Set slippage to the largest loss you are genuinely willing to accept, then judge the setting by the displayed minimum received amount—not by the percentage alone. On the Uniswap web app, open swap settings and choose Auto or Custom; in Uniswap Wallet, use Max slippage. Check the minimum output before signing. A setting that is too low can make a swap revert while still consuming gas, while a setting that is too high can accept a materially worse price and make sandwich attacks easier. There is no single safe percentage for every token pair, route, network condition, or wallet.
What slippage tolerance controls
A swap quote is calculated before your transaction is mined. Between the quote and execution, the pool price can move, another trade can change the reserves, or the route can become less favorable. Slippage tolerance is the maximum adverse movement the transaction will accept before it is rejected.
In practical terms, the setting creates a floor for the amount you receive. If the quote says you should receive 100 tokens and you set a 1% tolerance, the transaction should not accept less than roughly 99 tokens. That example is illustrative; the actual minimum depends on the quote, route, token decimals, and interface calculations. Always read the minimum amount shown by the app rather than trying to calculate it from a rounded headline quote.

A low tolerance does not guarantee a better execution. It simply refuses to execute once the price has moved beyond your limit. If that happens, the swap can revert, and gas may still be charged for the failed transaction. MetaMask explicitly warns that users can spend gas on failed swaps.

A high tolerance gives the transaction more room to execute after an adverse move. Uniswap uses a 25% example in its support material: a transaction with that tolerance could receive 25% fewer tokens than the preview. That is an illustration of the risk, not a recommendation.
Slippage is not price impact
These two figures describe different problems and require different responses.

Uniswap describes larger trades in low-liquidity pools as having greater price impact and a greater potential loss. If the quote already shows substantial price impact, raising slippage only permits a worse version of that quote; it does not make the pool deeper.

Check these items before changing the number
- Minimum received: Decide whether the displayed floor is acceptable in the asset you will receive. This is more meaningful than a rounded percentage.
- Price impact: Separate the cost caused by your order from the movement risk while the transaction waits.
- Route and liquidity: Aggregators and routers may choose different pools or multi-hop paths. A route with more liquidity can produce a better quote, but it may also have different gas use and execution timing.
- Token behavior: Transfer-tax, rebasing, or other token-specific behavior can make the received amount differ from a simple quote. A wider tolerance is not a cure for an incompatible or deceptive token.
- Network conditions: Congestion, gas settings, and confirmation delay affect how long the quote is exposed to movement.
- Transaction cost: Keep enough native network currency for the swap and remember that a reverted transaction can still consume gas.
How to set slippage on the Uniswap web app
- Open the swap interface and connect your wallet. Select the network, the token you are selling, the token you want to receive, and the amount.
- Open swap settings. The web app provides a slippage control with Auto and Custom choices.
- Choose Auto or enter a custom percentage. Auto lets the app calculate a value for the transaction. Uniswap documents an automatic range of 0.5% to 5%, depending on network cost and swap size. This is product behavior, not a universal recommendation for Ethereum swaps.
- Expand the swap details. Read the quoted rate, price impact, network fee estimate, current slippage setting, and minimum amount you will receive.
- Reject the quote if the floor is unacceptable. If the minimum received is lower than the result you need, changing the tolerance upward would only authorize that lower result. Reconsider the amount, route, or timing instead.
- Sign only after checking the wallet prompt. Confirm that the token, amount, network, and recipient-side minimum match what you intended.
Auto is convenient when you do not want to manage the percentage on every trade, but it can change with the app’s current logic. Custom is useful when you have a clearly defined maximum loss. In either case, the minimum received is the final decision point.
How to set slippage in Uniswap Wallet
- Prepare the swap and proceed to the review screen.
- Open Settings during swap review.
- Select Max slippage. Enter a custom value if you need a specific ceiling.
- Review the minimum output before approving. Do not rely on the label alone; the output floor shows what the selected setting permits for this transaction.
Uniswap’s help material says Uniswap Wallet custom slippage is capped at 20% and that its automatic range is 0.5% to 5.5%. These limits and labels are interface details that can change, so verify the values shown in the current wallet version before signing.

UniswapX is a separate case
Ordinary Uniswap slippage settings do not apply to UniswapX swaps. Instead, inspect the minimum amount the UniswapX interface guarantees you will receive. The route may be filled through a different execution mechanism, so do not assume that a percentage selected for a conventional pool swap controls a UniswapX order.
Uniswap says its default router considers simulated gas and slippage, pool liquidity, and route structure when selecting routes. Those factors can change the displayed result and the transaction cost. Treat the minimum guaranteed amount as the binding practical question: would you still want the swap if that amount were delivered?
Transaction protection and sandwich risk
A sandwich attack places transactions around yours to profit from the price movement your order creates. A generous tolerance gives an attacker more room to make your transaction execute at a worse price. 1inch warns that high tolerance can make front-running or sandwich attacks easier, while a very low tolerance can cause a revert and gas loss.
Uniswap describes a Wallet swap-protection feature for Ethereum Mainnet transactions that sends swaps through a private transaction pool to reduce exposure to sandwich attacks and front-running. Uniswap says the protection is enabled automatically for Ethereum transactions, while users can still adjust slippage manually. This is a feature of that wallet and transaction path, not a general guarantee for every Ethereum DEX or network.
How other Ethereum swap interfaces handle slippage
Controls, defaults, and limits differ by provider. Never copy a percentage from one interface to another without checking the new app’s minimum-output display.

The percentages in this table are provider-documented interface behavior, not market statistics and not rankings of safety. A higher maximum does not mean a trade should use it.

How to choose a tolerance without relying on a magic percentage
Choose the percentage by working backward from the worst output you can accept. Then compare that floor with the trade’s liquidity, volatility, urgency, and protection options.
For a deep-liquidity, stable pair
A tight custom tolerance may be practical when the pair is liquid, the order is small relative to the pool, and the network is moving normally. If the swap repeatedly fails, first check whether the quote is stale, the route is poor, or the gas setting is delaying inclusion. Do not assume the answer is to keep increasing the percentage.
For a volatile pair
Prices can move materially while a transaction waits for confirmation. You may need more execution room than for a stable pair, but set the ceiling from the amount you are willing to lose. If the resulting minimum is unacceptable, the correct decision is to wait, reduce the order, or use a different route—not to authorize an unlimited deterioration.
For a thin-liquidity or large order
Inspect price impact first. A large order can produce an expensive quote even before market movement is considered. Reducing the amount or finding deeper liquidity addresses the underlying problem. Slippage tolerance only determines whether the transaction accepts movement away from that already-costly quote.

When confirmation is slow or gas is constrained
A transaction that sits pending has more time to encounter price movement. Review the gas estimate and network congestion, and avoid submitting duplicate swaps. If the minimum output has become unacceptable while the transaction is still pending, follow the wallet’s replacement or cancellation procedure rather than signing another trade blindly.
When the token has unusual transfer behavior
Fee-on-transfer, rebasing, and other token-specific mechanics can affect what arrives. Research the token’s behavior and route compatibility before changing tolerance. A very wide setting can hide a token or contract problem and expose you to a result you never intended to accept.

The tolerance is too low
If the market moved beyond the permitted bound before mining, the transaction can revert. Refresh the quote, check the minimum received, and decide whether the new floor is acceptable. If it is not, reduce the order, choose another route, or wait for calmer conditions. Remember that the failed attempt may still have consumed gas.
The quote became stale
Quotes are snapshots. A busy market, a pending block, or a long confirmation delay can invalidate one. Reopen the swap, obtain a fresh route, and compare the new minimum output with the amount you need.

Low liquidity can create high price impact and greater movement during execution. Try a smaller trade or a route with deeper liquidity if the interface offers one. A higher tolerance does not create liquidity.

The token or contract behaves differently from the quote
Transfer fees, rebases, nonstandard approvals, pausability, and other token-specific behavior can cause simulation or execution failures. Verify the token contract and route before attempting again. Avoid repeatedly submitting transactions with increasingly broad limits.
The network or wallet cannot complete the transaction
Confirm that the wallet is on the intended network, that the token approval is sufficient, and that enough native currency is available for gas. A swap can fail even when the slippage setting is reasonable if an allowance, balance, or gas condition is wrong.
Why you received fewer tokens than the preview
First compare the final amount with the minimum shown before signing.

The difference can reflect ordinary market movement, route changes, and any price impact already shown in the quote.
- Final amount appears below the minimum: Check token transfer mechanics, decimals, and whether the interface showed a net amount after fees. If the protocol’s stated minimum was not respected, save the transaction hash and review the route and token contract before trying again.
- The quote itself showed high price impact: The pool was expensive for that order size. Tightening or widening slippage does not remove that cost; change the order size or liquidity path.
Do not judge execution solely by comparing the wallet balance with a rounded preview. Use the transaction details, the route, the quoted minimum, and the actual token movements.
A repeatable process for every Ethereum DEX swap
- Select the correct network and token contracts.
- Enter the amount and wait for the route and quote to load.
- Read price impact, network fee, route details, and minimum received.
- Open the interface’s slippage control and identify whether it is Auto, a preset, or a custom value.
- Set the maximum loss you can accept, not the maximum needed to force execution.
- Check whether the route is a special system such as UniswapX and whether ordinary slippage controls apply.
- Look for available transaction-protection features, understanding that protection is provider- and network-specific.
- Sign only if the minimum output, token, amount, and network are correct.
- If the swap fails, diagnose the quote, liquidity, token behavior, gas, and approval before changing the tolerance.
The practical rule
Use the lowest tolerance that still gives a realistic chance of execution under the current market and route, and validate that choice by inspecting minimum received. If that minimum is unacceptable, improve the trade conditions—smaller size, better liquidity, fresher quote, faster inclusion, or a protected route—rather than repeatedly raising the limit. Interface defaults and caps can change, so rely on the controls and minimum-output figure shown by the active app at the moment you sign.
