configure a hosted wallet safely
In a hosted interface, look for the wallet’s agent or policy settings rather than a generic account spending limit. Binance’s documentation instructs users to set daily limits and tradable-token scope in its app; actions outside those rules are rejected or require a second confirmation. Use the narrowest token list and destination book first, then run the deny-path tests before connecting the agent.
Review the activity log after every test. Confirm that the log records the agent identity, requested action, destination, amount, decision, and approving person where applicable. An audit trail is useful only if it is retained long enough to investigate an incident and can be exported or reviewed independently.
Build a smart-account allowance
Choose allowance semantics
Decide whether the budget is one-time, calendar-based, or rolling. A “100 USDC every day” allowance may mean a reset at a fixed UTC boundary or 24 hours after the previous period, depending on the module. Verify the exact reset rule and whether unused allowance carries over; never assume either behavior.
Constrain the module
Pair the allowance with token, chain, recipient, contract, and action restrictions. A token allowance that permits arbitrary spender contracts can be dangerous even when the amount is modest. Keep policy administration with the owner and make policy changes subject to a separate approval process.

Test exhaustion and revocation
Spend part of the allowance, attempt to exceed it, and confirm the module’s response. Then revoke the agent and verify that a pending transaction cannot execute afterward. Keep the owner key or recovery mechanism offline or otherwise separate from the agent runtime.
Apply standards-based controls such as ERC-8196
ERC-8196’s policy model is useful when a team is implementing its own wallet or wants a common interface across products. Map the owner and agent addresses, allowed actions, allowed and blocked contracts, maxValuePerTx, and optional maxValuePerDay to enforceable contract checks. Document whether values are denominated in the chain’s native asset or a token, how decimals are handled, and which clock defines a day.
Do not treat a standard interface as a complete security review. The implementation still needs access-control tests, replay protection, nonce handling, chain-ID checks, emergency revocation, and monitoring for unusual destinations. Have an independent reviewer inspect the contract before placing meaningful funds behind it.

Binance supports automatic rejection or app confirmation for high-risk transactions. Use confirmation for new recipients, contract approvals, large swaps, DeFi interactions, and any request that changes a limit or adds an asset. The agent should never be able to approve its own policy update.

OpenPay’s setup guidance requires per-call, per-session, and daily limits plus allowed hosts, and warns that blockchain transfers are, in principle, irreversible. Its service is identified as being in beta, so treat that configuration as an example of layered controls rather than a guarantee that every provider offers the same safeguards.

- Require a human to verify the destination address on a trusted screen, not only in an agent-generated message.
- Reject requests that combine a policy change and a payment in one session.
- Use a separate approval identity for treasury refills.
- Set session timeouts and revoke sessions that are no longer needed.
Monitor the wallet and recover from a problem
What to monitor
- Spend by agent, token, chain, recipient, contract, and policy version.
- Rejected attempts, especially repeated attempts to bypass a cap.
- Allowance resets and refill requests.
- New recipients, new contracts, and policy edits.
- Balance, fee reserve, and time remaining before expiry.
Immediate response to suspicious activity
- Use the owner-controlled kill switch or revoke the agent policy.
- Disable API keys, sessions, webhooks, and allocator credentials associated with the agent.
- Move remaining assets to a clean, verified address if the policy still permits recovery.
- Preserve logs, transaction hashes, policy versions, and approval records.
- Rotate credentials and redeploy with lower limits only after identifying the failure path.
Because confirmed blockchain transfers generally cannot be reversed, speed matters more than attempting to negotiate with the agent after the fact.
Troubleshoot common failures
The agent reports that it has a budget but the transaction fails
Check that the wallet holds the token and the required network fee, that the allowance has reset under the expected time rule, and that the recipient and contract are allowlisted. A budget entry alone does not create a token balance.
The agent can spend more than expected
Inspect whether the period is rolling or calendar-based, whether multiple chains have separate counters, and whether a contract call can move more value than the visible transaction amount. Lower the per-transaction cap, remove broad contract permissions, and revoke any approval that is not required.
A refill loop keeps sending money
Disable the allocator first, then revoke the agent. Add a refill cooldown, a per-period treasury cap, and an independent approval threshold. The allocator should stop when the agent is expired, revoked, or repeatedly rejected.
A destination was changed without authorization
Revoke the agent and the session that changed the address book. Review owner-key access and approval logs. Recreate the destination list from a trusted record and require confirmation for every future change.
Choose a design by risk and operating model
- Small personal experiment: Use a separate hosted wallet, one token, one or two recipients, a low per-transaction cap, and a short expiry. Fund only one test period.
- Recurring organizational payments: Use a smart-account allowance with explicit reset semantics, on-chain recipient restrictions, human approval above a threshold, and an independently operated treasury allocator.
- Multiple agents: Use account-to-principal-to-agent allocation so each agent has its own caps and can be revoked without exposing the others.
- Custom wallet infrastructure: Implement explicit owner and agent identities, contract and action allowlists, per-transaction and period caps, expiry, event logging, and emergency revocation. Obtain an independent security review before production funding.
The governing rule is simple: an agent may spend only from a deliberately isolated balance under limits it cannot edit, while every path that adds money remains outside the agent’s control.
